Pods or capsules normally go directly into the drum, not the drawer. Because drawer layouts differ between models, read the labels on your machine before adding any product.
What each compartment is for
A washing-machine drawer is divided so products enter the wash at different times. The names and positions vary, but these are the functions you will usually see:

| Compartment or dispenser | Purpose | What to check before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Main wash | Detergent for the normal wash cycle | Whether the machine requires liquid or powder, HE detergent, a removable cup, or a selector position |
| Prewash | Detergent or starch released during a selected prewash | Use it only when the cycle includes prewash; do not treat it as a second main-wash section |
| Fabric softener | Softener released during the final rinse | Fill only to the MAX line; automatic and manual dispensers behave differently by model |
| Bleach | Usually liquid chlorine bleach on machines that provide a dedicated bleach section | Product type, dilution capability, and the exact instruction for your model |
| Automatic dispenser reservoir | Stores detergent or softener for metered release over one or more loads | Which reservoir is selected, its fill limit, and whether the machine is set to automatic dosing |
Some drawers combine functions or place them in a different order. Samsung’s UK support guidance describes several manual drawer types and a separate auto-dispenser design; Whirlpool’s instructions for one front-load dispenser direct owners to their washer’s manual for the exact arrangement. Treat the printed labels and model manual as authoritative when they conflict with a general diagram.
Identify the drawer before adding anything
- Pull the drawer out as far as it is designed to travel.
- Read every word, symbol, or molded marking. Look for main wash, prewash, softener, and—on some machines—bleach.
- Check whether the drawer contains a liquid cup, siphon insert, selector, or removable divider.
- Look up the model-specific manual if a marking is missing, unreadable, or different from the product instructions.
- Confirm the cycle you are about to run. A prewash compartment has no purpose on a cycle without prewash, and a product in the wrong section may be released at the wrong time.
Do not choose a compartment by its position alone. Two machines can put the softener section on opposite sides, and an automatic dispenser may not resemble a conventional three-section drawer.

How to add detergent to the main-wash compartment
Use the marked main-wash section
For a standard cycle, place detergent in the section explicitly marked for the main wash. Use the detergent maker’s recommended amount for the load, water conditions, and soil level, while also respecting the washer’s maximum-fill marking. The MAX line limits how much the compartment can hold; it is not a universal dose recommendation.
LG’s covered front-load instructions specify HE detergent. They also distinguish between formats: the liquid detergent cup should be installed for liquid detergent and removed for powder. Your machine may use a different insert or selector, so verify the arrangement in its manual instead of copying another model’s setup.
Liquid detergent
- Install the liquid cup or set the selector to liquid if your drawer requires it.
- Pour detergent into the main-wash section, staying below the relevant maximum line.
- Measure according to the detergent package and washer instructions rather than filling the entire compartment by default.
- Wipe spills from the drawer and surrounding housing so residue does not harden.
Powder detergent
- Remove the liquid cup when the manual instructs you to do so; LG’s covered guidance specifically calls for removal when using powder.
- Put the measured powder in the main-wash section.
- Do not force powder into a reservoir designed only for liquid or automatic dosing.
If powder remains in the drawer, clumps around the insert, or fails to flush away, stop using that configuration until you check the manual. Water pressure, drawer cleanliness, and an incorrectly positioned insert can all affect dispensing.

Where pods, tablets, and capsules go
Single-dose products generally belong in the wash basket or drum, not in the detergent drawer. LG and Samsung guidance says pods or capsules should be placed directly in the drum, and Whirlpool instructs users of its cited front-load design to put single-dose packets in the wash basket before starting.
- Place the packet in the empty drum before loading clothes, unless your product or washer manual specifies another order.
- Add laundry on top of or around it so the packet contacts water promptly.
- Never cut, puncture, or open a single-dose packet.
Do not assume that a pod can be substituted for a drawer dose simply because both are labeled detergent. The packet’s coating and release timing are designed for the drum environment, while the drawer may retain or release it incompletely.

