On compatible Galaxy phones, notification summaries are part of Samsung’s Notification highlights feature. Open Settings > Notifications > Notification highlights (or, on some software versions, Settings > Galaxy AI > Notification highlights), enable Summarize notifications, and choose supported apps. The result is a short recap of eligible conversational notifications, not a transcript of every alert. Because Samsung warns that “Summaries may not always be accurate,” open the original conversation whenever a date, amount, address, name, deadline, promise, or urgent instruction matters.
What Samsung’s notification summaries actually do
Samsung groups two different tools under Notification highlights:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Summarize notifications creates a brief recap of eligible conversational notifications.
- Prioritize notifications sorts selected alerts so important notifications appear separately from regular ones.
These controls are independent. You can summarize notifications without changing their priority, prioritize alerts without generating summaries, or use both. Prioritization is an organizational feature; summarization is a compression feature.

Samsung describes the feature as working with supported, conversational apps. Its US support information refers to notification history from the previous 24 hours, while a Canadian Galaxy S26 guide describes AI summaries based on unread notifications. The safest practical description is a short recap of eligible conversational notifications currently available to the feature.
#1 Best Overall
- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- NIGHTS, CAPTURED CLEARLY: From gigs to city lights, record and capture moments after dark with clarity using Nightography so your photos and videos stay crisp and clear on your Samsung Galaxy
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile phone, whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more⁴
- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
That distinction matters when a conversation contains several people, rapidly changing plans, attachments, links, reactions, or messages that depend on earlier context. A summary can help you decide whether to open an app, but it should not replace the original exchange when precision matters.
Turn on Galaxy AI notification summaries
Use the Notifications settings path
- Open Settings on your Galaxy phone.
- Tap Notifications.
- Select Notification highlights.
- Turn on Summarize notifications.
- Review the app-level controls and enable summarization for the apps you want to use.
You do not need to enable Prioritize notifications to receive summaries. Turn that switch on only if you also want Samsung to place selected alerts in a separate prioritized area.
Try the Galaxy AI path when the menu is elsewhere
Samsung also publishes this route for some devices and software versions: Settings > Galaxy AI > Notification highlights. The two paths are not necessarily contradictory. Samsung says menus and layouts can vary by device, software version, and app version, and regional documentation does not always use identical navigation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you cannot find the feature, use the Settings search field and search for Notification highlights. Then install any available system update and search again. A missing menu can indicate that the phone, software build, region, or installed app is not supported rather than a disabled switch.
Choose which apps can be summarized
Notification highlights does not summarize every alert on the phone. Support is limited to compatible applications and conversational notifications. Samsung’s published examples include:
- WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business
- Facebook Messenger
- Google Messages and Samsung Messages
- Snapchat, Telegram, Discord, KakaoTalk, WeChat, and Signal
- Microsoft Teams
- TikTok and Instagram
This is an example list, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Samsung can change supported apps, and availability can differ by country or software release. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications and inspect the apps shown on your own phone. If an app does not offer a summarization control there, assume its notifications are not currently eligible.

App support also does not mean every notification from that app will be summarized. A direct chat, group conversation, reaction, media alert, security notice, and promotional message can be treated differently. The feature is designed around conversational notification content, not around reproducing an app’s entire inbox.
Language and regional support
Samsung lists support for English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Polish, Vietnamese, and Hindi. Summaries generally follow the phone’s system language. A supported app in an unsupported language, or a language mismatch between the phone and the message, can affect whether a useful summary appears.
Device eligibility is also regional. Samsung Japan’s support information updated September 14, 2026 lists Galaxy S25 and S25 Ultra, Galaxy S26 models, Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Flip8, and Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Fold8 models. That is a regional list, not a universal promise that every model with one of those names has the feature in every market.
Samsung US troubleshooting describes Notification highlights on phones running One UI 8.5 or later, including the S26 series and newer models. Because the Japanese device list and US software guidance are not identical, check the Samsung support page for your country and the actual menus on your phone before treating a model as eligible.
What information the summary window uses
Samsung’s US support page says notification history used for summaries covers the previous 24 hours. A Canadian S26 guide instead describes summaries based on unread notifications. These descriptions can reflect differences in software, region, or documentation. They do not mean that every notification received during a day will be represented.
Recommended Free Tools
Notification history is useful for troubleshooting: it can show whether an alert arrived and help you understand which recent notifications were available during the summarization window. Samsung does not promise that notification history can reconstruct every detail omitted from a summary. If the summary leaves out a sentence, image, attachment, or earlier message, open the originating app.

