Low Data Mode is an iPhone setting that reduces background network activity on the specific cellular line or Wi‑Fi network where you enable it. It can pause automatic downloads, updates, backups and photo syncing, and some apps lower streaming quality or refresh less often. It does not change your carrier plan, create a hard data cap or guarantee a particular percentage of savings.
Choose the connection you want to limit: LTE/4G cellular uses the cellular data options, 5G uses Data Mode, and Wi‑Fi has a separate switch for each connected network.

What Low Data Mode does
Apple introduced Low Data Mode in iOS 13 and later for people whose cellular or internet plans limit usage or who are dealing with slow data speeds. Apple describes it as a way to “restrict background network use and save network usage.” The setting primarily changes what happens automatically when you are not actively using an app.
- Apps can stop network activity while they are in the background.
- Background App Refresh is turned off.
- Streaming quality may be reduced to use less bandwidth.
- Automatic downloads, updates and backups can pause.
- Cloud services can defer synchronization until the mode is no longer active or a less restricted connection is available.
Low Data Mode is applied per connection, not as one universal iPhone switch. Cellular and Wi‑Fi controls are independent, and each Wi‑Fi network stores its own preference. Enabling it for a home network does not automatically enable it for a café network or your cellular line.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
There is no Apple-published typical savings percentage for the feature. Actual usage depends on the apps you run, the amount of media they transfer, whether you use them in the foreground and how each app responds to the setting.
Turn on Low Data Mode for cellular data
Use the path that matches the radio technology and the wording shown by your iPhone. Apple notes that cellular menus vary by carrier, iPhone model and region; you may see Cellular or Mobile Data, and Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options.
LTE or 4G
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- Tap Cellular Data Options (or Mobile Data Options).
- Turn on Low Data Mode.
This is the direct switch for a line using LTE/4G. If you use more than one line, make sure you are in the settings for the line whose allowance you want to protect.
5G
- Open Settings and tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
- Open Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options.
- Tap Data Mode.
- Select Low Data Mode.
On 5G, Low Data Mode is one of three Data Mode choices. The other two are Standard and Allow More Data on 5G; the differences are detailed below.
Dual SIM or multiple cellular lines
- In Settings, open Cellular or Mobile Data.
- Tap the phone number or line you want to manage.
- Turn on Low Data Mode for that line.
Repeat these steps for another line if both plans need the restriction. Selecting it for one number does not apply it to the other.

Turn on Low Data Mode for Wi‑Fi
- Open Settings and tap Wi‑Fi.
- Find the network you are currently connected to.
- Tap the information button beside that network.
- Turn on Low Data Mode.
The setting belongs to that Wi‑Fi network. If you connect to a different network, open that network’s information page and choose its setting separately. Apple says iCloud keeps Wi‑Fi Low Data Mode preferences current across the user’s devices, so the preference can follow your Apple devices through iCloud.
Wi‑Fi Low Data Mode is useful for a metered home broadband connection, a phone hotspot or a hotel network with a usage limit. It is not necessary on every Wi‑Fi network simply because cellular Low Data Mode is enabled; the two controls remain separate.

Low Data Mode does not prevent you from opening an app, browsing, sending messages or streaming manually. Its strongest effect is on work that would otherwise happen automatically in the background. Apps are allowed to adapt differently, so the following behaviors are expected examples rather than a promise that every third-party app will act identically.
System-wide behavior
- Background activity: Apps can stop network requests when they are not actively being used, and Background App Refresh is disabled.
- Media quality: Streaming services may select a lower-quality stream to reduce bandwidth.
- Automatic transfers: Automatic downloads, software updates and backups can be suspended.
- Cloud synchronization: Services such as iCloud can defer updates while the restricted connection is in use.
Built-in Apple app examples
| App or service | Behavior with Low Data Mode | What you may notice |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | Video autoplay, automatic app updates and automatic downloads are turned off. | Apps and media do not update or download on their own over the restricted connection. |
| Music | Automatic downloads and high-quality streaming are turned off. | New music is not fetched automatically, and playback can use a lower-quality stream. |
| Podcasts | Feeds update less often; episode downloads occur only when connected to Wi‑Fi. | A newly released episode may not appear immediately, and automatic cellular downloads do not occur. |
| News | Article prefetching is turned off. | Stories may load when you open them instead of being prepared in advance. |
| iCloud | Updates and automatic backups pause; iCloud Photos updates turn off while the mode applies. | Photos or backups can remain pending until the connection is no longer restricted. |
| FaceTime | Video bitrate is optimized for lower bandwidth. | Video quality can be reduced to keep a call usable with less data. |
These changes are connection-specific. For example, a photo update paused on a cellular line can resume when the iPhone later uses an unrestricted Wi‑Fi network, while a Wi‑Fi network that also has Low Data Mode enabled can continue to defer it.
Compare the three 5G Data Mode choices
When your iPhone and plan expose 5G Data Mode, the choice controls how aggressively the phone limits automatic activity and whether Apple’s higher-data features remain available.

| Setting | Background and automatic activity | Media and calling quality | Higher-data features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Allows automatic updates and background tasks over cellular. | Uses standard video and FaceTime quality. | Does not deliberately enable the additional high-data features listed for Allow More Data on 5G. |
| Low Data Mode | Pauses automatic updates and background tasks to reduce usage. | Apps can reduce streaming quality; FaceTime can use a lower bitrate. | Prioritizes limiting transfers rather than enabling high-data experiences. |
| Allow More Data on 5G | Permits more cellular activity than Low Data Mode. | Can provide higher-quality FaceTime and HD Apple TV content. | Apple lists higher-quality Apple Music media, iOS updates over cellular and automatic iCloud backups among the enabled possibilities. |
The exact choices and their defaults depend on your carrier and plan. If a choice is missing or the wording differs, that is not necessarily an iPhone fault; cellular settings are supplied according to network, model and regional configuration.

