Stereo Mix lets Discord capture what your computer is playing—system audio—without routing cables or installing a full audio mixer. In 2024, it’s still one of the fastest ways to share game sound, music, or browser audio during calls.
This guide walks you through enabling Stereo Mix on Windows, selecting it inside Discord, tuning levels, and fixing the most common failure modes (no input, low volume, echo, and one-way audio). If Stereo Mix isn’t available on your machine, you’ll also get practical alternatives that work reliably.

What Stereo Mix Means in Discord (and when you actually need it)
Stereo Mix is a virtual recording device that captures the output audio from your speakers/headphones and exposes it as an input device. Discord then sends that input as the microphone source for your voice channel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou usually want Stereo Mix when you need to share system audio alongside your voice. If your goal is only to talk, use your real microphone. If your goal is to share a single app (like a game) with fewer issues, see the alternatives section—Windows app-specific sharing can be more stable.

Prerequisites for Using Stereo Mix on Windows
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 (Stereo Mix availability varies by audio driver).
- A sound card/audio driver that exposes Stereo Mix (many Realtek-based drivers do).
- Discord desktop app (Windows) or Discord in a browser—desktop usually behaves better for input device selection.
- Admin access isn’t required, but standard permissions can affect driver settings.
If you’re missing Stereo Mix entirely, don’t assume your OS is broken. Some manufacturers disable it or provide a different capture device name.
Step 1: Enable Stereo Mix in Windows
First, you need to expose Stereo Mix as a selectable recording device.
Windows 11 / Windows 10 (classic Sound panel)
- Right-click the Sound (speaker) icon in the system tray.
- Select Sound settings.
- Click More sound settings (opens the old Sound Control Panel).
- Go to the Recording tab.
- Right-click in empty space and enable Show Disabled Devices.
- Right-click the device named Stereo Mix (or similarly named “Stereo Mix,” “What U Hear,” “Mix,” “Wave Out Mix”).
- Choose Enable.
- Right-click again → Set as Default Device (recommended for testing).
Also check the device Levels
- In the Recording tab, open Stereo Mix properties.
- On the Levels tab, set volume to 80–100.
- Click OK.
Step 2: Confirm Stereo Mix works before Discord
Don’t skip this. If Stereo Mix isn’t capturing audio, Discord can’t fix that.
- With Stereo Mix enabled, open Sound Control Panel → Recording.
- Right-click Stereo Mix → Properties.
- On the Listen tab, enable Listen to this device (optional but helpful).
- Set playback to your speakers/headphones and click Apply.
- Start playing audio (YouTube, Spotify, a game).
- If you hear it and the input meter moves (in Windows recording indicators), Stereo Mix is working.
If you don’t see any meter movement, revisit the driver settings (or use alternatives below).
Step 3: Select Stereo Mix as the input device in Discord
Now route Stereo Mix into Discord.
Discord desktop (Windows)
- Open Discord → click your User Settings (gear icon).
- Go to Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, choose Stereo Mix.
- Speak or play audio and watch the Input Sensitivity meter.
- Choose your preferred mode: Voice Activity or Push to Talk.
Discord in browser (if needed)
Browser Discord can be picky about device permissions. Use the browser’s site permissions to allow audio capture for Discord, then re-check Input Device in Voice settings.
Step 4: Pick the right Discord audio mode (Push to Talk vs Voice Activity)
This choice affects both reliability and sound quality.
Voice Activity
Voice Activity triggers automatically when the input meter crosses your threshold. When Stereo Mix is noisy (fan hiss, system sounds), it can accidentally broadcast.
Push to Talk
Push to Talk is often the most stable for system audio. In Discord:

- In Voice & Video, select Push to Talk.
- Assign a shortcut key in Keybinds.
- Set it to a key you can hit consistently while playing content.
Step 5: Tune levels to avoid muffled audio or clipping
Stereo Mix works best when you balance Windows recording level and Discord input sensitivity.
Windows level targets
- Set Stereo Mix Levels to 80–100 initially.
- If your Discord meter clips constantly, reduce Stereo Mix level by 10–20 points.
Discord sensitivity targets
- In Voice & Video, watch the input meter.
- Drag Input Sensitivity so it triggers when audio plays, not when silence is present.
- Do a 10–20 second test with real content (not a muted YouTube tab).
Noise suppression and automatic gain
If available on your Discord version, try toggling Noise Suppression and Automatic Gain Control. Too much processing can muffle music. If you’re sharing audio, consider turning these off and controlling levels manually.
Common problems and fixes (Discord can’t hear Stereo Mix)
Here are the most frequent failure points and the fastest checks.

