Connect your controller, confirm Steam detects it under Settings > Controller, then configure the demo from its own Library entry. In desktop Steam, right-click the demo and choose Edit Steam Controller Configuration…. In Big Picture mode, open the game menu and select Manage Game > Controller Configuration. Choose the actions or inputs the demo exposes, save the layout, launch the demo, and test it in menus and gameplay.

Steam’s global controller support and a game’s per-title layout are separate. The available actions depend on whether the demo uses native Steam Input integration or only accepts gamepad, keyboard, or mouse signals through a legacy configuration.

What Steam’s controller settings actually change

Steam has two layers of controller configuration:

  • Global controller settings: These tell Steam which controller families to recognize and configure. They are found in the desktop client under Steam > Settings > Controller. Big Picture mode has its own Controller Settings route.
  • Per-game settings: These define what each physical button, stick, trigger, gyro, or trackpad does when a particular demo is running. A layout saved for one title does not automatically become the layout for another.

The global screen also includes categories such as Big Picture controls, Desktop controls, and Guide Button Chord controls. Those affect Steam navigation or system-wide shortcuts; they are not the same thing as the demo’s gameplay layout.

Steam’s player documentation says, “All detected controllers compatible with the configurator will show up on this screen.” If your controller is not listed, fix detection before trying to edit a demo’s bindings.

Controllers Steam can configure

Steam lists support for several controller families, including PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Pro, and generic DirectInput gamepads. A listed family is not a guarantee that every individual device or every demo will behave identically. USB, Bluetooth, wireless receivers, protocol modes, firmware, and the game’s own input handling can all affect the result.

Controller or input family What Steam documentation establishes What you still need to verify
PlayStation 4 Available as a controller-support category in Steam’s configurator. Whether the demo displays PlayStation prompts and whether every button is recognized as expected.
Xbox 360 and Xbox One Available controller-support categories in Steam’s configurator. Whether the demo expects XInput and whether its prompts match the physical labels.
Nintendo Switch Pro Listed among supported controller families. Button-label orientation and the demo’s handling of the controller’s protocol.
DirectInput gamepad Generic DirectInput devices are supported by the configurator. Which axes and buttons the device exposes, plus whether the demo accepts the resulting virtual inputs.

Step 1: Connect and identify the controller

  1. Connect the device. Plug it in by USB or pair it over Bluetooth or its receiver. Turn it on and confirm that its status light or other power indicator shows it is active.
  2. Open the desktop controller screen. In Steam, choose Steam > Settings > Controller. In Big Picture mode, open the corresponding Controller Settings page.
  3. Enable the relevant support category. Select the configuration support that matches your hardware, such as PlayStation 4, Xbox, or generic controller support. Steam will show compatible detected controllers on this screen.
  4. Keep the controller connected. Steam’s player guide notes that the per-game edit option may not appear when no controller is connected. Leave the device powered on while opening the demo’s configuration.

If the controller does not appear, reconnect it, try another USB port or Bluetooth pairing, and reopen the Controller settings page. A device that is powered but absent from Steam has not reached the point where per-game binding changes can help.

Step 2: Open the demo’s per-game configuration

Use the route that matches your Steam interface. Steam’s labels and screenshots can change between client builds, operating systems, and modes, so look for the closest current equivalent if the wording differs slightly.

Steam interface Route Important condition
Desktop client Open Library, find the demo, right-click its entry, and choose Edit Steam Controller Configuration… The edit command may be unavailable when Steam has no connected controller.
Big Picture mode Open the demo’s game menu, choose Manage Game, then Controller Configuration The demo must be selected as the active game and the controller must be detected.

Make sure you select the demo rather than the full game or a shortcut to another executable. Demos can have different action definitions, launchers, and input behavior from their related full releases.

Step 3: Determine whether the demo uses native Steam Input

The configurator behaves differently depending on the demo’s integration.

Native Steam Input actions

A demo with native Steam Input support exposes developer-defined actions. Instead of seeing only physical buttons, you may see names such as move, jump, interact, confirm, cancel, pause, or camera control. The developer can also define separate action sets for contexts such as menus, gameplay, vehicles, or inventory screens. Each set can have independent bindings.

Read the action names before assigning controls. Map the action the game requests to the physical input that feels natural, rather than assuming that every demo uses the same button convention. If the configurator offers a menu action set and a gameplay action set, inspect both; changing one does not necessarily change the other.

Legacy configurations

A demo without native actions can use Steam’s legacy mode. In that mode, Steam maps physical controls to signals the game already understands, including XInput gamepad controls, keyboard keys, and mouse movement or clicks.

Legacy mapping can make a controller usable when a demo has incomplete controller support, but it is an input translation layer, not a promise of full compatibility. A keyboard key assigned to a controller button may work in gameplay yet fail in a text field, launcher, or pause menu. Test every important screen in the demo.

Step 4: Build a comfortable layout

Start with the actions you use most often, then handle menus and special cases. A practical order is:

  1. Movement: Assign the left stick or directional controls to movement. Check the response at slow and full deflection.
  2. Camera or cursor: Use the right stick for camera movement when the demo supports joystick aiming. For a mouse-driven camera or cursor, a legacy mouse mapping may be necessary.
  3. Primary actions: Bind jump, attack, interact, or the demo’s equivalent to buttons that are easy to reach without releasing movement.
  4. Confirm and cancel: Assign both menu actions and verify which one backs out, pauses, or accepts a selection.
  5. Triggers and bumpers: Place aiming, braking, secondary actions, or cycling controls where gradual trigger input is useful.
  6. Stick clicks and paddles: Use these only for actions you can activate reliably. Accidental clicks are common when a stick press is required during movement.
  7. Gyro or trackpad: On hardware that provides them, reserve motion or trackpad input for fine camera or cursor adjustments if the demo benefits from precision.

