What Homepage adds to an Obsidian home-lab workflow
Homepage is a way to choose what Obsidian opens as your starting point. Its listing says the destination can be a note, canvas, base, or workspace. You can configure it to open at startup, then use a command or ribbon button to return to it while Obsidian is already open. The listing says the plugin opens a note called Home by default, and that this can be customized: Homepage on the Obsidian community directory.

For a home lab, the useful distinction is between a front end and the services themselves. An Obsidian note can collect links to your router, server, NAS, or other web interfaces, along with notes and vault files you refer to often. Homepage makes that chosen Obsidian destination easy to reach; it does not itself monitor services, provide their controls, or ensure that a third-party page will display inside a note. Whether an external page can be embedded depends on that service’s and browser’s authentication and embedding rules.

- Create or choose a destination. Make a note for the lab landing page, or choose an existing note, canvas, base, or workspace. Add links to the interfaces and vault material you want to reach. Prefer ordinary links when you need a dependable path to a service; do not assume an embedded page will work without checking that service’s requirements.
- Install and enable Homepage. In Obsidian, open Settings and go to Community plugins, then browse for Homepage, install it, and enable it. Obsidian describes community plugins as user-built extensions; plugin availability, compatibility, and menus can change over time.
- Choose the destination in Homepage’s settings. Select the note or other supported destination you prepared. Configure startup behavior and, if useful, the handling of tabs that were already open, the view mode, and an Obsidian command to run when the homepage opens. The listing documents these options, though exact labels may vary between plugin versions.
- Reopen the page when needed. Use Homepage’s command or ribbon button to return to the landing page during a session. This is useful when you navigate away to edit a note and want a consistent route back to your lab links.
Choose between a landing page and a richer dashboard
Homepage suits the simple job of selecting a startup destination. If you want a page assembled from several kinds of vault content or widgets, other plugins describe broader dashboard features. Their listings do not make them interchangeable, and none guarantees that a protected external service will render inside Obsidian.

- Need a reliable starting point? Start with Homepage and a note containing links and vault references.
- Need to arrange several kinds of Obsidian content together? Compare Dashboard Hub’s listed content types with your actual needs.
- Need widgets or multiple pages, including on mobile? Check whether Home Pages’ listed features and device support match your workflow.
- Need an external service displayed inside the dashboard? Confirm that service permits embedding and that its sign-in flow works in Obsidian; a plugin’s feature list alone cannot establish either.
What this setup can—and cannot—replace
Obsidian’s value here is organization and navigation: one familiar place to collect links, operational notes, and frequently used vault content. A user-authored discussion about making an Obsidian dashboard describes wanting daily tasks and frequently edited files on one page, a similar organizational use rather than evidence of a universal dashboard pattern: ObsidianMD discussion.
A landing note is not a substitute for a dedicated monitoring, alerting, or administration tool. Keep those services responsible for their own data and controls. Use Obsidian to make them easier to find, and keep sensitive credentials out of ordinary notes unless you have deliberately chosen and secured an appropriate method for handling them.
