Use Privacy display selectively on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Open Settings > Display > Privacy display, or swipe down from the upper-right corner to open Quick panel and tap the Privacy display icon. For normal reading, leave the standard display active and configure Privacy display to appear only for supported apps, credential entry, or notification pop-ups. Reserve the strongest or continuous protection for moments when someone nearby could read the screen, because maximum protection can make images look washed out or less clear.
What Privacy display does—and which Galaxy supports it
Privacy display is a hardware-assisted viewing mode on the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. It narrows the range of angles from which on-screen content is easy to see, reducing the chance that a person beside you can read a message, account screen, or other private information. Samsung’s support documentation identifies the Galaxy S26 Ultra as the only supported model. Do not assume that a similarly named setting exists on other Galaxy phones.

The phone does not become invisible from the side. Samsung warns that some information can remain visible depending on the viewing environment, including the angle and screen brightness. The feature is therefore a way to reduce casual shoulder-surfing, not a guarantee that sensitive content is hidden. If disclosure would cause serious harm, turn the phone away, lower the screen’s exposure to others, or avoid opening the information in a public place.
Samsung also notes that menu wording and screen layout can change with the phone model, software version, and app version. The labels below match Samsung’s documented Galaxy S26 Ultra path; if your menus differ, look for “Privacy display” within the Display settings or Quick panel editor.

Turn Privacy display on
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap the Privacy display switch.
You can also use the shortcut:
- Swipe down from the upper-right edge of the screen to open Quick panel.
- Tap the Privacy display icon.
To reach the detailed controls from Quick panel, tap the Privacy display text area rather than only the icon. That opens the settings where you decide which situations should trigger the mode.
Set conditions so protection appears only when you need it
In Privacy display settings, open Conditions for turning on. Samsung lists three condition types. Selecting one or more makes the feature activate for those contexts instead of staying active for every screen.
Selected supported apps
Choose apps from the supported-app list when you want side-angle protection in specific places, such as a financial app that handles account information. Availability is limited to apps that Samsung supports; an app installed on the phone is not automatically eligible. If an app does not appear in the list, Privacy display cannot be assigned to it through this condition.

PIN, pattern, and password entry
The credential condition covers credential screens in Samsung or Google settings, the lock screen, and Secure Folder. It does not cover credential forms inside third-party apps. For example, a password page built into an unrelated app does not become protected merely because this condition is enabled.

Use this trigger when you mainly want to prevent someone nearby from learning an unlock pattern or seeing a system-account credential. It is narrower than turning Privacy display on for the whole phone and normally creates less visual disruption.
Notification pop-ups
Notification protection applies to the notification pop-up area. It does not privacy-protect the entire screen. A message preview that appears as a pop-up can therefore be shielded while you continue using the rest of the display in its ordinary mode. If private details are still exposed elsewhere—for example, in an app you opened yourself—this condition does not cover them.

A readability-first configuration
Start with the smallest set of triggers that matches your risk. This keeps ordinary text, photos, video, and web pages in the normal viewing mode for most of the day.
- Enable the feature in Settings or Quick panel. Confirm that the on-screen appearance changes when the switch is active.
- Open Conditions for turning on. Select supported apps, credential entry, notification pop-ups, or a combination.
- Test each trigger deliberately. Open one selected app, lock the phone and enter a supported credential, and wait for a notification pop-up. Check that the mode appears only where expected.
- Remove conditions that create annoyance. If a supported app is one you read for long periods and the altered image is tiring, deselect it and use the Quick panel switch only for brief, high-risk tasks.
- Use broad or maximum protection temporarily. Turn it on before reading private material in a crowded train, café, waiting room, or meeting, then return to the normal mode when the situation ends.
This approach treats readability as the default and privacy as a targeted control. It also avoids assuming that every app, every credential form, or every notification is covered.
Selective activation versus continuous maximum protection
| Approach | Side-angle protection | Front-on readability | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selective conditions | Applied when a supported app, supported system credential screen, or notification pop-up triggers it | Normal display remains available for other activities, so reading and media use are usually more natural | Everyday use when privacy is needed only in particular contexts | Unsupported apps and third-party credential pages are outside the listed triggers |
| Manual, temporary activation | Protection can cover a broader session while the switch is on | Depends on the selected strength and content; stronger settings may look less clear | A short task in a public place or beside someone you do not want reading over your shoulder | You must remember to switch it off when finished |
| Continuous or maximum protection | Strongest side-view reduction offered by the feature | Most likely to show reduced perceived brightness, contrast, or clarity | Situations where preventing side viewing matters more than a natural image | It is not an absolute blackout, and the visual trade-off can be obvious |
There is no universal best setting. The right choice depends on how often people are close enough to see your screen, how sensitive the content is, and how much image change you can comfortably tolerate.

