When execution pauses, inspect the current values in Scope and Watch, check the Call Stack, then step through the code to find where behavior changes. Use event, DOM-change, or exception breakpoints when the trigger is more useful than a specific line.
Open Sources and find the code
Chrome DevTools is built into Google Chrome; this workflow does not require a separate debugger product. Open DevTools and choose Sources, the panel Chrome’s documentation identifies as the place to debug JavaScript. The panel includes a file tree, code editor, and debugger controls. Pane locations can shift with the DevTools window width.
- Open DevTools in Chrome and select Sources.
- Use the file tree to locate the script associated with the behavior. If you cannot identify it yet, reproduce the problem and inspect the scripts involved as you narrow down the trigger.
- Open the relevant file in the editor. If the code is bundled or minified, see the source-map section below.
Set a breakpoint and reproduce the problem
A line breakpoint is the best starting point when you have a likely statement to inspect. Click the line number in the Sources editor. Then repeat the action that triggers the bug. Chrome pauses when execution reaches that line, letting you inspect the state at that moment rather than infer it from log output.
If the line does not pause, check that the action actually runs the script and reaches that code path. A breakpoint cannot stop on a statement that is not executed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Inspect values while execution is paused
Scope: values available here
Use Scope to inspect local, closure, and global properties available at the current pause. These are the values visible to the code at that point in execution.
Watch: expressions you choose
Add valid JavaScript expressions to Watch when you want to track particular values while stepping. Watch refreshes the expressions as execution advances. Scope shows what is in scope; Watch focuses on expressions you selected.

Console: test an expression in context
The Console can evaluate expressions in the paused execution context. Use it to inspect a value or test a small expression without adding logging statements to the application.
Step through code and trace the call path
Debugger stepping helps distinguish whether a problem is in the current function, a function it calls, or the code that called it. Use the controls according to how much detail you need:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Step into: enter a relevant function call to see what happens inside it.
- Step over: run a call without entering it and continue to the next statement in the current function.
- Step out: finish the current function and return to its caller.
- Continue to here: when the target is a later line in the same function, use the editor’s context action to run to that location.
- Resume: continue execution until another breakpoint or pause condition is reached.
Read the Call Stack to see the frames that led to the pause. Select a frame to inspect its call site. Async frames may appear when the framework supports async stack tagging; their availability is not guaranteed for every asynchronous path.
Choose the breakpoint that matches the trigger
When you do not know which line to stop on, choose a breakpoint based on what seems to trigger the problem.

| Breakpoint type | Use it when | What it stops on |
|---|---|---|
| Line | You suspect a particular statement or have narrowed the problem to a function. | Execution reaching the selected line. |
| Event listener | A browser or interface event appears to trigger the issue. | Selected event handlers as they run. |
| DOM change | A particular element changes unexpectedly. | Changes to the selected node, its attributes, or its children. |
| Exception | An error is thrown and you need to inspect the state at that moment. | Caught or uncaught exceptions, depending on the configured option. |
| Function | You know the in-scope function to watch but not where it is called. | Calls to that function when set with debug(functionName). |
Use a line breakpoint when the likely statement is known; use an event or DOM-change breakpoint to locate code reached through a trigger or mutation; use an exception breakpoint to stop at an error. For exceptions in Node.js, Chrome’s documentation notes a limitation involving caught exceptions, so behavior may differ from what you expect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Debug bundled or minified code with source maps
Chrome executes the deployed JavaScript, which may be compiled or minified. DevTools can map that output back to authored files using source maps, allowing breakpoints, errors, and logs to correspond to the original source. This works only if the build produces usable maps and the server makes them available to the browser.

If authored files do not appear, check that source maps were generated and that the browser can load them. A missing authored view does not by itself mean the debugger is broken.
Common debugging snags
- The breakpoint never pauses: Confirm the interaction reaches the selected line, and make sure you are debugging the script that actually runs.
- Scope does not show the value you expected: Check that the selected Call Stack frame is the relevant one. A variable may not be in scope at the current line or in that frame.
- Watch does not track the intended value: Ensure the entry is a valid JavaScript expression and is meaningful in the current execution context.
- The call stack does not show async history: Async frames depend in part on framework support for async stack tagging.
- Authored source files are missing: Verify that the build generated source maps and the server serves them so Chrome can load them.
- An exception breakpoint misses a caught error: Check whether the breakpoint is configured for caught exceptions and account for the documented Node.js limitation.
- A live edit does not apply: Editing a paused function has restrictions. The function must be at the top of the Call Stack; recursive calls and certain function types also have limits. Treat live editing as a debugging aid, then make and test the normal source change.

If what you need is a screenshot of a page rather than a JavaScript execution trace, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for the Sources debugger: it captures page output, while DevTools helps you locate and inspect code behavior.
cURL example, returning a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents to take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.
