To send a file, open it, tap Share, choose Quick Share or the label shown on your phone, select the nearby recipient, and have them accept. Both devices generally need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled and must be ready to be discovered; exact requirements and menu labels vary by model, software, carrier, and region.
Send a file to a nearby device
- Prepare both devices. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and enable Quick Share on the Galaxy phone. Older Nearby Share instructions also call out Location; follow the settings shown on your software version if it requests it.
- Choose what to share. Open a photo, video, document, or other file, tap Share, then choose Quick Share or Nearby Share. If you start in Quick Share instead, choose Send and select the file.
- Select the recipient. Keep the devices close and wait for the recipient to appear, then tap its name. The recipient may need to have the screen on; older instructions also advise keeping both devices unlocked.
- Accept and confirm. The recipient taps the incoming-share notification and accepts. Check for a “Sent” message or equivalent completion status on the sending phone.
Quick Share can also offer QR-code, link, or contact-based routes on supported devices. Those options are not the same as nearby direct discovery, and availability depends on device and software. Samsung describes these sharing routes in its Quick Share overview.

Receive files and control who can find your phone
Before receiving, enable Quick Share and set a visibility option that allows the sender to find you. Samsung’s current US guide lists No one, Your devices, Contacts, and Everyone (Only for 10 minutes). Older instructions may show fewer options or different wording, so use the choices available on your phone.

- Contacts: lets people in your contacts find the phone.
- Everyone for 10 minutes: useful for a person who is not in your contacts; access is time-limited.
- No one: turns off discovery by other devices.
Samsung US Support recommends using the “Your devices” or “Contacts” options. Change visibility back after a one-off transfer, especially if you enabled an Everyone option. Samsung’s older guide notes that devices on One UI 5 may detect images containing personal information, such as IDs or passports, and prompt users to consider Private Share. Treat sensitive files carefully; that prompt is not a guarantee that every Quick Share transfer has a particular privacy or encryption property.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting
Samsung’s regional support page gives a Galaxy-to-Galaxy baseline of Android 10.0 (Q) and One UI 2.1 or later for phones and tablets, and Galaxy Books released in 2020 or later. It also lists Samsung Account, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth requirements. Samsung cautions that availability and functions can differ by device, carrier, software version, and market, so the baseline does not guarantee every feature on every model. Share with a nearby Apple device
Samsung’s current US instructions describe a conditional Quick Share route to Apple devices. The Galaxy needs Quick Share app version 13.8.51.27 or later and Google Play services version 26.11.xx or later; feature support still depends on the Galaxy model and software.

- In Quick Share settings, enable Share with Apple devices.
- Set the Galaxy’s visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes.
- On the Apple device, set AirDrop visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes.
- Choose the Apple device when it appears in Quick Share’s nearby-device list, then complete the acceptance prompt.
Samsung warns that the Galaxy may temporarily disconnect from Wi-Fi while searching for or sharing with Apple devices. The steps and requirements are from Samsung’s current US Quick Share guide; availability is not universal.

The recipient does not appear
- Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on for both devices and Quick Share is enabled.
- Check that the receiving phone’s screen is on and its visibility setting permits the sender to find it.
- Move the devices closer and check for software updates.
- If discovery still fails, restart both devices.
The transfer will not start
Samsung’s US instructions say Quick Share cannot be used while the phone is using a mobile hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, or Smart View. Turn off the active mode and try again.

Secure Folder apps are missing from the share panel
Samsung’s older Nearby Share instructions describe settings to show Secure Folder apps in the share panel and permit background activity while the folder is locked. Menu names can differ by software version; look in Secure Folder settings for the sharing or app-visibility controls.
You are sharing a sensitive image
Review the image for personal details and location information before sending it. Samsung says Auto Blocker with Maximum restrictions enabled automatically removes location data from Gallery images shared. One UI 5 may also prompt about detected personal information. These behaviors depend on the relevant setting and software.

Why instructions may say Nearby Share or Quick Share
Samsung’s older US help article is titled “How to send files with Nearby Share on your Galaxy phone,” while its current US instructions use “Quick Share.” The feature name and available controls can vary across software versions; do not assume your device will show both labels at once.
