How to Use Stage Manager and Multitasking on the 13-inch iPad Air

Stage Manager is the quickest way to keep a project’s apps together on a 13-inch iPad Air. Turn it on at Settings > Multitasking & Gestures > Stage Manager, or open Control Center and tap the Stage Manager control. Your current app or app group stays in front while other open apps appear in a recent-apps strip. For freely arranged, independently resized windows, choose Windowed Apps instead.

This guide covers both modes, grouping and switching apps, window controls, external displays, model compatibility and fixes for the most common problems. Apple’s current iPadOS 26 support article explicitly lists the 13-inch iPad Air with M2 and M3 chips for Stage Manager and for moving windows to an external display; it does not list the 13-inch M4 Air, so M4 owners should verify the latest compatibility list before relying on extended Stage Manager.

What Stage Manager does on the 13-inch iPad Air

Stage Manager treats your active app, or a group of apps, as a workspace. That workspace occupies the main area of the screen. Other open apps and groups are kept in a recent-apps list along the left side, so you can change tasks without returning to the Home Screen. Apple describes the feature as a way to resize windows, see multiple overlapping windows in one view and switch apps with a tap (Apple Support: Turn Stage Manager on or off on your iPad).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 13-inch display gives the windows more room than an 11-inch iPad, but Stage Manager is still a window-management system rather than a guarantee that every app will behave like a desktop application. An app must support the windows you want to use, and some apps may continue to present a constrained or full-screen interface.

Stage Manager versus Windowed Apps

iPadOS presents Stage Manager and Windowed Apps as separate multitasking modes under Multitasking & Gestures. Stage Manager emphasizes task groups and a persistent recent-apps area. Windowed Apps emphasizes individual windows that you can place and resize yourself. Select one according to how you work; they are not two names for the same mode.

Choose this mode Best for How organization works Window adjustment
Stage Manager A project that uses a repeatable set of apps, such as a document, browser and notes Current app or group in front; other apps and groups in the left recent-apps list Resize and overlap windows inside the active workspace; drag windows into or out of groups
Windowed Apps Several independent windows arranged around the screen Open another app from the Dock, Home Screen or App Library and place it beside existing windows Drag the lower-right handle to resize and drag the top of a window to move it
Full Screen Apps One app at a time with no window-management layer Use the Dock, App Switcher or Home Screen to change apps The app controls its full-screen layout

Check compatibility before you start

Apple’s iPadOS 26 Stage Manager support article explicitly names the 13-inch iPad Air (M2) and 13-inch iPad Air (M3). The same article’s list for moving apps and windows to an external display also names those two models (Apple’s compatibility list). The retrieved list does not name the 13-inch iPad Air with an M4 chip. That omission is not proof that the feature can never work on an M4, but it means you should check Apple’s current list for your exact model and installed iPadOS before promising external Stage Manager windows.

Do not confuse display output with extended Stage Manager. Apple’s USB-C documentation discusses display connections for iPad Air models, while Stage Manager window movement has its own eligibility list (Charge and connect with the USB-C port on your iPad).

  • Open Settings > General > About and note the model name and chip generation.
  • Install the latest iPadOS version offered for that iPad before troubleshooting missing multitasking options.
  • If you use an external monitor, identify whether its input is USB-C, DisplayPort or HDMI and obtain the appropriate cable or adapter.
  • Keep in mind that individual apps may implement window support differently.

How to turn on Stage Manager

Enable it in Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Multitasking & Gestures.
  3. Select Stage Manager.

The menu may show Full Screen Apps, Stage Manager and Windowed Apps. Choose the mode you want. Apple notes that labels can change between iPadOS releases, so the options on your iPad take precedence over an older screenshot or instruction.

Switch from Control Center

  1. Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
  2. Tap the Stage Manager button to enable it or return to it.
  3. Touch and hold the Stage Manager button, or the Windowed Apps button when shown, to switch between those two windowed modes.

To stop using Stage Manager, return to Control Center or Multitasking & Gestures and choose Full Screen Apps (or Off where that label appears). Choose Windowed Apps if you want to keep a window-based workflow without Stage Manager’s recent-apps strip.

Use the recent-apps list to switch tasks

When Stage Manager is active, the app or app group you are using moves into the foreground. Other open apps and groups appear as recent items along the left side. Tap an item to bring it forward. You can also tap an app in the Dock to open or switch to it.

