To start, open Spotify’s Search tab, search for “DJ,” and tap the result; on mobile, you may also find DJ on Home. You need Spotify Premium, and the exact placement and availability can vary by market, language, device, and rollout.
What Spotify DJ does
DJ brings together familiar favorites, music you have not played in a while, and new releases, with spoken introductions or commentary about tracks and artists. Spotify says its suggestions draw on your listening history and preferences, alongside AI and insights from its global editorial experts. That is Spotify’s description of the feature, not a published technical specification of how individual recommendations are ranked.

Spotify calls DJ “your personal music companion.” It is designed as a continuing listening session rather than a fixed playlist: you can ask for a different direction while it is playing, and the session can respond to your request. Spotify says DJ had helped shape a more personalized listening experience for 94 million Premium users since launching in 2023; that company-reported figure is not a measure of satisfaction or active use.

- Open Spotify and go to Search.
- Search for “DJ.”
- Tap DJ to begin the session. Spotify also lists DJ on Home, particularly on mobile; the interface can differ across devices and rollouts.
These are Spotify Support’s current instructions. If DJ does not appear, check the app’s Home and Search screens and Spotify’s current support information for your region. DJ is a Premium feature, but market, language, and rollout differences mean Premium access alone does not guarantee that it will appear in every location or interface.

How to steer the music
While DJ is playing, Spotify Support lists four ways to change or guide the session:
- Type a request describing what you want to hear.
- Tap the microphone to make a request aloud, if voice input is available and enabled.
- Choose a personalized suggestion shown in the app.
- Tap the DJ control again to change the mood.
Spotify’s suggested requests include “Surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before” and “Give me some electronic beats for a midday run.” You can also try a mood or activity prompt such as “Play me some cry-in-the-car songs.” Treat these as starting points, not commands that guarantee particular tracks or a precise result. Spotify says a request can shape the session alongside your history, preferences, and other signals.

Requests are intended for music. In its May 2025 announcement, Spotify said DJ requests were in beta and would not return results for non-music requests such as audiobooks or podcasts. That qualification refers to the requests experience described at the time; it should not be read as a promise about every later feature or prompt.

DJ requests guide what the session plays. Spotify’s April 2026 announcement described Ask DJ as a conversational expansion that can also answer questions about music, offer recommendations, and provide context about what is playing. Spotify’s examples included “Start a session with new releases for my Sunday” and “When was this song first released?”

Ask DJ’s initial rollout was in English for Premium users aged 18 and over in the United States, Ireland, and Sweden. Those were the announced initial eligibility details, not universal requirements or a promise of availability elsewhere. Spotify describes Ask DJ as a beta and warns that responses may be inaccurate or incomplete, so verify factual answers when accuracy matters.
Who can use DJ, and where it is available
Spotify Support identifies DJ as a Premium feature. Its UK support page also says listeners can change DJ’s language through the DJ menu and that the feature is available in a limited number of languages. Language options and market access change over time, so check Spotify’s current information and the options shown in your app.

In May 2025, Spotify said DJ requests were available in English to Premium listeners in more than 60 markets where DJ was available. That announcement also said listeners could use voice requests in Android Auto after granting DJ microphone access on their phone. Because both statements describe an earlier rollout, check the current app for the options available to you.

What “beta” means for listeners
Spotify has described DJ requests and Ask DJ as beta experiences. In practical terms, requests may not produce the intended mood or selection, and Ask DJ’s conversational answers can be incomplete or inaccurate. Spotify has not published an independently audited account of recommendation quality or a technical specification that would let listeners predict exactly why a particular track was chosen.
Spotify’s May 2025 announcement said DJ listener engagement “has nearly doubled over the past year.” The company did not define the engagement measure, so the statement should not be interpreted as a specific usage or satisfaction metric.
