DeX provides a desktop-style workspace, but it does not make the tablet a Windows or macOS computer: Samsung says certain specialized software may still require a laptop.
What DeX does on the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra
Samsung describes DeX on the Tab S12 Ultra as a PC-like desktop. You can arrange apps in movable windows, snap them side by side, and use up to four workspaces. Workspace previews appear at the top of the tablet screen, and you can move apps between workspaces or remove them. One UI 9 also supports two-way and three-way split views.

The tablet has a 14.6-inch display, giving you room to work directly on the device. Samsung Ireland lists the Wi-Fi model at about 692 g before accessories; regional models and specifications can vary. Samsung’s product page also says a connected external display can expand the workspace.

- Open DeX. Use the DeX control available on the tablet. Samsung confirms DeX support for this model, but the exact menu path is not established here; consult the current manual for your region and software version rather than relying on an older settings sequence.
- Add a keyboard for regular typing. Samsung lists a compatible Pro Keyboard with an integrated trackpad and a Book Cover Keyboard Slim. Both are accessories to buy separately. Confirm the exact compatible model or SKU in your market before ordering.
- Keep the S Pen for touch-first work. Samsung includes the S Pen in the box, making it useful for handwriting, annotations, and sketching alongside keyboard input. Samsung’s listed box contents also include a USB-C cable, ejector pin, and quick-start guide; the product page does not list a charger.
- Decide whether you need a larger display. DeX can expand the workspace to a connected external display, according to Samsung’s S12 Ultra product page. Check the tablet’s current manual and firmware information for the supported connection method before buying a monitor, cable, or hub. Samsung’s published resolution controls for another tablet model do not establish the S12 Ultra’s exact display behavior.
- Choose pointing accessories to suit your setup. The Pro Keyboard’s trackpad may be sufficient; a separate mouse is optional if you prefer one. Samsung’s older general DeX documentation describes mouse and keyboard peripherals, but it is not current, model-specific confirmation of every S12 Ultra accessory combination.
Check whether your work will fit
The deciding question is not whether DeX looks like a desktop, but whether the apps and workflows you need work properly on Android. Samsung names Photoshop, Notability, and Clip Studio Paint as examples of premium apps, while warning that a laptop may still be required for certain specialized software.

- Applications: Check that each essential tool has an Android version with the features, account access, and file handling you need. Do not assume a desktop edition’s features are all present in its Android counterpart.
- Browser-based work: Test the actual web tools you depend on, including sign-in, file uploads and downloads, and any browser-specific functions.
- Files and peripherals: Confirm that your storage, printers, specialist equipment, or other connected devices work with your Android apps and tablet setup.
- Typing and screen space: Decide whether the tablet display and keyboard are comfortable for your normal sessions or whether you need a separate monitor and pointing device.
- Cost and portability: Compare the tablet with the separately sold keyboard and any display peripherals you need against a suitable laptop. The Wi-Fi tablet alone weighs about 692 g according to Samsung Ireland; the full kit weighs more.
If a required desktop-only application or peripheral has no workable Android alternative, keep a conventional laptop for that part of the job. DeX is best treated as a laptop substitute for compatible workflows, not as a guarantee that every computer task will transfer.
What an external monitor changes
A monitor is an optional way to gain more workspace, not a universal requirement for DeX. Tom’s Guide’s October 2026 review observed that an external monitor made its desktop-like taskbar experience more useful, while also reporting limitations in DeX. That is a reviewer assessment of the tested software and setup, not proof that every S12 Ultra user needs a monitor.

Before buying a USB-C display adapter or hub, verify compatibility with the S12 Ultra and the monitor’s inputs. Samsung’s general older DeX setup guidance discusses HDMI displays and peripherals, but its dated device information does not establish the precise connection requirements for this tablet.
Battery claims: read the conditions
Samsung advertises up to 23 hours of video playback for the Tab S12 Ultra. That is a manufacturer playback claim, not a promise of a full workday in DeX. Tom’s Guide recorded 11 hours and 31 minutes in a continuous Wi-Fi web-surfing test with the display set to 150 nits. These figures reflect different tasks and test conditions, so they are not directly comparable.

Which Tab S12 Ultra details may vary by market
Samsung’s U.S. launch announcement describes the tablet as running Android 17 with One UI 9 and gives U.S.-specific launch and promotion details. Availability, connectivity, accessory SKUs, and pricing can differ by region and over time. Samsung also states that the device is eligible for up to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates; check Samsung’s local product information for terms that apply to your market.
