Rowan is Rocket Money’s text-based financial assistant. After you activate it in the Rocket Money app and connect eligible accounts, you can use your phone’s messaging app to ask about spending, correct transaction categories, check budget balances, monitor recurring charges, and start certain subscription or bill-help workflows. It reads information already available in your Rocket Money account; it is not a standalone ledger and cannot move your money.
What Rowan can do by text
Rowan is an AI-powered financial assistant included with Rocket Money’s Premium+ plan, according to the Rocket Money Help Center. It communicates through text messages while using information from your Rocket Money profile and connected financial accounts. That makes it useful when you want a quick answer without opening a dashboard, but it also means the quality of an answer depends on the accounts and transactions that Rocket Money can access.

The main uses documented by Rocket Money are:
- Analyzing spending and explaining patterns in your transactions.
- Showing weekly spending reports and larger spending categories.
- Creating or adjusting budgets and reporting how much remains.
- Monitoring recurring bills, subscriptions, free trials, and increased recurring charges.
- Guiding you through eligible subscription cancellation or bill-negotiation requests.
- Organizing transaction data by recategorizing items, ignoring transactions, or creating categorization rules.
Rowan does not replace account setup. You must first activate the feature in Rocket Money and connect eligible financial accounts. Once that is done, the text conversation is a convenient interface over the data already held in your account.
What you need before sending your first text
- An active Rocket Money account with Rowan access. The Help Center identifies Rowan as a Premium+ feature.
- The Rocket Money mobile app, where activation takes place.
- At least one eligible financial account connected to Rocket Money if you want account-based spending, balance, bill, or subscription answers.
- A phone number that can receive and send text messages through your normal messaging app.
- Recent, usable transaction data. Rowan can only analyze information that Rocket Money has received from a connected account.
Eligibility is not universal. The published material does not provide a complete country, bank, or account-type matrix, so check the current in-app availability and connection options for your accounts instead of assuming every institution will work.

How to activate Rowan and connect accounts
Activation happens in the Rocket Money app; the ongoing conversation happens in your phone’s messaging app.
- Open Rocket Money and sign in. Use the account that contains the budgets, transactions, and recurring charges you want Rowan to analyze.
- Find the Rowan activation option. Follow the current in-app prompts to enable the assistant. Labels can change as Rocket Money updates the app, so use the Rowan or assistant entry shown in your account rather than an old screenshot.
- Connect eligible financial accounts. Complete the account-linking flow and choose the institutions and accounts you want included. Review the account names and masked details before continuing.
- Allow the connection to finish syncing. Rowan’s answers are based on the information that appears in Rocket Money. If an account or transaction is missing there, a text request cannot recover it.
- Open your phone’s messaging app. Use the Rowan conversation created during activation. Send a plain-language question; you do not need a special command format.
- Check the first response against your Rocket Money account. Confirm that the relevant account, date range, category, or recurring charge is included before making a budget decision.
If the activation option or texting feature is absent, do not assume that reinstalling the app will create access. Plan inclusion, account eligibility, platform support, and feature availability can change; verify the current status in Rocket Money’s app and Help Center.
Ask Rowan where your money went
Start with a defined time period. A month-to-date question gives a different result from a calendar-month or weekly question, so include the period whenever the answer matters.

When Rowan explains a pattern, treat it as an analysis of the transactions in Rocket Money, not as a complete view of every payment you have ever made. Cash purchases, an unconnected account, pending activity, or a transaction that has not yet synchronized may not appear in the result.
Correct a transaction that Rowan classified incorrectly
A wrong category can distort both a spending report and a budget. Rowan supports three corrective requests:
- Recategorize a transaction: identify the merchant, date, and intended category.
- Ignore a transaction: ask Rowan to exclude a particular item when it should not count toward your personal spending analysis.
- Create a categorization rule: use a recurring merchant pattern so future matching transactions are handled consistently.
For a precise correction, write the merchant and date rather than saying only “fix that charge.” For example: Recategorize the March 12 transaction at [merchant] as transportation. After Rowan confirms the change, run the relevant spending question again and check whether the corrected item now appears in the intended category. A rule can affect future matching transactions, so review the proposed scope before accepting it.

Use Rowan to create and maintain a budget
Rowan can help create a budget, adjust an existing amount, suggest a category based on recurring spending, and tell you how much remains to spend. The most reliable workflow is to separate setup from checking progress.

- Ask Rowan to create a budget for a named category, such as dining, transport, or entertainment.
- Provide the amount and period if Rowan asks for them.
- Confirm the category wording and amount in the response.
- Ask how much remains to spend so you have a baseline for the current period.
Adjust an existing budget
Tell Rowan the category and the new amount, then review its confirmation. If your request is ambiguous, specify whether you mean a monthly limit or another period. Do not infer the new limit from a partial response; confirm the exact number Rowan records.
Check what is left
Use questions such as How much do I have left in my grocery budget? or How much is left in my overall budget? Include the period when you are near a boundary, for example, “this month.” If the result seems wrong, inspect recent transactions for a category error before changing the budget itself.
Use recurring spending to choose categories
Rowan can suggest a budget category from recurring spending. Treat the suggestion as a starting point: a recurring charge may be a subscription, a bill, or a business expense that belongs in a different personal category. Confirm the category before using it to set a limit.
Track bills, subscriptions, and free trials
Ask Rowan for upcoming bills or subscriptions when you need a forward-looking list, or ask about a particular recurring charge when you are investigating a change.

