For Android-to-Chromebook sharing, Google lists Android 6.0 or later and ChromeOS 91 or later as the minimum requirements.
Set up Quick Share on the Chromebook first, choose a visibility option that allows the other device to find it, then send from either device. The receiver may need to accept the request; devices signed in to the same Google Account accept transfers automatically.

This guide covers both directions, privacy settings, Receive mode, QR-code sharing and the checks that usually restore a missing nearby device.
Check compatibility before you start
Quick Share is built into supported Android devices and Chromebooks, so you do not need a cable, adapter, replacement part or paid service. Confirm these requirements before troubleshooting a failed transfer:

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- The Pixel must run Android 6.0 or later.
- The Chromebook must run ChromeOS 91 or later.
- Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices.
- Both devices need to be close to each other during discovery and transfer. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends bringing them within 30 cm, or about one foot.
- A Chromebook managed by a workplace or school may have Quick Share disabled by its administrator.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also required when you use the QR-code transfer option. For ordinary nearby discovery, start by checking Bluetooth and the visibility setting on the receiving device.
If the Chromebook is managed, you may be unable to change the setting yourself. In that case, an administrator must allow the feature before the normal setup steps can work. An unavailable setup control on a work or school Chromebook is therefore not necessarily a hardware problem.
Turn on Quick Share on the Chromebook
Quick Share is off by default on a Chromebook, so complete this setup before trying to send a file from the Pixel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the Chromebook’s time menu.
- Open Settings.
- Select Connected devices.
- Choose Set up next to Quick Share.
- Give the Chromebook a device name when prompted.
- Select a visibility option.
- Confirm the setup.
The name you choose is what you identify in the nearby-device list. Pick a name that distinguishes this Chromebook from other computers in the room, especially if several devices are available.
The visibility choice controls who can see the Chromebook in a nearby-device list. You can change it later when you need to share with a different audience. If you only need to receive from your own Pixel, start with Your devices rather than making the Chromebook visible to everyone.
Prepare both devices for the first transfer
Before opening the share sheet, wake both devices, unlock them and place them close together. A locked or sleeping Chromebook has more limited discoverability, and a phone that is hidden will not normally appear to the sender.
On the Pixel, Quick Share is available from the Quick Settings panel and can also be found by searching for it in the Settings app. On the Chromebook, the relevant controls are under Settings > Connected devices. Open those controls on the receiving device first so you can change visibility without interrupting a pending share.
For a same-owner transfer, sign the Pixel and Chromebook in to the same Google Account and use Your devices. Google says transfers between your own devices on that account are accepted automatically. If the devices use different accounts, expect an acceptance prompt on the receiver.
Choose the right visibility setting
Use the narrowest setting that still lets the intended recipient discover the device. The available choices differ slightly between ChromeOS and Android.

