How to Use One Remote with Apple TV 4K, Fire TV Cube, and Your TV

Short answer: you can use HDMI-CEC and infrared (IR) to make one remote handle your TV’s power, input, and volume while Apple TV 4K and Fire TV Cube remain connected. Official Apple and Amazon instructions do not verify one remote that fully navigates both streaming platforms. The Siri Remote is documented for Apple TV 4K and television control; the Alexa Voice Remote is documented for Fire TV Cube and television power and volume. App navigation remains platform-specific, so keep both streaming remotes available unless you have tested a particular universal remote with your exact models.

What one remote can—and cannot—control

There are three separate control jobs in this setup:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Television functions: power, volume, mute, and input selection.
  • Apple TV 4K functions: tvOS menus, apps, playback, Siri, and Apple TV settings.
  • Fire TV Cube functions: Fire TV menus, apps, playback, Alexa, and Fire TV settings.

HDMI-CEC can let a streaming device wake the television, select its HDMI input, and send some volume commands through the TV or receiver. IR can send traditional television commands directly. Neither method automatically translates every Apple TV command into a Fire TV command or every Fire TV command into a tvOS command.

That distinction determines the practical answer:

Goal What the cited official setup guides establish Most dependable approach
Turn the TV on or off Apple TV 4K and Fire TV Cube can be configured for TV control; behavior depends on CEC, IR, and the TV model. Enable HDMI-CEC, then configure each device. Keep IR as the fallback.
Change TV volume or mute Apple offers HDMI, IR, automatic, and learning options. Fire TV Cube can control TV volume after Equipment Control setup. Use CEC first; select TV via IR or learn the TV remote if CEC is unreliable.
Switch between Apple TV and Fire TV inputs CEC may coordinate input behavior, but exact switching differs by TV and firmware. Use the TV remote’s Input button when automatic switching is inconsistent.
Navigate Apple TV apps with the Fire TV remote Not verified by the cited Amazon or Apple documentation. Use the Siri Remote or another remote specifically tested for Apple TV 4K.
Navigate Fire TV apps with the Siri Remote Not verified by the cited Apple or Amazon documentation. Use the Alexa Voice Remote or another remote specifically tested for Fire TV Cube.
Use one physical universal remote for all three Possible in some model-specific installations, but no cited guide confirms complete cross-platform navigation. Treat a universal IR remote as a TV/Apple TV option unless its compatibility list and your own testing cover Fire TV Cube navigation.

In other words, a one-remote arrangement is realistic for shared TV controls. A guaranteed one-remote replacement for both streaming remotes is not established by the official instructions available for this setup.

How the control methods work

HDMI-CEC: commands over the HDMI cable

HDMI-CEC is a control channel built into HDMI. When enabled on the television and supported by the connected device, a streaming box can request actions such as waking the TV, selecting its input, or passing volume commands to a receiver or television. CEC is not a universal language for every app command. Each manufacturer implements it slightly differently, and a TV update or model-specific setting can change the result.

Television manufacturers use different names for CEC. Amazon’s Fire TV documentation lists these examples:

Television brand CEC menu name listed by Amazon
Samsung Anynet+
LG SIMPLINK
Sony BRAVIA Sync
Sharp AQUOS Link
Toshiba CE-Link or Regza Link
Panasonic VIERA Link
Philips EasyLink
Roku TV CEC
Vizio CEC

The exact menu path and available switches vary by model and software version. Look under settings such as External Inputs, Devices, HDMI, System, or Equipment Control, then turn on the setting for CEC and, if offered, device power or input control.

Infrared: direct line-of-sight commands

IR works like a conventional remote: the remote sends a light signal to a receiver on the television or other equipment. The remote must have a suitable path to the receiver. Apple provides IR volume choices and a learning mode for Apple TV 4K. Fire TV Cube contains an internal IR blaster that can control entertainment equipment after setup.

If the Cube or the equipment it controls is inside a cabinet, Amazon supports an IR transmitter extension cable with a 3.5 mm jack. Place the extension’s emitter on the same shelf as the controlled device and aim or position it so the device’s IR receiver can see it. An extension improves placement; it does not turn the Cube into a guaranteed cross-platform app remote.

Network-based control

Apple also supports adding a network-based remote through the Home app on an iPhone or iPad. This is an Apple TV control method, not evidence that the Home app can navigate Fire TV apps. It can be useful when the Siri Remote is misplaced, provided the iPhone or iPad and Apple TV are available on the expected home network.

