How to Use Maps and GPS Offline on Machu Picchu Hiking Routes

Your phone can locate you on the Inca Trail or Salkantay Trek without cell service or Wi‑Fi. The GPS receiver works from satellite signals, but an offline position is useful only if you download the map tiles, trail line and route corridor before leaving coverage. Use Google Maps Offline for roads, towns and transfers, and a hiking app with topographic maps and a saved GPX track for the trail itself. Check SERNANP notices, guide instructions and signs every day because landslides, weather and temporary diversions can make an older track unsafe.

What works offline—and what does not

GPS and internet access are separate systems. A modern phone calculates its position from satellite signals received by its location chip; it does not need a SIM connection, mobile data or Wi‑Fi for that calculation. Internet access is normally used to download map imagery, search results, route directions and updates. If those files are not stored on the phone, a GPS dot may appear over a blank screen.

Before you leave reliable connectivity, save both the base map and the route data. A complete offline setup contains:

  • Map tiles covering the whole hike and every transfer, not just the citadel.
  • A route line, preferably a GPX track from your operator or another current source.
  • Waypoints for trailheads, camps, passes, water points, lodges, stations and meeting places.
  • A second reference such as a screenshot, PDF or paper map.

Offline mapping is a navigation aid, not permission to enter a closed segment. A stored line can remain visible after a landslide, reroute or access change.

Choose the right map for your route

Classic and Short Inca Trail routes

Confirm whether your itinerary is the Classic Inca Trail, Short Inca Trail or a sanctuary day route. These names can describe different trailheads, camps and final approaches. SERNANP identifies the protected-area routes and publishes a downloadable tourist map; use that map for official naming and access context. The current SERNANP visitor page lists Inca Trail Network visitor hours of 05:30–14:00. Treat those hours and any reservation or entry rule as current only after checking the government page close to departure.

Salkantay Trek

The standard Salkantay route is described by the Salkantay Trek guide team (2026) as 60 km (37 miles), normally five days and four nights. Its highest point is 4,630 m (15,190 ft), and walking on days 1–3 commonly lasts six to seven hours. A map covering only Machu Picchu or Aguas Calientes therefore misses most of the navigation problem. Include the high pass, camps, road sections and any alternate approach used by your operator.

Sanctuary, Huayna Picchu and transfer days

Day routes inside the sanctuary, the final walk to Machu Picchu Pueblo, rail or road transfers and the connection to Cusco all need their own coverage. A hiking app may show a footpath while a road map is better for a station, hotel or pickup point. Download both layers rather than assuming one app is sufficient.

Google Maps Offline: useful for logistics, incomplete for trails

Google Maps is a practical offline layer for Cusco, towns, roads, stations, hotels, trailhead pickups and the Aguas Calientes area. While connected to dependable Wi‑Fi:

  1. Open Google Maps and search for the Machu Picchu region or your transfer corridor.
  2. Tap your profile picture, choose Offline maps, then choose Select your own map.
  3. Resize the rectangle so it includes Cusco, the trailhead, road or rail transfers, Aguas Calientes and sanctuary approaches.
  4. Tap Download and wait for completion on Wi‑Fi. Open the saved area afterward to confirm it appears in your offline-map list.

Google says an entire driving route must fit inside the downloaded area for offline use. Its product help also states: “When you’re offline, transit, bicycling, or walking directions are unavailable.” That limitation matters on a hiking trip: Google Maps can get you to a road, town or station, but it is not a complete Inca Trail or Salkantay navigation solution. Search and business data can also be stale or unavailable offline, so save important locations as pins before airplane mode.

Build a trail map in a hiking app

Gaia GPS workflow

Gaia GPS documents offline use of the device GPS and provides topographic map sources. Its support guidance says: “Your device does not need an internet connection (cellular or wifi) to provide GPS data.” To prepare a route:

  1. Open Gaia GPS while online and pan across the complete route.
  2. Tap Save Offline Maps, select a map source such as Gaia Topo, and choose a hiking-appropriate resolution.
  3. Draw a rectangle or several overlapping sections around the trail, camps, passes, detours, trailhead and final approach.
  4. Import the operator’s GPX file or save the correct route track. Check its date and description; a line with no current access information is only a planning reference.
  5. Wait until every selected section finishes downloading. On iOS, Gaia notes that downloads pause if the app leaves the foreground, so keep it open until completion.
  6. Switch the phone to airplane mode, reopen the map and verify that the topographic layer, contour lines, route line and waypoints remain visible.