Which connection and setting should you use?
You have a limited cellular allowance
Enable Low Data Mode on the affected cellular line. On LTE/4G it is in the cellular data options; on 5G it is under Data Mode. If you have Dual SIM, apply it to the line with the limited allowance rather than assuming the phone will protect every line.
Your 5G plan is generous but you want normal behavior
Use Standard. It allows routine background work and automatic updates while retaining standard video and FaceTime quality. Choose Allow More Data on 5G only when your plan and coverage make the additional transfers worthwhile.
Your 5G allowance is tight or you are roaming under a strict cap
Choose Low Data Mode. Expect less background activity and possible reductions in streaming and FaceTime quality. You can still use an app in the foreground when you need it; the setting is designed to reduce automatic work, not to make the phone unusable.
Your broadband or hotspot connection is metered
Enable Low Data Mode on that specific Wi‑Fi network. Because Wi‑Fi preferences are stored per network, repeat the setup for each metered network you use.

You are on a slow connection rather than a limited plan
Low Data Mode can make the phone less aggressive about background transfers and can lower media bitrate, which may improve responsiveness. It will not increase the underlying speed of the connection, and some apps may still transfer data when you actively use them.
What Low Data Mode does not guarantee
- It is not a data firewall. Foreground activity still uses data, and an app can implement its own behavior. The setting does not promise zero cellular or Wi‑Fi traffic.
- It has no fixed savings rate. Apple does not publish a typical percentage of data saved, so a precise estimate would be unsupported.
- It does not change your plan. Your allowance, billing, roaming terms and carrier limits remain the same. Apple directs users to their provider for plan-specific details.
- It does not force every app to pause in exactly the same way. Apple’s built-in apps have documented adaptations, while third-party apps can choose different reductions.
- It does not make every video or call low quality. Quality can be reduced as an adaptation, but the exact result depends on the app, network and activity.
Connectivity Assist and Low Data Mode
Apple’s Connectivity Assist feature can add cellular data when a Wi‑Fi connection is weak. Apple says Connectivity Assist is not used when cellular Low Data Mode is active. That prevents this particular fallback from adding cellular traffic while the cellular restriction is on.
This interaction still does not mean that Low Data Mode blocks every possible transfer or guarantees a specific amount of savings. The setting controls Apple’s documented background and quality adaptations; individual apps and active use remain separate factors.

The Low Data Mode switch is missing
- Check both labels: your phone may use Cellular instead of Mobile Data, or the reverse.
- On 5G, look for Data Mode inside the cellular data options rather than expecting a separate top-level switch.
- Cellular choices vary by provider, iPhone model and region. Contact the carrier if the documented path does not match your plan.
Photos, backups or updates are not moving
Pause behavior is expected for iCloud updates, automatic backups and iCloud Photos while Low Data Mode applies. Turn off Low Data Mode on the connection you are using, or connect through a network without the restriction, when you need those transfers to proceed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn app still used data
Low Data Mode limits background use; it does not stop a transfer you initiate by opening an app, playing media or making a call. Apps also adapt differently. Check whether the activity occurred in the foreground and whether the app has its own download or streaming controls.

The phone still uses cellular data on weak Wi‑Fi
Confirm that cellular Low Data Mode is enabled for the active line. Connectivity Assist is not used while cellular Low Data Mode is active, but other foreground activity can still use cellular data if you allow it.
You enabled the wrong Dual SIM line
Return to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data), tap the relevant number and check that Low Data Mode is enabled on that line. Each line has its own setting.
Turn Low Data Mode off
Use the same path used to enable it and switch the setting off:
- LTE/4G: Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options > turn off Low Data Mode.
- 5G: Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options > Data Mode > choose Standard or another available mode.
- Dual SIM: Open the specific number or line first, then change its setting.
- Wi‑Fi: Settings > Wi‑Fi > tap the information button beside the connected network > turn off Low Data Mode.
Turning it off for cellular does not turn it off for a Wi‑Fi network, and turning it off for one Wi‑Fi network does not alter another network’s preference.
Plan and travel considerations
Low Data Mode changes how the iPhone uses a connection; it cannot increase an allowance, alter roaming rules or replace a plan with more data. If your underlying problem is an insufficient allowance, compare mobile data plans or travel eSIM data plans separately, then use Low Data Mode as a device-side way to reduce automatic consumption. Apple recommends contacting the provider for the details of a particular cellular plan.
Version and availability notes
Low Data Mode is documented for iOS 13 and later. Apple’s “Use Low Data Mode on your iPhone and iPad” support article was dated October 15, 2025. Apple’s iPhone User Guide page for iOS 27, accessed October 13, 2026, reiterates that cellular settings can differ by provider, model and region. Apple’s 5G guidance documents the Standard, Low Data Mode and Allow More Data on 5G choices, while its Connectivity Assist guidance explains the weak-Wi‑Fi interaction.