For a gesture-based view, swipe up from the bottom edge and pause to expose recent apps and groups. The exact gesture can depend on your iPad’s navigation settings, but the goal is the same: pause after swiping so the recent-apps view appears rather than simply returning Home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Show or hide the recent-apps strip

Go to Settings > Multitasking & Gestures and use the Stage Manager checkbox that controls recent apps. Hiding the strip gives the active workspace more room; showing it makes task switching visible. If the strip seems to vanish because a window is positioned close to it, swipe inward from the left edge to make it reappear, as described in Apple’s iPad User Guide (Organize windows with Stage Manager on iPad).

Create and manage a Stage Manager app group

A group is useful when the same apps belong to one task. A writing group might contain a document editor, a browser and a notes app. A travel group could contain a booking app, maps and messages. The group remains available as one item in the recent-apps list.

Add an app from recent apps

  1. With Stage Manager running, locate the app or window in the left recent-apps list.
  2. Drag that window toward the center of the screen.
  3. Release it beside or over the app already in the workspace.

Add an app from the Dock

  1. Swipe up slightly from the bottom edge if the Dock is not visible.
  2. Touch and drag the app icon from the Dock into the center workspace.
  3. Release it when the window outline is in the position you want.

The app must support the window arrangement you are attempting. If it opens full screen or refuses to join the group, use the app’s own current iPad interface or try another app; Stage Manager cannot add window behavior an app does not provide.

Remove a window from a group

Drag the window toward the left edge and into the recent-apps area. Apple also notes that minimizing a window in a group removes it from that group and returns it to recent apps. The rest of the group stays intact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Arrange windows inside Stage Manager

Stage Manager allows overlapping windows in the active workspace. Drag a window by its top area to reposition it when the app exposes that behavior, and use the window’s resize affordance to give one app more space than another. Keep the most important window in front and leave supporting apps partially visible when you need quick reference.

This iPhone 16 HDMI adapter is so easy to use, even the olders can use it, easily set up and enjoy large and clear screen displaying anywhere anytime

A practical three-app layout

  1. Open the primary document or creative app and leave it as the largest window.
  2. Drag a browser from the Dock into the workspace and place it to one side for research.
  3. Add Notes or another reference app, then resize it so only the needed section is visible.
  4. Tap the document window when you need uninterrupted typing; tap a partially visible window to bring it forward.

This arrangement is a personal workflow choice, not a measured performance advantage. If the overlapping layout feels crowded, move one app back to recent apps and bring it forward only when needed.

How to use Windowed Apps instead

Windowed Apps is the alternative when you want multiple freely placed windows without Stage Manager’s grouped recent-apps presentation. Enable it at Settings > Multitasking & Gestures > Windowed Apps.

Open and resize a window

  1. Open an app from the Dock, Home Screen or App Library.
  2. Find the window’s lower-right resize handle.
  3. Drag the handle inward to make the window smaller or outward to enlarge it.
  4. Drag from the top of the window to move it around the screen.

The upper-left window controls let you close, minimize or return the window to full screen. Touch and hold those controls to expose additional options. Double-tap a window’s top edge to return it to full screen, or use its full-screen control.

Add another app

  1. Tap an app in the Dock or App Library, or swipe up from the bottom edge to reveal the Home Screen.
  2. Open the second app.
  3. If it opens full screen, resize it with the lower-right handle and position it beside the first window.

Apple summarizes the underlying capability this way: “On iPad you can work with multiple apps, or multiple windows of the same app” (Work with multiple windows at the same time on iPad). Whether a particular app can open several documents or windows still depends on that app.

Connect the 13-inch iPad Air to an external display

The iPad Air uses USB-C for display connections. A USB-C monitor can connect directly with a suitable USB-C cable. For an HDMI monitor or television, use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter; the adapter is conditional on the display’s input and is not required to use Stage Manager on the iPad’s own screen. Apple also documents DisplayPort over USB-C, supported resolutions and the use of hubs or docks in its USB-C guide (Charge and connect with the USB-C port on your iPad).

Basic connection procedure

  1. Check the monitor’s input and select a compatible USB-C, DisplayPort or HDMI cable and adapter.
  2. Connect the cable or adapter to the iPad’s USB-C port and the display.
  3. Switch the monitor to the connected input.
  4. Unlock the iPad and wait for the display to be detected.
  5. If your model is eligible, turn on Stage Manager and drag an app or window toward the external display to move it there.

