Put all the transform functions in one transform declaration, separated by spaces: transform: translateX(10px) rotate(10deg) scale(1.1);. The functions compose in sequence, so changing their order can change the element’s final position and appearance.
Combine functions in one transform list
The transform property accepts a space-separated list of transform functions. Do not write a separate transform declaration for each operation: in the CSS cascade, a later declaration for the same property replaces the earlier value rather than adding to it.

Function order changes the result
A transform list is composed in order, with each function establishing a coordinate space for the next. As a result, changing the sequence can change where an element ends up, not just how the declaration reads. [MDN; MDN: Using CSS transforms]

}These declarations use the same values but in a different order, so the translation can follow a different direction. Put the operations in the sequence that produces the motion or orientation you intend, then check it on the actual element.
Use separate properties when components should be independent
CSS also provides individual translate, rotate, and scale properties. They are useful when those components are declared or changed independently, but their composition order is predefined: translate, then rotate, then scale, followed by the transform property. }There is no individual skew property, so skewing belongs in transform. Choose an ordered transform list when the sequence itself matters; choose individual properties when separate components are easier to manage and their fixed composition order suits the effect.
Set the pivot with transform-origin
transform-origin sets the point around which operations such as rotation and scaling are applied. Its initial value is centered at 50% 50%. }Account for layout and stacking effects
- A transform changes an element’s rendered appearance, not its place in normal document flow. Nearby content does not move to make room for the transformed element.
- A non-
nonetransform creates a stacking context and makes the element a containing block for positioned descendants. This can affect how its layers stack and how absolutely or fixed-positioned descendants are positioned. [MDN; W3C CSS Transforms Module Level 1] - Not every box is transformable. MDN notes exceptions including non-replaced inline boxes and table-column or table-column-group boxes. If a transform has no visible effect, check the target element and whether a competing CSS rule overrides it. [MDN]
Add a restrained hover effect
For a simple transition, declare the transition on the base element and the combined transform on its hover state:

- Only one operation appears to apply: Put the functions in one
transformvalue, separated by spaces, rather than relying on multiple declarations of the same property. - The element moves in an unexpected direction: Try a different function sequence; order affects the composed coordinate space.
- Rotation or scaling pivots around the wrong point: Set
transform-originexplicitly. - The transform appears to do nothing: Check whether the element is transformable and inspect the cascade for another rule overriding
transform. - A positioned child or layer behaves differently: Check whether the transformed ancestor has created a containing block or stacking context.
