Qwen Image 2 is a single hosted model for both creating images from text and editing an image you provide. On Replicate, beginners can try it in the model playground or call the listing through the API with the identifier qwen/qwen-image-2. The most reliable workflow is to describe composition first, then style; for lettering, provide the exact copy, language, capitalization and alignment; for edits, state what must remain unchanged. This guide explains the controls, prompting method, editing process, reproducibility options and version caveats without assuming a local GPU.
What Qwen Image 2 is
Replicate presents Qwen Image 2 as a unified image-generation and image-editing model from Alibaba’s Qwen team. “Unified” means you do not select one model for text-to-image and another for image-to-image work: a prompt by itself asks for a new image, while a prompt plus an input image can request an edit, restyle or other transformation.

The model is aimed at cases where ordinary image generators often struggle: readable words inside an image, detailed layouts, realistic lighting and a prompt that contains several constraints. The Qwen-Image-2.0 technical report describes a Qwen3-VL condition encoder paired with a Multimodal Diffusion Transformer. According to that report, the system accepts instructions of up to 1K tokens, a useful capacity for slides, posters, infographics and comics with substantial text and layout direction.

QwenLM’s February 10, 2026 launch note highlights native 2K resolution as well as the unified generation-and-editing design. The Qwen team’s May 11, 2026 technical report claims improvements in multilingual text fidelity, typography, photorealistic generation and following complex prompts. Those are the authors’ reported capabilities, not an independent benchmark result.

What you need before you start
- A Replicate account: the browser playground and API workflow are hosted by Replicate, so you do not need to install model weights.
- The model listing: select the listing whose identifier is
qwen/qwen-image-2. Provider catalogs can change, so confirm the identifier shown on the page when you work. - A clear prompt: decide the subject, setting, composition, visual treatment and any words that must appear before you submit.
- An optional reference image: editing is available when you supply an image input. A reference is not required for a new image.
The documented hosted flow does not require a local graphics card, drawing tablet or camera. It runs in Replicate’s infrastructure; your own device only needs to reach the playground or send an API request.
Run your first image in the Replicate playground
- Open the Qwen Image 2 model page. Verify that the selected listing displays
qwen/qwen-image-2, then open its playground. This check prevents accidentally using a similarly named or newer listing. - Write the prompt in two layers. Start with the subject and arrangement: who or what is present, where each item sits, the viewpoint and the background. Follow with lighting, materials, color palette and rendering style.
- Leave the image input empty for text-to-image. Add a reference image only when the task is an edit, a restyle or image-to-image transformation.
- Choose an aspect ratio. The page lists square, landscape and portrait choices, with
1:1as the default. Pick the shape that matches the intended use instead of cropping a finished result later. - Decide whether to match the input. When an image is supplied, enabling
match_input_imageuses that image’s aspect ratio and resolution rather than the ratio you selected. - Review prompt expansion.
enable_prompt_expansionis enabled by default and automatically expands or optimizes your wording. Keep it on when you want help elaborating a short brief; turn it off when every phrase must remain tightly controlled. - Add a negative prompt if needed. Use
negative_promptfor elements you want excluded, such as extra objects, unwanted colors or illegible lettering. Keep exclusions specific rather than writing a long list of unrelated dislikes. - Set a seed only when you need repeatability. The accepted integer range is 0 through 2,147,483,647. Record the value with the prompt if you are comparing revisions.
- Run the prediction and inspect the result at full size. Check the layout, small type, faces, hands, edges and any areas covered by your edit request before deciding what to change.
Understand every documented control
| Control | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
prompt |
Describes a new image or the requested change to a reference image. | Always required; put content and layout before aesthetic wording. |
image |
Optional reference image supplied for editing, restyling or image-to-image work. | Use when preserving or transforming an existing composition is easier than describing it from scratch. |
aspect_ratio |
Sets the output shape. The interface lists square, landscape and portrait ratios, with 1:1 as the default. |
Choose a shape that fits a poster, slide, social graphic or portrait before generation. |
match_input_image |
With an input image, adopts that image’s aspect ratio and resolution instead of the selected ratio. | Enable when geometry of the source must remain consistent. |
enable_prompt_expansion |
Automatically expands and optimizes the prompt; enabled by default. | Useful for concise briefs; disable for highly literal wording or controlled experiments. |
negative_prompt |
Names elements to avoid. | Remove recurring artifacts or unwanted objects without rewriting the main description. |
seed |
Accepts an integer from 0 to 2,147,483,647 for reproducibility. | Save a seed when testing one change at a time. A seed does not make a different prompt produce the same image. |
Build prompts that the model can follow
1. Put composition before style
Replicate recommends a structure-first prompt. Begin with the main subject, count and placement of objects, camera or viewpoint, depth order and background. Only after the scene is unambiguous should you add style, lens character, lighting, color and mood. This ordering gives spatial instructions priority instead of burying them under adjectives.
For example, a useful brief might say: “A three-panel travel poster: left panel shows a snow-covered mountain, center panel shows a blue train entering a tunnel, right panel shows a coastal lighthouse; clean margins and a single headline at the top.” Style can follow: “mid-century screen-print texture, limited navy and orange palette, crisp high-contrast lighting.” The example demonstrates ordering; it is not a guarantee that every generated letter or object will be perfect.
2. State relationships and constraints explicitly
Words such as “behind,” “in front of,” “on the left,” “centered,” “equal size” and “without changing” are more actionable than a general request for a beautiful composition. If one object must stay untouched during an edit, identify it and say what may change around it. If the background must remain, write that constraint directly rather than assuming the model will infer it.
- Describe the subject and count: “two mugs,” not “some mugs.”
- Describe placement: “the red mug on the right, slightly behind the blue mug.”
- Describe the camera view: “eye-level, straight-on product photo.”
- Describe preservation requirements for edits: “keep the person’s face, pose and background unchanged; replace only the jacket.”
3. Treat prompt expansion as a choice
With enable_prompt_expansion on, Replicate automatically elaborates and optimizes the prompt. That can help when your brief is short, but the expanded interpretation may add visual details you did not request. For a concept sketch, leave the default enabled and judge the result. For a controlled typography test or a sequence of near-identical edits, disable it so your wording remains the main variable.
Get more accurate text inside images
Text rendering is one of Qwen Image 2’s stated focus areas, but a text-capable model still needs precise instructions. Replicate’s guidance is to specify the exact wording, language, capitalization and alignment, and to add the phrase “spell exactly” when precision matters.
A reliable lettering checklist
- Put the complete copy in quotation marks in your prompt, including punctuation.
- Name the language and required capitalization, for example, “French, title case.”
- Specify location and alignment: “one line, centered at the top, with equal margins.”
- Describe hierarchy when there are multiple text elements: headline first, subtitle below, small label in the lower-right corner.
- Add “spell exactly” before the quoted copy when the wording must not change.
- Inspect the image at 100 percent. A headline that looks correct as a thumbnail can still contain a wrong character.
For multilingual posters or infographics, keep the copy short enough to fit the intended area and state the reading order. The technical report’s 1K-token instruction capacity is relevant to text-rich compositions, but it does not promise perfect spelling for every language or layout. Treat each output as a draft until you verify every character.

