Protection Idols refine armor at the Forge of Potential; Battle Idols are for weapons. Bring an Idol whose material matches the gear, then select the item at the Forge and choose “Attempt Refinement.” The attempt can fail, destroying the gear and damaging your character, so use it only if you accept that risk.

Protection Idols are used to refine armor. Battle Idols are used for weapons. The Idol must match the material tier of the gear you want to refine; having an Idol of the wrong type or material will not meet the stated requirements.

The Forge of Potential is reported in the Mountains biome. The cited guide says an idol-shaped marker appears on the map when you are close. Its exact spawn location is not established. Guide author Christopher Livingston found it near Moder’s summoning altar in two worlds, but described that as an observation rather than a confirmed rule.
Prepare for the Mountains
Plan for cold before searching. Suggested in-game protection includes frost-resistance mead, a wolf-fur cape, or a wolf-fur armor chestpiece.

How to attempt a refinement
- Put the armor and a matching Protection Idol in your inventory. For weapons, use a matching Battle Idol instead.
- Find the Forge of Potential in the Mountains and interact with it.
- Select the gear you want to refine, then choose “Attempt Refinement.”
What happens if refinement fails
A failed attempt destroys the selected gear and damages your character. The cited guide says the gear’s crafting materials are returned, but the Forge cannot recreate the lost item. Approach at full health and attempt refinement only if losing that gear is an acceptable risk.
What a refinement may change
One example reported by PC Gamer guide author Christopher Livingston on September 10, 2026, involved a bronze sword: durability increased by 50 points, slash damage changed from 41 (11–24) to 47 (13–27), and block force rose from 25 to 30. Other stats reportedly stayed the same. This is a single reported result, not a guaranteed outcome or a complete formula for refinement.
