How to use separate Chrome profiles on a Chromebook when the feature isn’t available

If Chrome on your Chromebook does not show the desktop Add Chrome profile option, use the Chromebook’s account features instead. For lasting separation, add another Chromebook user. To access a second Google account without creating another user, add that account under Settings > Accounts. For a one-time, sign-out-and-delete session, use Browse as Guest when the device allows it.

These options solve different problems: a Chromebook user separates regular people or workspaces, an additional Google Account adds sign-in access inside the current session, and Guest mode creates a temporary session. Choosing the right one prevents the common mistake of expecting a second Google account to behave like a separate Chrome profile.

Why the Chrome profile button is missing on a Chromebook

Google’s desktop Chrome instructions describe opening the profile menu and adding a Chrome profile. Those instructions are for computer editions of Chrome. The same help page directs Chromebook owners to share the device by adding people to the Chromebook instead: Manage Chrome with multiple profiles.

ChromeOS treats a person who signs in to the device as the primary boundary. That account gets its own Chromebook session and user-specific information. A second account added inside that session is a convenience for signing in to websites or Android apps, not another Chromebook user. Guest mode is a disposable session rather than a saved profile.

In practical terms, you should stop looking for a hidden browser switch and decide what must be separated. If the requirement is separate desktops, bookmarks and recurring sign-ins for different people, use Chromebook users. If the requirement is simply opening a second Gmail, Drive or Android-app account, add a Google Account. If somebody needs a short session and nothing should remain locally afterward, use Guest.

Choose the built-in option that matches your goal

Need Best option What it provides Important limitation
Keep regular users’ Chromebook data separate Add a Chromebook user Separate sign-in sessions and user information such as bookmarks; users can switch accounts and move windows between accounts Some device settings, including network settings, remain shared; an administrator may restrict additional users
Use another account on sites or Android apps Add an additional Google Account Makes another account available while you remain in the current Chromebook session; supports simultaneous use or switching Does not create a separate Chromebook user or a separate ChromeOS session
Let someone use the Chromebook briefly Browse as Guest Temporary browsing without signing in to a Google Account Preferences are not retained, and exiting deletes local session files, cookies, website data and browsing activity; an administrator can disable it

For a family member who uses the Chromebook regularly, or for a durable work/personal split, choose a separate Chromebook user. Choose an additional account when you only need another identity in a service such as Gmail or an Android app. Choose Guest when the session should leave no local sign-in data after it ends.

Add a separate Chromebook user for persistent separation

A Chromebook user is the closest built-in equivalent to a separate Chrome profile when the profile picker is unavailable. Each person signs in with their own account and receives their own Chromebook session, profile picture and bookmarks. Google documents support for up to five users on a Chromebook: Sign in multiple people at the same time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Add or allow the person

Start from the Chromebook’s sign-in screen or account controls and use the option to add or allow another person. The exact wording can vary with ChromeOS version and administrator policy. If the device asks an owner or administrator to approve the person, that approval must happen before the new user can sign in.

On a personal Chromebook, the owner account normally controls who may be added. On a school or work Chromebook, the enrollment policy may limit the available accounts or remove the option entirely. Treat a missing Add person control as a policy question first, not as proof that Chrome is damaged.

2. Sign in as the new user

After the person has been added, return to the sign-in screen and select that person. They sign in with their own Google Account and complete any verification or ChromeOS setup shown on screen. Their bookmarks and other user-specific information are associated with that Chromebook user, not with the account that was already signed in.

Each person should use their own credentials rather than sharing one password. That keeps the sign-in identity clear and lets the user’s Chromebook information remain attached to the correct account. If the organization requires a particular account domain or verification step, follow that prompt instead of trying to substitute a personal account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Switch users without signing out

When more than one person is signed in, open the account or power menu and choose Sign in another user. ChromeOS can keep both sessions active, allowing users to switch between accounts. Google also documents moving windows between signed-in accounts. Use this when two people need to work on the same Chromebook without closing every open window.

Switching is different from adding a second Google Account. A switched user gets the Chromebook session belonging to that person. An account added under Settings > Accounts remains an identity available inside the current session. If you need to hand the keyboard to another person, switch to that person’s Chromebook user rather than merely changing the account in a website.

What remains shared

Separate users are stronger than adding another account inside one session, but they are not two completely independent devices. Certain device-level settings, including saved network connections, can be shared. A person who needs a fully independent device configuration should use a separate Chromebook or ask the administrator what isolation the organization provides.

That shared-device behavior is important in offices, classrooms and households. A new user should not be promised that every setting, connection or device preference will be invisible to everyone else. The user boundary is primarily the sign-in session and its user-specific information, not a guarantee that the hardware behaves like two unrelated Chromebooks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add another Google Account inside your current Chromebook session

Use this route when you need to reach a second Google identity but do not need a second Chromebook desktop. Google describes it as a way to use multiple accounts at the same time or switch among them on websites and Android apps: Manage Google Accounts on your Chromebook.

