The put gains value as the index falls below its strike, creating a floor after the premium and trading costs. You retain upside participation, but the insurance premium is a real and recurring cost.
The right strike, expiration, contract count and roll schedule depend on your portfolio’s value, its sensitivity to the S&P 500, the percentage of losses you can tolerate, current implied volatility and the option’s liquidity. The process below shows how to make those decisions without treating a generic strike or contract count as personal advice.

What an SPX protective put does
A protective put combines two positions:
- Ownership of a stock portfolio, fund or other assets whose market risk you want to reduce.
- A long put option on the S&P 500 Index (SPX).
Cboe describes the structure as owning or buying a portfolio of stocks and buying corresponding stock-index puts to hedge part of the portfolio’s downside. The put gives its owner the right, but not the obligation, to sell at the selected strike under the contract’s terms. For an index option, settlement is in cash rather than delivery of the individual stocks. Confirm the current SPX contract specification, including its multiplier, settlement procedure and exercise style, with your broker before trading.
At expiration, a long put’s intrinsic value is generally the amount by which the strike exceeds the index settlement level, multiplied by the contract’s stated multiplier. Before expiration, the option’s market value also reflects time remaining, implied volatility, interest rates and expectations about the index. You pay the premium whether or not the put is ultimately useful.

The hedge establishes a floor only for the exposure matched by the option. If your portfolio falls for reasons unrelated to the S&P 500, the put may not offset those losses. Cboe characterizes the protective put as limiting downside and establishing a floor while leaving upside potentially unlimited, after premium and commission costs.
Start by defining what you are hedging
Identify the portfolio slice
Decide whether the hedge applies to the entire portfolio or only a defined portion. A retirement account may need a different hedge horizon from a tactical equity position, and a concentrated holding may need a different index than a diversified large-cap allocation. Write down the dollar value to be protected and the percentage of the portfolio you intentionally want to insure.
Measure S&P 500 sensitivity
SPX options track broad U.S. large-cap equity exposure. They are not a perfect substitute for every stock portfolio. A portfolio concentrated in technology, small companies, international shares, commodities or illiquid securities can move differently from the S&P 500. That mismatch is basis risk: the index put can perform as expected while the portfolio does not, or the portfolio can fall while the index declines less.

Recalculate it when the portfolio’s holdings or market regime change, and treat the result as an estimate rather than a precise hedge ratio.
Set the protection objective
Specify the loss you are willing to absorb before the hedge responds. This is the hedge’s deductible or first-loss level. Also decide whether you need:
- Protection through a particular date, such as a reporting period or a planned withdrawal.
- A hedge that remains in place continuously through repeated monthly or quarterly rolls.
- Protection for a market shock only, accepting that the option may expire unused.
Without a defined objective, it is impossible to judge whether a premium is reasonable or whether the put is too small, too short-dated or too far out of the money.
Calculate a beta-adjusted contract size
SPX contracts cover an index notional determined by the current SPX level and the contract multiplier shown by your broker. The multiplier is part of the contract specification; do not assume that a value from another index option applies.

Contracts ≈ (portfolio value × hedge fraction × estimated beta) ÷ (current SPX level × contract multiplier)
For example, if you want to hedge only 60% of a portfolio, use 0.60 as the hedge fraction. If the portfolio’s estimated beta is 1.1, multiply the targeted portfolio value by 1.1 before comparing it with the SPX notional per contract. Use the live index level and the multiplier displayed in the order ticket. Round to a whole number of contracts, then examine the effect of rounding: rounding up creates a larger hedge and higher premium; rounding down leaves more exposure unprotected.

This calculation is a starting exposure match, not a promise that the portfolio and index will move together. It does not account for changes in beta, dividends, tracking differences, option delta, intraday price moves or the fact that the portfolio may not be fully invested. A qualified adviser or risk professional can help test the hedge against historical and stress scenarios.
Choose the strike: deductible versus premium
The strike determines when the put begins to offset an index decline and how much the insurance costs.
| Strike choice | When protection starts | Typical economic trade-off | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| At the money or near the money | Close to the current SPX level | Responds sooner, but usually requires the largest premium | Can the portfolio absorb the premium and the remaining basis risk? |
| Moderately out of the money | Only after the index falls to the lower strike | Lower upfront cost, with the first part of a decline left uncovered | What percentage loss is acceptable before insurance begins? |
| Deep out of the money | Only after a substantial decline | Cheaper disaster protection, but less help in an ordinary correction | Is the goal catastrophe protection rather than a smooth drawdown? |
Out-of-the-money puts cost less because the index must fall farther before they have intrinsic value. The lower premium is not free: the portfolio absorbs losses between the current index level and the strike. Compare strikes by the loss they leave uncovered, not by premium alone.
Strike percentages are measured from the current index level. A put described as 5% out of the money is not permanently 5% out of the money; market movement changes that relationship. If you roll the hedge, select the new strike using the then-current SPX level and the same stated objective.
Choose expiration and design the roll
Match the date to the risk period
Buy an expiration that covers the period you actually need. A put expiring before a known liability date can leave a gap precisely when protection is required. A much longer-dated option can cover the period, but longer expirations generally carry higher premiums and expose you to more time-value decay if the hedge is not needed.
List the date on which protection ends and the date on which you will review the position. Do not wait until expiration day to discover that a roll is necessary.
Recommended Free Tools
Decide how often to roll
A rolling hedge sells or closes the existing option and buys a later expiration, often with a new strike. Monthly rolls can keep the hedge close to a chosen percentage distance from the index but create more commissions, bid-ask spread costs and operational work. Less frequent rolls reduce turnover but can allow the strike to become poorly aligned with the portfolio.
Write rules for both calm and stressed markets. Implied volatility often rises when investors seek insurance, so replacing a put after a sharp sell-off can be more expensive than buying protection during a quiet period. A rule-based schedule helps prevent an emotional decision, but it cannot eliminate changing premiums.
Understand the payoff before placing an order
At expiration, the put’s gross value is driven by the difference between the strike and the SPX settlement level. The portfolio’s result is the stock portfolio’s gain or loss plus that option value, less the premium, commissions and other trading costs.

