Results come from participating apps available in your country or region, so Siri is a cross-app shortcut rather than a complete index of every streaming catalog.
What Siri can find on Apple TV
Siri handles two kinds of requests. You can name a specific title when you already know what you want, or describe the type of program you want to discover. Apple’s examples include finding a movie by title, playing a particular episode, searching by genre, and filtering by cast, director, subject, popularity, or suitability for children.

- Exact titles: Ask for a movie, series, season, or episode by name.
- Genres and moods: Try comedies, documentaries, horror, dramas, or another descriptive category.
- People: Search for films starring an actor or directed by a particular person.
- Subjects: Describe a topic, such as documentaries about cars.
- Audience suitability: Ask for shows or movies that are good for kids.
- Popularity and discovery: Ask for popular titles or say “What should I watch?” after voice recognition is configured.
The results screen may show more than one match. Select the title you want, then choose an available provider or app. Whether a particular service, title, or playback option appears depends on provider participation, licensing, and your Apple TV country or region.

Siri search is supported on Apple TV HD and on Apple TV 4K models beginning with the first generation. Siri availability also depends on the language and region selected for the device. Apple maintains a list of supported countries, regions, and languages; a model that works in one market may not offer Siri in another.

If you already own an Apple TV HD or a supported Apple TV 4K, learning this feature does not require new hardware. A newer Apple TV or a replacement remote is not automatically necessary.
- Confirm the device is an Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K.
- Make sure the Apple TV is connected to the internet and the Siri Remote is paired.
- Check the selected language and region under the Apple TV settings.
- Remember that available apps and search providers can differ even when the hardware is supported.
How do I ask Siri to find a movie or show?
- Wake the listening control: Press and hold the Siri button on the Siri Remote. Apple’s current Apple TV 4K guide labels this control the Siri/Search button; the wording on your remote can vary by model.
- Speak while holding the button: Say the title or description in a normal voice. Do not tap and release before speaking, because Siri is designed to listen while the button is held.
- Release the button: Let go when you finish. Apple TV processes the request and displays matching results.
- Choose the result: Select the movie, series, season, or episode you intended. If several titles have similar names, Siri presents a choice rather than silently assuming one.
- Choose a provider or action: Depending on the result, you may be able to open an app, start playback, view details, or select another participating service.
Start with a short request if recognition is unreliable. Once Siri understands the title, you can refine the search on screen or try a second request with one additional detail, such as the actor or year.
Use an exact title
For a known movie, say Find [movie title]. You can also ask Siri to watch or play the named title. For television, Apple gives the example Play Episode 3 of Season 1 of [TV show]. If the title is shared by several programs, add the actor, director, year, or the word “movie” or “series” to narrow it.

How to discover something without knowing the title
Discovery works best when your request combines a clear content type with one or two useful attributes. Apple documents searches by title, topic, genre, actor, director, and age appropriateness, and recommends trying different wording because Siri understands many natural-language formulations.

There is no guaranteed formula for every phrasing. A failed query does not prove that Siri cannot search the subject or app. Try the title first, remove one adjective, or replace a phrase such as “lighthearted” with a standard genre such as “comedy.”
Can Siri search Netflix or other apps?
Apple TV’s general search can return content from participating apps, but participation is not universal. The provider list and individual titles vary by country or region and can change as services alter their Apple TV integration or licensing. Siri therefore cannot promise to search every service installed on your Apple TV.

When a result appears, the provider shown on the title page is the practical answer to “where can I watch it?” If the app you use does not appear, check Apple’s regional provider directory for your location. The absence of one service in search may reflect regional availability or provider participation rather than a fault with your remote.
You may still be able to open the app directly and use its own search tool. A service can contain a title without exposing that catalog to Apple TV’s cross-app search.
How to search YouTube with Siri
YouTube is handled differently from the general Apple TV Search results. Include the word “YouTube” in the spoken request, for example Search YouTube for Minecraft. Siri opens YouTube, or asks you to install it if it is not present, and passes the query to YouTube’s search screen.
The general Search app does not include YouTube results. If you simply ask for a topic without naming YouTube, Siri may show matches from other participating apps instead. Saying “YouTube” makes your intended destination explicit.

