Google Photos’ Photo remix uses AI-powered templates to turn a backed-up photo into a new creation you can save or share. In the Android app, open Create, choose Remix your photos or Photo remix, then select a template and follow the prompts. The feature is not available to every user, and Google cautions that results can be unexpected or inaccurate.
What Photo remix does
Photo remix is a template-based creation tool in Google Photos. Google Photos Help describes it this way: “It simplifies the creative process through AI templates to help you reimagine your photos into unique, shareable creations with just one tap.” You browse available styles, choose one for a photo, and let the app generate a result.

It is one of several tools in Google Photos’ Create area, alongside options such as Photo to video, Video remix, cinematic photos, collages, animations, and highlight videos. These are separate creation formats, not alternate names for Photo remix.
Who can use Photo remix
Google’s Android guidance says the selected photo must be backed up and the app needs a network connection. The Android help page also requires a personal Google Account; Workspace and school accounts are not eligible. Its general age guidance is 13 or older, but Photo remix itself is restricted to users who are at least 18.

Availability and functionality can vary by location and platform, and Google says some features are unavailable in some regions. The steps below are for Android; if the labels or options differ, look in the app’s current Create area. How to make a Photo remix on Android
- Open Google Photos and tap Create.
- Find Remix your photos or Photo remix. Browse the featured templates, or view and filter the available choices.
- Select a template and follow the on-screen prompt to choose or confirm the photo. Some templates are marked as personalized and use insights from your life; Google says some of these do not require an image upload.
- Wait while Google Photos generates the creation. On the result screen, choose the option to save or share it.
How Photo remix differs from other creation tools

What to expect from the generated result
Google warns that generative AI creations may be unexpected or inaccurate. Treat a remix as a new interpretation of a photo, not a faithful edit: the result is not guaranteed to preserve every person, object, or detail. Review it before saving or sharing.

In an August 12, 2025 Google Photos Community post, Google employee and Community Manager Rebecca V. described Remix as experimental and suggested that a well-lit, focused, front-facing portrait of one or a few subjects may work better. That is Google’s input-photo guidance, not a guarantee of a particular result.

Generation limits and Google AI plans
Google says daily photo and video generations are limited and that buying a Google AI plan increases the number of generations. Its cited help guidance does not give a stable universal quota or plan price. A paid plan is therefore not established as a requirement to use Photo remix; it is relevant only if you need a higher generation allowance.
