To find the cause of a bug, first make the failure repeatable, then use a test to capture the mismatch, logs to establish what happened, and a debugger to inspect where execution first diverges from expectations. Form a specific cause hypothesis, make a focused change, and rerun the same reproduction and relevant tests. These methods work together: tests expose a behavioral mismatch, while logs and a debugger help explain it.
How do I find the cause of a bug?
Start by recording the failure as an observable difference between expected and actual behavior. Apple’s guide to diagnosing and resolving bugs in a running app recommends developing steps that reliably reproduce the problem before setting breakpoints and inspecting state.

- Trigger: Write down the exact action, request, or input that causes the problem.
- Expected and observed results: State what should happen and what happens instead.
- Conditions: Note relevant runtime, configuration, data, and other environmental details.
- Repeatability: Record whether the failure occurs every time or intermittently.
If possible, reduce the reproduction to the smallest input or sequence that still fails. That gives you a stable target for a test or debugger session. An intermittent or timing-sensitive failure may not become deterministic immediately; retain its timing context rather than assuming a simplified reproduction captures it.
How do I debug a failing test?
A test makes a behavioral expectation concrete: given certain conditions, the result should match an assertion. When the test fails, it establishes that the observed behavior differs from that expectation. It usually does not identify the faulty state transition or line of code. Apple makes this distinction in its Xcode debugging guidance: unit tests determine whether code meets expectations, but do not explain why it does not.

It’s the perfect household essential and an ideal gift for husbands, dads, sons, or friends who love electronics repair and DIY projects.
- Inspect the failing assertion. Identify the expected value, actual value, and inputs used in the test.
- Run the test again. Confirm the failure is repeatable under the same conditions.
- Trace the relevant behavior. Follow the inputs through the code that produces the asserted result; use logs or a debugger where the test alone is not enough.
- Keep the case as a regression test where practical. After a fix, it can check that the discovered behavior remains correct.
Do not make writing a test a prerequisite for every investigation. For a production-only issue, integration failure, or timing-sensitive bug, a trace, crash details, logs, or a minimal reproducer may be the most practical starting point. Add a regression test when the condition is understood well enough and the system allows it.
How do I use logs to debug code?
Logs provide a record of selected events and values without requiring an interactive pause. Add observations at meaningful boundaries: for example, when a request enters a function, before a branch, or after a state update. Include enough context to compare a failing run with an expected one, such as an operation or request identifier and relevant state. Avoid logging indiscriminately; excessive output can obscure the event that matters.

In Visual Studio Code, a logpoint writes a message to the Debug Console without pausing execution and can include expressions. Its availability depends on the debugger extension. See Microsoft’s VS Code debugging documentation. Xcode also supports breakpoint actions that log values without pausing, as described in Apple’s debugging guidance.
Logs are evidence, not a complete record of execution. They show only what was recorded, and missing timestamps, correlation identifiers, or relevant values can make events difficult to interpret. Follow your project’s data-handling rules: do not expose secrets or personal data in production logs.

How do I use a debugger to find where a bug happens?
Set a breakpoint before the point where you suspect the state becomes incorrect, reproduce the problem, and inspect variables and the call stack. Look for the earliest point at which a value or branch no longer matches the code’s contract and the failing test’s expectation. Apple documents this workflow for Xcode, while the VS Code debugger guide describes inspecting variables, the call stack, and execution flow.
Use stepping to narrow the execution path
- Step into a function when its internal behavior may explain the result.
- Step over a function when its internals are not relevant and you want to continue at the current level.
- Step out to return from the current function to its caller.
These operations are common debugger concepts, but controls and support vary by tool. Microsoft Learn explains statement-level stepping and call-stack navigation for Visual Studio.

Use the call stack as a map, not a verdict
The call stack shows active calls. A crash location or top frame may be where bad state was detected, not where it originated. Inspect relevant callers, arguments, and state at function boundaries to trace how the value arrived. In Python, the standard-library pdb debugger documentation describes source-level stepping, stack-frame inspection, conditional breakpoints, and post-mortem debugging.

Which should I use: tests, logs, or a debugger?
| Method | What it reveals | Limits | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tests | Whether specified behavior meets an expectation; repeatable pass/fail evidence. | Usually do not expose the cause on their own; evidence is limited to encoded cases. | Reproducing and preserving a known failure. |
| Logs or logpoints | Selected events and values over time. | Show only recorded context; ordinary logs can add noise, and logpoint support varies by debugger. | Establishing sequence and state, especially when pausing is undesirable. |
| Interactive debugger | Live variables, execution point, call stack, and control flow. | Requires a suitable runtime and debugger setup; pauses can affect timing. | Narrowing the first unexpected state transition in a reproducible case. |
Choose the next observation based on the failure: whether it is deterministic, whether a test can capture it, what logs are available, and whether pausing could change its timing. The methods are complementary, not competing alternatives.
How do I test whether my cause hypothesis is right?
Describe the hypothesis as a causal chain, not just a suspected location: “When condition X occurs, function Y receives value Z, takes branch A, and produces the unexpected result.” Then make the smallest relevant change that would distinguish that explanation from plausible alternatives. Apple’s debugging guidance recommends applying a potential fix and retesting; if the issue remains, reconsider the suspected location and repeat the isolation steps.
After the change, rerun the original reproduction and relevant tests. Check that the failure is gone and intended behavior remains intact. A passing test is evidence only for the inputs and assertions it covers, not proof that every input or environment is correct. If the predicted effect does not occur, revise the hypothesis instead of treating the change as confirmation.

When can debugging make a bug harder to see?
Pausing can change execution timing, which matters for concurrent or timing-sensitive code. Apple notes that a debugging pause may alter the timing of concurrent code and make a timing-dependent issue disappear. For such cases, prefer non-pausing observations such as logs, VS Code logpoints where supported, or Xcode breakpoint actions that log and continue. Preserve timing context and avoid interpreting a failure that vanishes under a breakpoint as proof that the underlying issue is fixed.