Some USB-C displays can charge the iPad while connected. High-resolution displays may require a high-bandwidth USB-C cable. Apple lists up to 6K at 60Hz for one external display in its USB-C support material for groups of iPad Air models, but the separate technical-specification page opened for the 11-inch iPad Air (M4) is the source for that model-specific figure (iPad Air 11-inch (M4) technical specifications). Do not apply the 11-inch M4 specification to the 13-inch Air without checking the 13-inch model’s own specification page.

External-display limits to keep straight

  • Apple explicitly lists the 13-inch M2 and M3 iPad Air for moving apps and windows to an external display in the retrieved iPadOS 26 support article.
  • The USB-C port’s ability to send a video signal does not by itself establish extended Stage Manager support.
  • The retrieved compatibility list omits the 13-inch M4 Air. Verify Apple’s current list for that model before buying accessories or planning a desktop-style setup.
  • An HDMI adapter may be necessary for an HDMI-only monitor, but it does not add Stage Manager compatibility to an unsupported iPad.

Troubleshoot common Stage Manager and multitasking problems

Stage Manager is not listed

  • Confirm the exact iPad model in Settings > General > About.
  • Update iPadOS, then revisit Settings > Multitasking & Gestures.
  • Check that you are looking for Stage Manager, not the separate Windowed Apps option.
  • If you have a 13-inch M4 Air, do not assume that display output means Stage Manager window movement is supported; consult Apple’s current model list.

The recent-apps list disappeared

Use the Stage Manager recent-apps checkbox in Settings > Multitasking & Gestures to show it again. If a window is covering or sitting beside the strip, swipe inward from the left edge. You can still switch through the Dock while the list is hidden.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A window will not join a group

Drag the app window from the recent-apps list or drag its Dock icon into the center workspace, rather than merely tapping it. If the app insists on full screen, its current iPad implementation may not support the desired arrangement. Return the window to recent apps and try a different app to determine whether the problem is app-specific.

The resize handle or window controls are missing

Make sure you selected Windowed Apps if you are following that mode’s instructions. In Windowed Apps, the resize handle is at the lower-right corner and controls are at the upper-left. Stage Manager uses its own window arrangement and may not expose exactly the same controls in the same places.

The monitor shows no picture

  • Confirm the monitor is set to the correct input.
  • Reseat both ends of the cable and test a cable rated for the display’s resolution.
  • For HDMI, verify that the USB-C-to-HDMI adapter supports the required signal.
  • If the monitor can charge the iPad, charging alone does not prove that video is passing through; check the adapter and cable’s display specifications.
  • Recheck model eligibility for external Stage Manager windows separately from basic USB-C video output.

The display works but windows cannot move to it

Basic mirroring or video output can work on a model that is not listed for extended Stage Manager window movement. Check Apple’s current Stage Manager compatibility list, confirm Stage Manager is enabled, and verify that the exact 13-inch Air generation is supported. The retrieved iPadOS 26 list names M2 and M3 13-inch Air models and does not name M4.

Choose the right workflow

Your goal Recommended setting Reason
Keep a known set of apps together for writing, study or planning Stage Manager Groups become one recent-apps item and stay available as a task context
See several independent windows and place each precisely Windowed Apps Each window can be resized from its lower-right handle and moved by its top edge
Use one app without visual clutter Full Screen Apps No Stage Manager or windowed workspace occupies the interface
Use a second monitor for app windows Stage Manager on a confirmed eligible model Apple’s external-window list is narrower than general USB-C display connectivity

The 13-inch iPad Air is large enough to make either windowed mode practical, but the best choice depends on whether you think in task groups or in individual windows. Start with Stage Manager if you regularly return to the same combination of apps. Choose Windowed Apps if you want to lay out windows manually each time. Keep Full Screen Apps available for reading, gaming or any app that is easier to use without window controls.

Key points to remember

  • Turn on Stage Manager at Settings > Multitasking & Gestures > Stage Manager, or switch to it from Control Center.
  • Tap recent-apps items or Dock icons to switch, and drag windows or Dock icons into the center to build a group.
  • Drag a window left, or minimize it, to return it to recent apps.
  • Windowed Apps is a separate mode with a lower-right resize handle, top-edge movement and upper-left controls.
  • For external displays, match the cable or adapter to the monitor’s input and verify Stage Manager eligibility for the exact iPad model.
  • Apple’s retrieved iPadOS 26 list explicitly confirms 13-inch M2 and M3 Air models; it does not confirm the 13-inch M4 Air.
