Use a stop-loss to exit a Bitcoin position when your trade thesis is invalidated and a take-profit to exit when your objective is reached. Set both before or immediately after entry, size the position so the stop represents an acceptable loss, and choose between stop-market (higher execution likelihood) and stop-limit (price control but possible non-execution). Always check the exchange’s trigger price, margin and liquidation rules: a stop is an instruction, not a guarantee against slippage or liquidation.
What stop-loss and take-profit orders do
A stop-loss is a conditional exit designed to limit downside. A take-profit (TP) is a conditional exit designed to lock in gains. You specify a trigger price and an execution method; when the trigger condition is met, the exchange submits the resulting market or limit order. The trigger itself is not necessarily the price at which you will be filled.

- Stop-loss: For a long position, it normally triggers below the entry price and sells. For a short position, it normally triggers above entry and buys to cover.
- Take-profit: For a long position, it normally triggers above entry and sells. For a short position, it normally triggers below entry and buys to cover.
- Market execution: Prioritizes getting a fill, with the final price determined by available liquidity.
- Limit execution: Sets a worst acceptable price, but the order can remain unfilled if Bitcoin moves through it.
These orders are useful because Bitcoin can move faster than a person can react. They do not remove risk: a fast move can produce a fill away from the trigger, and a leveraged position can be liquidated before the conditional order executes.
Plan the trade before placing either order
Write the thesis and invalidation level
State why you are entering and the price or market condition that proves the idea wrong. That invalidation level is the logical starting point for the stop. Do not pick a stop solely because a round percentage feels comfortable; a stop that sits inside normal market noise can trigger while the thesis remains intact, while a very wide stop can create an unacceptable loss.

Set a profit objective
Define the level at which the expected move has paid you enough relative to the risk. You can use one TP or several levels for scaling out. The official exchange material does not establish a universal Bitcoin stop distance or take-profit percentage, so the target must come from your setup, liquidity and risk plan rather than a standard number.
Convert account risk into position size
Choose the maximum amount you are willing to lose if the stop is filled, then size the position around the stop distance. A simple planning equation is:
position notional = planned account loss ÷ stop distance (as a decimal)

If entry is $60,000 and the invalidation stop is $57,000, the distance is 5%. A position notional of $2,000 makes a 5% move equal to about $100 before fees and slippage. This is a sizing illustration, not a recommended risk level or a prediction about Bitcoin.
For leveraged futures, include contract specifications, funding, trading fees, maintenance margin and a possible slippage buffer. The amount at risk can exceed the apparent entry-to-stop loss if the position is liquidated first or the market gaps through the trigger.
Stop-market versus stop-limit
The central choice is execution certainty versus price certainty.

