A faster average crossing a slower one is another common signal. None proves that a trend will continue or, by itself, makes a trade suitable.
What a moving average can tell you
A moving average smooths past prices into a line on the chart. Because it is calculated from historical bars, it follows price rather than anticipating it. Its direction and the position of price relative to it can help you judge whether the recent pattern is broadly rising or falling, but the signal arrives after prices have moved.

Start by identifying the chart interval and the average’s period. A 50-bar average on a daily chart covers 50 daily bars; on an intraday chart it covers 50 intraday bars, not 50 days. The period is not meaningful without its chart interval and intended holding horizon.

Choose between an SMA and an EMA
| Type | How it weights prices | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Simple moving average (SMA) | Calculates the average price over the selected number of bars, with equal weighting. | Typically smoother; a longer period smooths more but responds with greater delay. [Fidelity] |
| Exponential moving average (EMA) | Gives more weight to recent prices. | Tracks price more closely and may show a change sooner, but is more sensitive to short-term price movement. [Fidelity] |
Neither type is universally best. The choice is a trade-off between responsiveness and smoothness, and a responsive line can also change direction more often.

Read a single average for trend context
- Set the chart interval and period. Confirm that the bars match the timeframe you intend to assess; do not treat daily and intraday averages with the same bar count as equivalent.
- Check the average’s slope. A line that is generally rising supports an uptrend interpretation; a generally falling line supports a downtrend interpretation. A nearly flat line offers little directional evidence.
- Compare price with the line. Price holding mostly above a rising average is consistent with an uptrend; price below a falling average is consistent with a downtrend. A brief move across the line is not conclusive by itself.
- Allow for delay. The average is built from past bars, so it cannot identify an exact top or bottom and may confirm only after a move is underway.
Fidelity describes the 200-bar SMA as a common proxy for the long-term trend and 50-bar SMAs as typically used for the intermediate trend. These are conventions, not settings validated for every stock, chart interval, or trading approach. [Fidelity]
Use a fast-and-slow crossover carefully
A crossover compares two averages of different periods. The shorter-period average is the faster line; the longer-period average is the slower line. Traders commonly read the faster line crossing above the slower one as bullish, and crossing below as bearish. These are lagging indications of changing price behavior, not forecasts.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Before interpreting a crossover, confirm which periods and chart interval you used. A crossover can be less informative when price is moving sideways: repeated crossings may reflect choppy movement rather than a sustained trend. The crossover alone does not establish an entry, exit, or risk limit.
Make the signal one part of a pre-trade decision
Use the average to describe trend context, then consider whether other evidence supports the decision. Fidelity notes that technical analysis may be used alongside other technical or fundamental analysis. [Fidelity]

- State the timeframe and the condition you are looking for before acting—for example, a rising average with price holding above it.
- Consider whether price is trending or moving sideways; averages can produce unreliable crossings in choppy conditions.
- Decide separately how you would manage risk. A chart signal does not determine a suitable position size or select an order type.
- Check your brokerage’s order-type availability and policies, which can vary by firm. [SEC]
Do not infer a strategy’s win rate or profitability from the presence of a moving-average signal. Back-tested performance is hypothetical and does not represent actual performance; past performance cannot predict future results.
