How to Use the New Features in the Latest Kindle Update (2026)

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

The latest Kindle firmware is model-specific, so there is no single feature list for every Kindle. Amazon lists version 5.20.1 for several recent models. On Kindle Scribe, the September 2026 release adds handwritten sticky notes for fixed-layout ebooks and personal documents. The checked 2024 Kindle notes describe performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements, not the Scribe writing feature.

Start by identifying your exact Kindle, match it with Amazon’s model-specific software listing, and then install the update over Wi-Fi or manually. The steps below show how to check your model and firmware, update safely, and use the Scribe feature when your device supports it.

What is new in the latest Kindle update?

“Latest Kindle update” refers to different firmware builds depending on the Kindle generation. A version number by itself does not prove that two models have identical capabilities. Amazon’s e-reader update page lists a separate entry for each model, and older Kindles can remain on different version numbers.

Kindle model or group Firmware identified in the current listings Documented changes What you should expect
Kindle Scribe 5.20.1, dated September 2026 Handwritten sticky notes in fixed-layout ebooks and personal documents, plus performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements Use the writing toolbar’s sticky-note tool, or select text and choose the sticky-note action
2024 Kindle 5.20.1 in the checked release notes Performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements Do not assume that the Scribe handwriting feature is available
Older Kindle generations Model-specific versions; some are different from 5.20.1 Varies by the entry for that model Follow only the release notes and update file for your exact device

The clearest named feature in version 5.20.1 is therefore a Scribe feature, not a universal Kindle feature. If you own a basic Kindle, Paperwhite or another non-Scribe model, an update may improve reliability without adding a visible new tool.

Identify your Kindle before checking for an update

Amazon’s device-identification path is available on the Kindle itself. Do this before downloading anything or looking for a new feature:

Amazon Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) - Light and compact, with fast page turns, and high contrast ratio - Matcha
  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
  • Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
  1. From the Home screen or while reading, swipe down from the top of the display.
  2. Open All Settings.
  3. Choose Device Options.
  4. Tap Device Info.
  5. Record the model name and the software version shown on that screen.

Use the model name, not just the screen size or purchase year, when consulting Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page. Two Kindles released in nearby years can have separate downloads and separate release notes. Keep the model and version together in your notes; this prevents a 5.20.1 feature documented for Scribe from being attributed to a different Kindle.

How to read the version information

A firmware number is an identifier for a software build, not a performance score. Version 5.20.1 on a Scribe and version 5.20.1 on another recent Kindle do not necessarily contain the same user-facing features. The release notes for each model determine what changed.

If your Kindle shows an older number than the one listed for your model, it may simply not have downloaded the update yet. If your model’s Amazon entry lists a different current version, do not force a 5.20.1 file onto it.

A model-first decision check

Before troubleshooting, write down three items: the exact model name, the software number displayed in Device Info, and the version Amazon lists beside that model. This quick record prevents the most common mistake—using instructions for a similarly named Kindle. Model names, generation labels and release years are not interchangeable identifiers.

Next, compare the documented change with the hardware you own. The Scribe release notes explicitly describe handwritten sticky notes; the checked 2024 Kindle notes do not. If your model’s notes mention only maintenance work, you should expect improvements that may be subtle rather than a new button or toolbar.

Install the update automatically over Wi-Fi

Kindle updates normally download and install automatically when the device is connected wirelessly. Automatic installation is the safest method because the Kindle selects the update associated with its own model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the Kindle to a working Wi-Fi network.
  2. Leave the device connected and sufficiently charged while it checks for new software.
  3. Allow the download and installation to finish. Avoid turning the Kindle off during the process.
  4. After the Kindle restarts, return to All Settings > Device Options > Device Info and check the software version again.

The update can take time to appear after Amazon publishes it. Availability is tied to the model-specific rollout and the device’s wireless connection, so seeing no prompt immediately does not establish that your Kindle is unsupported.

What happens after an automatic update

A Kindle restarts when the firmware installation completes. Amazon recommends charging the device and leaving it overnight afterward so it can index books. Indexing can make recently added titles appear slower in search for a while; that activity is separate from the firmware feature itself.