When a native action set is available, bind the named action rather than simulating a keyboard shortcut. When only legacy inputs are available, write down which keyboard, mouse, or gamepad signal each physical control sends. That makes troubleshooting much easier.

Step 5: Launch the demo and test the actual game

Do not judge a layout from the configurator preview alone. Start the demo and run a short, deliberate test.

  • Move in every direction and check for drift, delayed response, or an unexpectedly small dead zone.
  • Open and close the main menu, settings, inventory, map, and pause screens if the demo includes them.
  • Test confirm, cancel, tab or page navigation, and any radial or list-based menu.
  • Use every action required by the opening section, including the demo’s most important combat, interaction, camera, or vehicle controls.
  • Visit a text-entry screen, such as a profile name or save label, if one exists.
  • Watch for prompts switching between controller symbols and keyboard-and-mouse instructions.
  • Move the mouse or touchpad, if present, while using the controller to identify conflicts caused by simultaneous input.

If a control works in the title screen but not in gameplay, the demo may be switching action sets or reading a different input mode. If the camera moves whenever you touch the mouse, the game may be reacting to mixed input rather than to a bad stick binding. Steam’s configurator cannot rewrite game-side prompts, focus rules, or every input conflict.

Why you may not be able to edit the layout

The controller is not connected

This is the first condition to check. Steam’s player instructions specifically note that the per-game edit option may not be available without a connected controller. Return to Settings > Controller, confirm detection, and reopen the demo’s Library menu.

You opened the wrong Steam menu

Desktop global settings and per-game settings are different. The global Controller page configures recognition and Steam-wide controls; the demo’s layout is opened from the demo’s Library entry. In Big Picture mode, use the game menu’s Manage Game > Controller Configuration path.

The demo exposes few or no editable actions

Native Steam Input depends on what the developer defined. A demo may expose only a small action set, or it may rely on legacy mapping. You can assign available actions and translated inputs, but you cannot invent game functions that the executable never handles.

The device uses an unexpected protocol

A controller may be physically functional but present itself differently over Bluetooth, USB, or a receiver. Steam can list a family as supported while a particular mode exposes unusual button or axis names. Try the connection mode recommended by the device manufacturer, then confirm the detected inputs in Steam before editing.

The game changes prompts or ignores simultaneous inputs

These symptoms usually point to game behavior rather than an unassigned button. Test with only the controller connected, then test mouse and controller together if the demo requires both. A layout can send correct signals while the game still chooses one prompt style or gives focus to the wrong device.

Native actions versus legacy mapping: which should you choose?

Decision point Native Steam Input Legacy mapping
What you assign Developer-defined game actions. Physical controls translated to gamepad, keyboard, or mouse signals.
Best starting point Use when the demo presents clear actions or multiple action sets. Use when the demo lacks native actions or has limited controller support.
Menu handling Can provide separate menu and gameplay bindings when the developer defined them. May require separate keyboard or mouse assignments and manual testing in every screen.
Main risk An action may be missing or defined differently from what you expect. A translated input may conflict with text entry, prompts, focus, or mixed mouse input.

There is no universally best layout in Steam’s official documentation. Choose based on the demo’s actions, the controls your hardware offers, and whether the same assignment works in both menus and gameplay.

Using Steam Deck controls with a demo

Steam Deck supports XInput, Raw Input, DirectInput, and Steam Input. Its gyro and trackpads can provide finer camera or cursor control in games that respond well to motion or mouse-style input. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ describes gyro combined with a joystick or trackpad as a way to refine aiming or cursor movement, while developers can publish traditional and motion-oriented configurations.

For a player, treat gyro and trackpad controls as optional precision tools:

  1. First establish a reliable traditional layout with sticks and buttons.
  2. Add gyro or trackpad input only for camera or cursor work that feels imprecise on a stick.
  3. Test whether motion activates unintentionally while holding the Deck in a normal grip.
  4. Compare the demo’s menus and gameplay separately; a trackpad that is excellent for a cursor may be awkward for menu navigation.

Valve’s Deck recommendations ask developers to make all game functionality accessible with default controls, provide automatic on-screen keyboard behavior when text entry is needed, and support mixed mouse-style and joystick-style camera movement where appropriate. Those are developer targets, not a guarantee that player remapping can repair missing game support. If the demo never exposes a required action or mishandles text input, the configurator may not be able to solve it.

A repeatable workflow for every new indie demo

  1. Connect and power the controller before launching the demo.
  2. Check Steam > Settings > Controller and confirm that Steam lists the device.
  3. Open the demo’s Library entry, not a different edition or shortcut.
  4. Open Edit Steam Controller Configuration… on desktop, or Manage Game > Controller Configuration in Big Picture mode.
  5. Identify native actions and action sets; if they are absent, identify whether legacy gamepad, keyboard, or mouse mapping is appropriate.
  6. Assign movement, camera, primary actions, menu navigation, and text-entry controls.
  7. Launch the demo and test menus, gameplay, prompts, and any text field.
  8. Adjust only the controls that failed, then retest the affected screen rather than changing the entire layout at once.

This process separates detection problems from configuration problems and configuration problems from bugs or limitations inside the demo itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Steam Input cannot guarantee

Steam’s documentation describes the supported workflow and controller categories, but it does not establish identical menus on every operating system, controller, Steam client build, or demo. A demo can have incomplete native actions, unusual protocol handling, missing text-entry support, or game-side conflicts between mouse and controller input.

Use the configurator to expose the inputs the demo already understands, translate controls when legacy mode is appropriate, and create a layout that is comfortable in the screens you actually use. The final test must happen inside the demo, because only the running game can confirm whether its menus, prompts, action sets, and gameplay systems respond correctly.
