Use the Grappling Hook as a rope and pivot, not as a guaranteed teleport. Fire it into a higher surface to climb, anchor it across a gap to swing, or use a lower attachment to descend. When a fight turns bad, a downward or sideways grapple can move you out of the enemy’s current angle, but your landing, cover and next move determine whether the disengagement works.
Hands-on reporting found that the hook can reach most buildings and can be redeployed in midair to chain swings, while also showing failed ledge grabs and ropes snagging on balconies. Treat every grapple as a movement attempt with imperfect geometry, and choose the destination before you fire.

How the Grappling Hook works
The Grappling Hook attaches a rope to a surface. Once the anchor holds, you can move along that rope, use the anchor as a swing point, or travel downward. That makes it fundamentally different from a simple forward dash: your destination and the shape of the building determine the route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePC Gamer reporter Morgan Park described the hook as sticking to “just about anything,” but the same hands-on report documented exceptions and awkward catches. A large ARC may not hold the hook, a balcony can snag or redirect the rope, and reaching the top of a rope does not always result in a successful ledge grab. The useful rule is to expect broad attachment freedom without assuming universal attachment or a clean landing.

Before firing, identify three things: the surface you want to anchor to, the place where you expect to land, and what you will do immediately afterward. That third point matters because height alone is not safety. A roof with no cover, a second anchor, or a descent route can leave you exposed after the animation ends.
The movement behavior and midair redeployment described here come from PC Gamer’s October 7, 2026 hands-on report: PC Gamer’s Grappling Hook report. They are practical observations, not a complete developer specification.
Reach a rooftop with a direct climb
A direct climb is the simplest rooftop route when the roof edge is above you and the hook has a clear line to a higher surface.
- Pick the landing edge. Aim for a roof section where you can move behind cover or immediately place a second anchor. Avoid choosing the tallest visible point if a lower parapet gives you a safer landing.
- Fire at the upper surface. Use a roof face, ledge or other elevated structure that appears to provide a solid attachment. Keep balconies, railings and decorative projections in mind because they can interfere with the rope.
- Climb toward the anchor. The hook’s rope behavior lets you gain height rather than merely pulling you in a straight burst. Keep your intended ledge in view as you approach it.
- Prepare for the ledge transition. Reaching the rope’s top does not guarantee that your character will catch the roof edge. Be ready to correct your movement or accept a lower landing if the grab fails.
- Move as soon as you land. Get behind the cover you identified, check for enemies on adjoining roofs and decide whether another grapple or a conventional route is safer.
This route is strongest when the building face is open and the roof edge is easy to read. It is less reliable around stacked balconies, overhangs and cluttered facades, where the rope can catch on an intermediate projection instead of giving you the climb you intended.
When a direct climb is the wrong choice
- The edge is exposed: reaching the roof may put you in the same sightline as the squad you are trying to avoid.
- The face is cluttered: an intermediate balcony can snag the rope and leave you short of the roof.
- The landing is ambiguous: if you cannot see where your character will stand, use a lower anchor or a swing to approach from the side.
- An ARC occupies the route: the hands-on report says the hook may not hold on a large Emperor ARC, so do not build your route around that attachment.
Cross a rooftop gap with a swing
For two roofs separated by open space, use the hook as a pivot rather than trying to pull yourself directly to the far ledge. The goal is to build lateral momentum and arrive at a reachable edge or intermediate surface.

