Check the name printed on your camera before following model-specific instructions.
If your camera is an SQ1, use FUJIFILM instax SQUARE instant film, match the cartridge’s yellow stripe to the yellow mark in the film chamber, keep the back closed until the pack is empty, and wait for the flash-charging lamp before pressing the shutter. Prints eject automatically and develop in about 90 seconds.

Identify the camera before loading anything
The name matters because the available controls are not the same across Square cameras. The instructions below are documented for the instax SQUARE SQ1 unless a section explicitly identifies another model.

| Camera name | What is established | Filter behavior | How to use this guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| instax SQUARE SQ1 | Fujifilm’s documented SQUARE camera with lens-ring controls, a flash-charging lamp, a film counter that runs from 10 to 0, and a documented SELFIE position | Built-in color filters are not documented in the SQ1 manual or support material | Use the loading, shooting, selfie, and handling steps marked for SQ1 |
| Instax Square 2 | An October 14, 2026 report describes a separate Square model | Reportedly has a switch for warm and cool analog filters | Do not assume its controls or battery design match the SQ1 |
| “Instax Square 3” | No official Fujifilm support product matching this exact name was verified | Not established | Read the label on the camera body and confirm the manual before loading film |
Look at the front, bottom, or rear label rather than relying on a retailer listing or a memory card of the product name. A model-number mismatch can lead you to search for a filter switch or shooting mode that your camera does not have. If the label says SQ1, the procedures in the next sections apply.

Use the correct film and prepare it properly
The SQ1 takes FUJIFILM instax SQUARE instant film. The word “SQUARE” refers to the cartridge and print format; do not substitute mini or WIDE film. Each SQUARE print has the following physical dimensions:
| Measurement | Instax SQUARE print |
|---|---|
| Overall print size | 86 × 72 mm |
| Image area | 62 × 62 mm |
Keep an unopened cartridge in its foil until you are ready to put it into the camera. Fujifilm recommends cool, dry storage. The foil protects the light-sensitive sheets; opening it early or leaving a cartridge loose in a warm, damp place removes that protection before you need it.
When travelling, Fujifilm recommends carrying both loaded and unused film in carry-on baggage instead of checked luggage. That reduces the risk of X-ray fogging. This is a handling precaution, not a guarantee that every security scanner will affect film in the same way.
How to load Instax SQUARE film in an SQ1
Load the cartridge in ordinary indoor light, and have the camera and foil-wrapped pack ready before opening the rear door. The yellow alignment marks are the important guide; the cartridge should slide into place without force.

- Open the film only when ready. Remove the SQUARE cartridge from its foil immediately before loading. Do not leave the cartridge exposed while you look for the camera or adjust other controls.
- Open the rear film door. Use the camera’s back-cover latch and expose the film chamber only for the time needed to insert the pack.
- Match the marks. Find the yellow stripe on the cartridge and align it with the matching yellow mark inside the film compartment. This is the orientation cue; do not rotate the pack to make it fit another way.
- Insert without force. Lower the cartridge into the chamber so it seats flat. If it does not drop into position, remove it and check the yellow alignment rather than pressing down on the pack.
- Close the door completely. The camera can now advance the protective dark slide when you operate it. Keep the door shut for the remainder of the pack.
- Verify the counter. After the camera has advanced the pack’s dark slide, the counter should indicate that ten exposures are available. The counter is designed to count down from “10” toward “0” as photographs are taken.
Why the back must stay closed
Do not reopen the loaded film door to check whether the cartridge is seated, inspect the remaining sheets, or correct a suspected count. Fujifilm’s manual warns: “Do not open the back cover until you have used up the film. Otherwise, the rest of the film will become exposed and turn white, and can no longer be used.” Opening the door lets light reach the unexposed sheets. Those sheets may then produce blank or white pictures, and the exposure counter can reset.
If you have already opened the door after loading, close it immediately. The sheets that were exposed to light may be unusable; do not keep opening the door to test them one by one.
Take a standard photo
On the SQ1, the lens ring controls the camera’s operating position. The camera will not fire while its flash is charging, so the lamp sequence is part of the normal shooting process.
- Turn the lens ring to ON. The lens barrel extends as the camera starts.
- Wait for the flash indicator. The flash-charging lamp blinks while the flash charges and then lights steadily when the camera is ready. The shutter cannot be pressed during charging.
- Hold the camera securely. Keep fingers, the camera strap, the flash, the exposure sensors, and the lens clear. Also keep the ejection slot unobstructed so the print can leave the camera.
- Compose through the viewfinder. Position the subject inside the frame. Remember that the viewfinder and lens are separate openings, so looking through the viewfinder does not itself show the exact edge of the print.
- Press the shutter once the lamp is ready. Keep the camera steady through the exposure. The flash fires according to the camera’s automatic operation.
- Wait for ejection. The camera makes an ejection sound and pushes the print out. Do not pull while the mechanism is still moving.
- Remove the print by its edge when the sound stops. Avoid touching the image area. The counter advances toward zero after the exposure.
- Turn the lens ring to OFF when finished. This retracts the lens barrel and prevents the camera from remaining active in a bag or on a table.
What the counter means
The SQ1’s counter begins at 10 and reaches 0 after the last exposure. “0” means the loaded pack has been used; it is not a signal to open the door before the final print has fully ejected. After the last sheet is out, you can open the rear door and replace the empty cartridge with a new one.

