Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore you submit an unfamiliar word in Words With Friends 2, build the play on the board and use Word Strength to check whether it is valid. Then check every other word the placement creates and use the in-game English dictionary if you want to learn what the word means. A general dictionary or Scrabble checker can offer clues, but the game’s own check is the one to trust for a Words With Friends play.
Check a new word before you commit the play
- Place the tiles for your intended word on the board, but do not submit the move yet.
- Use Word Strength to check whether the word formed is valid in Words With Friends 2. Zynga documents this feature as a validity check; the exact interface may vary by app version.
- Inspect the placement for every additional word it creates where your tiles touch existing letters. A move can form multiple words at once, and Zynga’s rules do not allow a placement that creates an illegal neighboring word.
- If the word is unfamiliar, use the in-game English dictionary to look up its definition. This explains the word; Word Strength checks whether the game accepts it.
- Once the main word and all new cross-words are valid, submit the play.
Zynga’s rule book documents that swapping tiles or passing uses the turn, but it does not specify a penalty for an invalid submission. Checking the move before committing avoids relying on an undocumented penalty.

Why a familiar dictionary may disagree with the game
Words With Friends uses a game-specific English word list. Zynga Player Support says its list draws on the Oxford English Dictionary, includes some words added by Zynga, and may grow over time. Its rule book states: “Words With Friends has more than 173,000 acceptable English words for use in the game.” The page did not state a publication year for that figure; it showed “Last Updated: 1d” when accessed on October 7, 2026. Read Zynga’s Words With Friends Rule book.
The rules allow entries identified as parts of speech, including foreign-origin, archaic, obsolete, colloquial, and slang words. They exclude proper nouns, abbreviations, standalone prefixes and suffixes, and words requiring a hyphen or apostrophe. So a word’s presence in an ordinary dictionary does not guarantee that the game accepts it—and a less familiar entry may still be playable.

When an external word finder helps—and when it does not
A third-party word finder or checker can help generate ideas from your rack or offer another reference. Some tools describe separate Words With Friends and Scrabble checks, but they are not Zynga’s confirmation of the current in-game list. Treat their results as suggestions, then test the actual board placement with Word Strength and inspect all resulting cross-words. The available guides do not establish that external lists stay synchronized with the current game.
| Checking option | Best use | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| In-game Word Strength | Checking whether a proposed play is valid in Words With Friends 2. | It is a validity check, not a definition lookup. |
| In-game English dictionary | Understanding an unfamiliar word’s definition. | A definition alone does not establish that the word is valid for a move. |
| External word finder or checker | Finding candidate words or getting an additional reference. | It does not provide Zynga’s official confirmation of the current game list or establish that all cross-words in your board placement are legal. |
Keep the check focused on the actual move
Do not check only the word you intend to spell: a tile placed beside existing letters can create additional words, and each must be accepted. Nor should you use a general dictionary or a Scrabble result as a substitute for the in-game validity check. Zynga documents Word Strength for checking playability and the English dictionary for looking up meaning; use each for its distinct purpose.
