NASA Worldview lets you investigate an Australian location by date and satellite layer in a browser. Start with corrected-reflectance imagery for geographic context, then add the event layer: thermal-anomaly detections for fires, a colorized flood product for inundation, or comparable imagery from multiple dates for vegetation change.
Use the map as an observation and screening tool, not as a complete incident report. Clouds can hide fires, satellite overpasses leave gaps, and visual vegetation changes are not automatically measurements of plant health. For emergencies, follow Australian and local authorities.

What NASA Worldview shows—and what it does not
Worldview is an imagery browser rather than a single-purpose fire, flood, or agricultural-monitoring system. You choose a place, a date, a base image, and one or more overlays. The result is a map assembled from satellite products that can be inspected, compared with another date, or exported as an image.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor Australia, that distinction matters. A thermal-anomaly point indicates that a satellite product detected a signal consistent with intense heat; it is not a guarantee that every fire is represented or that a point marks the exact perimeter. A flood product is an interpreted satellite-derived layer, while ordinary reflectance imagery supplies visual context. Vegetation can be compared visually, but the available material does not establish a particular vegetation index or a validated quantitative vegetation-health workflow in Worldview.

A repeatable Australia workflow
The same sequence works for a bushfire, a flood, or a vegetation question. Establish the place and date first, then build the map in layers so that you know which image supports each observation.
- Open Worldview and locate the area. Search for an Australian state, town, river basin, coastline, park, or coordinates, then zoom until the feature of interest is visible. Keep the map extent wide enough to show surrounding terrain and downwind or downstream context.
- Choose the date to investigate. For a current event, select the most recent date available for the relevant product. For a historical event, use the event date and several dates before and after it. Write the date down; changing it changes every date-sensitive layer.
- Add corrected-reflectance imagery. Use a MODIS or VIIRS corrected-reflectance option as the geographic base. It helps identify coastlines, rivers, vegetation patterns, smoke, burn scars, and cloud cover.
- Add an event-specific overlay. Select a Fires and Thermal Anomalies layer for fire signals or open Worldview’s Flood category for a near-real-time flood product. For vegetation, begin with comparable reflectance imagery on two or more dates.
- Check visibility and order. Turn layers on and off one at a time. NASA’s Worldview booklet explains that only the top visible base layer is displayed; an image that seems to have disappeared may simply be underneath another visible base layer.
- Compare or export only after the map is readable. Use Comparison for two dates or two image types, and use Snapshots when you need a reproducible image with its settings recorded.
Track Australian fires
Choose complementary layers
Pair a thermal-anomaly layer with corrected-reflectance imagery. NASA’s 2025 Worldview booklet lists MODIS and VIIRS fire layers for daytime and nighttime, along with corrected-reflectance choices for both instruments. The fire layer displays detections as orange or red points. The reflectance image shows the surrounding landscape and can provide the visual context needed to interpret those points.
| Layer or view | What it contributes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| MODIS or VIIRS thermal anomalies | Satellite-detected hot spots, shown as orange or red points | A detection is an observation, not a complete fire perimeter or a guarantee that every fire is shown. |
| MODIS or VIIRS corrected reflectance | Landscape context, smoke, burn patterns, clouds, and visible fire-front clues | Interpretation depends on illumination, cloud cover, smoke, and the selected date. |
| False-color imagery | Can make a fire front or burned area easier to distinguish from surrounding land | Colors are a display of spectral information; do not treat them as a direct ground-temperature or damage measurement without product documentation. |
Read detections without overclaiming
After adding the layers, inspect whether the points form a cluster, line, or scattered pattern and whether that pattern aligns with smoke, a burn scar, or a known landscape feature in the reflectance image. Compare a nearby earlier date to determine whether the signal is new. A single point may be a small hot area, a transient event, or a detection affected by the sensor’s viewing conditions; it should not be expanded into an exact perimeter.

Clouds are a specific failure mode. The Worldview booklet cautions that clouds can obscure fire detection when fire data are displayed over imagery. A cloud-covered area can therefore look quiet even when a fire exists below it. Thick smoke, darkness, sensor overpass timing, and the spatial resolution of the selected product can also make a scene difficult to interpret. If the view is obscured, label the area as uncertain rather than inferring that no fire is present.
Daytime and nighttime products
MODIS and VIIRS options include daytime and nighttime fire layers. Choose the version that matches the question and the available imagery date. A nighttime detection can be useful when daytime smoke or glare complicates a scene, while daytime corrected-reflectance imagery generally supplies more familiar geographic context. Do not assume that a daytime and nighttime layer are interchangeable observations of the same instant; note the product and date shown in the interface.
Use the Australia bushfires story as a tutorial
NASA Worldview’s “Bushfires in Australia (Sep 2019 – Jan 2020)” story demonstrates the workflow with date-based imagery, VIIRS thermal anomalies, and corrected-reflectance imagery. It is a useful exercise for learning how the layers align across the 2019–20 bushfire period. It is historical material, not a report of current Australian fire conditions.

Track floods and changing water extent
Open the Flood category
In Worldview, open the Flood category and select a near-real-time flood layer for the Australian area. NASA’s MODIS/VIIRS NRT Global Flood Product User Guide describes colorized MODIS and VIIRS flood products available in Worldview. The colors are an interpreted product intended to highlight likely inundation, so read its legend and product information before drawing a boundary from the display.

