On the Chromebook, turn on Quick Share in Settings → Connected devices and choose who can find it. On the phone, open the item, tap Share → Quick Share, select the Chromebook, and accept the transfer if prompted. To send in the opposite direction, use the Chromebook’s Files app and choose Share → Quick Share.
Both devices should be nearby, have Bluetooth enabled, and keep the receiving screen unlocked and discoverable. The exact Galaxy labels can differ by Android and One UI version, so a menu may not look identical to the examples below.

What Quick Share does and what you need
Quick Share is Google’s nearby-sharing feature for supported Android phones and Chromebooks. It was previously called Nearby Share, so an older phone or Chromebook may still show that name. It handles common items such as photos, documents, webpages and other shareable content through the operating system’s Share menu rather than through a separate cable workflow.

Google lists these minimum platform versions:

These version numbers are compatibility floors, not a promise that every menu will look the same. ChromeOS and Galaxy software updates can move a control, rename it or change the appearance of the Share panel. If the phone is on a newer One UI release, use the current Quick Share entry; if it is on an older build, look for Nearby Share.

For Galaxy phones, Google notes that settings and features can vary on devices running Android 10 and One UI 2.1 or later. A current Galaxy may call the feature Quick Share, while an older software build can use Nearby Share or place the control in a slightly different part of the Share panel.
Quick Share is separate from the Chromebook’s Connected devices phone connection. Phone connection features can add phone-hub functions, but they are not required for the Quick Share send-and-receive steps in this guide. Quick Share has its own setup under Connected devices. You can therefore share a file even if you have not paired the phone for the Chromebook’s other phone features.
Before starting, have these conditions ready:
- Keep the phone and Chromebook close to each other.
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices.
- Keep the receiving device’s screen unlocked.
- Make the receiving device visible in Quick Share or place it in Receive mode.
- Install the required ChromeOS and Android versions if the feature is unavailable.
Bluetooth is part of the discovery process, so turning it on only after opening the Share sheet can leave the sender with an incomplete device list. Enable it first, then reopen Quick Share if necessary. The receiver also needs to be ready: a locked screen or hidden device can make a perfectly compatible phone or Chromebook appear unavailable.

Turn on Quick Share on the Chromebook
Quick Share is off by default on a Chromebook. Complete this setup once before trying to send a file to or from the phone. The setup establishes the Chromebook’s name and determines who is allowed to discover it.
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the Chromebook shelf.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Connected devices.
- Find Quick Share and select Set up.
- Choose a device name. This is the name nearby devices will see.
- Choose a visibility option.
- Confirm the setup.
Use a name you can recognize in a crowded list of nearby devices. The name is for identification; it does not change the Chromebook’s account or its storage. If you later need to change discovery behavior, return to the Quick Share controls rather than repeating the entire setup.
The Chromebook visibility choices documented by Google are:

Choose the narrowest option that lets your sender find the device. Available to everyone for 10 minutes is a deliberate temporary-public setting, not a permanent requirement. Use it when the Chromebook does not appear and switch back afterward. The ten-minute setting is useful for a one-time exchange with another person, but it broadens discoverability while active.

Send a photo or file from the Samsung phone to the Chromebook
This is the usual direction when you want to copy a Galaxy photo, download, document or webpage to the Chromebook. Quick Share starts from the app that is displaying the item, so the first step is always to open or select the content before looking for the nearby device.
- On the Samsung phone, open the photo, file, webpage or other content you want to transfer.
- Tap Share. On a Galaxy, this may be the standard Android Share icon or a Share command in the app’s menu.
- Tap Quick Share. If the phone says Nearby Share, use that entry; it is the earlier name for the same nearby-sharing feature.
- Wait for nearby devices to appear, then select the Chromebook by the device name you chose during setup.
- Watch the Chromebook for a request. Select Accept if a prompt appears.
The phone’s Share menu belongs to the app, so a gallery, browser and file manager may arrange the first Share button differently. The Quick Share choice is the important second step. If the phone presents more than one nearby device, compare the names with the Chromebook name you selected during setup before sending.
If the Chromebook is missing from the list, open its Quick Share controls or use Chromebook Quick Settings to make it visible. Check that Bluetooth is on, the Chromebook is unlocked, and its selected visibility setting permits the phone to discover it. Leave the Chromebook’s receiving screen available while the phone searches; switching away or locking it can interrupt discovery.
When both devices are signed in to the same Google Account, Chromebook Help says: “When you use Quick Share with any Android or Chromebook that’s logged in to the same Google Account, transfers are automatically accepted.” The actual prompt behavior can still depend on the current visibility and software state, so keep the receiving screen available and watch for a request rather than assuming every transfer will skip confirmation.
Share several items from the phone
The exact selection control belongs to the app holding the files. In a gallery or file manager, select the items first, tap Share, then choose Quick Share and the Chromebook. If an app only exposes one item at a time, repeat the send action for each item. Selecting the group before opening Share avoids starting separate transfers unnecessarily when the app supports multi-selection.
Send a file from the Chromebook to the Samsung phone
Use the Files app when the source is on the Chromebook. The phone must be ready to receive before you search for it, especially when its Quick Share visibility is limited.
- Open the Chromebook’s Files app.
- Browse to the file you want to send.
- Right-click the file.
- Choose Share → Quick Share.
- Select the Samsung phone from the nearby-device list.
- Choose Share.
- Keep the phone unlocked and in Receive mode or otherwise visible until the transfer is accepted.
To send more than one file, hold Ctrl while selecting the files in Files, right-click the selection, and choose Share → Quick Share. Select the phone and then choose Share. This is the Chromebook equivalent of selecting several photos before opening the phone’s Share menu.

