The gadget anchors a rope rather than pulling you in a straight line. Move toward the anchor to climb, let the rope carry your momentum to swing, or use it to descend. A preview build also allowed a second grapple while airborne, making chained swings possible.
Landing is the part that requires the most care. A rope can catch on balconies and other protruding geometry, and reaching the top of the line does not guarantee a ledge grab. Choose a broad, unobstructed destination, keep stamina for the final approach, and leave yourself room to correct. ARC Raiders is live service, so check the current patch and your in-game prompt before relying on any specific behavior.

What the Grappling Hook does
Embark introduced the Grappling Hook with the Frozen Trail update that went live on October 8, 2026. It is a movement gadget built around a simulated rope. Once the hook attaches, the attachment point acts as a pivot: your character can climb toward it, lower down the line, or swing through an arc. That makes it fundamentally different from a button press that simply teleports or pulls you to a target.
PC Gamer staff writer Morgan Park described the behavior after a three-hour hands-on preview published October 7, 2026. His account is useful for understanding the feel of the gadget, but it is not an official control manual or a repeatable laboratory test. The live version can change the rope, stamina, or redeployment rules in a later patch.
#1 Best Overall
- ARC Raiders Deluxe Edition includes the base game and the following content: The Wanderer Set, including the following cosmetic items: “Valente” Outfit" “Pathfinder” Backpack,“Blanket Roll” Backpack Attachment.
- Plus: Character Cosmetic, Finger Gun Rapid Fire Emote, Cowboy Scrappy Body Type and Skin, 2 400 Raider Tokens.
A secondary guide edited October 12, 2026, lists a 20 m reach and says the hook uses stamina for swinging, climbing, and rappelling. Treat those figures as current-guide information rather than confirmed official specifications: Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 notes establish that the new item exists, but do not publish a Grappling Hook range or a complete stamina table.
Set up the gadget before you fire
Put it in a Quick Use slot
The current secondary guide places the Grappling Hook in a Quick Use slot. Open your loadout, select an available Quick Use position, and assign the item before entering a raid. If the item is not in that slot, pressing the gadget control will activate something else or do nothing.
Use the prompt for your platform and bindings
No universal keyboard, PlayStation, or Xbox button sequence is established in the available material. ARC Raiders supports remappable controls, and a patch can change defaults. Look at the control prompt that appears for the equipped gadget, or open the game’s control settings and verify the binding you assigned. This is safer than copying a key or button from a video made on a different build.

Check your route and stamina
Before attaching, identify both the anchor and the place you want to finish. Swinging, climbing, and rappelling consume stamina according to the current secondary guide. Do not spend the entire bar reaching the anchor if you still need to redirect, make a second grapple, or correct your landing.
Aiming and attaching the rope
- Face a usable surface. Aim at solid geometry that appears to provide a clear attachment point. A thin railing, a projecting sign, or a corner partly hidden by another object is more likely to produce an awkward line than a broad wall, roof edge, or exposed structural surface.
- Keep the line of sight clear. Put the reticle on the surface you actually want, not on a nearby balcony lip or piece of cover. Protrusions can snag the rope and change your swing path.
- Judge distance conservatively. The secondary guide reports a 20 m reach, but that number is not confirmed by Embark’s official update page. Treat it as an approximate guide value and aim well inside the apparent limit when a failed attachment would expose you.
- Check the destination. The anchor is only the pivot. Trace the likely arc and look for a wide area where you can arrive without clipping a railing, roof ornament, balcony, or narrow ledge.
- Activate the equipped gadget. Press the currently displayed Grappling Hook control. A successful attachment gives you a rope line and changes your movement options; if nothing happens, reassess the surface, distance, and binding rather than repeatedly wasting stamina.
- Keep moving deliberately. Once attached, use your movement input and camera direction to decide whether you climb, descend, or build a swing. Avoid frantic camera turns until you understand where the rope is pulling you.
Anchor selection guide
| Anchor choice | Why it helps | Risk to check |
|---|---|---|
| Broad wall or exposed roof face | Usually gives a clean line and predictable pivot. | There may be no safe surface at the end of the swing. |
| Open roof edge | Can support a vertical climb or a controlled approach to the roof. | The edge may not perform an automatic ledge grab. |
| Balcony with protruding rails | May be reachable, but provides a possible route around a building. | Park reported ropes snagging on protruding balconies. |
| Thin pole, sign, or cluttered corner | Can offer a tempting shortcut. | Small geometry can produce an awkward angle or an unreliable attachment. |
Climbing, descending, and swinging
Climbing toward the anchor
With the rope attached, movement toward the anchor brings you up the line. This is the most direct use: fire at a higher surface, then advance toward it to gain elevation. Keep the camera on the destination so you can see whether the final approach is clear. Reaching the rope’s upper end is not the same as being placed safely on the roof; be ready to continue moving or redirect.
Descending or rappelling
The same rope can be used to move down from a high anchor. A descent is useful when a direct drop would expose you to fall damage or put you in a bad position, but it still consumes stamina under the current guide’s description. Start with enough reserve to reach the lower area and to disengage or make a correction. Do not assume that every drop can be stopped at an exact height without testing the current movement behavior.

