For the corded BISSELL Little Green models covered by the manufacturer’s getting-started guide, the basic routine is: vacuum loose debris, fill the clean-water tank to its marked lines, spray and gently scrub the spot, then slowly extract the moisture. First check the model number: Little Green is a product family, and setup steps can differ between models.
Check which Little Green model you have
Find the model number on the label on the lower back or bottom of the machine, or behind the tanks. BISSELL’s main getting-started guide covers models 1400, 1425, 50Y6, 4098E, 4098N and 1400P; accessories may vary. Other family members, including Cordless, Pet Pro and Mini models, may have different instructions. Use the guide for your exact model rather than carrying over tank quantities or priming steps. How to use the corded Little Green
- Vacuum the area first. Remove loose dirt and solids with a dry vacuum so debris is less likely to clog the cleaner. Pretreating the stain is optional; if you use a pretreatment product, BISSELL’s guide says to let it sit for a few minutes.
- Fill the clean-water tank. Remove the tank and open its cap. Add warm tap water no hotter than 140°F (60°C), then add compatible portable carpet-cleaner formula according to the water and formula markings on the tank. There is no single fill quantity established for every model. BISSELL recommends its own formula for optimal performance. Close the cap securely and reinstall the tank until it clicks.
- Set up the cleaner. Release the hose, remove the power cord, attach the tool you want to use, and plug the machine into a nearby outlet. Switch it on.
- Prime the pump and spray. Hold the spray trigger to dispense solution. The corded models in the guide may take up to 30 seconds to begin spraying. Hold the tool a few inches above the spot while applying solution.
- Scrub gently. Release the trigger and use the scrubbing portion of the tool on the treated area.
- Extract the moisture. Tilt the tool forward so its suction channel makes firm contact with the surface. Move it slowly backward over the wet area. Continue until the stain is gone or no more water is visibly entering the nozzle.
- Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank. Turn off the machine. Lift the tank’s retainer lever, remove the tank, and empty it slowly. Rinse away loose debris, reinstall the tank, and press the retainer until it clicks.
How much water and formula should you use?
Use the water and formula lines on your machine’s clean-water tank; do not assume an ounce ratio applies across all Little Green models. For the corded models in BISSELL’s guide, water must be warm tap water at or below 140°F (60°C). Hotter water can deform the tank and affect machine performance. Follow the directions on the formula bottle as well as the markings for your model.
When to empty the dirty-water tank
Empty the tank when it reaches its FULL line and after cleaning. Do not let liquid rise above that line. A change in the machine’s sound or reduced suction can also indicate that the tank is full. Turn the cleaner off before removing the tank, then rinse away debris before putting it back.

If the cleaner does not spray
BISSELL’s spray troubleshooting guide recommends checking these points:
- Make sure you are using formula.
- Check for debris beneath the clean-water tank. Turn the machine off and unplug it before cleaning this area.
- Make sure the tank cap is fully secured.
If the problem remains, follow troubleshooting for your exact model; not every fix necessarily applies to every Little Green variant.

BISSELL says the corded models in its getting-started guide are compatible with BISSELL portable carpet-cleaner formulas and recommends genuine BISSELL formula for optimal performance. Check that any formula is suitable for your model and follow its bottle directions. For example, BISSELL’s 1400W product page identifies that model as a Little Green Pet Portable Carpet Cleaner and lists a 32 oz. PRO OXY Spot & Stain formula as a replenishment item; that listing does not establish what every Little Green includes or requires.