- Go back to Windows Sound → Recording and ensure Stereo Mix is Enabled.
- Confirm you enabled Show Disabled Devices.
- Restart Discord after enabling the device.
Problem: Input meter doesn’t move when you play audio
- Verify Stereo Mix works in Windows by checking the Listen feature.
- Lower Windows system output volume isn’t usually necessary, but try a clean test source (open a new YouTube tab).
- In Windows, set Stereo Mix Levels around 80–100.
- If the device is “Stereo Mix (Realtek…)” ensure that exact one is selected in Discord.
Problem: People hear audio but it’s quiet
- Increase Discord Input Sensitivity and Windows Stereo Mix level.
- Reduce Discord processing (noise suppression/AGC) if it’s overly compressing.
Problem: Audio stutters or delays
- Lower system audio effects (spatial audio, heavy EQ, third-party audio plugins) that add latency.
- Try Discord’s Voice Settings and ensure you’re not using an experimental audio mode.
Problem: Discord hears the microphone but not Stereo Mix
Discord can only take one input device at a time unless you use advanced virtual devices. If you set Input Device to Stereo Mix, the real microphone won’t be used for voice. Use one of the alternatives in the next section if you need both voice + system audio in one feed.
Echo, feedback, and doubled audio: how to stop it
Echo is almost always feedback between your playback device and the capture path.
Fixes that usually work
- In Discord, reduce Speaker volume while testing. If the meter triggers on your own voice playback, it can loop.
- Disable Listen to this device in Windows once you finish testing.
- If your audio device supports it, pick a headsets-only output device so you’re not feeding system sound into the microphone path.
- Use Push to Talk while you test for echo.
If echo persists, it’s often a sign you’re capturing from a device that includes your own microphone/monitor mix. Virtual routing tools (like Voicemeeter) or app-specific capture alternatives can help.
Special cases and gotchas
Some drivers rename Stereo Mix
On Realtek and other OEM drivers, you may see names like “What U Hear,” “Stereo Mix,” or “Wave Out Mix.” If Discord doesn’t list Stereo Mix exactly, check the recording devices list in Windows.
HDMI audio can confuse the device list
If you’re using a monitor with HDMI audio, the capture device might be tied to the HDMI output. You may need to enable Stereo Mix on the correct audio device instance (not the default one).

Windows privacy and app permissions
If you recently changed privacy settings, Windows can block recording devices for apps. Confirm microphone/audio permissions for Discord in Windows Privacy settings.
Discord output and input are separate
Stereo Mix solves system audio capture, not Discord’s listening. Your friends still hear what Discord sends. If their audio sounds right but your meter looks wrong, you’re dealing with Discord input configuration—not remote playback.
Alternatives when Stereo Mix is missing
If Stereo Mix doesn’t exist on your PC (common on some laptops, USB headsets, and newer OEM audio stacks), you still have options that work in 2024. Pick based on what you need: reliability, app-only capture, or combining voice + system audio.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Voicemeeter (virtual mixer for voice + system audio)
Voicemeeter-style setups let you combine microphone input and system audio into one virtual device. It’s heavier than Stereo Mix but often the most flexible for full routing.
- Install Voicemeeter.
- Configure system audio (your “WDM/Windows audio” input) into the mixer.
- Add your microphone as another input channel.
- In Discord Voice & Video → Input Device, select the virtual output (often named Voicemeeter Output or similar).
- Test with a short call recording.
Virtual audio cables (VB-Audio Cable / similar)
Virtual cable tools can capture Windows output into an input device Discord can use. They’re simpler than full mixers if you only need system audio capture.
- Install a virtual cable package (e.g., VB-Audio Cable).
- Route Windows sound output to the cable output.
- Select the corresponding cable device in Discord as Input Device.
- Adjust Windows cable volume so Discord’s meter moves but doesn’t clip.
Windows app sharing (when available)
If your Discord usage is primarily for streaming content, app sharing can be more reliable than audio capture. Discord can transmit the selected application’s video/audio without needing Stereo Mix, depending on your client setup and permissions.
- Open Discord → a voice channel.
- Select Share Your Screen.
- Choose the Application Window you want.
- Enable the option to include system audio (wording varies by client version).
macOS alternative (no Stereo Mix equivalent)
macOS doesn’t provide a native “Stereo Mix” equivalent. Use an audio router like BlackHole (commonly used) or similar virtual audio devices, then select the virtual device in Discord.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Install a virtual audio device (for example BlackHole).
- Route system audio output to the virtual device using macOS Audio MIDI Setup (or the app’s instructions).
- In Discord → Voice & Video → set Input Device to the virtual device.
Platform-specific notes (Windows vs macOS vs Linux)
Windows
Most people should use the Windows Sound Control Panel approach to enable Stereo Mix. Windows audio drivers vary a lot, so treat device naming as the only “variable.”

FAQs
Why don’t I see Stereo Mix in Windows?
Most often, your audio driver doesn’t expose it, or it’s disabled and hidden. In Windows, enable Show Disabled Devices and look for alternate names like What U Hear. If nothing resembles it, you’ll need a virtual cable/mixer or app sharing.
Can I use Stereo Mix and my microphone at the same time?
Not with Stereo Mix alone, because Discord picks a single Input Device. To combine voice + system audio, you generally need a virtual mixer/cable setup (e.g., Voicemeeter-style routing) or screen/app sharing.
My friends hear crackling or it sounds robotic. What should I try?
Lower Windows Stereo Mix recording level and adjust Discord sensitivity so the signal isn’t constantly saturating. Also disable heavy audio effects and try a different test source (clean audio like a local media player).
Will Stereo Mix work with every Discord call?
It should work on voice channels where Discord captures your selected input device. If you’re using browser Discord, input device permissions can block capture—desktop Discord tends to be more consistent.

Is Stereo Mix the best way to share game audio?
It’s fast when it exists, but app-specific sharing or virtual routing can be more reliable—especially when you want to avoid echo, reduce noise broadcast, or combine mic + system audio.
Bottom Line
To use Stereo Mix in Discord in 2024, enable it in Windows, verify it captures audio in the Sound panel, then select it under Discord → Voice & Video as your Input Device. After that, fine-tune sensitivity or use Push to Talk to keep your audio clean and under control.
If Stereo Mix is missing or buggy on your setup, don’t fight the driver—use virtual audio routing or app/screen sharing for a more dependable system-audio experience.