Rowan can monitor recurring charges, track free trials, and send reminders or alerts. It cannot guarantee that every merchant labels a charge consistently or that an unconnected account will appear. A “subscription” result is therefore a monitoring aid, not proof that a merchant’s contract has been canceled or renewed.

Request subscription cancellation or bill-negotiation help
For eligible tasks, Rowan can guide you through canceling a subscription or starting a bill-negotiation request. These are guided workflows rather than a promise that every cancellation will complete automatically.
- Identify the exact subscription or bill in your text request.
- Answer Rowan’s follow-up questions, which may be needed to identify the account, service, or request type.
- Read the proposed next step and any confirmation details carefully.
- Approve the request only when the merchant, service, and intended action are correct.
- Keep the merchant’s own confirmation or reference information. Rowan’s guidance does not replace checking that the provider actually stopped billing or accepted a negotiation request.
Do not describe these workflows as universal cancellation automation. The documented capability is assistance with eligible requests, and eligibility can depend on the service and account information available to Rocket Money.
What Rowan can read—and what it cannot change
Rocket Money’s security documentation describes the account connection as read-only: “We can look. We can’t touch.” Through Plaid, the connection requests the ability to read transactions. Rowan may access transaction information, account names and types, masked last-four digits, and balances that are available through the connected account.

This boundary matters when you ask, “Can Rowan pay this bill?” A text response can provide information or guide an eligible workflow, but the connected-account permission itself does not authorize money movement, payments, transfers, card issuance, or account changes.
Rowan versus a conventional budgeting dashboard
Rowan is most useful when the choice is between typing a question and navigating through several screens. A dashboard remains better when you need to inspect many transactions at once, compare visual trends, or audit every line item.

Accuracy checks that prevent misleading answers
- Check the date range. “This month,” “last week,” and a custom period are not interchangeable.
- Check connected accounts. A total cannot include an account that Rocket Money does not have access to.
- Review categories. Correct a merchant before using its amount to set or judge a budget.
- Distinguish pending and posted activity. If Rocket Money displays a transaction differently from your bank, use the account record as the reference for what has synchronized.
- Verify recurring charges. A repeated merchant name may not represent a subscription, and a changed merchant descriptor can make a recurring service harder to recognize.
- Confirm high-impact changes. Before accepting a budget adjustment or guided cancellation request, read the exact amount, service, and date in Rowan’s confirmation.
These checks are especially important when Rowan’s answer drives a decision such as canceling a service or spending the last amount remaining in a category.

Common problems and practical fixes
Rowan does not answer a spending question
Confirm that Rowan is activated, the text is being sent to the conversation created during setup, and at least one relevant account is connected. Rewrite a vague request with a date range and category, such as How much did I spend on transportation from April 1 through April 15?

Look in Rocket Money first. If the account is not listed or the transaction has not appeared there, Rowan has no source record to analyze. Check the connection status and allow the account data to update before asking again. Do not fill the gap by assuming Rowan can see every bank or account type.
The category total looks wrong
Ask Rowan to show the transactions behind the category, identify the mislabeled merchant, and recategorize it or create a rule. Then repeat the original question. Ignoring a transaction is appropriate only when you intentionally want it excluded from the analysis.
A subscription reminder is unexpected
Ask Rowan which recurring charge produced the reminder and inspect the merchant, amount, and timing. If the item is not yours or is no longer recurring, correct the record rather than assuming the reminder itself changed the merchant’s billing.
A cancellation or negotiation request stops for questions
Answer the follow-up with the precise service and account details Rowan requests. If the task is not eligible, use the merchant’s own support channel; the documented Rowan feature is guided help for eligible requests, not a universal replacement for the provider.

Privacy and account-safety boundaries
Use Rowan for questions that can be answered from connected financial data, but avoid sending unnecessary secrets in a text message. The documented connection is designed to read transaction and account information through Plaid, not to authorize money movement. Keep your phone and messaging account protected because anyone who can access the conversation may see the financial questions and responses in it.
Before connecting an account, review the institution and account details shown in the Rocket Money linking flow. After connecting, periodically remove accounts you no longer want included and review the account list when a response seems incomplete. These are practical ways to keep the assistant’s data scope aligned with the accounts you actually manage.
What the published figures do—and do not—tell you
The Google Play listing displayed more than 10 million downloads, a 4.5-star rating, and 139,000 reviews in 2026. Store metrics change over time, so they describe the listing at that point rather than a permanent performance guarantee.
The Rowan homepage also presents an average guessed subscription spending figure of $86 among 1,000 people surveyed by C+R Research. The page does not state the survey year in the available material, so treat it as an undated survey figure, not as a current national estimate or a prediction of your own subscription costs.

- Ask for a weekly spend report and note any category that is unexpectedly high.
- Open the underlying transactions for that category and correct obvious misclassifications.
- Ask how much remains in the categories you are actively managing.
- Check upcoming bills, subscriptions, and free trials.
- Investigate any recurring charge that increased and decide whether you need a guided cancellation or bill-negotiation request.
- Return to the Rocket Money account when you need a full visual audit or when a text answer does not contain enough transaction detail.
The result is a text-first routine for questions and reminders, paired with the app for setup and verification. Rowan’s value comes from making connected-account data easier to query; it does not remove the need to maintain accurate connections, categories, and budget definitions.