Upload the source image in the image field, then describe the desired change and the elements that must survive it. A concise edit prompt has three parts: the operation, the target area and preservation constraints.
Example edit structure
- Operation: “Change the cloudy sky to a clear sunset.”
- Target: “Affect only the sky above the roofline.”
- Preservation: “Keep the building, windows, people, camera angle and background geometry unchanged.”
If the source’s shape is important, enable match_input_image so the output follows the input image’s aspect ratio and resolution. If you instead need a different crop, leave that option off and select the desired ratio. Restyling works the same way: name the visual treatment after the preservation rules, such as “convert the image to a watercolor illustration while keeping the subject’s pose and object positions.”
Make one substantive change per attempt when you are diagnosing an edit. Asking simultaneously for a new wardrobe, a different time of day, extra people and a new camera angle makes it difficult to tell which instruction caused an unwanted alteration.

Choose resolution and aspect ratio deliberately
The launch information identifies native 2K resolution, while the Replicate interface exposes selectable square, landscape and portrait ratios. “2K” describes the model’s native resolution capability; it does not mean every ratio has identical pixel dimensions or that every output will contain the same amount of detail. Use the ratio selector for the final shape and judge fine type at full size.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a reference-image edit, match_input_image takes precedence over the selected ratio by using the source’s aspect ratio and resolution. This is useful for preserving a photographic frame. For a new composition, choose the ratio before writing the prompt so spatial terms such as “wide establishing view” or “tall poster” agree with the canvas.
Use a seed for repeatable experiments
The seed field accepts any integer from 0 to 2,147,483,647. Save the prompt, all other settings and the seed together. Then change one variable—such as a single adjective, the negative prompt or the aspect ratio—and compare the outputs. This is a practical way to learn which instruction is helping.
Reproducibility has limits. A seed is not a promise that a different prompt, model revision or provider implementation will produce the same pixels. If the listing changes, rerun your baseline and record the date and model identifier along with the seed.
Call Qwen Image 2 through the API
Replicate’s documented API workflow uses the same model identifier as the playground: qwen/qwen-image-2. The browser is convenient for exploration; an API is useful when your application needs a repeatable request pattern or a batch of images.

- Authenticate with Replicate using your application’s normal credential handling. Keep the token on a server or protected runtime rather than embedding it in a public webpage.
- Create a prediction for
qwen/qwen-image-2. Use the model’s current input schema shown on the listing instead of copying fields from another image model. - Send the documented inputs. Include
prompt; addimagefor an edit; and passaspect_ratio,match_input_image,enable_prompt_expansion,negative_promptandseedonly when they serve your use case. - Read the prediction result and retrieve the output according to Replicate’s current API response format. Do not assume a permanent URL shape or a fixed response timing; hosted APIs can revise those details.
- Log the model identifier, date, inputs and seed. This record is essential when you compare revisions or investigate a changed result.
The API and playground expose the same conceptual controls, but availability, limits and pricing are provider-specific. Check the current model listing before putting an automated workflow into production.