| Setup | What happens at the trigger | Main advantage | Main failure mode | When it can fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stop-market | The exchange submits a market order. | More likely to execute during a fast move. | Fill can be materially worse than the stop price because of slippage or a gap. | When exiting is more important than controlling the exact fill price. |
| Stop-limit | The exchange submits a limit order with a limit price you set. | Controls the worst acceptable execution price. | Price can move past the limit and leave the position open. | When you accept non-execution risk and liquidity is sufficient. |
A stop-market combines a stop (trigger) price with a market order. In volatile, relatively illiquid cryptocurrency markets, the eventual fill can be significantly lower for a sell or higher for a buy than the stop price. A stop-limit protects against an unexpectedly bad price only by accepting that it might not fill at all.
Choosing a stop-limit offset
If you use a stop-limit order, the stop and limit must be placed in the correct direction for the exchange. A long-position sell stop-limit generally has a trigger above the limit (for example, trigger $57,000 and limit $56,800); a short-position buy stop-limit generally has a trigger below the limit (for example, trigger $63,000 and limit $63,200). The exact relationship and allowed offsets vary by platform, so read the instrument’s order rules before submitting. A very narrow offset raises the chance of no fill; a wider offset increases the possible loss.
Choose the trigger price: mark, last or index
Exchanges can activate a conditional order from different price references:
| Trigger reference | Meaning | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Last traded price | The price of the latest matched trade on that venue. | A single trade or a thin order book can trigger the order even when broader reference prices have not moved as far. |
| Mark price | An exchange-calculated fair-value reference, commonly used for derivatives risk and liquidation. | Can trigger at a different time from the last trade and may reduce sensitivity to an isolated print. |
| Index price | A reference calculated from one or more external spot markets. | May track the wider market rather than the quote on your trading venue. |
Names, formulas and available choices differ by exchange and instrument. Confirm the trigger setting in the order ticket and in the platform’s documentation. A stop based on last price can activate while mark or index remains above it; a mark- or index-triggered stop can activate without a trade at your displayed last price.
Step-by-step: placing a Bitcoin stop-loss and take-profit
- Identify the instrument. Confirm whether you are trading spot BTC, a margin product, a perpetual contract or a dated future. Contract size, settlement, leverage and liquidation rules are different.
- Record entry, invalidation and target. Write the entry plan, the stop trigger, the TP trigger and the quantity before clicking Submit.
- Calculate quantity from risk. Check the loss at the stop using the contract’s quote currency, then add room for fees and slippage. Reduce size if the result exceeds your allowed loss.
- Select the trigger source. Choose mark, index, last or the platform’s available alternative. Do not assume the exchange uses the price shown on the chart.
- Select execution type. Use stop-market when an exit is the priority. Use stop-limit only when you are prepared to manage an order that does not fill.
- Enable position controls when available. Select reduce-only or close-position for an exit order where supported. These settings help prevent an intended close from opening a reverse position, but their exact behavior is platform-specific.
- Enter the trigger and, for a stop-limit, the limit. Recheck the side: a long closes with a sell and a short closes with a buy. Verify that the trigger is on the intended side of the current price.
- Attach both exits if the platform offers a bracket. A bracket commonly pairs TP and SL with the parent entry. Confirm whether the untriggered leg is canceled automatically after one leg executes.
- Submit and verify. Look in the open-orders or conditional-orders panel, not only for a confirmation toast. Confirm quantity, trigger source, expiration, reduce-only status and the linked position.
- Recheck after fills. If the entry filled partially, verify the active TP/SL quantity. Some bracket systems activate exits only for the filled amount. If the position is later reduced manually, cancel or resize any independent protective order.
Brackets, partial fills and independent orders
An attached TP/SL bracket is convenient because the two exits are linked. In the common design, when one side executes, the exchange cancels the untriggered side. That cancellation is not universal: read the platform’s rules, especially for partial fills, multiple entries and position-hedging modes.

Keep the stop away from liquidation
Liquidation is an exchange-forced close when a leveraged position no longer meets its margin requirements. It can happen before your stop, particularly with high leverage, insufficient collateral, a stop close to the liquidation price or a trigger based on a different reference price.
- Display the estimated liquidation price before submitting the trade.
- Keep enough margin and collateral for the planned adverse move; do not rely on adding funds during a crash.
- Place the stop where the trade thesis fails, not at or beyond the liquidation threshold.
- Check whether liquidation uses mark price while your stop uses last or index price.
- Reduce leverage or position size if the distance from entry to liquidation is too small for normal volatility.
Exchange guidance warns that a stop beyond, or too close to, liquidation may not protect the position. A stop-loss cannot guarantee that liquidation will not occur.
What can go wrong in a volatile Bitcoin move
Gap and slippage
Bitcoin can move through a stop between order-book updates. A sell stop-market may fill below its trigger; a buy stop-market may fill above it. Thin liquidity, a sudden news event or a venue outage can widen the difference. Treat the trigger as an activation condition, not a guaranteed execution price.

Stop-limit remains unfilled
When price moves past the limit, the stop-limit becomes a resting limit order that may never trade. The position then remains exposed. If you choose stop-limit, define what you will do when it is still open: cancel and replace, reduce manually, or accept the exposure. Do not assume a visible order means the position is protected.
Liquidation happens first
A leveraged position can be closed by the risk engine before the conditional order reaches its trigger. This is more likely when leverage is high, margin is low or the stop is placed close to liquidation.
The conditional order is rejected
Common rejection causes include insufficient available funds or margin, a notional amount below or above the instrument’s limits, an invalid price increment, or an order that violates the platform’s distance rules. Check balances, contract quantity, tick size, minimum notional and trigger-distance requirements before retrying. Never assume a rejected stop is active.

The wrong price source is selected
Mark, index and last prices can activate at different times. During a brief exchange-specific spike, a last-price stop may trigger while the index does not. During a broader move, an index or mark trigger may activate before the last trade reaches the level shown on your chart.