Exact settings path

  1. Open the status area by selecting the time on the shelf.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Accounts.
  4. Select Add Google Account.
  5. Follow the sign-in prompts for the additional account.

After setup, the added account can be selected where a website or Android app supports account switching. Your current Chromebook user, local files and ChromeOS session remain the same. The added account does not get its own Chromebook sign-in tile, separate desktop, or independent user-level settings.

If the account is intended only for one website, the site may still have its own account switcher or sign-in rules. Adding the account to ChromeOS makes it available for supported services; it does not force every website or app to recognize every account automatically. Continue using the service’s own account menu when it offers one.

When this is the better choice

  • You need to check a personal and work account in the same session.
  • An Android app offers an account switcher and you want both accounts available.
  • You do not want to create another person on the device.
  • You are the only regular user and only need another web identity.

When not to use it

Do not use an additional account as a privacy boundary between two people. The Chromebook session, local downloads and browser state still belong to the current user. For regular sharing, create another Chromebook user instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Browse as Guest for a temporary session

Guest mode is intended for a short-lived session, such as lending the Chromebook to someone or checking a site without adding an account. It does not create a saved profile and does not retain saved preferences. Google’s current instructions are at Browse as a Guest.

Start a guest session

  1. Sign out of the current Chromebook user.
  2. On the sign-in screen, select Browse as Guest.
  3. Use the browser for the temporary task without signing in to a Google Account.

Because Guest is designed for temporary access, do not configure it as if it were a regular user. It is useful for a borrower, a quick lookup or a troubleshooting check when no persistent account should be created.

End the session correctly

  1. When finished, open the guest session’s controls.
  2. Select Exit guest.
  3. Confirm the exit if ChromeOS asks.

Exiting Guest deletes local files created in the session, cookies, website data and browsing activity. Because the session is cleared, downloaded files or preferences that someone expected to keep will not be available the next time Guest mode starts. Move anything that must be retained to an approved external or cloud location before exiting, and follow the owner’s rules for handling files.

Closing a window is not the same as ending the guest session. Use Exit guest so ChromeOS performs the cleanup. Anyone who needs bookmarks, saved preferences or recurring access should be added as a Chromebook user instead.

Guest mode’s boundaries

Guest mode is not an alternative for a regular user who needs bookmarks, extensions or persistent settings. It also may not appear on a work or school Chromebook. Organizations can turn guest browsing off or impose other sign-in restrictions.

What to do when Add person or Browse as Guest is missing

Missing controls often indicate policy rather than a broken Chrome installation. ChromeOS administrators can control whether people may sign in, whether guest browsing is available and which user types can use a managed device. See Google’s administrator documentation on ChromeOS device policies.

Work or school Chromebook

Contact the organization’s administrator and ask whether additional users or Guest mode are allowed. A standard user cannot override an administrator’s restriction. Do not attempt to bypass the policy; the restriction may be required for account, data or compliance reasons.

Ask specifically which of these is permitted: adding another managed user, allowing a personal Google Account, switching signed-in users, or using a guest session. The answer may differ by device group. If the administrator says sessions are ephemeral, clarify what must be saved to an approved cloud or external location before signing out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Personal Chromebook

If you own the device and the controls are unexpectedly absent, verify that you are using the owner account and that the Chromebook is not still managed by a former school or employer. A managed status can continue to enforce sign-in rules even after the device changes hands. The administrator or organization that enrolled it must remove those policies.

Do not assume that adding a Google Account will restore a missing user option. Account addition and user enrollment are separate controls, so a device can allow one and block the other.

Understand ephemeral browsing on managed devices

Some organizations configure ChromeOS for ephemeral sessions. Chrome Enterprise documentation describes policies that delete local data when a user signs out or when the browser exits: Allow private browsing. This is an administrator-controlled configuration, not a setting an ordinary user can turn on to imitate a missing profile feature.

Ephemeral policy and Guest mode have the same practical implication for local retention: do not expect downloads, cookies, history or preferences to survive the end of the session. The administrator decides whether the policy applies and which sign-in modes remain available.

Privacy and separation: what each option actually isolates

Separate Chromebook users

  • Best for two or more regular people or for a persistent work/personal split.
  • Provides distinct sign-in sessions and user-specific information such as bookmarks.
  • Supports switching between signed-in users and moving windows between accounts.
  • Does not make every device setting independent; some settings are shared.
  • Google documents up to five users on a Chromebook.

Additional Google Account

  • Best for account access inside one person’s existing session.
  • Works with supported websites and Android apps that offer account switching.
  • Leaves the Chromebook desktop and local user context unchanged.
  • Should not be presented as a separate profile for another person.
  • Does not create another sign-in tile or independent Chromebook settings.