Building a pendulum swing
The rope’s attachment point acts as a pivot. Instead of driving straight at the anchor, move across the arc and allow momentum to carry you sideways. A successful swing requires three things: an anchor within reach, enough clearance around the rope, and a landing zone beyond the gap. Camera direction helps you read the arc, but the rope itself determines the radius; turning the view does not eliminate walls or balconies that lie in the path.
- Attach above or to the far side of the gap rather than directly at your feet.
- Move to build lateral momentum while watching for geometry that can catch the line.
- Keep stamina available for the final movement and any follow-up grapple.
- As you approach the destination, steer toward the broadest clear part of the landing area instead of the narrowest ledge.
Chaining an airborne grapple
Park reported that the preview build allowed the Grappling Hook to be redeployed in midair, with no cooldown or use limit observed during that session. That behavior enabled chained swings across a longer route. It was a preview observation, not a permanent promise. Check the live game’s prompt, charges, cooldown, and stamina behavior before planning a route that depends on a second attachment.
If airborne redeployment is available, make the second target a surface you can see clearly before releasing the first line. A chain is only as reliable as its next anchor; firing at a hidden corner can leave you with no usable pivot and little stamina to recover.

How to land without losing the advantage
Why the hook does not guarantee a ledge grab
The preview account describes two limitations: ropes could snag on protruding balconies, and climbing to the top of the rope sometimes failed to grab a ledge. Therefore, a grapple is not an automatic roof-placement button. You can reach the correct height and still collide with the wrong side of an edge or stop short of a stable surface.
A reliable landing sequence
- Prefer width over distance. A slightly longer route to a broad roof or platform is safer than a short route to a narrow lip.
- Clear the approach. Avoid anchors whose rope path crosses balconies, decorative projections, rails, or other clutter.
- Reserve stamina. Keep enough for the final climb, a controlled descent, or the movement needed after an imperfect grab.
- Approach from the open side. If the destination has an exposed face, guide your arc toward that side rather than into a wall or overhang.
- Correct early. Do not wait until the last instant to turn away from a snag. The rope’s pivot and your momentum make late corrections difficult.
- Confirm stable footing. Treat the landing as complete only when your character is on a surface, not merely level with its edge.
Landing symptoms and responses
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| The rope stops or bends around a balcony. | Protruding geometry has caught the line. | Break the route, choose a cleaner anchor, or approach the destination from an open side. |
| You reach the top of the rope but remain below the roof. | The ledge did not perform an automatic grab. | Keep a stamina reserve, adjust your approach, and use a wider surface rather than assuming the edge will pull you up. |
| The swing falls short. | The anchor, arc, or available stamina was insufficient. | Start from a better angle, select a closer anchor, or use a second grapple only if the live build permits redeployment. |
| The gadget will not fire. | The surface may be out of range or unsuitable, or the binding may differ from the expected control. | Check the on-screen prompt and settings, then aim at a broad, unobstructed surface inside the apparent reach. |
Grappling Hook versus Snap Hook
The two gadgets serve different movement roles. The Grappling Hook gives you a rope and leaves more of the route to your movement, momentum, and landing judgment. Embark describes Snap Hook as burst mobility for quickly closing distance or traversing. The Frozen Trail 2.0 update adjusted Snap Hook so it would retain that identity rather than become a linear upgrade to the new item.
Recommended Free Tools
| Attribute | Grappling Hook | Snap Hook |
|---|---|---|
| Movement model | Simulated rope with an anchor pivot; climb, descend, or swing. | Burst-mobility movement intended to close distance or traverse quickly. |
| Control over route | Higher ongoing control, because the player manages the rope, arc, and landing. | More direct burst movement. |
| Official range in the cited update | Not stated by Embark. | 18 m after the Frozen Trail 2.0 change, down from 20 m. |
| Durability use | Not stated by Embark in the cited update. | 4% per use after the change, up from 2%. |
| Power cost | Not stated by Embark in the cited update. | 60 after the change, up from 50. |
| Best fit | Planned vertical movement, pendulum swings, and routes where you need to choose the landing. | Fast, direct repositioning when a burst is more useful than rope management. |
Those 18 m, 4%, and 60 values belong to Snap Hook, not the Grappling Hook. Embark’s stated design rationale was that the new Grappling Hook should have an identity outside a “linear upgrade” path. Choosing between them is therefore a question of movement style and situation, not a simple ranking by distance.

What is confirmed, and what can change
Established by official updates
- The Grappling Hook was introduced as part of the Frozen Trail update and was live from October 8, 2026.
- Embark adjusted Snap Hook to an 18 m range, 4% durability consumption per use, and 60 power cost in Frozen Trail 2.0; the former values were 20 m, 2%, and 50.
- Embark explained the Snap Hook change as a way to preserve a distinct role now that the Grappling Hook exists.
Observed or reported by secondary coverage
- PC Gamer’s preview describes the rope-and-pivot behavior, snagging on protruding balconies, missed ledge grabs, and airborne redeployment in that preview build.
- The AllThingsHow guide reports a 20 m Grappling Hook reach, stamina use for swinging, climbing, and rappelling, Quick Use placement, acquisition routes, and the crafting recipe.
Not established in the available material
- A universal keyboard or controller binding.
- An official Grappling Hook range, cooldown, charge limit, or stamina number.
- A guaranteed fall-damage reduction, travel-speed figure, grapple success rate, or competitive advantage.
- A guarantee that reaching an anchor automatically places you on its roof or ledge.
Use the in-game prompt and current patch notes for any mechanic that matters to a high-risk route. Live-service balance can change the details without changing the basic principle: the Grappling Hook is a player-managed rope, not an automatic landing system.

A practical decision checklist
- Need a fast, direct burst? Snap Hook’s role is closer to that use case.
- Need to choose your arc or control a descent? The Grappling Hook is the better conceptual fit.
- Is the destination narrow or cluttered? Select a different anchor or take a safer route.
- Is stamina already low? Delay the grapple or shorten the maneuver; climbing, swinging, and rappelling can consume the remaining reserve.
- Would failure leave you exposed? Do not rely on an unverified 20 m limit, an untested redeploy rule, or an automatic ledge grab.