| SPX outcome at expiration | Put position | Portfolio implication |
|---|---|---|
| Above the strike | The put may expire with no intrinsic value | The portfolio participates in the market move, but the premium remains a cost |
| Slightly below the strike | The put begins offsetting index losses | The portfolio still absorbs losses and the premium until the hedge value catches up |
| Far below the strike | The put’s value increases as the index falls | The matched portion of the portfolio receives an offset, subject to basis risk and contract sizing |
The “floor” is therefore not a guaranteed account value. It is an approximate floor for the beta-adjusted exposure represented by the contracts, after the premium and costs. A portfolio with a different composition can diverge materially from the index.

Check the contract and execution details
Before submitting an order, verify each item in the current broker specification:
- Underlying: confirm that the option is on the S&P 500 Index and not a similarly named exchange-traded product.
- Settlement: SPX options are cash-settled under their contract terms; confirm how the broker credits or debits settlement.
- Multiplier and notional: use the value shown for the exact contract and expiration.
- Exercise style: confirm whether the selected series can be exercised before expiration and how that affects your plan.
- Trading hours: check the hours for the specific series and the procedures near expiration.
- Liquidity: inspect bid-ask spread, displayed size and recent trading activity. A low quoted premium can be overwhelmed by a wide spread.
- Permissions and margin: obtain the required options approval and understand the cash requirements for a long option and for any spread or short call.
- Commissions and fees: include opening, closing and rolling costs in the hedge budget.
- Tax treatment: rules vary by country, account type and instrument. Obtain current tax advice before relying on a projected after-tax result.
Use a limit order when appropriate and read the confirmation carefully. A protective put is a long option; accidentally selling the put creates the opposite risk profile.
Why premiums change
Implied volatility
Premiums generally rise when implied volatility rises. This is why protection can be most expensive when fear is already high. A quote from a calm session cannot be used as a standing cost for the next roll.
Time to expiration
Longer-dated options generally cost more because they cover more time and uncertainty. Shorter-dated options may appear cheaper but require more frequent replacement and can leave a gap if the market moves near expiration.

Strike and market level
Near-the-money puts usually cost more than lower-strike puts because they begin responding sooner. As SPX moves, a previously out-of-the-money put can become near the money, changing both its value and the cost of rolling.
Trading friction
Include the bid-ask spread, commissions, exchange and regulatory fees, and the price impact of entering or exiting a large order. For a recurring hedge, these costs can be as important as a single quoted premium.
No current premium, volatility or performance figure should be treated as permanent. Option chains change continuously, so obtain a live quote for the exact strike and expiration you are evaluating.
When a full protective put is too expensive
Collar
A collar keeps the portfolio, buys a put and sells an out-of-the-money call. The call premium offsets part or all of the put premium. In exchange, gains above the call strike are surrendered or transferred to the call buyer. The collar is appropriate only if you are willing to cap upside during the selected period.

Choose the put strike based on the loss you will tolerate, then choose a call strike that reflects the maximum upside you are prepared to give up. The premiums do not automatically cancel; the net debit or credit depends on current volatility, strikes and expirations.
Put-spread collar
A put-spread collar buys a higher-strike put, sells a lower-strike put and sells an out-of-the-money call. Selling the lower-strike put reduces the cost of the long put, while selling the call helps finance the spread. The result has three defined boundaries:
- Losses above the long-put strike are not protected by the option.
- Protection is strongest between the long-put and short-put strikes.
- Below the short-put strike, additional index declines are no longer offset by the spread, and gains above the short-call strike are capped.
Cboe’s CLLZ methodology illustrates this design with a monthly SPX put spread covering approximately 2.5% to 5% below the index and a monthly out-of-the-money call sold to cover the spread cost. That methodology is an illustration, not a recommendation or a forecast of current pricing.
What benchmark examples can—and cannot—tell you
Cboe’s PPUT benchmark illustrates a long S&P 500 position combined with a monthly 5% out-of-the-money SPX put. It is useful for understanding a repeatable rule, but it does not tell you whether that strike, frequency or cost suits your portfolio. A benchmark follows its published methodology; an individual hedge must account for your holdings, cash flows, tax position and tolerance for loss.
The PPUT and CLLZ examples also show why strategy labels are incomplete. Two investors can both say they “hedge with puts” while choosing different deductibles, expirations, roll dates and contract sizes, producing very different outcomes.

