Yes—a brand campaign can use images of Earth captured from space, but that usually means licensing existing satellite imagery or building a creative concept around it, not freely filming a commercial in orbit. Before production, confirm the image’s source, the rights for your exact promotional use, and any credit or endorsement restrictions.
What “shot from space” can mean for a campaign
A campaign can make satellite imagery its central creative asset: an image of a coastline, city, storm system, or other Earth feature can become a product design, an ad visual, or part of a film. Another option is to commission a new commercial capture, subject to the provider’s availability and license terms. The sources cited here do not establish the cost or timing of a new capture.

A documented product example is ESA’s 17 September 2024 account of Swatch X You. The collection featured seven watch designs based on images from Copernicus Sentinel satellites, with an online configurator that let customers choose imagery and zoom or rotate it. ESA described the collection as available worldwide when it published the account; that is historical information, not confirmation of current stock or availability. Which imagery sources may work for promotional use?

How to clear an image before production
- Define the campaign use. Specify whether the imagery will appear in a film, online ad, social promotion, print, packaging, or several formats. List intended territories and whether the work is paid promotion.
- Record the exact asset and its provenance. Keep the image identifier, source page, provider, and any supplied credit. For NASA-hosted material, distinguish NASA material from third-party content credited on the page.
- Get permission for that use from the rights holder. Public access or scientific access is not, by itself, a commercial advertising license. For commercial satellite data, confirm the terms with the provider that controls the image.
- Check attribution and brand-association rules. Include required credits, avoid language or design that implies agency endorsement, and treat agency logos or identifiers as separate from permission to use an image.
- Check people and other visible material. An image featuring identifiable NASA employees, astronauts, or other people may raise additional clearance issues. Review any third-party rights identified for the asset.
- Save the approval trail. Retain the applicable license or written permission, the asset and credit details, and the approved media and territory scope so the final placements can be checked against them.
Why NASA imagery needs an asset-by-asset check
NASA says many publicly released images and some footage may be used in advertising, but the permission is not blanket approval for every file or treatment. NASA sometimes uses third-party material with permission; that permission does not automatically extend to a brand using the material. Check the image-specific credits and NASA’s current advertising and media guidance before committing to an asset.

Even when an image may be used, the ad must not explicitly or implicitly suggest NASA endorses the product or service. NASA’s identifiers and insignia are separately restricted, so permission to use a photograph should not be treated as permission to add an agency mark.

- Use an existing public-agency image when its specific rights and credits fit the campaign. Verify any third-party material and restrictions before design or editing.
- License commercial imagery when a provider can grant rights for the intended campaign. Confirm that the license covers the actual promotional media and markets, rather than relying on an access program or research-use terms.
- Build a customizable product concept around satellite imagery, as Swatch and ESA did in the 2024 example. Treat that collaboration as a creative precedent, not evidence that the same arrangement or product is currently available.
The key decision is not simply whether an image can be viewed or downloaded. It is whether the rights holder permits this brand to use this particular image in this particular campaign, with the planned credit, placement, and geography.