- Choose the far-side landing. Identify the exact roof edge, balcony or platform you want. A broad platform is preferable to a narrow lip because a missed grab can leave you below the target.
- Anchor to a surface that gives you clearance. The anchor should let the rope hang away from the building face. If the line runs through a balcony or sign, the rope may snag before you gain useful swing room.
- Build the swing. Move around the anchor so your path carries you toward the opposite roof. Think of the rope as a pendulum: your angle to the anchor determines whether you travel across the gap or simply rise and fall beside the original building.
- Release or redirect toward the edge. Aim to reach the far side with enough room to correct. Do not wait until the last instant if the target edge is narrow.
- Confirm the landing before committing further. If the ledge catch is uncertain, prioritize a lower platform or wall rather than forcing a perfect rooftop grab.
A swing is useful when a direct climb would expose you to windows or when the roof edge is offset from the strongest anchor point. It also gives you a way to approach a roof from an unexpected side, which can matter when an enemy is watching the obvious stairwell.
Chaining swings in midair
PC Gamer reported that the Grappling Hook can be redeployed while airborne, allowing one swing to lead into another. In practice, this means you can use a first anchor to leave one roof and a second anchor to redirect toward another structure instead of dropping all the way to street level. The report also says the sequence did not have a cooldown or use limit during the hands-on session; no official item specification in the cited material confirms the exact conditions for every match or patch.
- Start with a recoverable first swing. Keep a lower roof, balcony or wall within reach in case the second attachment fails.
- Scan while moving. Look for the next anchor before you reach the end of the first swing. Waiting until you are already falling narrows your options.
- Redeploy toward the next structure. Aim at a surface that changes your direction or preserves height. A second anchor directly behind you may not improve your route.
- Stop chaining when the geometry worsens. A safe lower landing is better than another ambitious attachment through cluttered balconies or narrow ledges.
Use the Grappling Hook to disengage from a fight
The hook can create an escape route, but it does not automatically break pursuit. A downward or lateral route may remove you from an enemy’s current angle, interrupt line of sight, or move the fight to a different building. Whether that becomes a real escape depends on where you land and how quickly you reach cover.
Plan the escape before firing
- Choose the next protected position. Mark a roof corner, interior room, balcony behind a wall or lower platform where you can heal, reload or listen for pursuit.
- Check the route beyond the first landing. If the enemy can simply follow your rope to the same roof, the grapple has only changed your elevation. A second anchor, doorway or descent route makes the move more useful.
- Prefer broken sightlines. A wall, parapet or offset building can hide your movement better than an open rooftop.
- Keep a fallback. Know where you will go if the rope catches a balcony or the ledge grab fails. Falling to a lower platform may be preferable to remaining suspended in the original firing lane.
Descend to leave the current position
Descending is often the most direct disengagement option when enemies are holding the roof or upper windows. Attach to a lower surface or a side of the building and travel down rather than assuming a free fall will be safe. The objective is to arrive at a controllable landing with cover, not merely to lose altitude.
- Identify a lower destination. Look for a balcony, ledge, awning or ground-level cover that gives you a next move.
- Fire away from the enemy’s angle. A side-facing or rear-facing anchor can move you out of the current line of fire while you descend.
- Watch for obstructions. Protruding balconies can catch the rope and change your path.
- Move immediately after landing. Break the predictable route by entering cover, changing buildings or setting up another anchor.
Descending can be especially valuable when an enemy expects you to remain on the roof. It is not proof that pursuit has ended; opponents may still have a visual, hear the movement or use their own route to intercept you.

Swing sideways to break the firing angle
A lateral swing can move you off the line connecting you to the attacking team. Use it when dropping straight down would put you in an open street or when another roof offers better cover.
- Anchor beyond the enemy’s current view. A side wall or offset structure can let the rope carry you around a corner.
- Use the building as cover. Keep the structure between you and the shooters for as much of the swing as possible.
- Land behind a solid obstacle. A roof edge alone may not stop fire; a wall or enclosed space gives you time to make the next decision.
- Do not overextend. If the far roof requires a perfect ledge catch, choose a nearer platform and continue from there.
What an escape grapple cannot guarantee
The available sources do not establish a success rate, an escape rate, a guaranteed line-of-sight break or a measured rooftop-access rate for the Grappling Hook. One Reddit player described grappling down from a building after teammates were killed, but that is an individual anecdote rather than evidence that the tactic reliably defeats a pursuing team: the player discussion. Treat the hook as an option to try when the geometry favors you, not as an emergency button that makes you safe.
Recover when the grapple goes wrong
Failure is usually a geometry problem rather than a reason to repeat the same shot. The reported failure cases suggest several practical responses.
| What you see | Likely problem | Response |
|---|---|---|
| You reach the rope’s top but do not climb onto the roof | The ledge catch did not register cleanly | Move toward a wider section of edge if possible; if the catch remains uncertain, redirect to a lower platform instead of forcing the same grab. |
| The rope wraps or stops around a balcony | An intermediate projection intercepted the line | Cancel the route mentally and choose an anchor with a clearer face. A lower landing may be safer than fighting the obstruction. |
| The hook does not hold on a large Emperor ARC | The target is not a dependable attachment surface | Use a building, roof edge or other visible structure rather than relying on the ARC as an anchor. |
| You arrive on an exposed roof | The destination provided height but no protection | Use the next available cover, place a second anchor or descend again; do not pause in the open to admire the height gained. |
These are responses to observations in the hands-on report, not a guarantee that every identical situation will behave the same way after a patch.
Grappling Hook versus Snap Hook
Do not transfer Snap Hook statistics to the Grappling Hook. Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 notes explain that introducing the Grappling Hook led the studio to give the two gadgets separate identities rather than treating one as a linear upgrade. The notes describe Snap Hook as burst mobility for quickly closing distance or traversing a location, with more commitment.