Keep at least one zoom level that shows terrain and another that makes the footpath and track easy to distinguish. If one rectangle is too large for your device’s storage or the app’s download limit, use overlapping sections rather than leaving a gap.

AllTrails as a secondary source

AllTrails’ help center says Plus and Peak members can download maps ahead of time. Use it only when the exact Inca Trail, Salkantay or sanctuary segment has a current listing and the downloaded view remains available in airplane mode. Verify the route’s coverage, date and endpoint; a similarly named day hike is not evidence that your whole trek is represented. Subscription requirements and app behavior can change, so confirm them in the app before departure.

How to prepare an offline route, step by step

1. Confirm the itinerary and current access

Write down the route name, trailhead, camps, highest pass, planned exit and every transfer. Save SERNANP’s tourist map and read the latest government notice. A 2025 SERNANP reopening notice recorded temporary diversions near Wayllabamba and Phuyupatamarka and warned that movement could depend on weather and terrain. This illustrates why an old GPX track cannot guarantee that each segment is open.

2. Download the broad logistics area

Use Google Maps Offline for Cusco, the trailhead road, rail or bus connections, Aguas Calientes and sanctuary approaches. Make the custom rectangle larger than the obvious route so a pickup point, hotel change or detour does not fall outside it. Open the area once before leaving service and confirm that the map is stored locally.

  • Effortless Setup: Simply place the holder on your dashboard and adjust the glass board to your preferred viewing angle (45° recommended). It works seamlessly with any HUD-based app or GPS navigation software available on your mobile device.
  • Crystal Clear Reflection: For maximum visibility, ensure the protective films are removed from the glass. Note: When using with a smartphone, enable 'HUD' or 'Mirror' mode in your navigation app to ensure the reflected image is oriented correctly.

3. Download topographic trail layers

In your hiking app, select a topographic source, draw a corridor around the entire trek and save overlapping sections where necessary. Include switchbacks, camps, high passes, alternate approaches and the final walk into Machu Picchu Pueblo. Downloading only the citadel gives no context for a missed junction several hours earlier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Add and inspect the GPX track

Obtain the track from your guide or operator and inspect its start, finish, direction and waypoints while online. Compare it with the official map and itinerary. Look for accidental straight lines, an endpoint at the wrong camp or a route that crosses a known closure. Save camps and water points as named waypoints so you can find them without online search.

5. Test with the network disabled

Outside, enable airplane mode while leaving Location/GPS enabled. Open the hiking app and wait for a position fix. Confirm all of the following:

  • The location marker moves as you walk a short distance.
  • The saved map remains detailed rather than becoming a blank grid.
  • The GPX line, contours, scale and waypoints are visible.
  • A saved waypoint can be opened without an online place search.
  • The phone can still display the route after the app is closed and reopened.

Online-only searches may fail in airplane mode; that is expected. Save names and coordinates in advance instead of depending on a live search.

6. Make the corridor generous

Download beyond the recorded line. Include likely switchbacks, alternate approaches, camps, road crossings, the route to the final gate, the walk or shuttle to Machu Picchu Pueblo and any transfer to rail or road. For the 60 km Salkantay standard route, a citadel-sized rectangle is plainly inadequate. Keep enough free storage for overlapping tiles and a second map source.

  • GAME CHANGING CAPABILITIES - Wireless, sleek and lightweight design makes for a seamless addition to your tackle box

7. Prepare a power and backup plan

Charge the phone and a power bank, carry the correct cable, and store a screenshot or PDF of the route. Keep the SERNANP tourist map or a guide-issued paper map accessible. Tell a trip partner your intended route and check-in plan. Offline mapping does not send an emergency message, provide a rescue service or replace a guide.

How to navigate safely on the trail

Use the track to confirm direction, not to override the trail

At a junction, stop in a safe place and compare the GPS position with signs, trail markers and your guide’s instructions. Follow the marked route and current closure notices even if an old track continues elsewhere. Do not cross a barrier or detour around a landslide simply because the blue line points that way.

Expect imperfect position fixes

Steep canyon walls, dense cloud, rock faces and vegetation can reduce accuracy or cause the dot to jump. A single reading is not proof that you are on the correct path. Look for agreement among the track, contour shape, terrain, signs and known waypoints. If the position becomes implausible, stop, wait in an open safe spot and take another fix.

Record only what helps

A breadcrumb recording can show whether you are following the intended corridor, and waypoints can mark a camp or water source. Continuous recording consumes more battery, so use it when it has a clear purpose. Lock the screen between checks and avoid walking while staring at the display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check conditions every day

Ask your guide or park staff about weather, landslides, river crossings and diversions before setting out. SERNANP’s 2025 reopening notice demonstrates that a route can reopen with temporary detours rather than returning to the line shown by an older download. Signs and instructions encountered on the ground take priority over cached data.