The bracket quantity does not match the position
Partial entry fills can create smaller active exits than expected. A later manual increase can also leave the added quantity unprotected. Reconcile the position size with the quantities shown in the TP and SL orders after every fill.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to set a take-profit that matches the risk
Use a single target
A single TP is simplest: when the trigger is reached, the entire position exits. It reduces management decisions but can give back unrealized profit if the market reverses before the trigger or if a limit TP does not fill.
Scale out in portions
Multiple targets let you realize part of the gain at an earlier level and leave the remainder for a larger move. Each portion needs its own quantity and order-status check. After the first fill, consider whether the remaining stop should stay at the original invalidation level or be adjusted under a prewritten rule; avoid moving it impulsively.
Market versus limit take-profit
A take-profit market order prioritizes closing when the trigger is reached but can slip in a fast move. A take-profit limit controls price but may not fill if buyers or sellers disappear at the level. The same execution trade-off as a stop applies, even though the order is intended to close a profitable position.
Worked examples
Long spot or futures position
Suppose BTC is purchased at $60,000 because a support breakout is expected. The thesis is invalid below $57,000, and the objective is $66,000. The trader selects a sell stop-market triggered by the chosen reference at $57,000 and a sell take-profit at $66,000. If the venue supports a bracket, both orders are linked and the untriggered leg is expected to cancel after one executes, subject to the venue’s rules.
Best Value
If price falls rapidly from $57,100 to $56,600, the stop-market can fill around the available bids near $56,600 rather than $57,000. A stop-limit with a $56,800 limit might avoid a fill below that price, but it could remain open while BTC continues lower. The trader must decide which risk is unacceptable before entering.
Short perpetual position
Suppose a short is opened at $60,000, the invalidation is $63,000 and the target is $54,000. The protective stop is a buy order above the market and the TP is a buy order below it. The trader verifies that the stop’s trigger source matches the venue’s liquidation reference, checks the estimated liquidation price is beyond the planned stop, and uses reduce-only or close-position if offered. If the mark price jumps to $63,000 while the last trade lags, a mark-triggered stop can activate first.
Monitoring after entry
- Confirm status: Make sure both conditional orders show as open, with the intended quantity and trigger source.
- Watch margin: For derivatives, monitor maintenance margin, liquidation estimate and available collateral as the position changes.
- Check liquidity: A widening spread or thinning order book increases expected slippage and makes a stop-limit less likely to fill.
- Respect the plan: Do not move a stop farther away solely to avoid taking a loss. If the thesis changes, close or resize deliberately and update the linked orders.
- Audit after fills: Confirm the executed quantity, average price, remaining position and whether the opposite bracket leg was canceled.
- Cancel stale orders: Independent stops and targets can survive a manual close. Remove them so they cannot create a new position later.
Fees, limits and availability to check
Conditional orders are subject to the exchange and instrument’s fee schedule, minimum and maximum notional, price tick size, quantity step, margin mode and jurisdictional availability. A platform may offer mark-price triggers for perpetuals but only last-price triggers for spot, or impose a maximum distance between trigger and current price. Read the order ticket’s validation message and the product specification before relying on an order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFees and funding alter the realized result. A position that appears to meet a risk-to-reward target can produce a smaller net gain after entry and exit fees, funding payments and slippage. Include those costs in the amount you are willing to lose and in the TP calculation.
A practical pre-flight checklist
- Instrument and direction are correct.
- Entry, invalidation and objective are written down.
- Position size makes the planned stop loss acceptable.
- Stop and TP sides are correct for long or short.
- Trigger reference is explicitly selected and understood.
- Stop-market or stop-limit choice reflects your priority: execution or price control.
- Stop-limit offset is wide enough for the liquidity you expect, or you have accepted non-execution risk.
- Reduce-only or close-position is enabled where supported.
- Liquidation price is sufficiently beyond the stop, with adequate margin.
- Quantity, tick size, minimum notional and trigger-distance rules pass validation.
- Bracket behavior and partial-fill quantity are understood.
- Open-order status is verified after submission and after every fill.
Bottom line for volatile markets
Build the stop and take-profit from the trade’s invalidation and objective, then size the position so the stop represents a tolerable loss. Stop-market is generally the better fit when getting out matters most; stop-limit is appropriate only when you can accept that the position might not close. Select the trigger reference deliberately, keep the stop clear of liquidation, verify bracket quantities and cancel independent orders when the position is gone. In a gap or liquidity shock, no conditional order guarantees the trigger price or prevents liquidation.
