Keep the Basic Camera in your backpack, assign it to a Quick Use slot, equip it with Q, aim with the right mouse button, frame the required subject, take the picture, and extract safely. A Destructoid guide reports that a Camera carried when your Raider dies is lost. Embark’s official Frozen Trail 2.0 notes introduce the Camera and its photo objectives but do not state a Camera-specific death-loss rule, so treat the loss warning as reported guide information rather than a confirmed exception in the game’s rules.
What the Camera does in ARC Raiders
The Camera is an in-game Quick Use gadget, not a piece of real-world equipment. Frozen Trail 2.0 added Basic and Advanced Cameras and made photography part of several objectives. The first Outpost-unlock research step requires you to accept the research and photograph a farmland house. The same update changed older quests so that their objectives require photos taken with the new Camera.

The Basic Camera is classified as an Uncommon Gadget. Its job is to let your Raider take objective photos and selfies; it is not a permanent tool that remains available in every deployment. You must bring an actual Camera into the run, put it in a Quick Use slot, use it, and then survive long enough to extract if you want to retain the item you carried.
Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 update notes, published October 8, 2026, are the authoritative source for the feature’s introduction and quest changes. The control sequence below comes from a Destructoid guide published and updated the same day.

How to get a Basic Camera
You have four documented ways to obtain the Basic Camera. Which route is best depends on what is already in your stash, whether your Workbench is upgraded, and how dangerous the current objective is.
| Route | What you need or do | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting | Use Workbench 1; spend 8 Plastic Parts and 1 Wire to produce one Basic Camera. | Best when you have the materials and want a predictable source. |
| Scavenging | Find a Camera as loot during a deployment. | Useful when you are already searching the map, but availability is not guaranteed. |
| Buying from Shani | Check Shani’s current offers for a Camera. | Convenient when the item is stocked and you have enough currency. |
| Quest rewards | Receive one through the Sizing Things Up or Taking Stock quests. | Use the quest-provided item before spending crafting materials, if the reward is available to you. |
These acquisition routes and the Basic Camera’s item classification are listed in the Basic Camera item reference. The reference is unofficial, so confirm the name and availability in your current game build.
Crafting recipe and recycling value
At Workbench 1, the recipe is 8 Plastic Parts plus 1 Wire for one Basic Camera. The same item reference lists a return of 5 Plastic Parts when you recycle one Basic Camera. Recycling therefore does not recover the full crafting cost: you lose the Wire and three Plastic Parts compared with the recipe’s input.

Because the reported death behavior can remove a carried Camera, producing several in advance can expose more materials than necessary to a failed deployment. Keep additional materials in storage until you are ready to make another one.
Buying from Shani
Frozen Trail 2.0 confirms that Shani’s offers include Cameras. The update does not publish a current price, stock quantity, or refresh schedule. Check Shani’s live inventory before planning around a purchase; do not treat an old price from a third-party guide as a permanent value.

Quest-provided Cameras
The item reference identifies Sizing Things Up and Taking Stock as quest routes for receiving a Basic Camera. If one of those quests is active, inspect its reward and objective screens before crafting. A quest reward can save the 8 Plastic Parts and 1 Wire needed for a crafted copy, but you still need to bring the resulting item into a deployment and complete the photo objective.
Assign and equip the Camera
Having a Camera in your backpack is not enough. The reported control flow requires it to be assigned to a Quick Use slot before you enter the photo sequence.

- Locate the Basic Camera in your backpack.
- Move or assign it to an available Quick Use slot.
- Confirm that the Camera icon appears in that slot rather than remaining only in general storage.
- Deploy with the Camera still in your backpack. A Camera left in a stash cannot be selected during the run.
Once you are in the map, press Q to equip the Camera, according to the Destructoid control guide. If Q does not select it, check that the item is in the active Quick Use slot and review your current key bindings; a custom keyboard layout can replace the default key.
Take a photo step by step
- Reach the objective area. Move to the location named by the quest or research step before exposing the Camera. For the Outpost research opening, the target is a farmland house.
- Equip the Camera. Press Q. Your normal weapon or tool is replaced by the Camera view.
- Aim through the viewfinder. Hold or press the right mouse button (RMB) to aim, following the guide’s default controls.
- Adjust zoom. Use the Camera’s zoom control to make the subject identifiable and keep it inside the frame. Zoom is useful for a distant structure, but do not zoom so tightly that the required landmark is cut off.
- Compose the shot. Center the named subject and wait for the objective prompt or completion indicator if the game displays one. A picture of the wrong building, a partial landmark, or empty scenery may not satisfy the task.
- Take the picture. Use the Camera’s shutter control shown on your HUD. The exact fire button can reflect your current bindings, so follow the on-screen prompt rather than assuming an unmodified layout.
- Verify completion. Open the objective tracker or quest screen and confirm that the photo step changed state before leaving the area.
- Extract. Once the objective is recorded, reach an extraction point and complete the extraction instead of treating the successful photograph as the end of the run.
The documented default sequence is Q to equip, RMB to aim, adjust zoom, then take the photo. The guide does not establish a universal distance, zoom level, or shutter key for every control configuration, so use the HUD prompt if you have changed bindings or are playing with a different input device.
Photo objectives added in Frozen Trail 2.0
Photography is not limited to the initial Outpost research step. Embark says the update changed several existing quests to require photos with the new Camera:

Can you lose the Camera when you die?
A Destructoid guide reports that a Camera carried in the backpack is lost if the Raider dies. That is the practical risk you should plan around when taking a Camera into a dangerous run. However, Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 announcement does not document a Camera-specific death-loss rule. The safest wording is therefore: a published guide reports the loss, while the official update does not independently confirm it.
Do not assume that taking the picture protects the item. Completing the photo objective and retaining the carried gadget are separate outcomes. If you die before extraction, the guide’s reported behavior means the Camera you brought may be gone even though the objective was completed.
How to minimize the chance of losing it
Bring only what the objective requires
Carry one Camera for one photo run unless the quest explicitly needs multiple photos or your squad has a clear reason to share spares. A second copy increases the amount of gear exposed to the reported death-loss risk without improving a single-photo objective.
Prepare before you deploy
- Confirm that the Camera is in your backpack, not only in storage.
- Assign it to Quick Use and verify the slot icon.
- Read the objective so you know the destination and target.
- Choose a route that lets you approach, photograph, and extract without unnecessary detours.
- Check that your controls show the expected equip and aim bindings.
Take the photo promptly
Once you reach a reasonably safe position with a clear view, complete the photo instead of carrying the Camera through additional fights or loot stops. This is risk-reduction advice inferred from the reported loss behavior and the game’s extraction structure, not a separately documented Camera mechanic.

- Enjoy expansive cinematic sound. Big 50 mm audio drivers deliver an incredible sound experience
- Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Extract after the objective registers
Watch for the objective tracker to update, then leave through extraction. A completed photograph is not a substitute for a successful extraction when your goal is to keep the carried Camera and any other gear. If the area becomes unsafe, retreat and wait for a better deployment rather than forcing a low-probability attempt with a replacement item.

| Question | Craft | Buy from Shani | Scavenge | Quest reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Is availability predictable? | Yes, if you have Workbench 1 and the materials. | No; stock can change, and the current update does not state quantities. | No; it depends on finding one during a run. | Only when the named quest and reward are available. |
| Known cost | 8 Plastic Parts and 1 Wire per Camera. | Current price not stated in the update. | No listed crafting cost, but it requires deployment risk. | No separate recipe cost is listed for the reward. |
| Main risk | Materials are spent before a potentially fatal run. | You may arrive when the item is not offered. | You may not find one before extraction or may lose it on death. | The reward is tied to quest progression. |
| Best use | Make a planned replacement before a known photo objective. | Use when Shani has a Camera and the purchase is worthwhile. | Take advantage of a Camera found while already looting. | Use the provided item before spending stored materials. |
There is no documented universal winner. Compare your live inventory, Shani’s current offer, quest availability, and the safety of the route you intend to take. The official update confirms Shani’s Camera availability but leaves price and stock unstated; the item reference supplies the crafting and recycling numbers.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Camera does not appear when I press Q
- Make sure the item is in the backpack you deployed with.
- Assign it to Quick Use rather than leaving it in general storage.
- Check whether another gadget occupies the active slot.
- Review key bindings if Q was remapped.
The photo does not count
- Re-read the objective for the exact subject; a nearby landmark may not be the required one.
- Move closer or adjust zoom so the subject is clearly framed.
- Keep the camera steady until the shutter completes.
- Check the quest tracker after taking the picture rather than assuming the image registered.
Shani is not selling a Camera
The official notes confirm that Cameras can appear in Shani’s offers, not that every refresh will contain one. Check again later or use the Workbench 1 recipe if you have 8 Plastic Parts and 1 Wire. Scavenging and the two listed quest routes are additional alternatives.
I completed the objective but died afterward
The photo may remain credited to the quest while the carried Camera is lost, because objective completion and item retention are different events. If the guide’s reported death behavior applies to your run, craft, buy, scavenge, or earn another Camera before trying again.

A safe, repeatable Camera run
- Obtain one Basic Camera through the least costly available route.
- Put it in your backpack and assign it to Quick Use.
- Read the exact quest target and plan the shortest sensible approach.
- Enter the map with no unnecessary spare Cameras.
- Reach a defensible position, press Q, aim with RMB, adjust zoom, and take the required photo.
- Confirm the objective tracker updated.
- Leave immediately enough to avoid turning a completed objective into a lost deployment.
- After extraction, recycle an unwanted spare only if you accept the 5-Plastic-Parts return listed for the Basic Camera.
This procedure addresses the two separate tasks that cause most frustration: getting the Camera recognized by the controls and preserving it after the photograph. The first is an equipment and input setup issue; the second depends on surviving and extracting, with the death-loss warning currently coming from a guide rather than a Camera-specific rule in Embark’s update notes.
