A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To signal that major AI providers should not use your site for model-training collection, add separate robots.txt rules for each documented crawler: GPTBot, Google-Extended and ClaudeBot. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot separately, so you can block GPTBot while allowing ChatGPT search discovery. A generic noai meta tag is not an established cross-provider standard. Use noindex for search-result exclusion, and use CDN, WAF or bot-management blocking when an advisory robots signal is not strong enough.
What an AI-training opt-out can and cannot do
There are three different outcomes that site owners often call an opt-out:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Prevent a named crawler from fetching new pages. A robots.txt rule asks a specific user agent not to request URLs.
- Keep a page out of a search index. A
noindexdirective addresses indexing and search-result visibility. - Technically reject requests. A CDN, web application firewall (WAF) or bot-management product can deny traffic instead of merely receiving a preference signal.
Those controls are not interchangeable. A robots.txt file does not erase copies that a company already collected, and it does not bind an unidentified crawler. Google describes robots.txt as primarily a way to manage crawler traffic, not a mechanism for keeping a page out of Google. A noindex directive likewise concerns indexing; it is not documented as a universal AI-training prohibition.

Which crawler names matter
| Provider and user agent | Documented purpose | Typical decision |
|---|---|---|
GPTBot |
OpenAI crawler associated with content that may be used to improve or train models. | Disallow if you want to signal that model-training collection should not occur. |
OAI-SearchBot |
OpenAI crawler used for search-related retrieval and discovery. | Allow when you want pages to remain eligible for ChatGPT search discovery while blocking GPTBot. |
Google-Extended |
Google’s separate control token for generative-AI uses. | Disallow to signal no generative-AI training use while keeping ordinary Googlebot crawling separate. |
ClaudeBot |
Anthropic crawler that collects web content that could potentially contribute to model training. | Disallow when you do not want to signal permission for that collection. |
These names are not synonyms for one universal AI bot. Each rule applies to the named user agent, and provider policies can change. Maintain the file as a policy document rather than assuming that one wildcard rule covers every present or future crawler.
Build a robots.txt policy step by step
1. List the outcomes you want
Write down whether your priority is model-training exclusion, search visibility, live retrieval, or all three. For example, a publisher may want to block training crawlers but keep ordinary search and OpenAI search discovery available. Another publisher may want every automated request denied. The first goal is a robots policy; the second needs network enforcement as well.
2. Add separate groups for each documented user agent
Place the file at the root of the relevant host as /robots.txt. The following example follows the provider-specific controls documented by OpenAI, Google and Anthropic:
# OpenAI: block model-training crawler, keep search crawler available
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
# Google: signal no generative-AI training while leaving Googlebot separate
User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /
# Anthropic: signal that ClaudeBot should not collect content for training
User-agent: ClaudeBot
Disallow: /
The blank lines make the groups easy to audit. The important detail is that GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot receive independent groups. OpenAI describes these settings as independent of one another, so allowing one does not implicitly allow the other.

3. Keep ordinary search crawling a separate decision
Do not add a blanket User-agent: * block merely because you want to restrict AI training. A wildcard rule can affect ordinary search engines, accessibility tools, monitoring services and other crawlers. If search visibility matters, leave your existing general policy intact and add named groups for the provider agents you are addressing.
4. Deploy and inspect the live file
- Save the policy as a plain-text file named
robots.txt. - Deploy it at the root of the exact host you want to govern; a rule on one host does not automatically govern another host or subdomain.
- Request the live
/robots.txtresponse from outside your publishing system and confirm that it returns the intended text rather than an HTML error page or a cached older version. - Check that each
User-agenttoken is spelled exactly as the provider documents it, thatDisallow: /is under the intended group, and that an unrelated wildcard group is not overriding your plan. - Record the deployment date and review the file whenever a provider announces a new crawler identity or changes its policy.
What a generic noai tag actually means
No universal directive is established
Many tutorials present a tag such as <meta name="noai" content="true"> as a universal switch. The official provider documentation covered here does not establish one cross-provider noai meta directive that every AI crawler must honor. Treat an undocumented tag as inert unless the specific provider confirms that it reads that exact syntax and explains what it controls.
A site can still use a provider-specific metadata control when a provider documents one. Such a control should be described narrowly: identify the provider, the exact tag or attribute, the resources it covers, and whether it affects training, search retrieval, or another use. Do not label a private convention a general web standard.
Why a meta tag cannot replace request controls
A crawler has to fetch a page before it can read an HTML meta tag. If your objective is to stop the request itself, a page-level tag is too late; use a WAF, CDN rule or bot-management control. If the page must disappear from search results, use the provider’s documented noindex mechanism or remove or protect the page. Neither case turns a generic noai tag into a universal training opt-out.

