How to Use Roku Private Listening With Headphones or the Roku App

Roku private listening is now labeled Headphone Mode. The most widely compatible method is the Roku mobile app: connect your phone or tablet and Roku player or TV to the same Wii network, connect wired or Bluetooth headphones to the mobile device, open Remote, and tap the Headphone icon. Depending on your Roku model, you can instead pair Bluetooth headphones directly with Roku or plug wired headphones into a compatible Roku voice remote.

What Roku private listening does

Headphone Mode sends the Roku program’s audio to headphones instead of the television’s speakers. It is useful when someone else is sleeping, when you need to keep room volume low, or when you want to listen without disturbing people nearby. The feature is software- and hardware-dependent: the mobile-app method works only when the Roku device supports mobile Headphone Mode, direct Bluetooth works only on selected Roku models, and only some voice remotes have a headphone jack.

Roku’s current support terminology is Headphone Mode, although menus and older instructions may call the same feature private listening. The listening path determines what you need:

  • Roku mobile app: a compatible Roku device, an iOS or Android phone or tablet on the same Wii network, and headphones connected to that mobile device.
  • Direct Bluetooth: a Roku model with Bluetooth Headphone Mode and Bluetooth headphones that support Bluetooth 4.2 or later.
  • Voice remote headphone jack: a compatible Roku voice remote with a built-in 3.5 mm jack and wired headphones or earbuds.

Method 1: Use the Roku mobile app

The app is generally the best starting point because it supports either wired or Bluetooth headphones and can support several mobile listeners at once. It does require a phone or tablet to remain connected to the Roku over Wii.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before you start

  • Install or update the latest Roku remote app for iOS or Android.
  • Connect the phone or tablet and the Roku player or TV to the same wireless network. A guest network, cellular connection, or different home network can prevent discovery.
  • Connect the app to the Roku device you intend to control.
  • For wired listening, plug headphones into the phone or tablet. For wireless listening, pair the Bluetooth headphones with the phone or tablet through that device’s normal Bluetooth settings.

Turn Headphone Mode on

  1. Open the Roku app.
  2. Tap Remote.
  3. Tap the Headphone icon.
  4. Set a comfortable, safe volume before putting on the headphones.

Audio should move to the connected headphones while the television picture continues normally. Tap the Headphone icon again to turn the mode off. With wired headphones, plugging them into or unplugging them from the mobile device while the Remote screen is open also toggles Headphone Mode.

How many people can use the app?

Roku says up to four mobile devices can use Headphone Mode at the same time. Each listener needs the Roku app connected to the Roku and headphones connected to that listener’s own phone or tablet. This is the largest simultaneous-listener option documented for Roku’s private-listening features.

There is an important interaction with the voice remote: when headphones are connected to a compatible voice remote, mobile Headphone Mode on connected phones is deactivated. Use either the remote’s headphone connection or the phones’ app connections rather than expecting both to remain active together.

Method 2: Pair Bluetooth headphones directly with Roku

Direct pairing removes the phone or tablet from the audio path, but it is limited to selected Roku hardware. Your headphones must support Bluetooth 4.2 or greater.

Roku models that support direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode

Roku lists these compatible families and models:

  • Streambar SE
  • Streambar
  • Streambar Pro
  • Smart Soundbar
  • Ultra models 4800, 4802, and 4850
  • Ultra LT model 4801
  • Selected 2025 Roku TV models
  • Plus Series TV
  • Pro Series TV

Roku lists the following devices as not supporting direct Bluetooth Headphone Mode: Express, Premiere, Streaming Stick 4K, and Streaming Stick 4K+. If your product is not in the compatible list, use the mobile app or a voice remote with a headphone jack when those options are available for your setup.

Pair for the first time

  1. Press the Home button on the Roku remote.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Remotes & devices.
  4. Choose Wireless headphones.
  5. Select Add new wireless headphones.
  6. Put the headphones into Bluetooth pairing mode. Follow the headphone manufacturer’s pairing control rather than merely switching them on.
  7. Wait for the scan to show the headphones, then select their name.

After the initial pairing, return to Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones whenever you need to reconnect them. You can adjust volume from the headphones or a compatible Roku remote. Play, pause, and other media controls depend on the particular headphone model, so a headset’s buttons may not provide every Roku command.

Direct Bluetooth listener limits

Roku’s direct-pairing instructions document the compatible hardware and pairing process but do not publish a simultaneous-listener number for this mode. Do not assume that adding several Bluetooth headsets will work; the documented multi-listener allowance applies to the mobile app, not automatically to direct Roku Bluetooth.

Method 3: Plug headphones into a Roku voice remote

Some Roku devices are supplied with, or support, a voice remote that has a built-in headphone jack. Insert wired earbuds or headphones into that jack to activate Headphone Mode. This is the simplest setup when the appropriate remote is already in your hand: no phone pairing and no Bluetooth setup are required.

Roku says only one Roku voice remote can be connected and use Headphone Mode at a time. A voice remote without a headphone jack cannot provide this feature; use the app or direct Bluetooth if the Roku hardware supports one of those methods. Connecting headphones to the remote also deactivates mobile Headphone Mode on phones connected through the app.

Which method should you choose?