Practice the three routes before relying on them in a fight
The safest way to learn the gadget is to rehearse each movement type while the cost of a mistake is low. Practice should focus on recognizing geometry, not on memorizing a single “best” anchor.
Best Value
- Climb test: choose a building with a broad roof edge, fire at the upper face and observe where the rope brings you relative to the ledge. Repeat from a balcony-heavy side to see how projections alter the route.
- Swing test: connect to a side surface and aim for a nearby roof. Notice which anchor positions produce lateral travel and which leave you hanging beside the original wall.
- Descent test: start from a roof and identify two lower landing options. Use the safer one first, then test whether the second gives better cover or a faster route into a building.
- Redeployment test: during a swing, look for a second anchor and try to redirect toward a lower, forgiving platform. This teaches you when to stop chaining instead of waiting for an ideal rooftop catch.
- Failure test: deliberately approach a narrow edge and a balcony obstruction so you recognize the visual cues of a bad grapple before an enemy is shooting.
After each attempt, ask whether the landing created a useful next action. If the answer is only “I gained height,” the route may be impressive but tactically weak.
Choose the right grapple route by situation
| Situation | Preferred option | Decision check |
|---|---|---|
| You are below a roof with a clear face | Direct climb | Can you see a protected landing edge, and is the face free of balcony clutter? |
| Two roofs are separated by a manageable gap | Swing | Does the anchor give you room to pass the gap without a narrow ledge catch? |
| The enemy controls your current roof | Descend or swing laterally | Where will you break the firing angle, and what cover follows the first landing? |
| The first swing leaves you airborne with another structure nearby | Midair redeployment | Is the second anchor safer than a lower fallback, and can you see it before the first route ends? |
| The route crosses balconies or large ARC geometry | Reposition and fire again from a clearer angle | Are you accepting a known snag or attachment risk merely because it looks shorter? |
Numbers and limits you should not assume
No cited source supplies a measured Grappling Hook range, durability drain, power cost, cooldown, success percentage or escape percentage. The only published figures in the material are the Snap Hook’s 18 m range, 4% durability consumption per use and 60 power cost in Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 notes. Applying those values to the Grappling Hook would create a false comparison.
Likewise, the reported ability to redeploy in midair, and the report’s observation that the sequence had no cooldown or use limit during that session, should be treated as hands-on behavior rather than a promise that every patch, mode or situation will behave identically. Use the live item description and your current client as the final authority when they differ from older coverage.

- Pick the anchor and the landing before firing.
- For height, attach higher and climb; for a gap, use the anchor as a swing; for a lower route, descend deliberately.
- Keep a fallback platform in mind in case the ledge catch fails.
- Scan for a second anchor while airborne if you intend to chain swings.
- Assume balconies and protruding geometry can tangle the rope.
- Do not count on a large Emperor ARC as a reliable anchor.
- For an escape, plan cover and the next move rather than treating the first landing as safety.
- Keep Grappling Hook behavior separate from Snap Hook statistics.
Bottom line
The Grappling Hook is most effective when you use it to create a route: climb to a roof with cover, swing across a gap, or descend around a corner and continue moving. It can open escape angles that ordinary movement cannot, but imperfect catches and uncertain pursuit make it a tool for tactical repositioning, not an escape guarantee.
