ScreenshotMachine and Puppeteer take screenshots in different ways: ScreenshotMachine captures a URL through its hosted HTTP API, while Puppeteer captures a page in its own controlled browser. For a job that needs ScreenshotMachine, send its API a GET request from your Node.js workflow; use Puppeteer separately when you need browser automation or a screenshot of the page already open in Puppeteer. The official documentation reviewed here does not describe a first-party Puppeteer adapter.
Choose the capture path that matches the job
- Use ScreenshotMachine when you want its hosted service to load a URL and return an image. Your job makes an HTTP request with the API key, target URL, and capture options. ScreenshotMachine’s API guide documents this request pattern.
- Use Puppeteer’s screenshot method when you need to capture the page in a browser that Puppeteer controls—for example, after browser-side navigation or automation. Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() reference documents an asynchronous method that returns screenshot data.
- Use both in one job only when the job needs both roles. Puppeteer can handle browser-side preparation or automation, while a separate HTTP request asks ScreenshotMachine to capture a URL. The documented API does not establish that ScreenshotMachine captures a Puppeteer page or shares its browser state.
If your only goal is to capture a page already loaded and prepared in Puppeteer, use page.screenshot() rather than making a second, independent hosted capture request.

Call ScreenshotMachine from a Node.js job
Prepare credentials and the request
Get a ScreenshotMachine API key and keep it in server-side configuration, such as an environment variable, rather than embedding it in public client-side code. The API requires key and url. Send a GET request to https://api.screenshotmachine.com/; encode the target URL and any values containing reserved characters.
Install Puppeteer if the same job also needs browser automation. The ScreenshotMachine request itself is an ordinary HTTP request and does not require a Puppeteer package or browser instance.

Runnable example: request and save a screenshot
This Node.js example sends the documented API parameters, checks for an HTTP error, and saves the returned bytes. Set SCREENSHOTMACHINE_API_KEY before running it. The example uses Node.js built-in fetch and file APIs; it does not depend on a ScreenshotMachine Puppeteer adapter.

If Puppeteer must prepare a browser page
Use Puppeteer for the browser work that genuinely needs it, then make the ScreenshotMachine request as a separate operation. For example, a job might use Puppeteer to inspect or automate a page, then ask ScreenshotMachine to capture a URL. Do not assume the hosted request inherits Puppeteer cookies, local storage, or the rendered DOM. The API guide documents a cookies parameter for the hosted request; pass the required cookie data explicitly if appropriate.

For example, to request a full-page PNG with a two-second wait, replace the relevant values in the example with dimension=1280xfull, format=png, and delay=2000. The delay is a fixed wait, not proof that a page’s network activity has settled or that every lazy-loaded element has appeared.

Use interaction and page-specific options when needed
The API guide also documents options for tailoring a hosted capture:
- Click or capture an element:

Encode parameter values rather than concatenating raw URLs or cookie strings into a query. URLSearchParams in the example handles query-string encoding for the values it receives.

Handle failures and make jobs repeatable
Common problems and fixes
- Missing or rejected API key: confirm the server-side environment variable is present and that the request uses the required
keyparameter. - Wrong target or malformed request: check that
urlis a complete target URL and that the request is sent as GET tohttps://api.screenshotmachine.com/. Use proper query encoding. - Unexpected dimensions: verify the
dimensionsyntax and the documented width and height limits. Usefullas the height value for a full-page capture. - Missing late-loading content: try a longer
delay; the vendor gives 2,000 ms or more as an example for some full-page captures. This is a timing adjustment, not a rendering-completion guarantee. - Stale result: set
cacheLimitto0when the job requires a fresh capture rather than an acceptable cached image. - Selector or click has no effect: check the CSS selector against the page as served to the hosted browser and ensure the targeted element exists at capture time.
- Saved file is unusable: check the HTTP status before writing the body, preserve the intended extension and format, and ensure the process has permission to write to the destination.
Reliability and cost considerations
For repeat jobs, decide whether fresh captures are actually necessary: cacheLimit=0 requests a fresh screenshot, while a nonzero allowance can permit a cached image within the specified age. The reviewed documentation provides no performance benchmark comparing ScreenshotMachine with Puppeteer, and it does not establish a relative speed or reliability advantage. Include request failures and file-write errors in the surrounding job’s normal retry and logging policy; the API example above checks HTTP success before saving output.