Use the SQ1 selfie position
The SQ1 has a documented SELFIE position on its lens ring. This is a close-distance setup, not a general portrait setting for subjects several metres away.
- Rotate the lens ring to SELFIE.
- Pull out the lens as directed for the selfie position.
- Use the small selfie mirror beside the lens to check your framing. The mirror helps you estimate where your face will appear; it is not a display or electronic preview.
- Keep the subject approximately 30–50 cm from the lens. A face closer than that may not be framed or focused as intended.
- Wait for the flash-charging lamp to become steady, then press the shutter while keeping the camera and your arm still.
Do not cover the flash, sensors, lens, or ejection slot with your fingers or the strap. A strap crossing the lens area can block the exposure, while a hand over the ejection slot can interfere with the print as it leaves the camera.
Filters: built-in controls versus cartridge accessories
Do not assume that every Instax Square camera has a filter switch. The SQ1 documentation does not describe built-in color filters. A report dated October 14, 2026 describes a different Square 2 model with a switch that places analog filters in front of the lens: the warm setting is described as a subtle golden tone, while the cool setting is described as crisp and blue-toned. Those controls should not be assigned to an SQ1 unless the labeling and manual for your particular camera confirm them.
Optional effects filters for an SQ1 setup
For an SQ1 or another camera that accepts SQUARE cartridges, B&H lists the KONO No.1 Effects Filters for FUJIFILM INSTAX SQUARE (3-Pack). This is a third-party accessory, not film. The pack contains three named effects: Austin, Raindrops, and Northern Lights. It is designed to attach to SQUARE film cartridges, so compatibility depends on the cartridge format rather than on a built-in filter menu.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Keep the accessory separate from the film pack when planning a shoot. The cartridge still has to be loaded with its yellow stripe aligned to the yellow mark, and the camera’s normal flash-ready and ejection sequence does not change. If an accessory blocks the lens, flash, sensors, or ejection path, remove it before taking the picture.
Choosing between the two approaches
| Approach | Where the effect is created | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Reported Square 2 warm/cool control | A switch places an analog filter in front of the lens | Confirm that the camera is actually the reported Square 2 and that the switch is present |
| SQ1 with a cartridge-mounted effects pack | A third-party filter attaches to a SQUARE film cartridge | Confirm the accessory is intended for Instax SQUARE cartridges and does not block camera openings |
| SQ1 with no filter | No added optical effect | Use the standard SQ1 procedure; built-in color-filter controls are not documented |
How Instax SQUARE prints develop
The image develops automatically in approximately 90 seconds. Set the print down or hold it by its border while the chemistry works. Do not bend, crease, or shake it. Mechanical handling cannot safely speed the process and can damage the developing image.
Temperature matters at the cold end of the range. Below 5°C (41°F), Fujifilm recommends keeping the ejected photo warm to help it develop properly. In cold weather, place the print in a warm inside pocket while leaving it flat and protected from pressure. Do not put it against a direct heat source.

The print is still light-sensitive while it is developing, so avoid experimenting with the surface or trying to peel it apart. The camera has already completed the exposure when the sheet ejects; the remaining time is chemical development, not another camera operation.

Troubleshoot white prints and other expected behavior
The picture came out white or blank
The most important question is whether the rear film door was opened after the cartridge was loaded. Fujifilm states that opening the door exposes the remaining light-sensitive sheets, can make them turn white, and can reset the counter. Close the door and do not open it again until the pack is finished. Sheets already exposed to light may no longer be usable.
If the door stayed closed, check the cartridge orientation and whether the camera completed its normal ejection cycle. Do not open the rear door merely to inspect the pack, because doing so can create the same light-exposure problem you are trying to diagnose.
The shutter button will not press
On the SQ1, the shutter cannot be pressed while the flash is charging. Wait for the flash-charging lamp to stop blinking and become steady. If the lens ring is not at ON or SELFIE, rotate it to the required operating position before composing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The print has not appeared yet
Wait for the ejection sound to stop before taking hold of the sheet. Keep fingers and the strap away from the ejection slot. Pulling early or obstructing the slot can interfere with the camera’s ejection movement.
The counter does not show the expected number
The counter is intended to start at 10 and count down to 0. Reopening the film door can reset it, which is one reason not to use the counter as a reason to inspect the cartridge. If the pack is new and the counter never reaches its normal starting indication after the initial advance, stop and verify the camera model and the cartridge alignment rather than forcing the door or film.
A reliable shooting routine
For an SQ1, the safest sequence is simple: identify the model, keep the SQUARE cartridge sealed until loading, align yellow to yellow, close the door, turn the lens ring to ON or SELFIE, wait for the steady flash lamp, frame through the viewfinder or selfie mirror, and press the shutter. Let the camera finish ejecting the print, remove it by the edge, and leave it undisturbed for about 90 seconds.
That routine also explains the two most common preventable failures: white pictures caused by opening the loaded film door and incomplete exposures attempted while the flash is still charging. When temperatures fall below 5°C/41°F, keep the ejected print warm while it develops. Use only filters confirmed for your exact camera or for SQUARE cartridges, because the unverified “Square 3” name does not establish which controls or accessories the camera supports.