Using the prewash compartment
The prewash section is for detergent or starch used by a cycle that has a prewash stage. It is separate from the main-wash section because the product is released earlier.
When to use it
Select a cycle with prewash when garments need an initial loosening of heavy soil. Add the amount specified for the prewash by the detergent maker and washer manual, then put the normal wash dose in the main-wash compartment if the instructions call for both.
When not to use it
Do not put all of your detergent in the prewash section for an ordinary cycle. If the selected program skips prewash, that product may remain in the drawer or enter at an unintended point. Samsung’s manual-drawer guidance identifies the prewash section for prewash detergent or starch; it does not make that section a universal substitute for the main wash.
How to fill the fabric-softener compartment
Use the softener-marked section
Pour liquid fabric softener into the compartment labeled for softener. On the covered LG guidance, the dispenser releases it during the final rinse. Samsung notes that automatic-dispensing behavior and drawer layouts depend on the model, so do not expect every machine to release softener in exactly the same way.
Stay below MAX
Fill only to the visible MAX line. The line is a capacity limit, not a recommendation to use that much softener. Measure the product using its package directions and the washer’s instructions. Overfilling can cause premature siphoning, residue, or softener entering the load too early.

Keep softener out of the detergent section
Do not pour softener into the main-wash compartment unless the model manual explicitly directs that arrangement. Softener is intended for a later rinse; putting it in the detergent section can release it with the wash water and leave an unwanted coating on fabrics.
For concentrated products
Follow the softener label for any required dilution. Do not improvise a dilution ratio, and do not exceed the drawer’s MAX line after dilution. If the siphon insert is removable, clean and reinstall it exactly as the manual shows.
Using the bleach compartment safely
Confirm the product and the compartment
Bleach placement is the least universal part of drawer guidance. Whirlpool’s cited front-load dispenser has a section for liquid chlorine bleach, dispensed at the first rinse after washing, and that section cannot dilute powdered bleach. LG’s instructions distinguish liquid chlorine bleach from color-safe bleach and warn against putting liquid chlorine bleach in the wrong compartment.
Before adding bleach, verify all three items:
- Whether the product is liquid chlorine bleach, color-safe bleach, or a powder.
- Whether your machine has a bleach-marked section and what form it accepts.
- How much the washer and product instructions permit.
Liquid chlorine bleach
Use liquid chlorine bleach only in a compartment explicitly intended for it, and only when the manual permits it for the selected cycle. Measure it first. LG’s official wording is direct: “Always measure out the amount of bleach before use. Do not try to guess by pouring.” Keep the amount below the relevant MAX line, avoid splashing, and never pour it into a detergent or softener section unless the manual specifically says that compartment is designed for bleach.
Color-safe bleach
LG’s covered instructions allow color-safe bleach in the main detergent compartment with detergent. That is a model-specific instruction, not a universal rule. Check your own manual and the bleach label before combining products in one section.

