Android tablets offer three different ways to keep apps visible together: split screen for two side-by-side apps, a manufacturer’s floating or pop-up window for an app that sits above another, and desktop windowing on some newer large-screen devices. The taps are not universal Android commands: menus depend on the tablet maker, Android version, model and app. Use the instructions for your device below, then check the maker’s current support page if a command is missing.
On a Pixel Tablet, the documented route is Overview, the app icon, Split, then a second app. On supported Samsung Galaxy tablets, the comparable overlay is called Open in pop-up view. Android desktop windowing is a separate mode that can provide several movable, resizable windows, but Google warns that it is not available on every device.

Choose the window mode that matches the job
Start by deciding whether both apps need permanent space or whether one app should briefly float above another. That choice determines which control to look for.

Split screen is the simplest choice when you need exactly two apps visible for a sustained task. A pop-up window is more useful when one app is temporary or needs to be repositioned. Desktop windowing is the most flexible arrangement, but it is an optional device feature rather than a standard capability of every Android tablet.

Before you try: identify the tablet and the app limits
- Note the tablet maker and model. A Pixel Tablet, a Samsung Galaxy tablet and another Android tablet can expose different labels and gestures for the same underlying idea.
- Check the Android version when a feature is version-gated. Pixel Tablet app-pair saving, for example, requires Android 15 or later. [c001]
- Keep in mind that an app can refuse split screen or a pop-up window. The absence of a command may indicate app incompatibility rather than a mistake in your gesture.
- If you use an external keyboard, trackpad, mouse or display, verify that your tablet supports Android desktop windowing; attaching an accessory does not add the feature to an unsupported model. [c002]
- Use the tablet maker’s current help page for model-specific names. Samsung notes that available screens and settings can vary by model, software version and carrier. [c004]
Pixel Tablet: put two apps side by side
Google documents three ways to start split screen on Pixel Tablet. You can begin from Overview, the Taskbar or the Home screen. The app you start with occupies one side; you then select the second app.
Method 1: start from Overview
- Open the first app.
- Swipe slowly up from the bottom edge and hold to enter Overview. If you use three-button navigation, tap the Overview button instead.
- At the top of the app’s Overview card, tap its app icon.
- Tap Split.
- Choose the second app from the available apps or Overview choices. The two apps now share the screen. [c001]
The slow swipe matters: a quick swipe normally returns Home, while a slow swipe-and-hold opens the recent-apps view where the split command is located.
Method 2: drag an app from the Taskbar
- Open the first app.
- Swipe up slowly until the Taskbar appears.
- Press and drag another app icon from the Taskbar to the left or right edge of the display.
- Release it when the split-screen placement is shown. [c001]
This route is convenient when the second app is already pinned or visible in the Taskbar. It does not make the Taskbar gesture a universal Android method; it is the documented Pixel Tablet behavior.

Method 3: start from Home
- From the Home screen, touch and hold the app icon you want to use first.
- Choose Split.
- Select the second app. [c001]
If Split is not offered for an app, try a different app pair. Some apps do not support split screen, and a device or software update can also change which commands appear.
Resize or swap the Pixel apps
A divider runs between the two apps. Drag the middle of that divider toward either side to give one app more room and the other less. For example, you can make a document wider while leaving a narrow reference pane.
Double-tap the center of the divider to swap the apps’ positions. This changes left and right placement without closing either app, which is useful when the app you are actively typing in needs to be nearer your dominant hand or a physical keyboard.

Save an app pair on Android 15 and later
- Open both apps in split screen.
- Open Overview while the pair is still active.
- Tap Save app pair below the two-app arrangement.
- Use the saved pair from the Home screen, or add it to the Taskbar for quicker relaunching. [c001]
The save command is specifically documented for Android 15 and later on Pixel Tablet. Do not assume that an earlier Android release, another Pixel device or another manufacturer exposes the same control.

To keep one app and dismiss the other, drag the divider all the way toward the app you want to close. Returning to Home exits the current split-screen arrangement. [c001]
Samsung Galaxy tablets: use pop-up view as a floating window
Samsung calls its movable overlay pop-up view. The exact screens can vary by Galaxy model, software version and carrier, but Samsung’s documented Recents route is consistent enough to use as the starting point.
Open an app in pop-up view from Recents
- Open the app you want to float.
- Open Recents to show recently used apps.
- Tap the app’s icon on its recent-app card.
- Tap Open in pop-up view. [c003][c004]
The app changes from a full-screen card to a window above the rest of the interface. If the command does not appear, the app or that tablet configuration may not support the mode.
Move, resize and control the window
- Move: drag the pop-up window itself to a new position.
- Resize: drag one of its sides to make the window larger or smaller.
- Minimize: use the window controls to collapse it to a floating icon.
- Reopen: tap the floating icon to bring the pop-up back.
- Maximize: use the controls to return the app to a full-screen view.
- Close: use the close control when the app is no longer needed. [c003][c004]
Minimizing is different from closing: the floating icon preserves a quick route back to the open window, while close ends that pop-up instance.

