SUBE is a contactless fare system used on buses, trains, and subways in participating Argentine locations. Coverage is not universal, and official pages give inconsistent locality counts, so check whether your specific route accepts SUBE rather than relying on a national total. The government’s get and load SUBE page describes the participating services.

A physical card is the straightforward choice if you need to ride trains: the government’s SUBE Digital information lists buses, subways, and premetro, but does not list trains. For physical cards, follow the signs and instructions at the bus validator, station gates, or local operator. The reviewed official guidance does not establish one universal tap-in or tap-out procedure for every train and subway system.

You can obtain a physical card online or at an official Punto SUBE. The government’s card service page listed the card at ARS 1,500 when reviewed in 2026; treat that as a changeable listed price, not a guaranteed price at every sales point. The physical card does not require a smartphone.

Electronic top-ups are available through the SUBE app, home banking, virtual wallets, and ATMs. You can also load in person at a Centro de Atención or Punto SUBE. The government’s 22 July 2026 explainer on electronic loading describes these options.
Accredit an electronic top-up
For a physical card, an electronic payment may not become usable balance until you accredit it. Depending on what is available to you, use one of these methods:

- SUBE app: Use the app’s balance function with an NFC-compatible Android phone. The government’s July 2026 explainer specifies Android 6 or later for this accreditation method.
- Carga a Bordo: Ask whether the bus has a compatible validator and whether the service in that locality supports onboard accreditation. Availability is not universal.
- Terminal Automática SUBE: Hold the card at a terminal and follow its prompts to register the load.
The same July 2026 explainer states a maximum electronic load of ARS 30,000 per operation and a maximum physical-card balance of ARS 40,000. These figures are method- and date-sensitive; check the current instructions before relying on them. Other official SUBE guidance describes different constraints for terminal accreditation, so there is no single limit to apply to every loading method.

Registration is not presented as a requirement for ordinary card use. It can help you recover a balance if the card is lost or damaged, review trips and discounts, and access Tarifa Social Federal if you qualify. See the government’s SUBE registration instructions for online, phone, service-center, and app routes. Eligible social-fare applicants may need a PIN SUBE from Mi ANSES.

Use SUBE Digital on a compatible phone
SUBE Digital is separate from the physical card and requires a compatible Android phone and the app. The official page specifies Android 8 or later and describes payment by NFC or QR. Its listed transport modes are buses in SUBE localities, subways, and premetro—not trains.
- Set up SUBE Digital in the SUBE app and make sure its status is updated before you travel.
- On a bus, tell the driver your destination, then present the phone to the validator or QR reader as directed.
- At subway gates, present the phone with the screen on.
The official FAQ says an active internet connection is not required at the instant of payment, but the app status must be updated before travel. Where a phone payment is not supported by the service or device, use a physical card instead.

Fares vary by service and location; the available official guidance does not establish a single Argentina-wide fare. Balance limits and emergency-balance figures can also change and may depend on the loading or accreditation method.
