How to use pplx-embed-v2-late to build a semantic search system

Use pplx-embed-v2-late as a late-interaction retriever, not as a conventional single-vector embedding model. Encode documents with encode_document, encode incoming searches with encode_query, retain the resulting token-level vectors, and rank candidates with MaxSim. MaxSim finds the strongest document-token match for each query token and adds those scores together.

This design preserves several independent matching signals inside one query-document comparison. The practical consequence is that your ingestion pipeline, index, storage estimates and evaluation must be designed for multiple vectors per record. The model publisher does not prescribe a vector database, chunk size, hardware minimum or universal benchmark threshold, so those choices must be validated on your corpus.

What pplx-embed-v2-late is

pplx-embed-v2-late is a family of multimodal, ColBERT-style retrievers built on Qwen3.5 with bidirectional attention. Instead of reducing an entire passage or image to one pooled vector, it emits a 128-dimensional vector for each token-level representation. A query and a document therefore remain collections of vectors until scoring time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The family has two published variants. The model card reports active parameter counts of 340 million for the 0.6B model and 7.4 billion for the 9B model. Both variants use the same embedding space, which enables a 0.6B query encoder to search an index created with the 9B encoder, provided you verify relevance and operating costs for your own workload.

These percentages are the model card’s ViDoRe v3 results, not a promise about a new collection. They are useful context when planning an evaluation, but they do not predict ranking quality on your documents.

How late interaction and MaxSim work

Suppose a query produces vectors q1 ... qm and a document produces d1 ... dn. MaxSim computes the strongest document match for each query token and sums those maxima:

score(query, document) = Σi=1..m maxj=1..n similarity(qi, dj)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A query containing several concepts can therefore match different parts of a document without forcing all meaning into one centroid vector. Perplexity’s explanation of the approach is that, for a fixed embedding dimension and a large enough corpus, some score patterns cannot be produced by a single-vector representation regardless of training. Read the full rationale in Perplexity’s “Multimodal embeddings beyond a single vector”.

Late interaction does not remove the need for candidate retrieval. You still need an index or search procedure that can narrow a large collection to candidates, then apply the model’s multi-vector scoring accurately. A conventional nearest-neighbor operation over one pooled vector is not an equivalent implementation.

The official local example uses Sentence Transformers’ MultiVectorEncoder. The model card lists these minimum package versions:

pip install "sentence-transformers>=6.0.0" "transformers>=5.4.0"

Load one model variant and select a device. The model card shows CUDA in its example; a CUDA-capable GPU is not established as a universal requirement, so check the memory and speed of your chosen runtime before committing to a deployment.

from sentence_transformers import MultiVectorEncoder

model_name = "perplexity-ai/pplx-embed-v2-late-9b"
model = MultiVectorEncoder(model_name, device="cuda")

queries = ["How do I rotate application logs safely?"]
documents = [
    "Applications should rotate logs by size or time and retain compressed archives...",
]

query_vectors = model.encode_query(queries)
document_vectors = model.encode_document(documents)
scores = model.similarity(query_vectors, document_vectors)
print(scores)

For the smaller model, replace the name with perplexity-ai/pplx-embed-v2-late-0.6b. Keep the query and document calls separate: they are the model’s intended paths for their respective roles. The returned representations are multi-vector outputs, so persist them as token-vector collections rather than averaging them into one vector.

Choose the searchable record before encoding

Decide what one search result means before building the index. Common record units include:

  • A passage or section from a text document.
  • An entire document when users need document-level discovery.
  • An image such as a diagram, screenshot or photograph.
  • A rendered page from a PDF when the visual page itself is the relevant result.

Give every record a stable source ID. Store the title, URL or file reference, page or section location, access permissions and any fields required to render the result. The model does not define this schema; it is what lets a token-vector match become a useful, attributable search result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no publisher-prescribed chunk length or context limit in the available model documentation. Start with boundaries that preserve meaning in your material—such as headings, procedures or page regions—then compare alternatives with judged queries. Smaller records can improve pinpointing but increase record count and indexing work; larger records provide more context but may produce less precise result locations.

Ingest documents and preserve their vectors

  1. Normalize the source. Extract the text or prepare the image while retaining its source ID and location. Do not discard page, section or permission metadata.
  2. Encode with the document path. Pass text records to encode_document. For image records, follow the image-input form shown in the model card rather than converting the image to an invented text description.
  3. Persist the multi-vector representation. Store each record’s token vectors alongside its source ID and metadata. Record the model name and software versions so an index can be rebuilt consistently.
  4. Build candidate retrieval. Select an index implementation that supports the multi-vector candidate strategy you need. The model sources do not endorse a particular database or library. Compare its candidate set and scores with a small, transparent reference implementation of MaxSim before relying on an optimized path.
  5. Keep source mapping intact. Candidate IDs must map back to the original record, not merely to an internal vector position. This is especially important when one document has many passages or pages.

A minimal correctness check can use the same encoder to score a small set directly:

test_queries = ["log rotation policy"]
test_docs = [
    "Rotate logs daily and retain seven compressed copies.",
    "The service exposes a health-check endpoint.",
]

q = model.encode_query(test_queries)
d = model.encode_document(test_docs)
direct_scores = model.similarity(q, d)
print(direct_scores)

Use this direct score as a reference when testing your production candidate-generation and ranking code. If the optimized index produces a different ordering for the same candidates, investigate token masking, score aggregation, precision and ID mapping before tuning relevance.