Prepare the hardware before configuring remotes

  • Connect Apple TV 4K directly to an available HDMI input on the television whenever possible.
  • Connect Fire TV Cube directly to another available HDMI input using a high-speed HDMI cable from the TV-facing connection described in Amazon’s setup instructions.
  • Connect a receiver or sound system according to your normal home-theater layout. Decide whether volume should be sent to the TV or receiver.
  • Have the original TV remote available. You may need it to enable CEC, confirm inputs, or teach Apple TV an IR command.
  • Leave space around the Fire TV Cube’s IR path. If the Cube or controlled equipment is enclosed, prepare a compatible 3.5 mm IR transmitter extension.
  • Write down which HDMI input holds each device. This makes testing and manual recovery faster.

Direct HDMI connections reduce variables. Soundbars, AV receivers, HDMI switches, and capture devices can add their own CEC behavior, so test the simplest wiring first and add intermediate equipment only after the basic functions work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: enable HDMI-CEC on the television

  1. Open the TV’s Settings menu with the original TV remote.
  2. Find the HDMI, External Inputs, Devices, or System section.
  3. Turn on the CEC feature using your TV brand’s name from the table above.
  4. If separate options appear for device power, auto input switching, or receiver control, enable the ones you want to test.
  5. Save the settings, then power-cycle the TV and both streaming devices if the TV does not immediately detect them.

CEC is the first choice for shared power, input, and volume because it travels over HDMI and does not require aiming a remote. It is also the least predictable part of the arrangement: two televisions with the same brand can expose different options, and firmware can alter behavior. Continue with the device-specific setup instead of assuming that enabling CEC alone completes the installation.

Step 2: configure Apple TV 4K for TV control

Use the Siri Remote with CEC

  1. On Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices.
  2. Under Home Theater Control, select Control TVs and Receivers or Turn On Your TV with Your Remote, depending on the wording shown on your software version.
  3. Open Volume Control and choose Auto or HDMI.
  4. Test volume, mute, TV power, and input behavior from the Siri Remote.

Apple’s specifications describe control of a TV or receiver via IR or CEC and identify the Siri Remote as the included remote for Apple TV 4K. CEC may allow the Siri Remote to wake the TV and adjust volume without a direct IR path.

Use IR when CEC is unreliable

  1. Return to Settings > Remotes and Devices.
  2. In Volume Control, choose TV via IR or Receiver via IR, matching the device that actually controls sound.
  3. If the listed profiles do not work, select Learn New Device.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts, pressing the requested buttons on the original TV or receiver remote when Apple TV asks for them.
  5. Repeat the volume and mute test, then test power and input separately.

Apple also provides a broader IR learning path: open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote and follow the prompts. Apple describes this as support for a supported TV or receiver remote, a network-based home-control remote, or an infrared remote commonly called a universal remote.

Step 3: configure Fire TV Cube’s Equipment Control

  1. On Fire TV Cube, open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment.
  2. Choose the option to add or configure the television, then follow the on-screen equipment-control prompts.
  3. When asked, identify the TV brand and test the power and volume commands.
  4. Confirm that the Alexa Voice Remote changes TV power and volume before leaving the setup screen.
  5. If you use a receiver for audio, add or configure it as the controlled audio device and test volume again.

Amazon states that, after equipment control is configured, the Alexa Voice Remote can control the TV’s power and volume. Fire TV Cube also uses its internal IR blaster to control entertainment equipment. CEC may be required for some Fire TV features, so leave the TV’s CEC setting enabled while testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install an IR extension for a cabinet setup

  1. Plug a compatible IR transmitter extension into the Fire TV Cube’s 3.5 mm IR-extension jack.
  2. Place the emitter on the same shelf as the television, receiver, or other equipment you want the Cube to control.
  3. Position the emitter near the equipment’s IR receiver without blocking ventilation or physical controls.
  4. Run the Fire TV Equipment Control test again.

The extension is specifically useful when the Cube itself is out of sight. If power works but volume does not, move the emitter and repeat the test; IR alignment and placement matter.

Step 4: test the arrangement in separate layers

Do not test everything at once. Use this order so you can identify whether a failure is caused by CEC, IR, an input, or app navigation:

  1. Apple TV layer: From the Siri Remote, open an Apple TV app, play content, adjust volume, mute, and wake the TV.
  2. Fire TV layer: From the Alexa Voice Remote, open a Fire TV app, play content, adjust volume, mute, and wake the TV.
  3. TV layer: Use the TV remote to select the Apple TV HDMI input, then the Fire TV Cube HDMI input. Confirm that both inputs display correctly.
  4. CEC layer: Turn the TV off, wake Apple TV, and observe whether the correct input is selected. Repeat with Fire TV Cube.
  5. IR layer: If CEC is disabled temporarily, test Apple TV’s TV-via-IR or learned commands and Fire TV Cube’s equipment control independently.

Record which remote performs each task. A practical final map might be: Siri Remote for Apple TV navigation and TV volume, Alexa Voice Remote for Fire TV navigation and TV volume, and the TV remote only for manual input selection. If both streaming remotes can power and adjust the TV reliably, you have effectively reduced daily remote swapping even though neither remote navigates the other platform.