Powdered bleach
Do not put powdered bleach into a dispenser designed to dilute liquid chlorine bleach. Whirlpool’s guidance states that its cited bleach section cannot dilute powdered bleach. If your manual does not explain where a powdered product belongs, do not guess; use the product’s instructions and contact the manufacturer if necessary.
Never mix incompatible products
Keep bleach separate from detergents, softeners, acids, and other additives unless the washer and product instructions explicitly authorize the combination. Rinse a compartment before changing products, and clean spills immediately.
Manual drawers versus automatic dispensers
| Feature | Manual drawer | Automatic dispenser |
|---|---|---|
| Loading | Add the measured product for each load to the labeled section | Fill the designated reservoir and select or enable automatic dosing |
| Timing | The machine flushes each section according to the selected cycle | The machine meters product according to its programmed settings |
| Format limits | Liquid, powder, and pods may have different instructions | Reservoirs may accept only a specified product type |
| Maintenance | Remove residue from compartments and inserts | Clean reservoirs, sensors, and lines as directed by the manual |
| Risk of overfill | Exceeding MAX can cause early release or overflow | Overfilling a reservoir can interfere with dosing or create spills |
Samsung’s support material describes both manual drawer types and an auto-dispenser type. The existence of an automatic system is evidence that “the detergent compartment” is not a single universal design. Read the reservoir labels and dosing settings before filling it.
A complete loading routine
- Choose the cycle. Check whether it includes prewash, an extra rinse, or another stage that changes when additives are released.
- Inspect the drawer. Identify the labeled main-wash, prewash, softener, and bleach sections and check that inserts are seated correctly.
- Select the detergent format. For liquid or powder, use the main-wash section and the required cup or selector. For a pod or capsule, put it in the drum instead.
- Measure detergent. Follow the package and washer directions; do not use the drawer’s MAX line as a dose guide.
- Add prewash product only when needed. Put the specified amount in the prewash section if the selected cycle includes prewash.
- Measure softener. Pour it into the softener section and stop below MAX.
- Check bleach instructions. Confirm the product type and compartment before adding any bleach. If the manual is unclear, leave it out until you have verified the correct procedure.
- Load the clothes. For pods, ensure the packet is already in the drum before loading.
- Close the drawer fully. Follow the manual’s instruction for closing it; do not start a cycle with the drawer partially open.
- Start the cycle and observe problems. Afterward, inspect the drawer and load for undissolved product, early softener release, or bleach residue.
Common mistakes and fixes
Detergent remains in the drawer
- Check that the liquid cup or powder insert is in the correct position.
- Confirm that the product is allowed in that section.
- Clean hardened residue from the drawer and housing.
- Verify that the drawer is fully closed and that the water supply and inlet screens are not restricted.
Softener enters too early
- Confirm that softener is in the softener section, not the main-wash section.
- Lower the fill below MAX.
- Clean and reseat the siphon insert.
- Check whether the machine is an automatic-dispenser model with a separate dosing setting.
A pod does not dissolve
Check that it was placed in the drum rather than the drawer and that the cycle provides enough water and agitation for the product. Follow the pod and washer instructions for temperature and loading.
Bleach appears in the wrong stage
Stop using that compartment until you confirm the model’s bleach path. A dedicated bleach section may release liquid chlorine bleach at a rinse stage, while another model may place a compatible color-safe product in the main-wash compartment. Do not compensate by adding more product.

The drawer overflows
Reduce the amount to the package and washer recommendation, remain below MAX, and check for residue blocking the siphon or flush channels. Automatic reservoirs should be filled only as far as their own markings allow.
Cleaning and maintenance
- Remove the drawer only as far as the manual permits and release its latch if one is provided.
- Rinse each section with warm water and remove detergent or softener buildup.
- Clean the drawer cavity and flush openings with a soft brush or cloth.
- Wash removable cups and siphon pieces separately, then reinstall them in the correct orientation.
- Wipe chlorine-bleach spills immediately and follow the product safety directions.
- Leave the drawer open after a cycle when practical so moisture can evaporate.
Do not mix cleaning chemicals in the drawer. If buildup persists or the machine fails to flush a compartment, use the troubleshooting procedure in the model manual rather than forcing water or tools into internal channels.
How manufacturer guidance differs
LG
LG USA Support’s “LG Washer – Detergent and Additive Usage,” dated December 15, 2025, distinguishes front-load and top-load instructions. Its covered front-load guidance calls for HE detergent, a liquid cup installed for liquid and removed for powder, pods in the drum, softener below MAX, and separate handling for liquid chlorine and color-safe bleach.

Whirlpool
Whirlpool Product Help describes a particular front-load single-load dispenser: liquid or powdered HE detergent in the detergent section, softener in its own compartment, and liquid chlorine bleach in a bleach section that dispenses at the first rinse. That bleach section cannot dilute powdered bleach. Whirlpool directs owners to the manual for their specific washer.
Samsung
Samsung UK Support, updated May 29, 2026, documents multiple manual drawer types and an auto-dispenser design. Its described manual layouts include main-wash, softener, and prewash sections; the prewash section is for prewash detergent or starch, softener must remain below MAX, and tablets or capsules go in the drum. The guidance also shows why one brand’s diagram cannot be assumed to fit another model.
When to stop and consult the manual
- The drawer has no clear labels or the markings disagree with a generic diagram.
- You want to use powdered bleach, a specialty additive, or a product not named in the manual.
- Your machine has an automatic reservoir and you are unsure which product it accepts.
- A liquid cup, siphon, or selector can be moved but its correct position is unclear.
- Products remain undissolved, softener releases during the wash, or bleach appears at an unexpected stage.
- The package and washer instructions specify different amounts or compartments.
In each case, use the model number to obtain the correct owner’s manual or manufacturer support instructions. General advice can identify the usual purpose of a section, but it cannot replace the dispenser diagram for your exact washer.
