How to use Samsung Galaxy button shortcuts for accessibility and emergency features

Samsung Galaxy phones can launch accessibility services or emergency tools without opening the full Settings app. Configure accessibility shortcuts at Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility shortcuts, and configure Emergency SOS separately at Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS. Depending on your model, software version, and carrier, you may use the on-screen Accessibility button, Side + Volume up, or Volume up + Volume down. Emergency SOS uses five Side-button presses in Samsung’s US instructions, but swipe and countdown safeguards can change what happens next.

Which Galaxy shortcut should you use?

There are two different systems to configure: accessibility shortcuts for services such as TalkBack, high-contrast fonts, or Universal switch, and Emergency SOS for contacting emergency services or starting configured emergency actions. They are not interchangeable. An accessibility shortcut launches a selected service; Emergency SOS follows the safety settings configured on your phone.

Shortcut or feature Where it is configured How it is triggered What happens
Accessibility button Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility shortcuts Tap the Accessibility button in the Navigation bar Launches the selected accessibility service or action
Side + Volume up Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility shortcuts Press Side and Volume up together Launches one assigned service, or opens a Direct access selection window when two or more services are assigned
Volume up + Volume down Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility shortcuts Press and hold both volume buttons for three seconds Activates the selected accessibility service
Emergency SOS Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS Press the Side button five times on supported US configurations Begins the SOS behavior configured on the phone; a swipe or countdown may be required
Emergency sharing Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency sharing Use the sharing controls configured for emergency contacts Sends selected contacts location and low-battery information, with optional pictures or audio

Samsung says the exact menu names and available gestures vary by phone model and software version. Carrier settings can also change the accessibility screens. If a path below is missing, use the Settings search field for Accessibility shortcuts, Emergency SOS, or Side button instead of assuming that your phone supports every gesture.

Samsung’s current accessibility instructions are in Advanced accessibility settings and apps on your Galaxy phone or tablet. Its model-specific variation guidance appears in Customize Accessibility settings on your phone or tablet.

Set up an accessibility shortcut

Start with the service you actually need. A shortcut is useful only when it is configured before an urgent situation, so open the service’s accessibility settings and make sure it is enabled or available for selection first.

1. Open Accessibility shortcuts

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Tap Accessibility shortcuts.
  4. Review the shortcut methods shown on your device. Select the method that fits how you use the phone and then choose the service or action it should launch.

Some older Galaxy documentation places related controls under Advanced settings or calls them Direct access. Samsung’s current route uses Accessibility shortcuts, but the label on your phone can differ by generation.

2. Use the on-screen Accessibility button

  1. In Accessibility shortcuts, enable the Accessibility button shortcut.
  2. Select the accessibility action or service that should be available from the button.
  3. Return to the Home screen and look at the Navigation bar. The Accessibility button appears there when the feature is enabled and supported by your navigation layout.
  4. Tap the button whenever you need to launch the selected service.

This is usually the easiest method to discover and test because it does not depend on remembering a physical-button combination. It does require the screen to be visible and the Navigation bar control to remain accessible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Use Side + Volume up

  1. In Accessibility shortcuts, choose the option for the Side and Volume up buttons.
  2. Select the accessibility service or services to assign.
  3. Press the Side button and Volume up together to invoke the shortcut.

Samsung states that assigning two or more services causes a Direct access selection window to appear. Choose the service from that window rather than expecting one particular service to open automatically. If you assign only one service, the combination can activate that service directly on supported models.

4. Use Volume up + Volume down

  1. In Accessibility shortcuts, select the Volume up and Volume down buttons method.
  2. Choose the service to activate.
  3. Press and hold Volume up and Volume down together for at least three seconds.
  4. Release both buttons when the service activates or when the phone displays a confirmation.

This method is intended for a single selected service. It is different from briefly pressing either volume key and should not be confused with the Side + Volume up shortcut.

Choose the right accessibility method

Use case Best starting choice Reason Trade-off
You can see and operate the screen Accessibility button The control is visible in the Navigation bar and is easy to test It depends on the screen, Navigation bar, and current navigation layout
You want a physical gesture and one service Side + Volume up A quick two-button press can open the assigned service Two or more assigned services produce a selection window
You need a press-and-hold gesture Volume up + Volume down Holding both volume buttons for three seconds activates the chosen service Support and naming vary, and the hold must last long enough
You need several accessibility services Side + Volume up with multiple services Direct access lets you choose the service after the gesture The extra selection step is slower than a single-service shortcut

Do not enable several gestures without testing them. A shortcut that is easy to trigger accidentally can be inconvenient, while one that depends on a visible on-screen control may not help if the display is difficult to use. Pick the method that remains practical with the service enabled.

Configure Emergency SOS before you need it

Emergency SOS is configured separately from accessibility shortcuts. Samsung’s US support instructions use five presses of the Side button to begin SOS actions, but the phone can require an additional confirmation or delay before the final call or alert occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the Emergency SOS controls

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Safety and emergency.
  3. Tap Emergency SOS.
  4. Review every option shown, including the call confirmation, countdown, and warning sound controls.

Samsung documents the five-press trigger and the controls in Use your Galaxy phone or tablet in emergency situations.

Understand the five-press sequence

Pressing the Side button five times starts the SOS process on the supported US setup described by Samsung. It does not necessarily mean the phone immediately places a call the instant the fifth press is detected. The next step depends on your settings.