Use corrected-reflectance imagery to see rivers, lakes, coastlines, roads, vegetation, and cloud conditions around the highlighted water. The flood guide describes a 7-2-1 corrected-reflectance band combination as a way to help visually evaluate water extent. Treat that combination as visual support, not as a standalone hydrological measurement.
- Select a date when flooding is suspected and turn on the flood product.
- Record the layer name and date, then add the reflectance image used for geographic context.
- Open Comparison and select an earlier, comparable date. A before-and-after view can show whether highlighted water expanded, contracted, or shifted.
- Use the swipe, opacity, or spy comparison mode available in the interface to inspect the same river reach, floodplain, or coastline in both views.
- Check for clouds, shadows, seasonal water, tidal changes, and differences in acquisition timing before attributing every color change to the flood event.
Worldview’s Comparison feature can compare flood products from different dates or compare a flood product with the imagery used to generate it. That makes it useful for screening and explanation, but it does not replace gauge data, engineering surveys, road-closure information, or local emergency instructions. Do not use a map screenshot to decide whether it is safe to enter water or travel through an affected area.

Follow vegetation change cautiously
For a visual vegetation review, select the same type of imagery for two or more Australian dates and keep the geographic extent fixed. Compare a dry-season date with a wet-season date, or inspect imagery before and after a fire, flood, storm, or drought period. The Comparison tool’s swipe, opacity, and spy modes help reveal where the landscape changed.
A practical visual sequence
- Choose a reference date with relatively clear imagery and note the season.
- Select a second date with the same area, a similar scale, and a comparable reflectance product where possible.
- Check cloud cover and smoke before interpreting any color or texture difference.
- Inspect several locations: an apparently healthy patch, a bare or burned patch, water edges, and a nearby area that should be stable.
- Describe what is visible—such as reduced green cover, a new bright bare area, or a shifted water edge—without calling it a measured change in plant health.
The available Worldview material does not establish a specific vegetation-index layer or a validated quantitative vegetation-condition method for this workflow. A change in color may result from season, sun angle, atmospheric conditions, soil exposure, harvest, fire, flooding, or sensor differences. If you need a numerical vegetation-health result, use a documented index and its product-specific methods rather than assigning a health score to an arbitrary RGB appearance.
Compare dates and layers correctly
Comparison is most useful when you change one meaningful variable at a time. To study a fire, compare the same reflectance product before and after the event, then inspect the thermal-anomaly layer for the event date. To study a flood, compare the flood product across dates or compare it with the corresponding reflectance image. To study vegetation, keep the imagery type and map extent as consistent as possible.
Best Value
| Question | Recommended comparison | What to document |
|---|---|---|
| Where were hot spots detected? | Thermal anomalies over corrected reflectance on the same investigation date | Instrument, daytime or nighttime option, date, cloud and smoke conditions |
| Did inundation expand? | Flood product on two dates, plus reflectance context | Product name, dates, cloud or tidal conditions, and the area compared |
| Did vegetation appearance change? | Comparable reflectance imagery on two or more dates | Season, sensor or product, cloud cover, and the exact visual observation |
In every comparison mode, verify that both selected layers are visible and that opacity has not been reduced so far that one image is effectively hidden. A dramatic visual difference can be an artifact of changing the base layer, date, projection, or stretch rather than a change on the ground.
Save a map with Worldview Snapshots
When you need to share or archive a view, use Worldview Snapshots rather than relying on an unlabelled screen capture. The Snapshots interface exposes controls for the date, map projection, geographic bounding box, output resolution, layers, and file format.
- Set the date and confirm that it applies to the layers you intend to show.
- Choose the map projection appropriate to the area and purpose.
- Define the geographic extent with the bounding box or the visible map area.
- Select the visible layers and arrange the stack so the intended base image is on top among base layers.
- Set the output resolution and file format, balancing detail against file size.
- Generate the snapshot and retain the settings, layer names, and date with the exported file.
A snapshot is a dated representation of the selected products, not a permanent guarantee that the source data are complete. Include a caption stating the date, products, geographic area, and that the map is for satellite observation or screening.

Troubleshoot a confusing map
An expected image is not visible
- Confirm the layer’s visibility toggle is on.
- Move the intended base layer above another visible base layer; only the top visible base layer is displayed.
- Check that the selected date has coverage for the Australian area.
- Reduce opacity or use Comparison to verify whether the image is underneath another layer.
Fire points appear to stop suddenly
- Inspect the reflectance image for clouds or smoke over the missing area.
- Check whether you selected daytime or nighttime data and whether the dates match.
- Zoom out and back in to distinguish a display or scale issue from a genuine gap.
- Report the result as incomplete coverage rather than treating the gap as proof that no fire exists.
Flood colors do not match the visible water
- Read the flood product’s legend and date.
- Compare the product with the imagery used to generate it, as recommended in NASA’s flood-product guidance.
- Consider clouds, shadows, seasonal wetlands, tides, and different acquisition times.
- Use a second date before concluding that water expanded or receded.
Vegetation colors changed dramatically
- Check whether the two images use the same sensor, product, date type, and display treatment.
- Look for cloud, haze, smoke, sun-angle, soil, harvest, or recent fire effects.
- Describe the visible change without converting it into a health measurement unsupported by the layer documentation.
Interpretation limits and responsible use
Satellite products provide a regional view, but they do not show every ground condition at every moment. Fires can be hidden by clouds or smoke; flood products can be affected by water, cloud, and timing conditions; and vegetation appearance changes for many reasons unrelated to plant stress. Spatial resolution also means that a point or colored patch may represent a mixed area rather than a single object on the ground.
For an active Australian incident, combine Worldview with official state and territory emergency services, fire agencies, flood warnings, road information, and local authorities. Worldview can help you understand where to look and how a scene changed, but it is not an emergency alerting or navigation system.
