Treat that note as a convenience copy—not as a GST Portal return record or proof that a return was filed. When the portal offers a relevant PDF or Excel download, keep that file too.
What a Web Clipper saves—and what it does not
Obsidian Web Clipper captures the current web page according to the active template. Its default approach tries to extract the main article, rather than preserve every element on the screen. The result is a note, not necessarily a faithful archive of an authenticated or dynamic GST Portal page. Obsidian’s help describes general web-page capture; it does not establish compatibility with every logged-in GST Portal page or guarantee that all content will be captured. Images are not automatically downloaded: a note may retain remote image URLs and depend on those resources remaining available. If a chart, table, or other visual matters, download attachments where possible or preserve a separate screenshot. Before relying on a clip, reopen it and check that the needed text and context are actually there.

Save a GST Portal page into Obsidian
- Sign in through your normal browser flow. Open the specific GST Portal page you want to reference. Do not give your portal credentials to a clipper or another third party.
- Open Obsidian Web Clipper. Use its browser toolbar icon, configured hotkey, or page context menu. The extension extracts page data using the active template.
- Review the proposed note. Check its title, relevant GSTIN or return-period labels for your own workflow, key text, and original URL. Confirm that the logged-in page has not been reduced to an incomplete or misleading fragment.
- Select the destination. Choose the intended Obsidian vault and folder, then select Add to Obsidian. Avoid placing taxpayer information in a shared vault or an unapproved sync destination.
- Preserve visuals separately if needed. Because images are not automatically downloaded, save relevant attachments or create a separate screenshot when visual context matters.
- Check the saved files. Reopen the note and any downloaded file, verify that each is readable and associated with the correct return period, and retain the source URL and capture date.
Keep the portal’s own return downloads
For return-related records, prefer the GST Portal’s own downloads when they are available. A Web Clipper note is useful as a reference to a page, but it should not replace official downloaded return material. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 user guide describes downloading e-invoice details to Excel and downloading a consolidated GSTR-1/IFF summary as a PDF. It also describes a download history for generated files.

For the e-invoice Excel flow covered by that guide, fewer than 500 available records download instantly; larger sets take time to prepare. Check the portal’s download history for a generated file rather than assuming it is ready immediately.
Keep any clip, portal download, and related notes together in a clearly named folder—for example, by return period and capture date—and back up the files to a destination approved for taxpayer information. Choose the right record for the job

A saved note or screenshot is not confirmation of filing, and it does not establish legal sufficiency or official status. Verify the return details in the portal before submitting. Troubleshooting incomplete or missing clips
- The note is missing sections or data: The clipper extracts page content and may not capture all logged-in or dynamic content. Compare the note with the page; use the portal’s download controls when available, or make a separate browser screenshot for visual reference.
- Images are broken or absent offline: The clip does not automatically download images. Save attachments or preserve a separate screenshot if those visuals are important.
- The page title or return period is unclear: Review the note before saving and add clear identifying information, such as the period and capture date, without exposing taxpayer data in an inappropriate destination.
- A portal export is not ready: For the e-invoice Excel flow, larger record sets may take time to prepare. Check the GST Portal’s download history for the generated file.
- You need proof of filing: A clip or screenshot is not proof. Check the portal and retain the appropriate portal-generated material for the filing workflow.