Method Roku compatibility Headphone connection Simultaneous listeners Phone or tablet required Audio-delay controls
Roku mobile app Roku devices that support mobile Headphone Mode; availability is model dependent Wired or Bluetooth headphones connected to each mobile device Up to four mobile devices Yes App includes Adjust audio delay and an Advanced adjustment option
Direct Bluetooth Selected Streambar, Smart Soundbar, Ultra, Ultra LT, 2025 Roku TV, Plus Series TV, and Pro Series TV models Bluetooth 4.2 or later headphones paired to Roku Roku does not state a simultaneous-listener limit for this mode No Roku’s pairing instructions do not describe an audio-delay adjustment
Voice remote jack Roku setups using a voice remote with a built-in headphone jack Wired headphones plugged into the remote One voice remote No No separate delay control is described for the remote-jack method

Choose the app when several people need private audio, when your Roku model lacks direct Bluetooth, or when you want the documented audio-delay adjustment. Choose direct Bluetooth when your Roku is on the compatible list and you want to leave the phone out of the connection. Choose the voice remote when a single listener has wired headphones and the remote has its own jack.

Check compatibility before buying headphones

Headphone connection type matters more than the word “wireless.” A Bluetooth headset can connect to the mobile app route because it pairs with the phone or tablet, even when the Roku itself cannot pair Bluetooth headphones. For direct Roku pairing, the headset must support Bluetooth 4.2 or greater and the Roku must be one of the listed models. Wired headphones can work with the mobile app or a voice remote that has a jack.

  • Identify the Roku model: look at the device label, the packaging, or the Roku interface’s system information before relying on direct Bluetooth.
  • Check the headphone connection: wired headphones need the correct plug for the phone, tablet, or remote; Bluetooth headphones need pairing mode and, for direct Roku pairing, Bluetooth 4.2 or newer.
  • Decide how many listeners you need: the app documents up to four mobile devices; a headphone-jack remote documents one remote listener.
  • Keep the phone route in mind: headphones paired to a phone are not automatically paired to the Roku. The Roku app remains the bridge for private listening.

Troubleshoot a missing icon or silent headphones

The Headphone icon is missing in the Roku app

  1. Update the Roku mobile app to the latest version for your iOS or Android device.
  2. Confirm that the app is connected to the intended Roku device, not another Roku on the network.
  3. Verify that the phone or tablet and Roku are on the same Wii network.
  4. Check whether the Roku model supports mobile Headphone Mode. A model that cannot use the feature will not gain it through an app update.

The app shows Headphone Mode but there is no sound

  • Check the phone or tablet’s volume and mute state.
  • For wired headphones, remove and firmly reinsert the plug.
  • For Bluetooth headphones, confirm they are paired and selected as the phone’s active audio output.
  • Return to the Roku app’s Remote screen and make sure it is controlling the Roku you are watching.
  • Tap the Headphone icon off and on again after correcting the connection.

Audio is out of sync with the picture

Use the adjustment built into the Roku app:

  1. Activate Headphone Mode in the app.
  2. Open the gear or Controls menu.
  3. Choose Adjust audio delay.
  4. Select Get started and follow the on-screen adjustment.
  5. Use Advanced adjustment for finer tuning if the basic correction does not align the sound.

This control is documented for the app route. Roku’s direct-Bluetooth and voice-remote instructions do not describe an equivalent delay menu.

The sound stutters or pops

With wired headphones, disconnect and reinsert the plug so the connector seats fully. With Bluetooth headphones, place them back into pairing mode and pair them again. If the problem occurs only with one headset, test another compatible pair to distinguish a headphone connection problem from a Roku or app problem.

Important Streambar limitation

On Streambar products, Headphone Mode applies to the Streambar’s built-in streaming player. It does not carry audio from external consoles, Blu-ray players, cable or satellite boxes, or Bluetooth audio sources such as a phone or computer. In other words, selecting Headphone Mode does not turn every input connected to a Streambar into a private-listening source. Switch to content played by the Streambar’s internal Roku player when you need this feature.

How the methods differ in everyday use

Latency and controls

The app route has an explicit audio-delay workflow, which is valuable when the headphone sound arrives slightly before or after the picture. Direct Bluetooth and the voice-remote jack offer straightforward volume control, but Roku’s documented setup instructions do not list a separate delay adjustment for either. Media-button behavior also varies by headphone model when using direct Bluetooth.

Network dependence

The app depends on the phone or tablet and Roku staying on the same Wii network and on the app remaining connected. Direct Bluetooth and the voice remote avoid that phone-to-Roku app connection, although direct Bluetooth still requires the Roku hardware to support the feature. A temporary network change can therefore affect the app method without affecting a previously paired direct-Bluetooth setup.

Shared listening

For a household or small group, the app is the only method with Roku’s explicit allowance for up to four mobile listeners. The voice-remote method is intentionally a single-remote setup. Roku does not publish a multi-listener allowance for direct Bluetooth, so it should be treated as a single-headset solution unless your particular hardware documentation says otherwise.

Quick setup checklist

  1. Find the Roku model and determine whether mobile Headphone Mode, direct Bluetooth, or a headphone-jack remote is supported.
  2. Choose the headphone path: wired to the phone or remote, or Bluetooth to the phone or compatible Roku.
  3. For the app, update the app and put the phone and Roku on the same Wii network.
  4. Open Remote and tap Headphone.
  5. For direct Bluetooth, use Home > Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones > Add new wireless headphones.
  6. Set a safe listening level and test a short section of the program.
  7. If the picture and sound disagree, use the app’s Adjust audio delay control; if the connection cuts out, reseat wired plugs or re-pair Bluetooth.

Bottom line

Use the Roku app for the broadest compatibility and up to four private-listening devices, direct Bluetooth for a phone-free setup on selected Roku hardware, and a headphone-jack voice remote for one simple wired listener. Confirm the Roku model and headphone connection before troubleshooting or buying anything, because Headphone Mode is not available on every Roku device or through every input.