| Device | Visibility choices | When to use each choice |
|---|---|---|
| Chromebook | Your devices, Contacts, Hidden, or temporary availability to Everyone for up to 10 minutes | Use Your devices for devices associated with your account, Contacts for people in your contacts, Hidden when you want to make the Chromebook discoverable only when prompted, and temporary everyone access for a one-off transfer. |
| Pixel | Your devices, Contacts, or Everyone for 10 minutes | Use the account or contacts option for routine sharing. Use the 10-minute option only while the other device needs to find the phone. |
Google says the Chromebook falls back to Your devices visibility when its screen is off or locked. On Android, the temporary everyone setting returns to the previous visibility selection after 10 minutes. Leave Receive mode or a broad visibility setting when the transfer is complete.
These choices are about discoverability, not a permanent invitation to transfer. The receiver still gets an incoming request in situations that require confirmation. A broad setting is useful for a short exchange with a device that is not associated with your account, but it should not be your everyday default.
Send a file from the Pixel to the Chromebook
1. Make the Chromebook discoverable
Wake and unlock the Chromebook, then check that Quick Share visibility allows the Pixel to find it. If the Chromebook is hidden, change visibility temporarily or put it in Receive mode. A Chromebook that is locked or has its screen off may not remain visible to nearby devices other than your own devices.
If you are sending to your own Chromebook, choose Your devices and confirm that both products use the same Google Account. If you are sending to another person’s Chromebook, use Contacts when appropriate or temporarily choose everyone visibility for up to 10 minutes.
2. Start sharing on the Pixel
- Open the photo, video, document or other file on the Pixel.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Quick Share.
- Wait for the nearby-device list to appear.
- Choose the Chromebook’s device name.
Quick Share is also available from Android Quick Settings. You can find it by searching for Quick Share in the Pixel’s Settings app if it is not immediately visible in the sharing sheet.
If several nearby devices are listed, match the name you assigned during Chromebook setup before tapping. Selecting the wrong device can send a request to someone else nearby, so do not rely only on the device type.
3. Accept the request
Accept the incoming transfer on the Chromebook when prompted. If the Pixel and Chromebook are your own devices and are signed in to the same Google Account, Google says the transfer is accepted automatically.
If the Chromebook does not appear, do not repeatedly resend the file. First check its visibility, make sure it is awake, and use the troubleshooting sequence below. Reopening the Quick Share list after changing visibility gives the sender a fresh discovery attempt.
Send a file from the Chromebook to the Pixel
1. Prepare the Pixel to receive
On the Pixel, open Quick Share through Quick Settings or by searching for it in Settings. Select a visibility option that allows the Chromebook to see the phone. For a short, one-time exchange, use Everyone for 10 minutes; for your own devices, Your devices is the narrower choice.

Keep the phone unlocked while you are changing this setting and waiting for the request. If the phone is not listed, enable Receive mode or temporarily broaden visibility, then return to the Chromebook.
2. Choose Quick Share in the Chromebook sharing flow
- Open the file on the Chromebook or select it in the Chromebook’s file-browsing interface.
- Start the Chromebook’s sharing flow.
- Choose Quick Share.
- Select the Pixel from the nearby-device list.
Use the Pixel’s device name to distinguish it from other Android phones nearby. If the list was open before you changed the phone’s visibility, close and reopen the sharing flow so the Chromebook searches again.
3. Accept on the phone
Accept the incoming request on the Pixel. If the Chromebook cannot find the phone, put the Pixel in Receive mode or temporarily broaden its visibility, then try the sharing flow again.
After the transfer, open the Files app on the Pixel to verify that the item arrived. Android places received Quick Share files in a dedicated folder described below.
Use Receive mode when a device is missing
Receive mode is useful when the receiving device does not appear in the sender’s nearby-device list. Enable it on the device that should receive the file, then return to the sending device and reopen the Quick Share list.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Receive mode as a temporary discovery aid rather than leaving a broad setting active indefinitely. Once the request is accepted and the transfer finishes, switch back to the normal visibility choice. On Android, the temporary everyone setting expires after 10 minutes and restores the prior selection. On the Chromebook, temporary availability to everyone lasts up to 10 minutes.
Use a QR code if nearby discovery fails
Google’s Android instructions also describe a QR-code option when the other device cannot be found. Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled for QR-code transfers. Use this as an alternative to waiting for the nearby-device list to populate:
- Open Quick Share from the Pixel’s share sheet or Quick Settings.
- Choose the QR-code option when the intended device is not listed.
- Use the other device to scan the displayed code.
- Accept the transfer if a confirmation appears.
A QR code does not remove the basic radio requirements. If either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is disabled, correct that first. QR sharing is particularly useful when the nearby list does not refresh, but it does not bypass visibility, acceptance or administrator restrictions.
Where received files appear on the Pixel
Files received on Android appear in the default Files app under Downloads > Quick Share. Open the Files app, choose Downloads, and open the Quick Share folder to verify the transfer.