  • Require swipe to call: When enabled, the phone displays an SOS Call icon and requires you to swipe it before the call action proceeds. This adds deliberate confirmation.
  • Countdown: A countdown delays emergency actions, giving you time to cancel an accidental trigger or recognize what the phone is about to do.
  • Warning sound: The phone can play a warning sound during the SOS sequence. Consider whether that sound is appropriate for your circumstances before relying on the feature.

Configure these safeguards deliberately. A swipe requirement reduces accidental calls but adds a step when you are injured or unable to operate the screen. A countdown provides time to cancel but also delays the configured emergency action. The available controls and final behavior can differ by model, software version, and region, so read the wording shown on your own device.

Test without placing a real emergency call

Do not test by completing a live emergency call. Instead, open the Emergency SOS settings, verify the displayed trigger and safeguards, and rehearse the button motion without confirming a call. If your phone provides a cancel option during the countdown, learn where it appears. Tell household members or caregivers what the five-press gesture does so they do not mistake an accidental sequence for a fault.

Emergency sharing is a different feature

Emergency sharing is not the same as the physical-button Emergency SOS trigger and is not an accessibility shortcut. Configure it at Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency sharing.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Safety and emergency.
  3. Tap Emergency sharing.
  4. Choose the emergency contacts and review the information the feature can send.
  5. Enable optional attachments only if you understand what will be transmitted.

Samsung describes emergency sharing as messaging chosen contacts with location and low-battery details. Depending on the device and settings, you can also include pictures or audio. This makes it useful for informing trusted people, but it does not replace configuring Emergency SOS or checking whether your phone has the connectivity required for messages and calls.

What the Side button can do besides SOS

The Side button has its own customization screen, separate from accessibility shortcuts and Emergency SOS. Open Settings and search for Side button, or follow the path exposed by your model. Samsung’s support page, Customize the side button or Bixby button on your Galaxy phone, documents the model-dependent choices.

Double-press actions

On supported newer models, a double press can be assigned to options such as Camera, Flashlight, Magnifier, Voice Recorder, Samsung Notes, Samsung Capture, Modes and Routines, or an app. The list is not universal. If an option does not appear, your model or software build does not expose it through that screen.

Long-press actions

A long press can be assigned to a digital assistant, Bixby, or the power-off menu on supported phones. This setting affects the long-press behavior of the Side button; it does not change the five-press Emergency SOS sequence. Review both screens if you are changing button behavior for accessibility or safety.

Recover when TalkBack or Voice Assistant is difficult to disable

If TalkBack or Voice Assistant is active and ordinary touch navigation is difficult, Samsung says a volume-button shortcut may disable the screen reader when that shortcut has been enabled.

  1. Press and hold Volume up and Volume down together for at least three seconds.
  2. Watch or listen for a confirmation prompt. On first use, the phone may ask you to confirm the action.
  3. Confirm if prompted.

The recovery gesture works only when the relevant accessibility shortcut is enabled and supported. If nothing happens, use the screen reader’s navigation gestures to reach Settings > Accessibility and disable TalkBack or Voice Assistant there. Samsung’s instructions are in Use TalkBack or Voice Assistant on your Galaxy device.

Troubleshoot a missing or non-working shortcut

The menu name is different

Search Settings for Accessibility shortcuts, Direct access, or Advanced settings. Samsung has used different labels across Galaxy generations, and carrier software can alter the accessibility layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The gesture is not listed

Not every Galaxy phone supports every shortcut. Check the methods displayed under Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility shortcuts rather than assuming that a gesture documented for another model will work on yours. Software updates can also change labels or available actions.

The Accessibility button is not visible

Return to the Accessibility shortcut settings and confirm that the button method is enabled and an action is selected. Check whether your Navigation bar configuration allows the button to appear. If you use gesture navigation, the control may be placed differently from the layout shown in Samsung’s instructions.

Side + Volume up opens the wrong thing

Reopen the shortcut configuration and check whether multiple services are assigned. With multiple services, Samsung says the gesture opens Direct access so you can choose one. Remove unintended services if you want a single direct action.

Holding both volume buttons does nothing

Confirm that the Volume up + Volume down method is enabled, hold both keys for the full three seconds, and verify that a service is selected. If the method is absent, your model or software version may not support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emergency SOS does not behave as expected

Open Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS and read the current settings. A required swipe, countdown, or warning sound changes the sequence after the five Side-button presses. Do not infer behavior from another Galaxy phone; use the controls and wording shown on your device.

Build a reliable shortcut plan

Use this checklist after configuration and after major software updates:

  • Write down which accessibility service each gesture launches.
  • Test the Accessibility button from the Navigation bar.
  • Test Side + Volume up and confirm whether it opens a service directly or shows Direct access.
  • Hold both volume buttons for three seconds only if that method is enabled, and confirm the selected service activates.
  • Review Emergency SOS’s five-press trigger, swipe requirement, countdown, and warning sound.
  • Verify emergency contacts and the information enabled under Emergency sharing.
  • Check Side-button double-press and long-press actions so they do not conflict with how you expect the phone to respond.
  • Recheck the settings after an operating-system update, device reset, or carrier software change.

Keep the accessibility shortcut and emergency features conceptually separate: accessibility shortcuts help you operate the phone or launch an assistive service, while Emergency SOS and Emergency sharing communicate during a crisis. Knowing which gesture does what—and what confirmation follows it—is more important than memorizing a button sequence without checking its configuration.