The image ignores part of the layout
Rewrite the prompt so composition comes first. State positions and relationships in plain language, reduce decorative adjectives and split a crowded brief into a primary arrangement plus a small number of style constraints. If prompt expansion is enabled, try the same wording with it disabled to see whether elaboration is introducing competing details.
Words are misspelled or misplaced
Quote the exact copy, identify the language and capitalization, specify alignment and add “spell exactly.” Reduce the amount of text per image when possible. Verify the result at full size; if one character is wrong, treat that output as unusable rather than silently publishing an approximation.
An edit changes the background or subject
Name the area to change and list the elements to preserve. Use “affect only” language and avoid combining several unrelated transformations in one request. Supplying the reference image with match_input_image enabled can help retain its framing, but it does not replace a precise preservation instruction.

The output has the wrong shape
For a new image, select the appropriate square, landscape or portrait ratio before running the prediction. For an edit that must retain the source frame, enable match_input_image. Remember that the default is 1:1; leaving it unchanged is a common reason for an unexpected square result.

Two runs are hard to compare
Record the seed and every input, then alter one setting at a time. A changed aspect ratio, negative prompt or prompt-expansion state can alter composition even when the main sentence is identical.
The listing or control is missing
Confirm that you are on the Qwen Image 2 listing and that the identifier is exactly qwen/qwen-image-2. Providers sometimes add or retire versions independently. A catalog entry elsewhere is not proof that the same version, controls or terms are available on Replicate.
Version names and availability require a date check
The QwenLM repository records the Qwen-Image-2.0 launch on February 10, 2026. The technical report is dated May 11, 2026 and refers to Qwen-Image-2.0. Separately, QwenCloud’s model directory, inspected on October 13, 2026, lists Qwen-Image-2.1 and Qwen-Image-3.0 alongside 2.0 entries.

For a tutorial, automation or comparison, verify the provider, model identifier and input controls on the day you use them. Do not substitute a 2.1 or 3.0 name for qwen/qwen-image-2 unless the Replicate listing explicitly offers it.
How to evaluate Qwen Image 2 fairly
No independently verified benchmark score is established in the available material. Replicate’s page includes a leaderboard-ranking claim, but the inspected sources do not provide enough methodology or independent corroboration to treat that ranking as a measured fact. The Qwen report’s improvements are author claims, not a controlled head-to-head test.
If you compare Qwen Image 2 with another image option, use the same prompt, reference image, ratio and evaluation standard for each system. Score the dimensions that matter to your project:
| Dimension | What to inspect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Text accuracy | Exact spelling, punctuation, language, capitalization and alignment. | Posters, labels, diagrams and social graphics fail when readable text is wrong. |
| Prompt and layout adherence | Object count, placement, relationships and requested constraints. | A visually attractive image can still be unusable if the composition is incorrect. |
| Photorealistic detail | Lighting coherence, material texture, anatomy and fine edges at full size. | Realistic scenes expose inconsistencies that a thumbnail hides. |
| Editing control | Whether the requested area changes while preserved areas remain stable. | Precise edits are different from generating a merely similar replacement. |
| Resolution and shape | Native output detail, selected ratio and behavior with a reference image. | Your delivery format may require a particular canvas or readable small type. |
| Hosted workflow | Playground access, API inputs, current availability and current pricing. | A capable model is not useful if its provider workflow does not fit your production needs. |
Keep the comparison descriptive rather than declaring a universal winner. The right choice depends on whether your priority is typography, editing fidelity, photorealism, layout adherence or a particular hosted workflow.

A practical beginner workflow
- Start with one clear scene. Use the playground, keep the image field empty and leave the default square ratio only if a square canvas suits the job.
- Write composition first. Include subject, count, position, viewpoint and background before style.
- Add exact lettering instructions. Quote the copy, name the language and capitalization, specify alignment and say “spell exactly.”
- Generate a baseline. Save the prompt, ratio, prompt-expansion state and seed.
- Inspect at full size. Check text, edges, object relationships and lighting rather than judging only the thumbnail.
- Change one variable. Adjust a single constraint, negative prompt or style phrase and rerun with the same seed when you want a meaningful comparison.
- For an edit, upload the best baseline. Describe one operation, identify the target area and list everything that must remain unchanged.
- Move to the API only after the prompt is stable. Reuse the documented identifier and input names, and log the version context so a later provider change is visible.
This process keeps the model’s two strengths—generation and editing—in one workflow while making failures diagnosable. It also prevents a common beginner mistake: changing the prompt, ratio, seed and editing mode all at once, then having no way to know which decision affected the result.
