Choose the feature by the clue you have: use Transcript Search when you remember spoken words, Visual Search when you remember an object or action, Beat Detection when the cut needs to follow music, and Montage Maker on iPad when you want a generated first assembly. Then use Generate Captions for subtitles, Edit Detection to break a rendered movie back into clips, and the Mac-only finishing tools for masks, color and frame-level trimming.
The tools accelerate locating and assembling material; they do not make the editorial decisions for you. Apple’s announcements describe the capabilities, while exact button names can change. For current controls, open the Final Cut Pro Support hub and select the current Mac or iPad User Guide.

Which new Final Cut Pro feature should you use?
The fastest way to choose is to classify what you remember about the footage. A remembered sentence points to Transcript Search; a remembered visual points to Visual Search. If the problem is musical timing, Beat Detection exposes the song structure. If you are starting a short social edit on an iPad, Montage Maker can produce a changeable first pass.

Search results and generated assemblies are starting points. Watch the surrounding material, check timing and context, and make the final cut yourself.

How do I search for a quote in Final Cut Pro?
Use Transcript Search for remembered dialogue
Transcript Search searches spoken content by a phrase you type. It is designed for interviews, video podcasts and other projects where you remember what someone said but not which clip contains it. Apple says the search can return exact and related results across footage. The feature is described for both Mac and iPad in Apple’s January 2026 announcement.
- Open the project containing the interview, podcast or other spoken footage.
- Enter the remembered word or phrase in Transcript Search. Start with a distinctive phrase; a topic word can produce a broader set of related results.
- Review each returned moment in context, including the words immediately before and after the match.
- Add the useful moment to the edit, then trim it for meaning, continuity and pace.
The last two steps are editorial practice based on what the search returns, not a promise that a result is ready to publish. A transcript can locate a sentence quickly, but you still need to verify the speaker, the complete thought and any reaction shot or cutaway required by the sequence.
Can Final Cut Pro find a clip by what is in the video?
Use Visual Search for objects and actions
Visual Search is the counterpart to Transcript Search. Use it when your clue is something seen or done: an object, a person or an activity category, or an action in the frame. Apple says Visual Search can pinpoint moments across footage and let you add a result to the timeline.
- Open Visual Search and describe the visual clue rather than a line of dialogue.
- Inspect the returned moments and scrub through the surrounding footage.
- Add the moment that actually serves the sequence to the timeline.
- Check continuity, framing and the complete action before you remove or shorten neighboring shots.
Visual Search locates candidate material; it is not a quality or continuity guarantee. A result may show the requested object only briefly, or the action may occur in a context that changes its meaning. Keep the original clip available until the edit is approved.
How do I line up cuts with music?
Use Beat Detection and its Beat Grid
Beat Detection analyzes a music track and displays beats, bars and song parts in a Beat Grid in the project timeline. The grid gives you visible timing references when you are building a rhythm-led edit or shortening a song to fit a different duration. Apple identifies Beat Detection for Mac and iPad in its feature announcement.

- Place the music track in the project timeline and run Beat Detection.
- Read the Beat Grid to identify individual beats, larger bars and song-part changes.
- Try candidate cut points against the grid, using stronger beats or section transitions for emphasis when they suit the story.
- Listen and watch the whole sequence. Move cuts away from a beat when a performance, line of dialogue or visual action needs more time.
The grid is a timing aid, not an automatic pacing decision. A cut on every beat can become mechanical; use the song structure to support the story rather than forcing every shot to match a marker.
Can Final Cut Pro automatically make a montage for social media?
Start on iPad with Montage Maker

- Watch the complete draft before changing individual shots. Note missing context, repeated angles, weak openings and abrupt endings.
- Adjust pacing and replace or remove shots so the sequence has a deliberate beginning, middle and end.
- Choose or change the music, then check that cuts and dialogue remain intelligible.
- Use Auto Crop for a vertical version of horizontal material, and inspect every important face, product or graphic after reframing.
- Review the final duration, crop and text on the device or platform where the video will be viewed.
Montage Maker is best treated as an assembly assistant. Apple describes it as adjustable, not as a publication-ready edit that can be posted without review.
How do I make captions in Final Cut Pro?
Generate Captions transcribes audio into subtitles
Generate Captions automatically transcribes audio and places subtitles in the timeline. Apple lists controls for animating the style and customizing font, color and position. That makes it useful for accessibility, dialogue-led social clips and versions that need readable speech without sound.
Check the language and hardware limits
In the June 30, 2026 announcement, Apple said Generate Captions required an Apple-silicon Mac with macOS 15.6 or later. On iPad, it required an M1-or-later iPad Pro or iPad Air, an iPad (A16), or an iPad mini (A17 Pro) running iPadOS 26 or later. Apple also stated that the feature was available only in U.S. English at that time. These are dated requirements, not a permanent promise; check the live support page before updating a production machine.

