How to Use the Best Gadget in ARC Raiders: A Practical Guide

There is no single strongest gadget in ARC Raiders. The right choice depends on the job you need to perform: gaining vertical mobility, making a short reposition, hiding from ARC machines, gathering information, controlling a doorway, or sending a signal. For general movement, the Grappling Hook is the most flexible option described in current hands-on coverage, but its learning curve and attachment limits make role-based selection more reliable than a universal ranking.

This guide explains how to equip and activate gadgets, what each major option does, how to use the Grappling Hook safely after the October 13, 2026 update, and how to choose a tool for your route and encounter.

What “best gadget” means in ARC Raiders

A gadget is best when it solves the problem that is most likely to end your raid. A rooftop route calls for a different tool than a stealthy pass through an ARC patrol, and a squad trying to hold a room has different needs from a solo player escaping across open ground.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these five questions before choosing:

  • What movement does the route require? Vertical climbs, roof-to-roof swings, a short 20-meter pull, and a prepared zipline are not interchangeable.
  • Are you avoiding machines or other Raiders? The Photoelectric Cloak conceals you from ARC, but it does not make you invisible to players and produces a loud beep.
  • Do you need information? The Noisemaker is intended to detect nearby enemy Raiders rather than move you.
  • Can you control access? The Door Blocker is useful only where its placement requirements are met and where restricting an eligible door helps your plan.
  • Do you need to communicate danger? The Remote Raider Flare lets you manually send a distress signal.

Current sources do not provide a controlled, cross-platform test that proves one gadget has the highest overall effectiveness. Treat the recommendations below as task-fit guidance, not a permanent tier list. ARC Raiders is a live game, so item descriptions, controls, crafting requirements, trader stock, and behavior can change.

How to equip and activate a gadget

Put the gadget in your raid loadout

Gadgets must be prepared before you go topside. Equip the item from your inventory or loadout screen, then assign it to a Quick Use slot. Taking a gadget into your inventory without assigning it to a usable slot can leave you without the quick activation flow described in the current guide.

  1. Open your inventory or loadout before deploying.
  2. Select the gadget you want to carry.
  3. Assign it to a Quick Use slot.
  4. Confirm that the item appears in the slot before starting the raid.

Open the Quick Use wheel

On PC, the current guide reports that holding Q opens the Quick Use wheel. Select the equipped gadget, then perform its activation or placement action. Q is a reported PC default, not a guarantee for every platform, keyboard layout, controller profile, or remapped setup.

  1. Hold Q on an unmodified PC control layout.
  2. Move the selection to the gadget you assigned.
  3. Release or confirm the selection according to the on-screen prompt.
  4. Use the gadget’s activation or placement input. Movement tools generally require a valid attachment or placement point, while held tools remain active only while their usage supply lasts.

If Q does nothing, open the game’s controls menu and find the current Quick Use or gadget-wheel binding. A remapped key, a different platform layout, or a changed default can all make the reported PC shortcut inapplicable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the item prompt before committing

Look for the in-game placement or activation indicator. A movement gadget can fail when there is no valid surface, while a Door Blocker or Zipline may require a suitable location. Confirming the prompt before you expose yourself is faster than discovering a restriction in the middle of a fight.

Gadget roles at a glance

Gadget Primary job Known behavior or constraint Choose it when
Grappling Hook Flexible vertical and horizontal traversal Can climb, swing between rooftops, descend, and be redeployed in midair according to preview coverage; attachment points, ledges, geometry, and large targets can be difficult. Your route depends on changing elevation or you need several movement options in one slot.
Snap Hook Short-range traversal Listed as a 20 m tool with a slowly refilling use bar and three uses at full charge. Verify the current in-game description. You need a predictable, short reposition rather than a swing-based route.
Photoelectric Cloak Concealment from ARC Held tool with a slowly refilling usage bar; it does not hide you from other players and emits a loud beep. An ARC patrol, rather than a Raider, is the immediate detection problem.
Noisemaker Information about nearby enemy Raiders Designed to detect nearby enemy Raiders instead of providing movement or concealment. You need awareness before opening a route, room, or extraction path.
Door Blocker Access control Restricts access to eligible doors; placement depends on the door meeting its requirements. A defensible doorway is more valuable than extra mobility.
Remote Raider Flare Manual distress signaling Sends a distress signal when activated. You deliberately want to signal for help or create a visible distress event.
Zipline Rapid traversal Useful where its placement requirements are met. You can prepare a route in advance and have a suitable anchor or placement location.

The table separates gadgets by purpose because they do not duplicate one another. A Snap Hook is not a smaller Grappling Hook in every situation, and a Cloak is not an alternative to information or access control. Pick the tool that changes your immediate risk.

Grappling Hook: the most flexible movement option

In a preview published October 7, Morgan Park of PC Gamer described using the Grappling Hook to climb onto buildings, swing between rooftops, descend safely, and interact with flying ARC. The same report said the hook could attach to many surfaces and could be redeployed in midair to chain swings. Those observations came from hands-on preview play, not a controlled performance test or a guarantee that every surface behaves identically in the live game.

