To make S3 videos appear as a YouTube Live playlist, an encoder or playback process must read and sequence the files, encode them as a live feed, and send that feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. You can run that process on EC2, or evaluate an AWS managed-media route if its inputs and outputs fit your requirements.
Choose the architecture before you configure anything
There are two distinct AWS patterns to consider. An EC2-hosted player and encoder can read and sequence your source files, then send a live feed directly to YouTube. Separately, AWS documents a reference live-streaming architecture that uses MediaLive, S3 for encoded segments, and CloudFront for delivery to viewers. That reference architecture is not necessarily a turnkey S3-files-to-YouTube playlist.

| Approach | What it does | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| EC2 playlist and encoder | A process on your EC2 instance reads S3 objects, sequences or loops them, encodes the output, and sends it to YouTube. | The selected tool’s S3 access, playlist syntax, looping and restart behavior, and its YouTube output configuration. |
| AWS managed-media route | AWS’s reference live architecture uses MediaLive to ingest and transcode a feed, stores encoded segments in S3, and uses CloudFront to deliver to viewers. | Whether the current MediaLive input and output configuration supports your intended S3 files, playlist behavior, and YouTube destination. |
MediaLive documentation lists MP4 pulled from S3 and HLS pulled from S3 as supported input types. That is a separate capability from the reference architecture’s use of S3 to store encoded segments. Confirm the current input and output configuration before choosing this route.

Prepare the S3 files and EC2 access
Keep source objects private
Store the clips in a private S3 bucket and give the EC2 playback process appropriately scoped access through an AWS identity. Do not make a private bucket public simply to let a playlist fetch its files. The precise identity configuration and permissions depend on your implementation; verify them against current AWS security documentation rather than copying a broad, unreviewed policy.

Choose a player and confirm its playlist behavior
Select a playback and encoding tool that can access your S3 objects, directly through an authenticated AWS client or by staging the files on EC2. Confirm that it can play your chosen formats and sequence or loop the clips as you intend. Playlist syntax, crossfades, handling of a missing or unreadable file, looping, and restart behavior depend on the tool. The AWS and YouTube documentation cited for this workflow does not establish one universal playlist format or a ready-made EC2 command, so test the selected implementation instead of relying on an unverified command.
Connect the EC2 encoder to YouTube Live
- Create or open the live stream: In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event or stream you plan to use. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes entering both values in the encoder.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Limit who and what can access it, and reset it in Live Control Room if you believe it has been exposed.
- Configure the encoder: Set the output destination to YouTube’s stream URL and provide the key. Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on YouTube’s current encoder settings table for that format and the available upload capacity. Do not apply one bitrate as a universal setting: YouTube’s recommendation varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Set the transmission mode and keyframes: YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS for the relevant ingest mode, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. H.264 is an available video codec. Check YouTube’s current settings table when configuring the specific encoder.
- Start a private test: Start the playlist process and check that YouTube Live Control Room receives the signal and displays a usable preview before you publish the event. Confirm that the clips progress in the right order and that the audio and video remain in sync.
- Go live and monitor: Watch the encoder and YouTube preview for connection or quality problems, and verify that the playlist advances as expected. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend configuring and testing the encoder ahead of time, monitoring audio and video quality, and checking that local archive files are growing if you are recording one.
Test the full playlist and plan for recovery
Test the entire workflow—not just whether one S3 object can play. Check the transitions between clips, the end-of-list behavior, and what happens if an object cannot be read or the encoder process stops. The exact recovery and restart procedures are tool-specific; establish and test them on your EC2 setup before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive

YouTube recommends testing the setup and stream content before the event. Keep a local recording if you need an archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Its help guidance recommends keeping a local archive backup, and the YouTube archive should not be treated as a replacement for the original video objects retained in S3.

- The S3 URL plays in a browser but the broadcast is not live: A file URL is not itself a YouTube broadcast. Confirm that an encoder or supported live-media input is reading the content and transmitting an encoded feed to YouTube.
- The EC2 process cannot read a private object: Check the process’s AWS identity, its access to the relevant bucket and objects, and the object path. Avoid solving an access problem by making the bucket public.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the encoder uses the correct stream URL and key, that the key has not been reset, and that the configured output matches the selected YouTube ingest mode. Preview the incoming signal in Live Control Room.
- Video quality or stability is poor: Compare the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR setting, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current recommendations for that format. Also check that available network upload capacity can support the chosen output.
- The playlist stops, repeats unexpectedly, or skips a clip: Inspect the player or playlist tool’s file-access, sequencing, looping, and restart settings. These behaviors are implementation-specific, so reproduce the issue in a full test rather than assuming a universal playlist rule.
- You need a complete archive: Record locally and check that the recording file is growing. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured automatically.
Keep the videos eligible for YouTube Live
Using a prerecorded playlist does not remove the need to follow YouTube’s rules. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements before broadcasting. The AWS and YouTube encoder setup documentation does not establish that a particular playlist is rights-cleared or eligible for monetization. Keep the original S3 files as your source material and do not assume an automated archive replaces them.
