Empty the relevant Trash afterward if you need the space permanently. Use Optimize now for a broad phone-health check, but use Storage when you need to decide exactly which personal files to delete.
Samsung’s menus vary by Galaxy model, carrier, country, software version and app version. If your screen says “Device Care,” places Storage under a different heading, or shows different categories, look for the equivalent Storage, Memory or Trash entry rather than assuming a missing feature.

The fastest safe cleanup path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device care (sometimes shown as Device Care).
- Tap Storage.
- Choose a category, such as Images, Videos, Audio files, Documents, Downloads or Installation files.
- Review the items. Touch and hold a file to select it, or tap All when that option is available.
- Tap Delete or Delete all, then confirm Move to Trash.
- Open the appropriate Trash, review its contents, and choose Empty followed by Delete when you are certain the files are no longer needed.
Deleting to Trash gives you a review point. Emptying Trash is the permanent step and cannot be undone, so do not skip the review.
What Optimize now does—and what it does not do
From Settings > Device care, Optimize now runs a broad maintenance check. Samsung’s 2026 support guidance says it can identify apps using excessive battery power, clear unneeded memory items, delete unnecessary files, scan for malware and close background apps.

That one-tap action is not a guarantee that every personal photo, video or document is safe to remove. Device Care cannot know whether a screenshot is a keepsake, whether a downloaded video is needed offline, or whether a document is your only copy. Use Optimize now as a health check; use Storage for item-level decisions.
Inspect files in Device Care Storage
Choose a category you can recognize
Storage presents the file groups available on your particular Galaxy. Common entries include Images, Videos, Audio files, Documents, Downloads and Installation files. Some phones also show other categories or system-related files. The list is model- and software-dependent, so two Galaxy devices can display different labels.
Start with files whose purpose is obvious. Old downloads, duplicate screenshots, exported videos and installation packages are easier to verify than a broad “other” or system category. If you are unsure what a file is, leave it in place until you can identify the app or account that created it.

Select individual files or a complete list
Open a category and touch and hold a file to enter selection mode. Select additional files one at a time, or use All if the screen offers it. Check names, dates, sizes and thumbnails before deleting. A large file is not automatically unnecessary: it may be an original recording, an offline map, a work document or the only copy of a family photo.
Tap Delete for the selected items or Delete all for the category. Confirm Move to Trash when prompted. The exact confirmation wording can change with the Galaxy’s software and with the app that owns the files.

Empty Trash only after a final review
Moving an item to Trash usually removes it from normal folders while preserving a recovery window. If the Storage total does not fall as much as expected, the deleted data may still be occupying space in Trash.
- Open the relevant Trash from the screen where it is provided.
- Inspect the list for anything you may want to restore.
- Choose Empty.
- Confirm Delete to permanently remove the contents.
Permanent deletion is irreversible. Treat Empty as a separate decision from the initial cleanup, especially when deleting photos, videos, recordings or documents.

- Old downloads: Remove installers, PDFs, images or archives that you have already used or stored elsewhere.
- Duplicate screenshots: Keep the final version and discard repeated captures.
- Exported media: Check that the copy exists in your backup or destination before removing the export from the phone.
- Installation files: Delete package files after the app has installed successfully and you do not need the package for another installation.
- Unclear categories: Investigate the file or its owning app before touching a broad “other” or system-related group.
Keep anything that is not clearly expendable. If a file is important and you cannot confirm another copy, preserve it first by backing it up or moving it to supported removable storage.
How to deal with “Other” or system-related storage
“Other” is not a universal junk folder. Depending on the Galaxy model and software, it can include app-created files, downloaded content, temporary data and system-related items. Device Care’s Storage screen lets you browse categories and choose files; it does not turn every item in that aggregate category into a safe one-tap deletion.
Open any available subcategory and identify the files before acting. For space used by a particular app, use that app’s own storage controls rather than deleting unfamiliar system files. If the category remains large after ordinary cleanup, check Trash and review large media or downloads before concluding that the remaining space is removable.

Storage and Memory are different
Storage is the phone’s long-term space for personal files, apps and their data. Memory is working RAM used by running processes. Freeing RAM does not delete photos, videos or documents.

Samsung describes this as stopping selected background apps and freeing RAM. It is not the main screen for deleting personal files.
If an app must continue running in the background, add it under Excluded apps when your model provides that setting. Excluding an app can reduce the memory reclaimed by Clean now, but it prevents Device Care from stopping that app’s background activity.
Clear an app’s cache without resetting it
For temporary files belonging to one app, Samsung documents this path: Settings > Apps > choose an app > Storage > Clear cache. Cache clearing removes temporary data and is distinct from deleting personal files through Device Care Storage.
Clear data is a more destructive control. It resets the app’s stored data and requires confirmation. Depending on the app, that can remove sign-ins, settings, downloaded or offline content and other locally stored information. Do not present Clear data as an equivalent “junk cleanup” button; use it only when you intentionally want to reset the app and have preserved anything you need.

Move large files to a microSD card when supported
A compatible microSD card can preserve files while reducing internal-storage use, but removable-storage support and capacity limits depend on the exact Galaxy model. Verify the model’s specifications before buying or inserting a card.
Samsung’s documented workflow uses My Files:
- Open My Files.
- Browse to the files you want to retain.
- Select one or more files.
- Tap Move.
- Choose SD card.
- Select or create the destination folder.
- Tap Move here.
Moving a file changes its location; it does not create a second backup. Keep the card safe and maintain another copy for irreplaceable content. Many apps cannot be moved to an SD card, even when the phone accepts one, so this method is best for personal files such as photos, videos, audio and documents.
Which Device Care action should you choose?

When cleanup does not free as much space as expected
The files are still in Trash
Deleting to Trash changes the file’s normal location but may not release all storage until Trash is emptied. Recheck the relevant Trash and permanently delete only after reviewing it.
You used Memory instead of Storage
Clean now in the Memory section stops background apps and frees RAM. It does not remove personal files. Return to Device care > Storage for photos, downloads, videos and documents.

App caches are temporary and often smaller than the app’s stored data, downloads or media. Inspect the app’s Storage screen and clear data only when you deliberately accept the reset and have protected needed content.

The Storage screen uses different labels
Menu names and layouts vary by carrier, country, model, software version and app version. Look for equivalent entries named Storage, Memory, Trash, Diagnostics or Unused apps. A different label does not mean the phone lacks cleanup controls.
A file cannot be moved to an SD card
The model may not support removable storage, the card may not be available to My Files, or the app may restrict moving its data. Use the SD-card workflow for personal files and confirm the card is recognized before troubleshooting the app itself.
Model and software differences to expect
Samsung does not present an identical Device Care interface on every Galaxy phone. Wireless-provider customization, country, Galaxy model, Android or One UI version and app version can change menu names, category availability and the location of Trash. Some devices expose Diagnostics or Unused apps, while others place those tools elsewhere.

Use the closest matching path on your phone and read each confirmation screen. The governing distinction remains the same: Optimize now is broad maintenance, Storage is for reviewing files, Memory is for RAM, and Trash must be emptied for permanent removal.