Robots.txt, noindex and network blocking compared
| Approach | Primary purpose | Scope | Mechanism | Effect on ordinary search | Maintenance burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Provider-specific robots.txt | Signal that a named crawler should not fetch URLs. | One documented provider user agent at a time. | Advisory policy read before crawling. | Can preserve ordinary search when you avoid blocking general search agents. | Manual rules must be updated as crawler names and policies change. |
noindex |
Prevent indexing or display in search results. | Pages or resources where the indexing engine can read the directive. | Indexing instruction, not a universal training rule. | Reduces or removes search visibility for affected pages. | Must be applied consistently and removed when pages should return to search. |
| CDN, WAF or bot management | Reject requests from identified bots or suspicious behavior. | Traffic patterns, IP intelligence and selected bot identities. | Technical request blocking. | May affect visibility or legitimate automation if rules are too broad. | Requires tuning, monitoring and exception handling. |
Choose the least disruptive control that meets your objective, then layer controls when necessary. A robots signal can communicate preference; a network rule can enforce a refusal. Neither retroactively removes material that was already copied or stored elsewhere.
How to keep ChatGPT search access while blocking training collection
OpenAI’s separate user-agent design allows a publisher to make this specific choice:
- Put
User-agent: GPTBotfollowed byDisallow: /in the file. - Put a separate
User-agent: OAI-SearchBotgroup withAllow: /(or no disallow rule for that group). - Leave your general search-engine rules unchanged.
- After deployment, inspect the live file and verify that the two groups were not merged into one rule by a content-management-system plugin.
This arrangement signals different permissions for model-training collection and search retrieval. It does not guarantee that every copy of your content is excluded from a model, and it does not control third-party crawlers that do not identify themselves as OpenAI agents.

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /
The separation is intentional: a Google-Extended rule signals that your content should not be used for the documented generative-AI purposes, while ordinary Googlebot crawling remains a separate policy decision. Do not replace this with a blanket block on all Google crawlers if you still need conventional indexing.
If your actual objective is that a page not appear in Google Search, use noindex or remove or protect the page. Google’s documentation explicitly distinguishes robots.txt traffic management from search-result removal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to signal an opt-out to Anthropic’s ClaudeBot
Anthropic identifies ClaudeBot as the crawler that collects web content that could potentially contribute to training its generative-AI models. A disallow group is:
User-agent: ClaudeBot
Disallow: /
This is a signal to that named crawler. It is not a promise that another crawler, an unannounced identity or an already stored copy will disappear. If your organization requires technical denial, pair the rule with a bot-management or WAF policy that identifies the traffic you intend to reject.

When robots.txt is not enough
Use a CDN or WAF for hard blocking
Cloudflare documents controls for blocking AI bots by behavior and identity, along with managed robots.txt and a Bot Preference Sync capability. Equivalent controls may exist in other CDN and WAF products. Configure them to deny only the traffic you have decided to block, because an overly broad rule can stop legitimate users, uptime monitors, feed readers or search crawlers.
Understand the trade-off between reach and enforcement
Blocking requests can protect unpublished or licensed material more reliably than an advisory file, but it can also reduce discovery and referral traffic. Cloudflare reported aggregate crawl-to-referral ratios in June 2025 of 1,700:1 for OpenAI and 73,000:1 for Anthropic. Those figures describe Cloudflare’s observed traffic relationship for that period; they are not a universal measurement of every site and do not prove that blocking a crawler will improve or harm your own traffic.
Do not confuse blocking with deletion
A network rule prevents a future request that matches it. It cannot recall screenshots, quotations, cached pages, datasets or model-training material obtained before the rule was installed. For sensitive information, remove it, require authentication, or use access controls before publication rather than relying solely on a crawler preference.
Testing and troubleshooting checklist
- The file returns an error: ensure the root path serves plain text with a successful response. A missing or inaccessible file cannot communicate your policy.
- A crawler still appears in logs: check the exact user-agent string, redirects, alternate hostnames and whether the request is from a different bot. Robots.txt does not authenticate identity or stop a noncompliant client.
- Search traffic disappeared: look for an accidental
User-agent: *disallow, a CMS-generated block, or a noindex directive added to page templates. - Only some URLs are protected: inspect path-specific rules, subdomains and separate media hosts. A root file governs the host where it is served, not every domain you own.
- Rules changed but behavior did not: account for crawler caching and scheduled revisits. Keep the old and new policy dates in your change log, then monitor subsequent requests.
- You need immediate denial: add a CDN, WAF or bot-management rule instead of waiting for a crawler to reread robots.txt.
- You used a noai meta tag: verify that the provider documents that exact tag. If it does not, replace the assumption with a named robots rule, noindex where appropriate, or technical blocking.
Maintenance: treat crawler policy as a living configuration
Provider user-agent names, purposes and defaults can change. Review your robots file and enforcement rules on a schedule and whenever a provider publishes a crawler update. Keep an inventory containing:
- the provider and exact user-agent token;
- whether the rule concerns training, search retrieval or another purpose;
- the desired action: allow, disallow or network-block;
- the business owner who approved the choice;
- the deployment date and the last verification of the live file; and
- any exceptions for public documentation, licensed feeds or authenticated areas.
Recheck the official documentation for OpenAI, Google and Anthropic before adding a new token. A provider-specific rule is only as current as the identity and semantics that provider currently documents.
A practical policy for most publishers
For a public site that wants conventional search visibility but does not want to signal permission for major model-training crawlers, the balanced configuration is:
- Disallow
GPTBot,Google-ExtendedandClaudeBotin separate groups. - Allow
OAI-SearchBotonly if ChatGPT search discovery is desirable. - Keep ordinary search-engine rules unchanged unless search exclusion is a separate goal.
- Do not rely on an undocumented generic
noaitag. - Use
noindexonly for pages that should not be indexed or shown in search. - Add CDN, WAF or bot-management blocking for content that requires technical request denial.
- Monitor logs and revisit the policy as crawler identities and provider documentation evolve.
This combination separates training preference, search visibility and enforcement instead of treating them as one switch. It also makes the limits explicit: robots.txt is advisory, noindex is about indexing, and neither control removes material collected before the policy took effect.