Before and after the Wi-Fi installation

Keep the Kindle on a stable wireless connection and avoid interrupting a restart. You do not need to search for a Scribe tool while the installation is still running; verify the version first. Once the device has restarted, check Device Info again, then open a book or document that matches the feature’s requirements. This separates an incomplete update from a command that is simply unavailable in an unsupported format.

If the version has changed but the library looks temporarily incomplete, leave the Kindle charging overnight as Amazon suggests. Indexing can continue after the firmware has installed, so a short delay in search results or library processing is not by itself a failed update.

Install a Kindle update manually

Use manual installation only with the update file listed for your exact model. A file for another Kindle generation can fail to install and can leave you troubleshooting a problem that began with the wrong download.

What you need

  • The model name from Device Info.
  • A computer with the model-specific update file downloaded from Amazon’s Kindle software update page.
  • The included Kindle charging and data cable.
  • Enough battery charge for the transfer and restart.

Manual installation procedure

  1. On the computer, open Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page.
  2. Find the entry that exactly matches your Kindle model and download the update file shown there.
  3. Connect the Kindle to the computer with its included cable.
  4. Wait for the Kindle to appear as a removable drive.
  5. Copy the downloaded update file onto the Kindle drive. Keep the file at the location specified by Amazon’s instructions rather than placing it inside an unrelated folder.
  6. Safely eject the Kindle from the computer.
  7. Disconnect the cable.
  8. On the Kindle, open Settings, tap Menu, choose Update Your Kindle, and confirm.
  9. Let the Kindle restart and complete the installation before using it.

If Update Your Kindle is unavailable, the device usually has not detected a usable update file. Check the model match, confirm that the copy finished, and reconnect only after safely ejecting the device.

Manual-update pitfalls to avoid

Do not select a file because its number looks newer, and do not substitute a download for a nearby model. The model-specific page is the authority for which file belongs on the device. Keep the downloaded file in the form Amazon provides, copy it to the Kindle drive as instructed, and use safe ejection before disconnecting. An interrupted transfer or an incorrectly placed file can leave the update command unavailable even when the Kindle is otherwise working normally.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Black
  • Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

After confirming the update, check Device Info rather than relying on the computer’s file list. The Kindle’s displayed software version is the useful confirmation that installation completed.

Mac transfer note for Kindle Scribe

Amazon notes that some Mac computers require additional software to transfer content to a Kindle Scribe. If the Scribe does not appear correctly as a drive, use Amazon’s linked transfer instructions for the applicable Mac setup rather than repeatedly copying the file or changing its name.

Use handwritten sticky notes on Kindle Scribe

On Kindle Scribe running the September 2026 5.20.1 release, Amazon documents this feature as: “Handwritten Sticky Notes (Fixed Layout): You can now add handwritten sticky notes in fixed layout eBooks or personal documents. Use the sticky note tool in the writing toolbar or select text and use the action menu.”

The feature is limited by both device and document type. You need a Kindle Scribe with the relevant firmware, and the document must be a fixed-layout ebook or a personal document. A standard reflowable Kindle book is not covered by this release-note description.

Method 1: Add a note from the writing toolbar

  1. Open a supported fixed-layout ebook or personal document on your Kindle Scribe.
  2. Bring up the writing toolbar.
  3. Choose the sticky-note tool.
  4. Write the note in the sticky-note area using the Scribe writing interface.
  5. Return to the document when finished, allowing the note to save before navigating away.

This method is useful when you want to place a note at a particular location while reading, without first selecting text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 2: Select text and use the action menu

  1. Open a supported fixed-layout ebook or personal document.
  2. Select the text associated with the note.
  3. Open the action menu for that selection.
  4. Choose the sticky-note option.
  5. Write the handwritten note and return to the document.

Text selection ties the note to the passage you were working with. The release notes specifically document adding the note through this action menu; they do not promise that every Kindle annotation control behaves identically across document formats.