Risks and common mistakes
Assuming the index is your portfolio
A broad index hedge can leave a concentrated or international portfolio under-hedged. Compare the portfolio’s historical sensitivity and sector composition with the S&P 500 before treating the option notional as protection.
Buying too few contracts
A hedge that is materially smaller than the targeted exposure may feel reassuring while offsetting only a small portion of a drawdown. Recheck the notional after portfolio deposits, withdrawals and large market moves.
Buying too many contracts
Over-hedging can turn a rising portfolio into a disappointing result because the put loses value or expires unused while the premium is paid. Round contract counts deliberately and document why the chosen amount is larger or smaller than the formula’s unrounded result.
Best Value
Ignoring the deductible
A low-cost, far-out-of-the-money put may not respond to the ordinary decline you are trying to manage. State the percentage loss you accept before protection begins and compare every candidate strike with that number.
Letting the option expire without a plan
Expiration can leave the portfolio unhedged on the next trading day. Set a roll or removal rule in advance, including how many days before expiration you will review liquidity and replacement cost.
Focusing only on premium
The cheapest quote can have the widest spread, the least useful strike or an expiration that does not cover the risk period. Compare total cost, protection range, liquidity and lost upside.

A practical implementation checklist
- Inventory the exposure: record the portfolio value, holdings, currency, intended hedge fraction and the date through which protection is required.
- Estimate beta: choose a measurement period, document the method and note holdings that can create substantial basis risk.
- Set the deductible: write the maximum percentage decline you are willing to absorb before the put starts responding.
- Check current SPX terms: confirm the index, multiplier, cash settlement, exercise style, hours and expiration conventions.
- Calculate notional: apply the beta-adjusted sizing equation and examine the result after rounding to whole contracts.
- Compare expirations: select the series that covers the risk period and estimate the number and dates of future rolls.
- Compare strikes: record premium, spread, implied volatility, first-loss level and the resulting protected range for each candidate.
- Choose the structure: use a long put when preserving upside is more important than premium reduction; consider a collar or put-spread collar only if you accept their caps and limits.
- Confirm costs and tax treatment: include commissions, fees, spread assumptions and advice specific to your jurisdiction and account.
- Place and verify the order: use the correct buy-to-open or multi-leg instruction, review the fill and save the contract details.
- Monitor: track portfolio value, beta, SPX level, option delta, time to expiration, implied volatility and the remaining hedge notional.
- Roll or close deliberately: follow the written schedule, reassess the objective and avoid allowing an accidental lapse.
How to monitor the hedge after purchase
Review the hedge whenever the portfolio changes materially, not only on a calendar date. A large deposit, withdrawal, stock sale or sector rotation can change the exposure that the original contracts were meant to cover. A large SPX move can also make the strike much closer to or farther from the market than intended.
Track two separate results: the portfolio’s market performance and the option’s mark-to-market value. The put can lose value during a rising market even when it is performing its insurance role; judging it as a stand-alone investment misses the purpose of the combined position. Conversely, a put can gain value while the portfolio falls, but the gain may not match the portfolio loss if basis risk or a sizing mismatch is large.
Keep records of the original objective, strike distance, expiration, number of contracts, premium, commissions, roll decisions and reasons for changing the hedge. Those records make it possible to distinguish an unsuitable design from a normal insurance cost.
Questions to resolve with a broker or adviser
- What is the exact current multiplier and cash-settlement process for this SPX series?
- What options approval, collateral and account permissions are required for a long put, collar or put-spread collar?
- How are exercise, expiration and settlement handled in this account?
- What are the all-in commissions, exchange fees and estimated spread costs for opening and rolling?
- How will the strategy be treated for tax purposes in the relevant jurisdiction and account type?
- How should the hedge be adjusted if portfolio beta, value or composition changes?
The SEC advises investors to understand the standardized-options disclosure and the risks arising from the underlying asset before trading. Read the current OCC and SEC disclosures and obtain qualified advice for suitability, tax and execution questions.
Bottom line
An SPX protective put is portfolio insurance: buy a cash-settled S&P 500 put, size it to the beta-adjusted exposure you actually want to protect, choose a strike that matches your deductible, and select an expiration and roll schedule that covers the risk period. The trade-off is explicit. You pay the premium and trading costs even when the market rises, while a lower-cost collar or put-spread collar requires you to surrender upside or accept a limit on deep-loss protection. Because premiums, volatility, liquidity and contract specifications change, evaluate the complete payoff and current terms rather than relying on a generic strike or quoted cost.