What to do when Siri does not respond
Work through these checks in order. They separate an activation problem from a language, region, account, or provider limitation.
1. Check Siri in Settings
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Choose General.
- Open Siri and confirm that Siri is available and enabled.
- Review the selected Language and Region, then compare them with Apple’s current supported-country and language list.
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also says the Apple Account billing country or region must match the supported country or region selected for Siri. If those settings disagree, correct the account or device region as appropriate and test again.
2. Check the button and remote
Press and hold the Siri/Siri Search button while speaking. If the button is released immediately, Apple TV may interpret the action as an ordinary navigation press instead of a voice request. If the remote does not light or respond at all, charge it, move closer to Apple TV, and verify that it remains paired before testing Siri again.

3. Simplify the wording
Try a short, distinctive title such as Find [movie title]. If that works, repeat the original discovery request with fewer filters. Siri supports natural language, but a long request with several uncommon names can be transcribed incorrectly.
4. Separate availability from recognition
If Siri correctly recognizes the title but no provider appears, the issue may be regional or related to provider participation. Check the title in the app you expect to use and consult Apple’s regional provider information. Do not assume that reinstalling the remote or changing the wording will add a service that is not supported in your region.
5. Try the Apple TV app search screen
Open the Apple TV app, open its sidebar, and select Search. Enter a title or description with the onscreen keyboard, or browse the featured categories. The Apple TV app supports natural-language descriptions as well as searches for titles, cast, and genre. This route is useful when speaking is inconvenient or when you want to inspect categories visually.

Use Siri when you know the request and want a quick result. Use the Apple TV app when you prefer a visual list, need to correct a transcription manually, or want to browse featured categories rather than formulate a spoken query.
How to get more reliable results
- Lead with the action: Begin with “Find,” “Show me,” “Play,” or “Search.”
- Use one clear subject: Say “documentaries about cars” instead of a long sentence containing several unrelated ideas.
- Distinguish movies from shows: Add “movie,” “film,” “TV show,” “series,” “season,” or “episode.”
- Say the app when you mean one app: Include “YouTube” for a YouTube search; otherwise Siri uses the general participating-app search.
- Add a disambiguator: An actor, director, or topic can separate two titles with the same name.
- Try alternate wording: Replace an unusual synonym with a common genre or a shorter description if the first request produces poor results.
- Check the displayed text: Before opening a result, confirm that Siri transcribed names and numbers correctly, especially for titles containing uncommon words.
What you may need to watch a result
Finding a title and playing it are separate steps. A result can identify a program without including playback in your current setup. The selected provider may require its own app, account, sign-in, or subscription, and some titles may be unavailable in your region. Siri search itself does not provide a subscription or bypass a provider’s access requirements.
If several providers appear, compare the options shown on the title page and select the one you already use. If none is listed, search the individual apps installed on your Apple TV and verify the title’s regional availability.
Common questions about Siri movie searches
Do I need to buy a new Apple TV to use Siri search?
No, not if you already have an Apple TV HD or an Apple TV 4K model supported in your language and region. Apple lists both device families as supported. A hardware purchase is relevant only when your current device is not a supported model or cannot use Siri in its configured region and language.

Can Siri find a specific episode?
Yes. Ask for the show and identify the season and episode, such as Play Episode 3 of Season 1 of [TV show]. Review the result before playback when multiple versions or providers are shown.
Why does Siri find some services but not the one I subscribe to?
Apple TV search includes participating providers, and the set differs by country or region. The service may not participate in Apple’s search integration, may not offer the title in your market, or may require searching inside its own app. Check Apple’s regional provider directory and the service’s own search screen.

Does Siri search YouTube automatically?
No. Name YouTube in the request, such as Search YouTube for Minecraft. Apple says the general Search app does not search YouTube; Siri sends an explicitly named YouTube request to YouTube’s search screen.
What if Siri understands me but returns nothing?
Try a shorter title or a simpler category, then test the same request in the Apple TV app’s Search screen. If the title is recognized but still has no provider, investigate regional availability and provider participation rather than assuming the voice feature is broken.
Can I browse without speaking?
Yes. Open the Apple TV app, open its sidebar, choose Search, and enter a term with the onscreen controls. You can also browse featured categories there.