The supplied Google setup guidance does not specify a single fixed destination folder for files received by ChromeOS. After accepting a transfer on the Chromebook, use its file-browsing interface and the save action shown on screen to locate the file. If you are unsure whether the transfer completed, check for the acceptance notification and then search the Chromebook’s Files interface for the filename.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot Quick Share in this order
Work through these checks in sequence. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify the cause.
1. Confirm Bluetooth is on
Check Bluetooth on both the Pixel and Chromebook. Quick Share discovery depends on the devices’ wireless radios, and a disabled Bluetooth connection can prevent the receiver from appearing. After enabling Bluetooth, close and reopen the Quick Share picker.
2. Move the devices within 30 cm
Place the Pixel and Chromebook within 30 cm, or about one foot, of each other. Keep them close while the nearby-device list loads and while the transfer runs. Distance can affect discovery even when both devices otherwise meet the software requirements.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. Cycle airplane mode
Toggle airplane mode off and on as part of the connection reset, then verify that Bluetooth is enabled again. Reopen Quick Share after the radios reconnect. This is a quick way to refresh a radio state without changing account or visibility settings.
4. Check for another transfer
Wait until any other transfer involving the receiving device has finished. A receiver already handling another transfer may not accept a new request immediately. Once the first transfer is complete, start a fresh Quick Share session rather than stacking multiple requests.
5. Check Location on Android 12 or earlier
If the Pixel runs Android 12 or an earlier release, make sure Location is turned on. Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls this out for those Android versions. This check is relevant to the phone’s software version, not to the Chromebook’s location.
6. Refresh Quick Share or restart
On the Chromebook, turn Quick Share off and on again. If discovery still fails, restart both devices and repeat the visibility and distance checks. A restart is most useful after confirming that the feature is enabled and the receiver is discoverable.
Recommended Free Tools
7. Recheck the receiver’s visibility
The receiver must be discoverable under the selected audience. Set it to Your devices for same-account devices, Contacts for contacts-based sharing, or temporary everyone access when the other device is not recognized. If the device is hidden, the sender will not normally see it until the receiver is made available.
Best Value
Remember that a Chromebook with its screen off or locked falls back to Your devices. Wake and unlock it when sharing with a device that is not one of your own account-linked devices.
8. Check for administrator restrictions
On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may have disabled Quick Share. If the setup option is unavailable or the setting cannot be changed, contact the organization that manages the Chromebook. Reinstalling or repeatedly restarting will not override an administrator policy.
Privacy practices for everyday sharing
- Use Your devices when sending between your own Pixel and Chromebook signed in to the same Google Account.
- Use Contacts when the intended recipient is in your contacts and does not need broad discovery.
- Use Hidden on the Chromebook when you do not want it continuously visible, and make it available only when you are ready to receive.
- Use everyone visibility only for the short period needed to complete a transfer.
- Remember that the Chromebook may revert to Your devices when its screen is locked or off.
- Leave Receive mode and restore the previous visibility selection after a one-time exchange.
- Accept unexpected requests only when you recognize the sending device and were expecting a transfer.
Pixel-to-Chromebook and Chromebook-to-Pixel at a glance
| Task | Sender action | Receiver action | Common reason it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel to Chromebook | Open the file, tap Share > Quick Share, then choose the Chromebook. | Make the Chromebook visible and accept the request. Same-account devices accept automatically. | The Chromebook is hidden, locked, outside the recommended distance, or restricted by an administrator. |
| Chromebook to Pixel | Start the Chromebook sharing flow, choose Quick Share, then select the Pixel. | Make the Pixel discoverable and accept the request. | The Pixel is not in a compatible visibility mode, or Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or (on Android 12 and earlier) Location is off. |
What to remember
The reliable workflow is simple: meet the Android 6.0 and ChromeOS 91 requirements, turn on Quick Share on the Chromebook, make the receiver visible, keep both devices within about one foot, and accept the request when prompted. For same-account Pixel and Chromebook devices, acceptance is automatic. If the Pixel receives the file, look in Files > Downloads > Quick Share; if discovery fails, check Bluetooth, visibility, distance, an active transfer, older-Android Location settings, and administrator controls in that order.