On supported Galaxy tablets, Samsung also documents dragging an app from the Edge panel toward the center of the screen to start pop-up view. The Edge-panel route and the gestures available around it vary by device and software, so use the Recents method when you do not see the expected panel or handle. [c003]

Do not confuse pop-up view with picture-in-picture
Picture-in-picture is a separate Android behavior. A supported video app can continue playback in a small, movable video window after you leave the app. The video service and the specific content must support PiP; a normal app cannot be made into a PiP window merely by opening it in pop-up view. Samsung lists PiP alongside its multi-window features but does not promise it for every app or video service. [c004]
Use pop-up view when you need the app’s ordinary controls and interface. Use PiP when the goal is specifically to keep compatible video playing while another task occupies the main screen.
Android desktop windowing: separate, resizable windows
On supported large-screen Android devices, desktop windowing provides a more computer-like arrangement of independent app windows. Google documents several ways to enter it and cautions that availability and behavior vary by device. [c002]
Enter desktop windowing
- From a full-screen or split-screen app: drag down the app’s top handle.
- From the app header: open the header’s window options and choose the desktop-windowing command shown on your device.
- With a physical keyboard: press Action + Ctrl + Down arrow. [c002]
The exact header icon or menu wording can differ, so the top-handle gesture is often the easiest touch-based test. If none of these entry points exists, the tablet may not support desktop windowing or may use a different software build.
Move and resize windows
- Drag a window by its header bar to reposition it.
- Drag a corner to resize it with touch.
- With a mouse, pen or trackpad, you can resize from a corner or an edge. [c002]
Unlike split screen, desktop windowing is not limited to a fixed two-pane divider. Each supported window can be arranged independently, subject to the tablet’s available screen area and the app’s own behavior.
Use a keyboard, trackpad and external display
Google says that a supported device connected to an external keyboard and trackpad opens apps in desktop windowing automatically. The accessories are an entry route on compatible hardware, not a universal upgrade for every Android tablet. [c002]

When you connect an external display, the tablet may mirror its screen or start a separate desktop session, depending on the device and settings. Google says windows can move between the tablet and a connected display, but they cannot be moved onto a display that is currently running a full-screen app. [c002]

What to do when an option is missing
The split or pop-up command is absent
First try another app. App developers can disable split-screen or floating behavior, so one app may offer the command while another does not. If several apps lack it, check the tablet’s model and software documentation; Samsung specifically warns that menus and settings vary by model, software version and carrier. [c004]
The gesture does not open the expected screen
On Pixel Tablet, use a slow upward swipe-and-hold for Overview rather than a quick swipe. With three-button navigation, use the Overview button. On a Galaxy tablet, use Recents and tap the app icon instead of assuming a Pixel gesture applies.
The app pair will not save
Pixel’s Save app pair command requires Android 15 or later and must be used from Overview while both apps are already in split screen. If the command is not present, verify the Android version and that the two apps are currently paired in the split layout. [c001]
Desktop windowing is unavailable
Google states that desktop windowing is not available on all devices. Confirm that your tablet is a supported large-screen model before troubleshooting keyboards, trackpads or displays. If the tablet does support it, test the top-handle gesture, the app-header options and the keyboard shortcut separately; a missing route can reflect device-specific software rather than a faulty accessory. Mirroring and a separate desktop session are both documented possibilities. Check the tablet’s display settings and current mode before moving windows. A window cannot be moved onto a display that is occupied by a full-screen app, according to Google’s desktop-windowing guidance. [c002]
Practical ways to combine the modes
Reference material beside a document
Use Pixel split screen when both the reference app and the document need stable, readable areas. Adjust the divider so the document receives the larger pane, then double-tap the divider if you need to reverse their positions. On a Galaxy tablet, use pop-up view instead when the reference is occasional and should be moved out of the way between checks.
A utility over a primary task
A movable pop-up is suited to a calculator, note or message that you consult briefly while the main app remains full size. Minimize it to the floating icon when it is temporarily irrelevant, then reopen it without reconstructing the arrangement.
Video while doing another task
Try PiP only when the video app and content support it. If they do not, a regular split-screen or pop-up arrangement may be available, but it will use the app’s ordinary window rather than PiP’s dedicated video behavior.
Several independent work areas
Choose desktop windowing on a supported large-screen device when two panes are too restrictive. A keyboard and trackpad can make that mode start automatically on compatible hardware, while an external display can provide either a mirrored view or a separate desktop session depending on the device and settings.
Key limitations to remember
- There is no single set of Android tablet menus for split screen or floating windows. Maker, model, Android release and carrier software all matter.
- Some Pixel instructions, including saved app pairs, are tied to Android 15 or later.
- Some apps refuse split screen, pop-up view or PiP; changing the window mode cannot override that app-level support.
- Desktop windowing is a supported-device feature, not a guaranteed part of Android on every large display.
- Google’s official wording is: “This feature isn’t available on all devices, and the experience may vary.” That qualification applies to desktop windowing availability. [c002]