What “fixed layout” means here

A fixed-layout ebook preserves the page’s designed positions for text, illustrations, panels or other elements. It behaves more like a page image or a print-style layout than a conventional Kindle book whose text reflows when you change the font size. Personal documents can also use a fixed page layout. If the sticky-note command does not appear, first confirm the document type before assuming that the firmware failed.

Choosing the right Scribe test document

For a clean test, open a fixed-layout ebook or personal document that you know is supported, then try both entry points. A reflowable title can hide the command even when the Scribe is correctly updated. Conversely, seeing the toolbar on a Scribe does not make the feature available on every book; the release note ties it specifically to fixed-layout ebooks and personal documents.

Rank #4
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 32GB (2024 model) – Auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and weeks of battery life – Metallic Black
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.

Keep the model, firmware and document type together when reporting a problem. “The sticky note is missing” is incomplete without those details, because a non-Scribe device, an older Scribe build and an unsupported document can produce the same visible result.

What the update means for other recent Kindles

The checked release notes for the 2024 Kindle list version 5.20.1 but name performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements rather than handwritten sticky notes. Those broad terms can cover responsiveness, stability or defect corrections, but they do not establish a new annotation workflow.

Do not look for a Scribe-style writing toolbar on the 2024 Kindle based solely on the shared version number. Feature availability follows the model’s release notes and hardware capabilities.

For older Kindles, Amazon’s update page lists separate versions. An older device may receive a maintenance release with a number other than 5.20.1, or it may have reached the latest firmware listed for that generation. Read the entry attached to your model before drawing conclusions about what changed.

Check whether your Kindle supports the new feature

Use this short verification sequence before troubleshooting:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Model: Confirm that Device Info identifies a Kindle Scribe.
  • Version: Confirm that the Scribe is running 5.20.1 or the later Scribe version listed by Amazon for your device.
  • Document: Open a fixed-layout ebook or personal document, not an ordinary reflowable title.
  • Tool: Look in the writing toolbar for the sticky-note tool, or select text and inspect the action menu.
  • Input: Use the Scribe writing interface to enter the handwritten note.

If any item fails, stop at that item. A missing command on a non-Scribe Kindle is an expected limitation, while a missing command on a correctly updated Scribe may indicate an unsupported document format or an incomplete update.

Troubleshoot an update that does not appear

The Kindle remains on the old version

  • Recheck the model in Device Info and compare it with Amazon’s model-specific listing.
  • Reconnect to Wi-Fi and leave the Kindle connected long enough to receive the automatic download.
  • Charge the device and restart it only after confirming that no installation is in progress.
  • If the update still does not arrive, use the manual procedure with the file for that exact model.

The manual update option is unavailable

  • Confirm that the file belongs to the Kindle model shown in Device Info.
  • Make sure the file was copied completely to the Kindle drive.
  • Safely eject the Kindle before disconnecting it.
  • Reconnect and repeat the transfer if the computer reported an interrupted copy.
  • For a Scribe connected to a Mac, follow Amazon’s additional transfer-software instructions when required.

The sticky-note tool is missing on a Scribe

  • Verify that the firmware is the Scribe release that includes the feature.
  • Open a fixed-layout ebook or personal document.
  • Try both documented entry points: the writing toolbar and the text-selection action menu.
  • Test another supported document if the first file is a reflowable ebook or an unusual imported format.

The Kindle restarts but books seem unavailable

After an update, Amazon suggests charging the Kindle and leaving it overnight to index books. Search and library processing can therefore take time after the restart. Do not interpret temporary indexing activity as evidence that the firmware installation failed.

Should you update immediately?

For most Kindle owners, accepting the model-specific update over Wi-Fi is the sensible choice because Amazon describes the releases as including maintenance improvements and bug fixes. Owners of a Scribe who read fixed-layout books or annotate personal documents have a specific reason to update: version 5.20.1 adds handwritten sticky notes in those supported documents.

If handwritten annotation is the deciding feature, verify the exact Scribe model and pen-compatible writing setup before making a purchase or assuming that another Kindle can provide the same workflow. This update does not turn every Kindle into a writing device.
