What OBS playlist automation can do
OBS’s VLC Video source plays a playlist of local media files. It is different from a regular Media Source, which plays an individual file. For a gaming channel, a playlist can hold authorized videos or other media you want to show in a scene; OBS does not turn a camera feed into a playlist.

Playback options cover two separate decisions: whether items play in order or shuffle, and whether the playlist repeats after its last item. You can also set how the source behaves when it is hidden by a scene change. Automation can mean simply letting a loop run, using a hotkey for manual control, or using a WebSocket-compatible tool to send source or scene commands.

Install OBS and VLC with matching architecture
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video source relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed.
- Match the applications’ architecture: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Prepare the local media files you have the right to livestream and archive. OBS lists formats such as MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM for Media Source video; supported formats can depend on the source and installed libraries.

Create and configure the playlist
- In OBS, select or create the scene where the playlist should appear.
- In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. Add the local media files to the source’s playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist if items should start again after the last item. Enable Shuffle Playlist if playback should use a randomized order rather than follow the list.
- Set the source’s visibility behavior. Depending on the selected option, playback can stop when hidden, pause, or restart when visible. Switch between scenes and verify that the result matches the intended show.
- Check that the source is layered and positioned correctly in the scene, and listen to the media through OBS before streaming.
Use an ordered, non-shuffled playlist when the sequence matters; use shuffle when the order can vary. A loop is suited to continuous playback, while turning it off leaves the playlist to play one pass. Test these choices rather than assuming that hiding a source pauses it.
Choose how to control playback
Let the playlist run on its own
For a hands-off loop, configure the playlist and its visibility behavior, then let OBS advance through the items. This needs no external control software, but you should still check that the playlist reaches the end and behaves as expected when the scene changes.

Use a hotkey or external control
OBS supports hotkeys for actions, while OBS WebSocket allows external software to control scenes and sources. WebSocket has been built into OBS since version 28. The protocol includes media input actions such as NEXT, but the exact behavior depends on the OBS version, source type and integration. Test the specific setup you intend to use.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a credential, not as ordinary setup text.
- For a scheduled stream, confirm OBS’s preview appears in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion.
- Run a private or unlisted test using representative gameplay and playlist audio. Choose quality settings your upload connection can sustain, check stream health, and monitor picture and sound during the test.
- If the stream key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Follow its live stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions.
Check channel eligibility and content rights
- Confirm live streaming is enabled and the channel is verified.
- YouTube requires that the channel have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check current channel status and the YouTube live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Make sure you are authorized to stream and archive the gameplay, game audio, background music and every playlist item. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder, warning, interruption or termination; an archived stream may receive a Content ID claim afterward.
- If you rely on a license, check whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel in Content ID. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights, including music rights, for live content.
Troubleshoot common failures
The VLC Video source is missing or will not load media
Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture. In particular, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS after installing VLC, then test the source again.

The playlist stops or restarts after a scene change
Review the source’s behavior when hidden. Stop, pause and restart-on-visible options have different effects. Switch scenes in a test session and choose the behavior that fits the broadcast.

The next-item command does nothing
Verify the selected source, OBS version and external integration. The WebSocket protocol supports media actions, but a command’s behavior depends on the source and integration. Test the command directly with the intended setup and use a password-protected WebSocket connection.

YouTube does not show the encoder preview
Confirm the selected stream URL and key in OBS match the stream selected in Live Control Room. Check the encoder connection and stream health, then test again before the scheduled broadcast. Reset and replace the key if it was exposed.
The stream is interrupted or its archive is claimed
Review the rights for the matched gameplay, music or playlist media. Remove or replace material you are not authorized to use; where applicable, ask the rights holder whether channel allowlisting is required. A private or unlisted test does not grant rights to use content publicly.