Climb toward a roof or ledge

Start by looking for a clearly reachable attachment point above or ahead of you. Fire the hook, then use the rope to gain height instead of treating it as a simple horizontal pull. As you approach the top, keep your camera and movement aligned with the walkable area where you intend to land. A ledge grab can fail if your approach is too shallow, the target is not valid, or nearby geometry interferes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every roof edge is equally forgiving. The preview coverage reported failed ledge grabs and ropes catching on geometry. Build a habit of identifying a second landing option before committing to the first hook.

Swing between rooftops

For a roof-to-roof crossing, use the rope as a pivot rather than waiting for a straight-line pull. Attach to a point that gives you room to swing, then steer toward the next walkable surface. The useful sequence is:

  1. Choose an attachment point with a clear arc around it.
  2. Fire and allow the rope to create movement toward the target roof.
  3. Steer your character and camera toward the landing area while the swing develops.
  4. Release or transition when the next surface is reachable, rather than carrying excess momentum into an edge.
  5. If the first landing is poor, look for a second attachment point instead of forcing a jump.

Preview coverage reported that the hook could be redeployed in midair without a cooldown or use limit. Use that capability to correct a developing swing, catch a new point, or extend a route. Because this was an observed preview behavior, check the live item behavior and on-screen prompts before planning an entire raid around unlimited chaining.

Descend instead of dropping

The hook is also a descent tool. Attach below or to the side of your position and use the rope to control a drop toward walkable ground. This can be safer than stepping from a high roof, but it still depends on a valid attachment point and clear geometry. Aim to finish over ground you can actually traverse; a rope that ends against a wall, narrow lip, or cluttered object can leave you exposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the hook around flying ARC

The October 7 preview described interacting with flying ARC while using the hook. In practical terms, the tool can change your angle and elevation during an encounter rather than locking you to street level. Treat this as a movement opportunity, not proof that the hook automatically defeats or disables an ARC unit. You still need a valid point, a safe landing, and an exit plan if the machine continues the engagement.

What changed in the October 13, 2026 update

Embark’s official October 13 update notes state: “Made it easier to vault onto ledges and roofs when using the Grappling Hook, especially on Pendola Pass. Auto-vault now triggers more reliably at the top of rope climbs, and ending a swing on walkable ground is more consistent.”

The same update lists fixes for hooks swinging from objects too light to hold the player, detaching from fast-moving objects, wrapping around geometry in flight, and behavior when a player is downed. These changes address specific failure cases; they do not remove the need to check attachment points or account for map geometry.

A short practice routine

Before relying on the hook during a high-value run, practice four repeatable actions in a low-pressure area:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Climb to a roof and finish with the auto-vault prompt or animation.
  2. Swing to a nearby roof and deliberately land on walkable ground.
  3. Descend to a lower surface without dropping into an unintended area.
  4. Redeploy in midair to correct a miss, then identify where the rope catches or loses a valid line.

Practice the camera movement as much as the button press. Most reported difficulties involve the relationship between the target surface, rope path, and landing geometry, not simply locating the gadget in the wheel.

When the Snap Hook is the better choice

The Snap Hook is the straightforward option for a short reposition. The current gadget guide lists it as a 20 m tool with a slowly refilling use bar and three uses at full charge. Because item values can change, read the live description before treating those figures as permanent.

Choose the Snap Hook when your route needs a compact, repeatable movement burst rather than a long swing or multi-stage climb. It can be easier to plan around a known distance, but the charge behavior means you should not spend every use casually. Keep at least one use for the part of the route where a short pull prevents a dangerous exposure or closes a gap.

How to use the Photoelectric Cloak correctly

The Photoelectric Cloak is for avoiding ARC detection, not for becoming universally invisible. The guide describes it as a held tool with a slowly refilling usage bar. While active, it conceals the user from ARC, but other players can still see you, and the cloak emits a loud beep.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Use it for machine sightlines

Activate the Cloak when an ARC patrol is the obstacle and you need to cross or wait through its detection area. Plan the route first so the usage bar is spent while you are actually exposed. A cloak that runs while you stand behind solid cover provides less value than one used during the crossing itself.

Do not treat the beep as silent movement

The loud beep creates an audio cost. Even if an ARC unit does not detect you, a nearby Raider may hear the activation or active sound and investigate. Avoid presenting the Cloak as a stealth solution against human opponents; it solves a narrower machine-avoidance problem.

Information, access, signaling, and prepared routes

Noisemaker: check for Raiders before committing

The Noisemaker is listed as a tool for detecting nearby enemy Raiders. Select it when uncertainty about another player is the main threat. Use the information before opening a door, crossing a choke point, or beginning an exposed interaction. It does not replace a movement gadget, so bring it when knowing whether a Raider is nearby matters more than gaining another escape line.