Why a summary may not appear
Samsung US lists several conditions that affect summarization. They are product requirements stated by Samsung, not independent test results and not a guarantee that every eligible notification will be summarized.
The app is not supported
Check Settings > Notifications > App notifications and open the relevant app’s notification options. If summarization is not offered, the app may not be supported in your region or software version.
The conversation has not been active long enough
Samsung says a one-to-one chat notification must have arrived for at least three minutes. For a group chat, the stated interval is at least nine minutes. These thresholds describe when the feature may act; they do not require a summary to appear every time the interval is reached.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The notification is too short
Notifications containing fewer than 200 characters may not be summarized. A one-line “OK,” a reaction, or a short delivery update can therefore remain an ordinary notification even when the app itself is supported.
The screen or battery state blocks processing
Samsung says the screen must be off and the device must be charged to at least 30 percent. Notification summaries do not work in Power saving mode or when the battery is low. Lock the phone, leave it charging above the stated level, and allow the conversation to remain in the notification stream before testing again.
Software, app, or regional support differs
A phone can have Galaxy AI features while lacking this particular control. Update the phone and the messaging app, restart the device, and search Settings for “Notification highlights.” If the option remains absent, compare your exact model, country, carrier software, and One UI version with local Samsung support information.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the master switch. Go to Settings > Notifications > Notification highlights or Settings > Galaxy AI > Notification highlights and verify that Summarize notifications is on.
- Confirm the app switch. In the app-level list, enable summarization for the messaging or social app you are testing.
- Check the chat type. Use a supported one-to-one or group conversation rather than a system alert, marketing message, or standalone status notification.
- Allow enough time. Use Samsung’s stated minimums: three minutes for one-to-one chats and nine minutes for group chats.
- Check message length. Notifications under 200 characters may not qualify.
- Lock the screen and check power conditions. Keep the screen off, charge to at least 30 percent, and disable Power saving mode.
- Check notification history. Use it to confirm that notifications arrived and to see whether they fall within the recent window available on your software.
- Update and restart. Install available phone and app updates, restart the Galaxy, and test again.
- Check regional eligibility. If the menu is still missing, consult Samsung support for your market and exact model rather than assuming the feature is universally available.
How to read a summary safely
Samsung’s official troubleshooting guidance includes the warning: “Summaries may not always be accurate.” Treat the generated text as orientation: it can tell you that a conversation needs attention, but it is not the authoritative version of what another person wrote.
Open the original chat or app before acting on any consequential detail, especially:
- dates, times, deadlines, and appointment changes;
- prices, balances, quantities, invoices, or payment instructions;
- addresses, travel directions, phone numbers, and account details;
- people’s names, roles, permissions, or quoted statements;
- commitments, cancellations, consent, and legal or work instructions;
- urgent health, safety, security, or account-recovery information.
Read enough of the conversation to recover context, not just the single line that triggered the notification. Group chats in particular can contain replies to different messages, corrections, jokes, or attachments that a short recap cannot preserve.
What notification history can—and cannot—tell you
Notification history is a diagnostic aid. It can confirm that a notification reached the phone and can help you identify recent alerts that may have been available to Notification highlights. It is not a guaranteed archive of every source message or every piece of content removed from a summary.
If an important fact is absent from the recap, use the app’s own conversation view. The original app may contain edited messages, media, links, reactions, threaded replies, and older context that never appeared in the Android notification. Do not infer that a detail was never sent merely because it is missing from the summary.
Summarization versus prioritization
| Feature | Purpose | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Summarize notifications | Condense eligible conversational notifications | A short recap; not every alert and not a full transcript |
| Prioritize notifications | Sort selected alerts separately from regular notifications | Important alerts can appear above ordinary alerts |
Prioritization has its own quirks. Samsung says duplicate status-bar icons can appear because prioritized alerts are displayed separately above regular notifications. After a prioritized alert is viewed twice, it returns to regular status. Samsung also warns that keyword-based criteria can misclassify notifications. Those behaviors concern sorting, not missing text in a summary.

Privacy and cost boundaries
Samsung states that data used to analyze notification importance for the prioritization feature is processed on-device. That statement applies specifically to prioritization. Do not extend it automatically to notification summarization unless the documentation for your device and software explicitly says so.
Samsung says basic Galaxy AI features are free, while enhanced AI features and third-party AI services can have different terms or fees. Notification highlights is software on a compatible Galaxy device; it does not require a case, charger, paid app, or other accessory. Availability and terms can change, so review the notices shown on your phone and Samsung’s local documentation.
When an upgrade is the only practical option
If your existing phone has no Notification highlights menu after updates and the model is not listed as supported in your market, a newer compatible Galaxy device may be required. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 guide and regional support list make an S26-series phone a plausible example, but model names alone do not establish eligibility everywhere. Verify the exact regional model, One UI version, carrier software, and supported apps before buying.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Changing phones will not make an unsupported messaging app eligible. Compatibility has several layers: device, software release, region, language, and app. Check each layer before treating an upgrade as the solution.
A daily habit that prevents mistakes
- Use the summary to triage which conversations need attention.
- Open the original app for anything consequential or ambiguous.
- Check attachments, links, reactions, and replies when context matters.
- Use notification history only to confirm recent delivery, not as a guaranteed transcript.
- Keep summaries disabled for apps whose notifications contain information you routinely need verbatim, if the app-level controls allow that choice.
This workflow preserves the convenience of a quick recap without treating generated text as a primary record. The feature is most useful for deciding what to read next; the source conversation remains the place to verify what was actually said.