- Open the project and select the command for generating captions.
- Choose the audio or range to transcribe and let Final Cut Pro place the subtitle clips in the timeline.
- Read the captions against the audio. Correct names, technical terms, punctuation, timing and words spoken over music or noise.
- Set the font, color, position and any animation so captions remain legible against the shot.
- Watch the export with sound off and on. Captions should be readable without hiding faces, lower thirds or essential action.
Automatic transcription is a draft. Accuracy depends on the recording, speakers and language support, so a human pass is required for publishable subtitles.
How can I recover cuts from a rendered video?
Edit Detection splits an export back into clips
Edit Detection analyzes a rendered video and automatically splits it into clips on the timeline. It is useful when you have only an exported movie and need to make a shorter highlight, revise a delivered cut or continue work after losing access to the original sequence.
- Import the rendered movie into a project.
- Run Edit Detection on that rendered file.
- Inspect every detected edit point and adjust any split that falls inside a dissolve, effect or fast movement.
- Trim and rearrange the recovered clips to create the new version.
Edit Detection does not recreate the original project’s bins, effects, transcripts, roles or other metadata. Apple’s announcement describes splitting the rendered video into clips, so preserve the original library whenever it is available.
What new finishing tools are Mac-only?
The June 2026 update adds several finishing tools to the Mac version. They complement, rather than replace, conventional keyframing, grading and trimming.
Auto Mask for targeted corrections
Auto Mask detects subjects or regions such as skin, hair, sky, foliage and clothing. Hovering over a clip previews detections, or you can choose from a list in the inspector. Apply the resulting mask to a color correction or an effect, then refine the edge and strength where the shot requires it. Apple positions Auto Mask as a complement to Magnetic Mask, so choose the tool that gives you the cleaner selection for the specific motion and background.

Match Color for a consistent sequence
Match Color uses a selected reference frame and analyzes other shots so they move toward a more harmonious appearance. Apple describes the June update as more accurate and natural across a wider range of footage and lighting conditions. That is Apple’s product characterization, not an independent test result.
- Choose a reference frame that represents the look you want.
- Apply Match Color to the target shot or shots.
- Compare skin tones, neutral objects and exposure across the cut.
- Refine the result manually for mixed lighting, unusual color or intentional stylistic differences.
Advanced Trimming for frame-level edges
Advanced Trimming lets you refine incoming and outgoing frames one at a time. Use it when a cut is nearly right but a single frame changes a glance, gesture, impact or the exact start of a sound. Check the trim at normal playback speed as well as frame by frame; the most precise edge is not always the best rhythmic edge.
Send a key frame to Pixelmator Pro when graphics need a separate pass
Apple says a key frame can be sent from Final Cut Pro to Pixelmator Pro. Include this handoff in an image-graphics workflow when you need to retouch or design a still, then bring the finished image back into the edit. It is separate from the masking, color and trimming tools above.

Do not merge Apple’s June announcement with its later support documentation. They are different dated snapshots, and the requirements changed.

Read the current Apple Creator Studio support page for the version and operating-system requirements that apply to your region and release. A machine that met the June minimum may not meet the October minimum. Also check the feature’s own hardware and language limits, especially for Generate Captions.

Should you subscribe to Creator Studio or buy Final Cut Pro for Mac?
There are two access routes: a Creator Studio subscription that includes a wider collection of creative apps, and a one-time purchase of Final Cut Pro for Mac. Your decision depends on where you edit, whether you need the other apps and whether your hardware can run the current release.

Trials, family sharing and Apple Accounts
Apple’s June announcement said a new Creator Studio subscriber receives a one-month trial. Eligible buyers of a new Mac or qualifying iPad bought from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller could receive three months; the offer included iPad memory and chip conditions. Up to six family members can share the included apps and content. Confirm current eligibility and terms before relying on an offer.

If you cancel, Apple’s support documentation says the included apps and features remain available through the paid period. After it ends, productivity apps remain available without subscription intelligence features, and projects and files remain accessible.
Using both versions on one Mac
Apple’s October 6, 2026 support page says someone who owns the one-time-purchase Mac app and also subscribes may use either version, and both versions may be installed on the Mac. Keep track of which app opened a library and which feature set it provides when moving between installations.
How should you organize storage for these edits?
Final Cut Pro libraries can be moved to an external drive to save space or to edit on another Mac, according to Apple’s Final Cut Pro Support guidance. An external SSD is an optional workflow choice, not a stated requirement. Select storage based on your library size, available ports, project-transfer needs and backup plan; Apple’s cited guidance does not specify a required speed, capacity or interface.
- Back up the library before moving it.
- Use Final Cut Pro’s library management controls to move or copy the library to the external drive.
- Open the copied library and verify that media, optimized files, titles and captions relink correctly.
- Keep a second backup before deleting the original from the Mac.
For a project shared between Macs, eject the drive properly and avoid opening the same library from two computers at once. A portable library is useful only when its media and backups travel with it.

- Build a rough sequence. On iPad, let Montage Maker assemble a first pass, or assemble the selected moments manually on Mac or iPad.
- Set musical structure. Run Beat Detection on the music and use the Beat Grid as a timing reference while preserving natural dialogue and action.
- Recover or adapt an existing cut. If all you have is a rendered movie, run Edit Detection and inspect the resulting splits.
- Add captions. Generate Captions, then correct the transcript and style every subtitle for legibility.
- Finish on Mac when needed. Use Auto Mask for selective corrections, Match Color for shot consistency and Advanced Trimming for exact incoming and outgoing frames.
- Review platform versions. Confirm the current app version, operating system, supported iPad model and language availability before exporting.
- Watch the export. Check the full movie for context, continuity, captions, crops, color and audio before delivery.