Door Blocker: turn an eligible door into a controlled entrance

The Door Blocker restricts access to eligible doors. Its value depends on the location: a blocker at a defensible entrance can buy time, while one placed on an irrelevant door changes little. Confirm that the door meets the gadget’s placement requirements and consider how you will leave if the blocked route becomes your only route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote Raider Flare: send a deliberate distress signal

The Remote Raider Flare manually sends a distress signal. It is a signaling choice, not a panic button that should be activated automatically. Use it when attracting attention is intentional—for example, when you want to communicate distress or create a known event for allies. If remaining unnoticed is the priority, choose a different gadget.

Zipline: prepare a fast route where placement allows

The Zipline provides rapid traversal where its placement requirements are met. Its usefulness is map- and position-dependent: you need a suitable location before it can become an escape or crossing route. Check the placement prompt before committing, and avoid assuming that every roof, gap, or anchor supports it.

Choosing a gadget for common situations

You need to reach rooftops or change elevation repeatedly

Start with the Grappling Hook. Its reported ability to climb, swing, descend, and redeploy in midair gives it the broadest movement vocabulary in the current coverage. Accept the practice requirement and leave room for ledge, rope, and geometry failures.

You need one short, predictable reposition

Choose the Snap Hook when a 20 m movement tool and its refilling use bar match the route. Preserve charges for the point where the short pull changes your exposure rather than using all three full-charge uses on convenience movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An ARC patrol is blocking the safest crossing

Choose the Photoelectric Cloak, but budget its slowly refilling usage bar and remember the loud beep. It protects against ARC detection, not against Raiders who can see or hear you.

You suspect another Raider is nearby

Use the Noisemaker before exposing yourself to a room, doorway, or crossing. The information can determine whether you proceed, wait, or change route; it does not provide an escape by itself.

You are defending a doorway

Use the Door Blocker if the entrance is eligible and controlling it improves your position. Pair the choice with a retreat route so the blocked door does not trap you.

You want a prepared crossing or escape line

Use a Zipline only where its placement requirements are satisfied. If the location is uncertain or the route changes constantly, the Grappling Hook may offer more flexibility, provided you can use it reliably.

You intentionally want to signal distress

Pick the Remote Raider Flare. Its purpose is communication through a manual distress signal, so activating it conflicts with a plan based on staying hidden.

How to acquire and prepare gadgets

The October 7 gadget guide identifies three acquisition routes:

  • Loot: Gadgets can be found while searching the world. Higher-rarity gadgets may appear in locked rooms or high-risk zones.
  • Crafting: Once the recipe is available, craft the item at the appropriate Utility Bench.
  • Traders: Buy gadgets from traders when the item is in stock. Trader inventories do not include every utility at all times.

Prices, recipes, rarity availability, and trader stock can rotate or change. Use the current item description and Utility Bench screen for exact requirements instead of relying on an old list. Before deployment, verify both that the gadget is actually in your inventory and that it is assigned to a Quick Use slot.

Troubleshooting gadget problems

The gadget is not on the wheel

Return to the loadout and assign it to a Quick Use slot. Carrying an item in general inventory is not the same as preparing it for quick activation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Holding Q does not open the wheel

Check the controls menu for the current Quick Use binding. The reported Q shortcut is a PC default and may not apply after remapping or on another platform.

The Grappling Hook will not attach

Move your aim to a different surface and look for a valid attachment indicator. The preview reported failed ledge grabs, ropes catching on geometry, and difficulty with some surfaces or large enemies. A nearby object may be too light, moving too quickly, or positioned so the rope wraps around geometry; the October 13 update addressed several of those cases but cannot make every object valid.

You finish a swing in a bad position

Use a walkable landing area as your target, not merely the nearest visible edge. The October 13 update made ending a swing on walkable ground more consistent, but narrow lips, clutter, and awkward angles can still leave you exposed. If the landing is deteriorating, look for a midair redeployment rather than forcing the original line.

The Photoelectric Cloak did not hide you from a Raider

That is expected behavior according to the current guide. The Cloak conceals you from ARC, not from other players, and its loud beep can reveal activity. Reassess whether machine detection or player detection is the actual threat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A placement gadget refuses the location

Read the on-screen prompt and try an eligible door or a location that meets the Zipline’s placement requirements. Door Blocker and Zipline are conditional tools; they are not usable on every surface or entrance.

Loadout decision checklist

Use this quick check immediately before deploying:

  • Identify the main failure you are trying to prevent: a fall, a machine sightline, an unseen Raider, an unsecured door, or a communication problem.
  • Choose the gadget whose primary job matches that failure.
  • Confirm the item’s current charges, usage bar, range, and placement text in the live game.
  • Assign it to a Quick Use slot and verify the wheel binding for your platform.
  • For movement tools, identify at least one valid attachment or placement point and one fallback route.
  • For concealment, decide whether ARC or another player is the detection threat.
  • For signaling tools, make sure attracting attention is intentional.

The Grappling Hook is the strongest general-purpose starting point when your route demands vertical movement and you are willing to practice. The Snap Hook, Photoelectric Cloak, Noisemaker, Door Blocker, Remote Raider Flare, and Zipline become better choices when their narrower jobs match the encounter. That is the practical meaning of “best” in ARC Raiders: the gadget that solves the next problem without creating a larger one.