When the receiving period ends or visibility changes, the phone may stop appearing until you enable it again.

Choose visibility without exposing the device unnecessarily
Visibility controls discoverability; they do not replace the transfer approval step when one is shown. The Chromebook and Android options are similar but not identical. Treat visibility as a deliberate privacy choice, not merely a setting to leave on permanently.
Chromebook visibility
- Your devices: The Chromebook is visible to nearby devices signed in to the same Google Account.
- Contacts: Contacts can find it while the screen is on and unlocked.
- Hidden: It is not continuously discoverable. You make it visible when a sender attempts to share.
- Available to everyone for 10 minutes: Nearby devices can find it for a temporary period of up to 10 minutes.
Android visibility
Google lists Your devices, Contacts and Everyone for 10 minutes for Android. On a Galaxy, the wording and location of these controls can vary with Android and One UI. Look for Quick Share in the Share sheet, Quick Settings or the phone’s connected-device settings.
For a one-time transfer with someone else’s device, the 10-minute everyone setting can make discovery easier. Because it broadens who can see the device, turn it off or let it expire when the transfer is complete. For your own phone and Chromebook on one Google Account, Your devices usually limits discovery to those signed-in devices.

Contacts visibility is not the same as an unlocked, continuously visible device: Google specifies that the Chromebook screen must be on and unlocked for contacts to find it. Hidden visibility is useful when you want to keep discovery off until you intentionally respond to a share attempt. In every mode, check the device name before accepting a request.
What to check when the device does not appear
Work through these checks in order. The failure is usually discoverability, Bluetooth, the receiver’s lock state or Quick Share being disabled.
1. Confirm the receiver is ready
- Unlock the receiving phone or Chromebook and leave its screen on.
- Open Quick Share on the Chromebook, or enable visibility temporarily from Chromebook Quick Settings.
- On Android, place the phone in Receive mode or select a visibility option that allows the sender to find it.
Do this on the device that should receive the file, not only on the sender. A sender cannot make a hidden receiver appear without the receiver becoming visible.
2. Check Bluetooth and proximity
Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices. Keep them nearby while the sender searches. If Bluetooth was just enabled, close and reopen the Quick Share panel or Share sheet and search again. Moving the devices closer also helps distinguish a discovery problem from an incorrect device selection.

3. Verify the Chromebook’s Quick Share setup
On the Chromebook, select the time, open Settings → Connected devices, and inspect Quick Share. If it is still off, select Set up and choose a visibility option. If it is set to Hidden, make the Chromebook visible while the phone is searching.

4. Toggle Quick Share or restart the Chromebook
Google recommends turning Quick Share off and back on when discovery fails. If that does not help, restart the Chromebook and try the transfer again with both screens unlocked. Reopen the sender’s Share menu after the restart so it performs a fresh nearby-device search.
5. Recheck the account only for same-account behavior
If you expect automatic acceptance through Your devices, verify that the phone and Chromebook are signed in to the same Google Account. A different account does not prevent every Quick Share transfer, but it changes which visibility and approval behavior you should expect. Do not treat account matching as a universal requirement for nearby sharing.

A Chromebook managed by an employer or school may have administrator restrictions on phone-related features. If Quick Share is missing, disabled or cannot be changed, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy. A managed device can intentionally remove or limit controls that are available on a personal Chromebook.
Do not confuse this policy issue with the separate Connected devices phone connection. Google’s troubleshooting for that connection includes checking operating-system and Google Play services updates and confirming the same Google Account. Those checks apply to the phone-connection feature and are not universal prerequisites for every Quick Share transfer.

A reliable transfer routine
For repeated transfers, this sequence minimizes interruptions:
- Leave Bluetooth enabled on both devices.
- Set the Chromebook to Your devices if both devices use the same Google Account, or choose Contacts for a controlled group.
- Unlock the receiving device before opening the sender’s Share menu.
- Start Quick Share from the item’s Share menu on the phone, or from Files → right-click → Share → Quick Share on the Chromebook.
- Select the correct device name and watch the receiver for an acceptance prompt.
- Return a device from temporary everyone visibility to a narrower setting after the transfer window ends.
For a personal phone and Chromebook, Your devices is generally the least disruptive choice because it limits discovery to nearby devices using the same account. For a one-off exchange, use the ten-minute everyone option only while needed. If a transfer does not begin, repeat the receiver-first preparation: unlock the screen, enable Bluetooth, open Receive mode or Quick Share visibility, then start the send action.
Quick Share is therefore a software feature rather than an accessory purchase: a compatible Galaxy phone, a supported Chromebook, Bluetooth, and the correct visibility state are the practical requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pair my Samsung phone with the Chromebook first?
No. Quick Share has its own setup under Chromebook Settings → Connected devices and does not require the separate Connected devices phone-connection feature. You do need Bluetooth enabled, nearby devices, and a visible, unlocked receiver.
Why is Quick Share called Nearby Share on my Galaxy?
Nearby Share was the previous name for Quick Share. An older Android or ChromeOS build may still display that label; choose the Nearby Share entry in the Share menu when that is what your phone shows.
What is the minimum supported software?

Why does the phone not appear in Chromebook Files?
Make sure the phone is nearby, Bluetooth is on, the phone is unlocked and in Receive mode or another visible state. Then reopen Files → right-click → Share → Quick Share. If discovery still fails, toggle Quick Share or restart the Chromebook.
Can I send several files at once?
Yes. On the phone, select multiple items in the gallery or file manager before tapping Share and Quick Share. On the Chromebook, hold Ctrl while selecting files in Files, then right-click and choose Share → Quick Share.

An administrator may restrict phone-related features on a managed Chromebook. If the setting is missing, disabled or locked, contact the school or workplace administrator.
