Public Wi-Fi is usually safe for ordinary browsing, but take a moment to confirm the network and protect your accounts. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says widespread encryption means connecting through public Wi-Fi is usually safe; HTTPS encrypts the connection to a website, but it cannot make a dishonest website trustworthy.
Is public Wi-Fi safe?
Usually, yes—with sensible precautions. The FTC’s consumer guidance, “Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know” (February 2023), says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because most websites now use encryption. When a site uses HTTPS, the connection between your browser and that site is encrypted in transit.

That protection is not a verdict on the website itself. A scam site can also use encryption: the FTC cautions that information sent to a scammer’s website may be encrypted on its way there and still be exposed to the scammer operating the site. Check that a site is the one you intended to visit, not just that it shows HTTPS or a lock symbol.
How to connect to free Wi-Fi safely
- Confirm the network with staff. At an airport, café, hotel, library, or other venue, ask for the official Wi-Fi name and how sign-in should work. This is especially useful when several names look similar. CISA’s public Wi-Fi tip card advises checking the network name and login steps with staff.
- Join the intended network. A venue name that looks familiar is not proof that a hotspot is genuine; an attacker can create a similarly named network.
- Check websites before entering information. Look for HTTPS or the browser’s lock symbol, then confirm the address belongs to the service you mean to use. HTTPS signals an encrypted connection, not an honest destination.
- Protect your accounts. Use strong, unique passwords and turn on two-factor authentication where available.
- Keep your device software current. Update your operating system, browser, and security software. Enable automatic updates where appropriate so important fixes are not missed.
- Choose another connection for sensitive tasks when practical. Cellular data is an alternative if it is available and suits your needs; it is not guaranteed to be faster, cheaper, or safer in every situation.
Is the airport or coffee-shop Wi-Fi real?
Do not rely on the network name alone. A fake hotspot can imitate a venue’s name, so ask staff to confirm both the official network and any expected sign-in page or steps. If the network or login flow differs from what staff describe, pause and check before connecting or entering details.

Should you use a VPN on public Wi-Fi?
A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server, adding a layer of protection on that part of the connection. It is not a replacement for choosing the right hotspot, using HTTPS, or checking where you enter information. A VPN provider becomes another party you must trust, and the FTC says a VPN app generally will not make you entirely anonymous.
VPN apps can differ: an app may not encrypt all traffic, may request sensitive permissions, or may share data. Before installing one, investigate who operates it, read its permissions and privacy terms, and look for independent information about what traffic it encrypts. Do not treat an anonymity promise as evidence that an app is safe or effective.

Public Wi-Fi, cellular data, or a VPN?
| Option | What it offers | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Public Wi-Fi with HTTPS and account/device protections | Access through a venue hotspot; most websites use encryption, according to the FTC’s February 2023 guidance. | Confirm the network and login flow with staff. You may need the venue’s sign-in page to get online. |
| Cellular data | An alternative connection for a sensitive task when service is available. | Whether it is practical depends on availability and your mobile-data allowance. No general speed, cost, or coverage advantage is established. |
| VPN over an internet connection | May encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server. | It is an additional service layer, not an access network. Check the provider, app permissions, privacy terms, data sharing, and encryption claims; it does not promise anonymity. |
The right choice depends on what is available and what you need to do. For routine browsing, a confirmed hotspot plus HTTPS and good account and device practices is generally reasonable. For a sensitive task, cellular data is another option when practical. A VPN is worth considering only if you are comfortable trusting its provider and have checked what the app does.