Guest

  • Best for a brief session that should not create a saved Chromebook user.
  • Does not preserve preferences.
  • Deletes local session files and browsing data when the guest exits.
  • May be unavailable because of administrator policy.
  • Requires signing out first and choosing Exit guest when finished.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Will this person use the Chromebook again? If yes, add a Chromebook user. If no, continue to the next question.
  2. Is the only requirement access to another account on a website or Android app? Add a Google Account under Settings > Accounts.
  3. Should all local session data disappear when the task ends? Use Browse as Guest, if available, and select Exit guest when done.
  4. Are the controls absent on a managed device? Ask the administrator; policy restrictions cannot be replaced by a normal user setting.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Looking for “Add Chrome profile” in the Chromebook browser

That label belongs to desktop Chrome’s profile workflow. Use Chromebook users for persistent separation instead of trying to force the desktop menu onto ChromeOS.

Assuming “Add Google Account” creates another desktop

It only makes another account available within the current user session. If another person needs their own desktop and bookmarks, add that person as a Chromebook user.

Expecting Guest downloads to remain

Guest data is deleted when you choose Exit guest. Save only what the device owner or organization permits, and do not rely on Guest for files that must survive.

Trying to enable a disabled Guest option yourself

On a managed Chromebook, guest browsing and sign-in options can be administrator-controlled. Ask the administrator rather than attempting a workaround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving the wrong session open

If another person is about to use the device, sign out of your Chromebook user or switch explicitly to the intended user. Merely changing accounts inside Gmail does not hand over a separate Chromebook session.

Expecting complete device isolation

Separate users isolate user information, but some device-level settings remain shared. For independent network, policy and hardware configuration, use another device or confirm the organization’s isolation rules.

Security and account-handling practices

  • Use separate Chromebook users when another person needs a durable account boundary.
  • Sign out of your user session before handing over a personal Chromebook.
  • Use Guest for borrowers who should not access your saved Chromebook session.
  • Remember that separate users can still share device-level settings such as networks.
  • On an organization-managed device, follow the administrator’s sign-in and data-retention rules.
  • Do not leave a second person working inside your signed-in session merely because an account switcher is available.
  • Before ending Guest or an ephemeral session, move any permitted work to an approved cloud or external location.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install desktop Chrome profiles on ChromeOS?

The desktop profile instructions do not provide the Chromebook workflow. Use Chromebook users for separate sessions, an additional Google Account for account access, or Guest for temporary browsing.

How many Chromebook users can I add?

Google’s multiple-person guidance documents up to five users on a Chromebook. An administrator may impose a lower limit or restrict which accounts can sign in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will adding a Google Account give that person separate bookmarks?

No. The added account remains inside the current Chromebook user session. Separate bookmarks and user information require a separate Chromebook user.

Can two Chromebook users be signed in at once?

Yes. ChromeOS supports switching between signed-in accounts and moving windows between those accounts. Device-level settings can still be shared.

Does Guest mode save browsing history?

No. Guest is temporary, and exiting it deletes local files, cookies, website data and browsing activity. It also does not retain saved preferences.

Why is Browse as Guest unavailable?

On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may have disabled guest browsing or imposed sign-in restrictions. Ask the administrator; a normal user cannot replace that policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens to files created in Guest mode?

Local files created during the guest session are deleted when you choose Exit guest. Retain only files you are allowed to move to an approved location before ending the session.

Is an ephemeral session something I can turn on myself?

No. Ephemeral browsing is an administrator-controlled ChromeOS configuration. It deletes local data at sign-out or browser exit according to the organization’s policy.

The bottom line for missing Chrome profiles

A Chromebook does not need the desktop Chrome profile picker to support multiple people or accounts. Add a Chromebook user for persistent separation, add a Google Account for convenient access within one session, and use Browse as Guest for temporary browsing that is erased on exit. If any option is missing, the device’s owner or administrator controls availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the closest Chromebook equivalent to a separate Chrome profile?

Add a separate Chromebook user. It provides its own sign-in session and user-specific information such as bookmarks, although some device settings remain shared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use two Google accounts without adding another Chromebook user?

Yes. Open the status area, choose Settings, open Accounts and select Add Google Account. This supports account switching on supported websites and Android apps inside the current session.

Does Guest mode keep anything after I leave?

No. Choosing Exit guest deletes local files, cookies, website data and browsing activity, and Guest does not retain saved preferences.

What should I do if Add person and Browse as Guest are missing?

If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, ask the administrator whether additional users or Guest mode are allowed. Those restrictions cannot be overridden by a normal user.

Can Chromebook users switch without signing out?

Yes. When multiple people are signed in, use the account or power menu to choose Sign in another user. ChromeOS also supports moving windows between signed-in accounts.