Choosing the best one-remote strategy

Strategy What it does well Limitations Best fit
Siri Remote plus CEC Apple TV navigation, playback, and shared TV power or volume where CEC works. Not documented as a Fire TV Cube app remote; CEC behavior varies by TV. Homes that use Apple TV most often.
Alexa Voice Remote plus Equipment Control Fire TV navigation plus TV power and volume after setup. Not documented as a tvOS app remote; IR or CEC may need troubleshooting. Homes that use Fire TV Cube most often.
IR universal remote Can consolidate traditional TV or receiver commands and may learn Apple TV IR commands. No cited documentation confirms complete Fire TV Cube navigation across models. Users willing to verify exact device compatibility and keep a streaming remote as backup.
TV remote with CEC May switch inputs and control basic power or volume for connected HDMI devices. Streaming menus and app controls are not established for both platforms. Users who mainly need input and volume control.
Phone or tablet network remote Apple supports a network-based remote through the Home app on iPhone or iPad. This does not establish Fire TV app navigation and depends on network availability. Apple TV users who need a backup controller.

Do not buy a universal remote on the assumption that the word universal guarantees complete Apple TV 4K and Fire TV Cube support. Check the exact remote model’s device list, required hubs or emitters, and supported navigation commands. The official material cited here supports universal-remote learning for Apple TV and TV control, but it does not verify full Fire TV Cube navigation.

Troubleshooting common failures

The TV does not turn on when Apple TV or Fire TV starts

  • Confirm that CEC is enabled on the TV and that the streaming device is connected directly to an HDMI input.
  • Check Apple TV’s Settings > Remotes and Devices Home Theater Control option.
  • On Fire TV Cube, reopen Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment and repeat the TV test.
  • Power-cycle the TV and both streaming devices after changing CEC settings.
  • If CEC remains unreliable, use IR for the TV’s power command and ensure the remote or Cube has a clear path to the TV receiver.

Volume works from one remote but not the other

  • On Apple TV, try Auto, then HDMI, then TV via IR or Receiver via IR under Settings > Remotes and Devices > Volume Control.
  • Use Learn New Device if Apple TV’s built-in profile does not match the TV or receiver.
  • On Fire TV Cube, rerun Equipment Control and verify whether the TV or receiver, rather than both, should receive volume commands.
  • If the receiver controls sound, do not train Apple TV against the TV’s volume commands; choose the receiver path instead.

The wrong HDMI input appears

  • Use the TV remote to verify that Apple TV 4K and Fire TV Cube are connected to distinct, working inputs.
  • Temporarily disable automatic input switching or CEC power options to determine whether the TV is reacting to a competing device.
  • When automatic selection remains inconsistent, use the TV remote’s Input control. This is a normal fallback because CEC behavior is model- and firmware-dependent.

The Fire TV Cube cannot control equipment inside a cabinet

  • Confirm that the Cube’s internal IR path is not blocked.
  • Connect the supported 3.5 mm IR transmitter extension.
  • Place the emitter on the same shelf as the controlled equipment and move it until power and volume tests pass.
  • Keep ventilation clear; an IR extension should change signal placement, not require sealing the Cube into a confined space.

A remote navigates one platform but not the other

This is expected under the cited documentation. Apple’s remote-control instructions cover Apple TV 4K and connected TV or receiver functions. Amazon’s instructions cover Fire TV Cube navigation and TV equipment control. They do not establish cross-navigation between tvOS and Fire OS. Use the platform’s own remote for app menus, or verify a third-party controller against the exact devices before relying on it.

A practical daily workflow

  1. Use the Siri Remote when watching Apple TV. Its TV-control configuration can handle power and volume through CEC or IR.
  2. Use the Alexa Voice Remote when watching Fire TV Cube. Equipment Control can handle TV power and volume after its setup test succeeds.
  3. If the TV does not switch inputs automatically, press Input on the TV remote and select the labeled HDMI port.
  4. Keep the original TV remote in a drawer for configuration and recovery rather than trying to force either streaming remote to perform unsupported navigation.

This workflow gives you shared control of the television without claiming that one remote can operate both streaming systems. It also makes failures diagnosable: app commands belong to the platform remote, while power, input, and volume belong to CEC or IR.

Bottom line

Enable your TV’s HDMI-CEC feature, configure Apple TV 4K under Settings > Remotes and Devices, and configure Fire TV Cube under Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment. Use CEC first for shared power and volume, then switch Apple TV to IR or learn the TV remote if needed; use Fire TV Cube’s IR extension when cabinet placement blocks its signal. You can usually reduce the setup to one remote for basic TV control and one platform remote for whichever service you are watching, but the cited official guides do not verify a single controller that fully navigates both Apple TV and Fire TV Cube.