App choice: what to compare

Criterion Google Maps Offline Gaia GPS AllTrails
Best use Roads, towns, stations, hotels and transfer planning Topographic trail context, GPX tracks and offline GPS navigation Secondary trail reference when the exact route has a current listing
Offline directions Google states that transit, bicycling and walking directions are unavailable offline Saved map and track can be viewed with the device GPS offline Downloaded maps are available to Plus and Peak members, according to its help center
Terrain detail General map layer; not a substitute for a dedicated topographic trail map Topographic layers such as Gaia Topo, documented as having worldwide coverage Depends on the individual route listing and downloaded layer
Route confidence Useful for access roads and populated places Depends on the GPX source and how recently access was checked Verify exact route, endpoint and listing date before relying on it
Cost or plan requirement Offline-area feature availability and storage depend on the current app and account Plan limits and map availability can vary; confirm in the current app Plus or Peak membership is required for the documented offline-download feature
Closure updates Cached data is not a live closure bulletin Downloaded layers and tracks do not replace SERNANP notices User listings may not reflect a current diversion; verify independently

The safest combination is usually Google Maps Offline for logistics plus a hiking app for contours and the GPX track, with the official tourist map and local guidance as authority.

Battery, storage and phone settings

  • Before departure: update the operating system and mapping apps while online, then download maps after the update so files are not invalidated.
  • Storage: check the app’s download size and leave room for overlapping tiles, screenshots and emergency documents.
  • Screen use: lower brightness, use a short screen timeout and lock the phone between checks.
  • Connectivity: use airplane mode when you do not need a signal search, but keep Location/GPS enabled for positioning.
  • Weather protection: keep the phone and power bank in waterproof protection while retaining quick access for a safe map check.
  • Power bank: start each day with both devices charged and carry a cable that fits your phone; do not assume a mountain camp has dependable charging.

Troubleshooting offline navigation

The map is blank but the GPS dot appears

The position chip is working, but map tiles were not saved for that location or zoom level. Return to connectivity, expand the download corridor and save the missing zoom levels. If you cannot reconnect, use the screenshot, official map, signs and guide rather than wandering off-route.

The app says the route is unavailable offline

Check that the download completed, the correct account is signed in and the route was saved locally rather than merely bookmarked online. Test again in airplane mode before leaving town. For AllTrails, confirm that your plan includes offline maps and that the exact listing—not a similarly named route—was downloaded.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The blue dot jumps or points away from the trail

Move to an open safe location, wait for another fix and compare the reading with terrain and signs. Do not follow a single implausible point across a closure or steep slope. Battery-saving settings can limit location updates; adjust them only when you can do so safely and with enough power remaining.

The GPX line conflicts with signs or a guide

Stop and treat the conflict as an access problem, not a challenge to solve by force. Ask the guide or park staff, check the day’s notice and follow the marked diversion. Preserve the file for later review instead of editing it on the trail in a way that could hide the original route.

The phone battery is running low

Stop continuous recording, reduce brightness, lock the screen and switch to the saved reference map. Use the power bank before the phone reaches a critical level. Tell your partner and guide that you are conserving power; a dead phone removes both the GPS display and your stored emergency information.

A practical pre-departure checklist

  • Route identified as Classic Inca Trail, Short Inca Trail, Salkantay or a sanctuary day route.
  • SERNANP tourist map saved, with the latest access notice checked.
  • Google Maps Offline area includes Cusco, trailhead, transfers, Aguas Calientes and sanctuary approaches.
  • Topographic map tiles cover the entire trail corridor, including detours and alternate approaches.
  • Current GPX track imported, inspected and compared with the itinerary.
  • Airplane-mode test completed outdoors with Location/GPS left on.
  • Waypoints saved for camps, passes, water, stations, meeting points and the final exit.
  • Screenshot, PDF or paper backup packed.
  • Phone, power bank and cables charged and protected from rain.
  • Guide or trip partner knows the planned route and check-in arrangement.

The essential operating rule

Download broadly, test completely, and navigate conservatively. Satellite positioning can work where there is no signal, but only cached maps and a route line show you the surrounding trail. Google Maps handles access logistics; a topographic hiking app supplies trail context; SERNANP, guides and on-site signs determine what is open today. When those sources disagree, stop and obtain local guidance rather than treating an offline line as permission to continue.