Run a query through the search pipeline

  1. Receive and normalize the query. Apply the same language, access-control and logging policies used by the rest of your search service.
  2. Encode it with encode_query. Do not send a query through encode_document simply because both inputs are text.
  3. Generate candidates. Use your multi-vector index or another candidate method to obtain a manageable set of records. Keep enough candidates to protect recall; the right count depends on your corpus and latency budget.
  4. Apply MaxSim scoring. Use the model’s similarity behavior or a verified equivalent over the query and candidate token vectors.
  5. Sort and render. Return source title, snippet or image preview, location and permissions from the metadata associated with each winning record.

Because the score sums one best match per query token, inspect several query types during testing: exact names, paraphrases, multi-concept requests and queries whose answer appears in a small part of a long record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add image and rendered-PDF retrieval

The model card demonstrates an image encoded as a document and compared with a text query. Perplexity also describes retrieval over rendered PDF pages without requiring OCR or parsed text. This is useful when layout, charts or scanned visuals carry meaning that a text extraction pipeline would lose.

Use multimodal records only where they solve a real retrieval problem. A text-only corpus is simpler to index and usually easier to inspect; a visual corpus may justify the additional representation and scoring cost. Decide whether users should receive a passage, an image, or a whole rendered page, and preserve that unit in your metadata.

Follow the batching constraint in the model-card example: keep text-only and image-only inputs in separate batches. Mixed text-plus-image inputs in a single batch are not supported by that example. If a request needs both modalities, encode them in separate calls and combine results at the application layer.

Choose between the 0.6B and 9B variants

The larger model has more active parameters and higher published ViDoRe v3 scores, but those facts do not establish the best choice for every collection. Compare the variants on the dimensions that affect your service:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Index-build cost: measure document-encoding throughput and the time needed to rebuild or update the index.
  • Query cost: measure encoding latency and MaxSim latency at your expected concurrency.
  • Storage: count the token vectors generated by your actual record boundaries and the storage format used by your index.
  • Relevance: evaluate judged queries from your own users, including difficult and multilingual cases if they occur in production.
  • Operational fit: verify that the chosen runtime, device and precision settings meet your memory and availability requirements.

The shared embedding space creates a third option: encode the corpus with the 9B model and use the 0.6B model for queries. This can reduce query-side cost while preserving a 9B-created index, but it is a deployment hypothesis to test, not an automatic guarantee. Compare it with same-variant indexing on relevance, latency and failure recovery.

Evaluate the system on your corpus

Build a small, versioned evaluation set before optimizing production infrastructure. For each representative query, record the records that should be returned and, where possible, their preferred order. Include short and long queries, ambiguous wording, rare entities, visual-only answers and permission-sensitive cases.

Track at least these measures:

  • Ranking quality: nDCG@k for graded judgments and recall@k for whether a relevant record appears at all.
  • Latency: query encoding, candidate generation, MaxSim scoring and total response time at realistic concurrency.
  • Index footprint: stored token vectors, auxiliary structures and metadata.
  • Throughput: records encoded per minute during initial indexing and incremental updates.
  • Stability: score and ranking changes after model, dependency, precision or index updates.

Compare against a baseline that your team understands, such as your current keyword search or a single-vector retriever. The goal is not to reproduce a published leaderboard number; it is to establish whether late interaction improves the queries that matter enough to justify its storage and compute costs.

Separate indexing from serving

Document encoding is usually a batch operation, while query encoding and scoring are latency-sensitive. Keep the index-build pipeline independently scalable, and publish a completed index atomically so a failed rebuild cannot leave mixed model versions in production.

Plan updates around record identity

When a passage, page or image changes, replace the vectors for that stable record ID and remove stale representations. Keep source metadata and access rules synchronized with the vector entry; a highly relevant result that a user cannot open is still a search failure.

Do not assume a particular GPU or database

The CUDA device in the official example is a usage choice, not a stated hardware requirement. Benchmark the selected variant on the hardware and runtime you can operate, and verify compatibility before purchasing capacity. Likewise, choose an index technology based on its multi-vector support, filtering behavior, update model and measured latency rather than treating a vendor or database as part of the model specification.

Troubleshoot common implementation mistakes

Every document has one vector

Symptom: the implementation uses one cosine-distance vector per record. Fix: retain the token-level output and implement candidate scoring with MaxSim. Pooling changes the representation the model was designed to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Query and document encoders are swapped

Symptom: rankings are unstable or unexpectedly weak even on obvious matches. Fix: call encode_query for user searches and encode_document for indexed records, then verify both paths in a direct scoring test.

Text and images are sent in one batch

Symptom: an input batch fails or produces an unsupported shape. Fix: issue separate text-only and image-only encoding calls, then merge results using your own record and modality metadata.

The published benchmark is treated as a target guarantee

Symptom: a team expects its corpus to achieve the ViDoRe v3 percentages. Fix: create judged queries for the actual collection and measure nDCG, recall, latency and storage locally. Published evaluations describe their own datasets and conditions.

The 0.6B query model is assumed to be interchangeable without testing

Symptom: a 9B-built index is queried with 0.6B and relevance changes unexpectedly. Fix: use the shared-space capability as an experiment, compare it with same-variant encoding, and keep the split only if your evaluation supports it.

A practical decision

Choose pplx-embed-v2-late when your search problem benefits from matching several query concepts to different parts of a passage, image or rendered page, and you can operate a multi-vector index. Start with the 0.6B or 9B model that fits your measured latency and indexing budget, preserve every record’s token vectors and metadata, and let corpus-specific evaluation—not a generic leaderboard score—decide the final architecture.