What the screen may look like in stronger modes
Privacy display changes the owner’s view as well as the view from the side. The effect varies with the selected mode, content, brightness, display settings, and the observer’s position.
Front-on experience
WIRED reviewer Julian Chokkattu reported that the Galaxy S26 Ultra remained readable straight on in his setup and wrote, “I haven’t seen any fuzzy text, and brightness hasn’t been a problem for me either.” His assessment was made after setting the phone to Quad HD+ resolution and Vivid color mode. That is one reviewer’s experience under stated settings, not a promise that every owner will see the same result.
Maximum Privacy and dark areas
LTT Labs compared SDR images at 0, 30, and 60 degrees off-axis with brightness maximized and auto-brightness disabled. Using a Konica Minolta LS-150 under low, nonzero ambient light, it measured roughly 15–20 nits in dark display regions in Maximum Privacy mode. The lab said those regions looked washed out even when viewed head-on. This figure describes dark portions of the test images under those conditions; it is not a whole-screen brightness specification and should not be applied to every scene or environment.
Why reviewers describe a cost
Android Central reviewer Nicholas Sutrich described selected apps, credential entry, and notification pop-ups as the least intrusive way to use the feature. In the same review, he characterized continuous use as cutting brightness and resolution because half the pixels are turned off. That is the reviewer’s explanation of the observed side effect, not a Samsung specification. Together, the independent reports show why a selective setup is a sensible readability-first choice.
How to use it in common situations
Reading an account or payment app in public
Add the supported financial app to the selected-app list. Open it only after confirming that Privacy display has activated. Keep normal mode for general browsing, then remove the app from the list if you find that long reading sessions look uncomfortable; use the Quick panel switch for short transactions instead.

Unlocking the phone near other people
Enable the credential-entry condition. It protects the lock screen and supported Samsung or Google settings, as well as Secure Folder. Positioning still matters: someone may see the phone’s outline, your hand movement, or other context even when the credential characters are harder to read. A third-party app’s own login page is not covered by this condition.
Receiving messages during a meeting or commute
Enable notification pop-up protection so the preview area is less exposed. Remember that this does not mask the entire display. If the message is highly sensitive, avoid opening it until you can orient the screen away from nearby viewers.
Watching video or viewing photos
Leave Privacy display off unless side viewing is an immediate concern. These activities make changes in contrast, brightness, or color more noticeable, and the selective conditions let you keep the ordinary display for entertainment while still protecting designated apps and pop-ups.
Working outdoors
Bright surroundings and a high screen-brightness setting can change how much a person at an angle can see. Samsung’s caveat specifically makes the viewing environment relevant. Treat Privacy display as an additional barrier, not a replacement for turning your body, covering the screen with your hand, or postponing sensitive work.
What Privacy display cannot guarantee
- No perfect invisibility: Samsung Newsroom US states, “When activated, some information may still be visible to others depending on the viewing environment, such as angle or brightness.”
- No universal app coverage: The supported-app list controls which apps can trigger protection; unsupported apps are not included.
- No third-party credential coverage: The credential condition applies to Samsung or Google settings, the lock screen, and Secure Folder, not credential screens inside third-party apps.
- No unchanged image guarantee: Stronger modes can alter perceived brightness, contrast, resolution, or clarity, with the most pronounced effects reported in Maximum Privacy.
- No guarantee across Galaxy models: Samsung documents this feature for the Galaxy S26 Ultra only.
Troubleshooting when it does not behave as expected
The option is missing
Check the model name first. Samsung documents Privacy display only for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. If you have that model but cannot find the control, install available system updates and search Settings for “Privacy display.” Menu labels can vary by software version.
Best Value
- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
- Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
- Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
- 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
- Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).
A chosen app does not trigger protection
Return to Settings > Display > Privacy display > Conditions for turning on and verify that the app is listed and selected. If it is not listed, it is not one of the supported apps for this condition. Use the Quick panel switch manually for a short session if you need broader protection.
A third-party login remains exposed
This is expected when you rely on the credential condition. That trigger covers the lock screen, Samsung or Google settings, and Secure Folder; it does not extend to credential forms created inside third-party apps. Select the app itself, if supported, or activate Privacy display manually before entering the password.
The screen looks dim or washed out
Check whether Maximum Privacy or another stronger setting is active. Switch to a selective condition or turn the feature off for ordinary reading. If you still need protection, increase viewing distance from others and use the least intrusive trigger that covers the task. The LTT Labs measurement shows why dark portions can look especially washed out in Maximum Privacy, but its 15–20-nit result was specific to its test conditions.

Notification protection is limited to the pop-up area. It does not cover the rest of the screen after you open an app or pull down the notification shade. For a sensitive conversation, keep the phone oriented away from nearby viewers rather than relying on the pop-up condition alone.
A quick decision checklist
- Is the phone a Galaxy S26 Ultra? If not, Samsung does not document this feature for the device.
- Do you need protection only for certain apps, credentials, or pop-ups? Use the corresponding conditions.
- Are you about to enter a sensitive system credential? Confirm the credential condition is enabled, and remember its third-party-app limitation.
- Will you be reading for a long time? Avoid continuous Maximum Privacy unless side-view risk outweighs the visual trade-off.
- Could the environment expose the screen through angle or brightness? Add physical precautions; Privacy display is not a blackout.
- Did the screen become uncomfortable? Return to normal mode and use a narrower trigger for the next task.
Sources and the evidence behind the trade-off
Samsung Canada’s support page, last updated March 20, 2026, documents the Galaxy S26 Ultra compatibility, setup paths, and activation conditions. Samsung Newsroom US described the angle-and-brightness caveat on March 10, 2026. WIRED’s review by Julian Chokkattu, LTT Labs’ March 1, 2026 measurement report, and Android Central’s March 16, 2026 review provide independent observations of readability and the visual cost of stronger settings. The lab result is a device-specific measurement under stated test conditions, not a population survey or a guarantee of every owner’s experience.
